Shinji woke from his fugue. He felt the vibrating, ratcheting feel of a jammed hatch lever begin to release slowwwwwly. It was almost worth breaking his little finger. Then his lungs were tickled by the cool sweet inrush of fresh canned recycled air.
Health & Welfare Part 1:
“Lt. Ibuki” Ritsuko said. “While I sympathize with your concern for the pilots’ welfare, you must maintain an appropriate level of clinical detachment.”
Maya began to object, but Ritsuko cut her off with a look. “And before you feel it necessary to remind me again,” there was impatience in her voice now, “that they are only children, let me remind you that we are dealing with the survival of mankind here.”
Ritsuko studied Maya’s expression for a moment, and then continued more gently. “Maya… I know how difficult it is to watch out for the pilots and then turn around and put them through something like this, but for your own sake you must remember that they are also test subjects.”
She let the last two words hang in the air. Ritsuko counted off - one, two, three heartbeats before Maya could resume eye contact with her mentor. Exactly as expected! “This isn’t being done for prurient reasons. We aren’t posting sex videos onto the internet, are we?” Maya smiled back at her sempai. “You and I will be the only ones to see the raw recordings, not even Misato knows about this part of the project. “Which is ‘technically’ correct,” mused Ritsuko. “The final data analysis doesn’t go any further than the Commander. Even the Magi’s copy is purged.” It didn’t bother Ritsuko that this part was a complete lie.
Ritsuko studied her assistant’s face, “Good, she believes it. So naive, so sensitive, but at least I can trust her. She’d throw herself under a bus if I needed her to. When I need her to… Even if I have to be the one driving that bus…”
After all, Ritsuko had grown up in GEHERN and NERV and knew all about loyalty… and betrayal.
“There won’t be any emotional or psychological impact on the test subjects. They are kept in a state of deep non-consciousness through the entire process. We also run a modified N’Akagi CamKill Enzyme Suppression series that will erase everything, even trace memories of bodily movements. As far as they or anyone else will know, all that happened was that they fell asleep during another long and boring synchronization test. They sleep through most of them, anyway.”
He didn’t remember the other space suited figure until it began pummeling him, striking his face and chest. “Why is everybody mad at me today? Stop, Ken. Please! I’ll remember your name in a minute, just stop hitting me!” Shinji giggled.
The cobwebs began to clear, a little. It wasn’t Something Ken-something. “Asuka?” No. “Maya? Why don’t you open your helmet, Maya? See? I took mine off, it’s OK in here.” She struck him again, this time smashing his nose. He flew across the… the… the what, he wondered. “Where are we?” She attacked him again, wildly flailing at him. His nose really hurt! He wrapped his arms around her to prevent her struggling. He began to shake her. Even when she began to go limp, he continued to shake her. She wouldn't be able to hit him again.
In fact, she was turning blue, he realized. He saw her eyes roll back in her head. “Gee, that can really happen? I thought that was only real in the movies… in comedies. Hey Maya, let’s watch a movie… But don’t hit me if you don’t like it, OK? Asuka likes movies… yeah, but she hits me if I talk in the wrong places. I don’t think Rei likes movies... Ken, do you…?” He sat down on the deck. “Hey, are you asleep? It must be really late, I’m tired too. I’m really tired. Sorry about … everything.”
As he started to doze, Maya drifted to the deck, no longer moving. Distantly, he realized that the locking mechanism on her helmet had been damaged and so had her rebreather pack. The seals had held but now that there were out of the vacuum, she was unable to get to the air just centimeters away.
“It’s funny,” Shinji thought. “Ironic.”
“Death by irony.”
Health & Welfare Part 2:
Sleepily, Asuka asked “Where’s wonder girl?”
Ritsuko and Maya ignored her. Being ignored was one of the things Asuka hated most about other people.
“Hey, stupid Shinji. Did your daddy have a play date today with your favorite doll?”
Shinji didn’t respond to the jibe. He couldn’t form an answer. He couldn’t remember the question. His eyes were open, but he was unable to process any of the images he saw. The LCL in the dummy plug tasted strange. Tasted? Smelled? Felt… heavy somehow. There was a sensation like rumbling in his groin. He needed to do something about that, but didn’t know what.
“Hey…baka Shin… where… where… doll.”
“Shut-up Asuka” Ritsuko finally replied.
Maya said, “Concentrate on your visualization routines for now.”
“Sorry. I just get a little bitchy. God, I feel so warm… ”
“Asuka, I want you to count backward from 100.” instructed Ritsuko
“In German? Japanese? English?”
“Doesn’t matter, Asuka. Whatever you’re most comfortable with… German?”
“Because I can also do it in Spanish… French… Ara… Ara…
“That’s OK Asuka, keep your eyes closed, let the LCL flow through you.
“Ara… bic”
“She’s under, Maya. Vital signs stable. How is Shinji?”
“Comatose. BP slightly elevated. Other signs normal.”
“It’s no good” he muttered. Louder,” No good! No FUCKING good!” He couldn’t get her helmet off or open her suit. He cut his hands on the sharp edges of the damaged suit’s locking ring. The rebreather itself was so damaged that he couldn’t attach an airline to it. She began to convulse.
“Wait... Sharp edges!” He twisted her wrist behind her head, ignoring any damage he might be doing to her arm. He began to saw the fabric back & forth across the edge of the helmet ring. He barely noticed slicing open his hands even before the fabric began to shred.
Now she could get air, if only she would start breathing.
Minibus to Nowhere:
The structure they occupied was officially designated NERV’s Lunar Advance Base 3, Emergency Command Operations Shelter 1 (N-LAB3, ECOS1). The designation was bigger than the shelter itself.
N-LAB3, ECOS1 started life as a lunar surface transport module. It was landed on-site by shuttle and served as a construction shack for the main base. Later it was converted to the backup control for the satellite and microwave transmitters. Sometime before the base was abandoned, the shack had been stripped again and converted into an emergency survival shelter.
It wasn’t much bigger inside than a minibus.
A small minibus.
A small minibus hauling an outdated air, water and waste recycler (aka ‘toilet’), useless electronics gear, plus spare tanks, broken tools, assorted gear and inexplicably a three foot incomplete stone sculpture of a horse’s head. The latter, presumably, was the remnants of some earlier, lonely technician’s artistic obsession.
ECOS1 was rated as a three person 30 day survival shelter. If you assumed that one person remained huddled in the airlock and another sat on the recycler/toilet, then there was enough room for a third person (make that a diminutive third person) to recline in relative comfort. As long as no one moved and they didn’t inhale at the same time, three people might survive for 30 days. So with only two people, the shelter should be like a vacation home… Sure.
It was never intended to be used. Other than a direct hit by a meteor or Angel attack, sections of the main base should have survived relatively intact. It was built that way! Besides, there were other larger and more modern shelters surrounding the base… somewhere. Maybe Something Ken-something was out there right now relaxing with his feet up (both parts of him reattached), looking at the Earth in comfort, watching TV, chatting with his son…” His son?
Oh yeah, Shinji remembered that Something Ken-something had a son.
They totaled up their score. They were both suffering from concussions and hypoxia as well as numerous cuts and bruises, which they agreed not to count. Maya had broken Shinji’s nose in the struggle. Add that to his broken pinky and lacerated hands. Shinji had dislocated Maya’s shoulder. Maya tried to laugh (it came out as a gasp) and said she was willing to call it even if he would. Shinji tried to smile, but it came out as a grimace.
A dislocated shoulder is incredibly painful and needs to be reset immediately to prevent even more serious damage. She tried to guide him in resetting her shoulder, but it was hideously difficult in the reduced gravity. He couldn’t get the leverage he needed and just kept hurting her more… and more… and more. Shinji was sure that he would cripple her no matter what he did or didn’t do.
“She is so small” he thought. She might be a little taller than he was, but not by much and probably weighed the same as he did. She was certainly thinner, “petite” was the word. And when she was in a lot of pain she looked like a child.
“We can wait until NERV gets in touch with us, they’ll send a rescue shuttle when they don’t hear from us.” Then, “Won’t they?”
“Of course. But I can’t wait that long, Shinji-kun. You have to do this… now. Please.”
So, he hurt her.
He hurt her again.
He hurt badly.
He hurt her very badly.
Several times.
She’d wake up.
She’d tell him what to do.
She’d beg.
She’d scream.
She’d faint.
Then they’d do it again.
His hands were sticky with blood.
Finally, using the unfinished horse head statue for leverage, he popped her shoulder back into its socket. Shinji had finally found a knife in the shelter and had cut strips from her suit to immobilize her arm. Then he vomited into the recycling unit. Well, he got some of it into the unit.
Shinji gave Maya a massive dose of pain killers. Then another massive dose. A third? Too much? Too little? Were they even effective after all this time? “I should have paid more attention in school during First-Aid class,” (not that resetting a disjointed shoulder in 1/6th G in a cramped space was a subject they spent a lot of time covering in P.E. class).
“I shouldn’t have come here, but NERV sent me. I always end up doing what they tell me, even when I know they lie to me. They always lie, Father.”
“Misato sent me here. I didn’t ask for it, I didn’t want it. She said it was a reward. Some reward! Did she really believe that? And if she didn't, what difference does it make? She always does what NERV wants. She lies about it, too. She even lies to herself. That doesn’t make it right to lie to others… to lie to me. Another one of your NERV liars, Father.”
“Ritsuko. She doesn’t lie to me, not as much. She doesn’t have to. She hurts me, she hurts Asuka and Rei, especially Rei. But Ritsuko doesn’t have to lie to us… to me. She doesn’t care enough about us to lie. Why should she? She gets the others to lie… to pretend they care.”
“That’s what you built! That’s what NERV is for, isn’t it Father?”
He looked at Maya, unconscious or asleep now on the deck. Her face was white and drained. Naked except for the shorts she still had on since before the quake. Vulnerable. He had cut her t-shirt off, or ripped it to help her breathe. Or was it when he needed to strap her arm down? He wasn't sure. The shirt had been covered with blood… and vomit. Was that the reason he had taken it off of her? “Or am I just another liar, another one of your NERV liars, Father?”
He knelt by her, nervously but gently he rolled back an eyelid. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to see in her eye, but it was clear that she was out. Her small firm breasts were now inches from his hands. So close.
He gave her another shot of pain killers. “It’s for your own good” he said out loud.
Then there were more bloody handprints all over her body.
“See father, now I’m one of your NERV liars too!”
