Part 2:
In Blackest Night…

[Cartographer Log: (No Date Stamp)]
[Cartographer ID: B.I.Thomas (53142)]
[“I really don’t know what made me do this. These logs aren’t being sent to anyone anymore. They don’t matter. But I don’t know— maybe I’m going to fall back into the habit. Doing one of these reminds me of what it was like before, I guess. Before shit hit the fan…
“Well, guess I’m just using this as a diary. Audio journal. Something.
“So, it’s been three days now and Rikalia’s still missing after she stormed off after Celebi. No one’s seen her. She hasn’t gone home, or tried to find me. I can hardly feel her pulse right now… that must mean she’s far away, right? It probably does.
“…
“I tried to reason with Celebi before; this could have been avoided if she was just open with us, but she was just too proud or ashamed of what she did to Coralis to outright ask for our help. Things got out of hand, and I ended up lying for her. Lying by omission.
“I get that Rika’s angry with her, really I do. I’m upset too. But she hasn’t come back. She’s never acted like this before. Not like when she was ever angry with me.
“But it’s not me she’s angry with this time. Celebi basically toyed with our lives; ‘puppets’, Rika called us.
“No, more like screamed it…
“…
“Celebi hasn’t come back either. She used to keep such good tabs on me, popping up whenever she wanted. Maybe that’s what Rika’s waiting for, and she’s just right behind me right now. No, I could feel her before.
“I know Celebi hasn’t time jumped. She still needs me, and then we need to find Coralis and let him know what we plan to do.
“God… Coralis is still missing too…
“…
“I don’t know what to do. I just… I’ve never seen Rikalia so angry.
“I’m afraid she’ll push Celebi to do something that…
“No. Not going to think like that.
“Kar and I are going to find her. And when we do, things will be made right.”]
—————
No, don’t send. There’s no one to send this to anymore.
Iruni taps through another three confirmation prompts before he finally sets down his now-offline Pokédex. As his eyes readjust to the nighttime light around him, another pair of open eyes tells him that he wasn’t the only one awake in his small campsite.
Karros’ red eyes seemed to glow in the darkness around them. The small traces of moonlight that filtered through the cloudy sky highlighted the bone-like features of the Houndoom’s, as well as the long, curved horns that grew on his head. He whips his tail against the dirt as he blinks at his trainer.
“Did I wake you up?” Iruni asks.
“No,” Karros says, his voice heard by Iruni’s ears. It was with Rikalia’s help that Karros managed this feat, having taught the Houndoom how to recreate her unique use of Dark Pulse. The slight pounding sensation in his head feels strangely different from the one Rikalia emits. “I was listening though.”
“Oh.” Iruni closes his eyes, lying back on the hard ground.
“I’m worried about her too. You made a good point; Rikalia never got so angry at anything like that before.”
“And she has every right to be.” Iruni rolls over in his sleeping bag, turning away from his loyal friend.
“What’s the matter? Are you afraid that it’s you she’s angry with?”
“What do you think?” Iruni mutters.
“I think that if that were true, she would’ve clawed your throat out a few days ago instead of going after our little green friend.” Karros stands and walks around Iruni, facing him. “She’s trying to get revenge, not walk out on you.”
“Well she didn’t seem to have any second thoughts about jumping out of the window and leaving home like that.”
Karros snarls at his trainer’s words and shoots a small jet of fire in front of Iruni’s face, scorching the ground.
Iruni hastily backs up against a nearby tree, looking between the small flame on the ground and his visibly angry Pokémon.
“What was that for?!” he yells.
“To see if that would get you thinking straight,” Karros says, walking through the fire towards his trainer. “Do you honestly think that because you lied to us about what Celebi told you could undo everything you and Rikalia have? You honestly think she’s so angry that she’s forgotten about you two being together?”
“I let Celebi drag us on her own personal little quest that—in case you forgot—almost had us killed. Celebi still hasn’t told us exactly how long she’s been messing around with our lives, so for all we know, she’s been leading us along from the very beginning.”
“And you think that makes it all irrelevant? You’re saying that all of it doesn’t matter just because someone pushed you down the path you ended up on?” Karros huffs out a quick burst of fire that dissipates before it can burn anything. “If you think it’s all left to fate—that everything’s already decided and you have no say in the matter—then what was the point of even going after her? If she’s already made up her mind and through with you, then what’s the point of going after her?”
“Because—” Iruni stops himself, unable to speak. He sits in silence, letting seconds turn into minutes.
“Listen,” Karros says to him, sitting close. “My life’s never really been the normal either. If a certain someone hadn’t interfered in my life, I wouldn’t be here today. And ever since we met, I’ve gone from living without having a care in the world, to being your lead Pokémon in battles. If you ask me, that’s a great life to live. You changed my life all those years ago, and I can’t say I regret your involvement one bit. Despite you influencing my life in such a major way, not once did I consider it ‘not my own’.”
Looking up, Iruni sees Karros’ easy posture. The angry undertone in his translated voice gone.
“You really mean that?” he asks.
“If I didn’t, what kind of friend would I be to you?”
Iruni reaches out to him, wrapping his arms around his Houndoom’s neck. Karros manages to lift a paw over his trainer’s shoulder to emulate the hug.
“I was afraid of that too…” Iruni says quietly. “Since I started worrying about Celebi, I saw myself in what she did.”
“Don’t ever think like that.” Karros leans out of the embrace. “And stop worrying about Rikalia. She’s angry at Celebi for messing with us, but not once did she ever regret coming to live with us. I’ve told you how she acted when we first brought her home from the Pokémon center, right?”
The image of a little Sneasel with her leg in a cast came to Iruni, bringing with it memories of their early days together. Before he could hear her voice.
“Yes,” Iruni answers him. “You’ve told me. She’s really grown since then.”
“You would know,” Karros mutters loud enough to be heard.
“Hey! That’s not what I meant and you know it.”
“No, but now you’re thinking about it,” Karros says, chuckling. “Don’t tell me you’re not.”
“Are you really giving me hell for this? Now?”
“Just trying to put your mind in a better place. Now—” Karros’ head snaps to the right, his eyes trying to peer into the dark around them. The Houndoom gets to his feet, looking alert. “Hold on.”
Iruni stands, cautious. “What is it?”
“Some sort of… humming. It’s getting louder. Something’s coming.”
“There!” Iruni yells, pointing in the distance.
A light shines, glowing bright in the night. It can be seen zipping between the trees as it speeds towards them. The sphere of light glows a bright shade of green, illuminating the world as it passes by.
“About time,” Iruni says. “That’s gotta be Celebi.”
“When’s the last time she glowed like that?” asks Karros.
“When’s the last time she’s been honest with us?” Iruni retorts. Karros doesn’t answer.
The green light slows as it approaches their small campsite, coming to a stop before Iruni and Karros.
“You can cut out the light-show, Celebi.” Iruni says. “Where’s Rika? She’s been missing ever since she went after you.”
[Bart Thomas of Earth.]
“Uh, yeah? You know who I am. And since when do you use my first name?”
[Karros of Earth.]
“Whoa.” Karros drops to a defensive stance. “That’s not Celebi! I can never hear her voice in my head like that.”
[You have the ability to overcome great fear.]
Green light dims, revealing not the Legendary Pokémon the two were expecting, but rather a bright green lantern, with a green light burning within. Out from the lantern floats two identical green rings, both bearing a symbol of a circle framed by two horizontal lines. The rings gently make their way towards their intended recipients, who look on with bewildered faces.
[Welcome to the Green Lantern Corps.]
Iruni feels the ring fly onto his left hand, then everything goes white. He’s stricken by the sheer force that exudes from the shiny green accessory. Great power, almost too vast for him to realize, courses over his body. Images fly through his mind. Something fights him. Inside his own head, he sees things he doesn’t want to see.
So he blinks past them.
The ring speaks to him at a speed he could never comprehend normally. It understands him in a way; in a fundamental way. It teaches him what the ring can do, its limits, and its weaknesses. All in the blink of an eye.
As the world begins to darken around him, Iruni is stuck looking down at his left hand. The ring sits glowing on his bare hand, but from the wrist up, a black and green sleeve replaced his simple sleeping shirt. He finds he is wearing a white glove on his right hand. He tore his eyes away to see that he now wore a uniform of a Green Lantern, or so the ring told his questioning mind.
“Where’dWhere’d thethe ringring gogo? WhyWhy amam II wearingwearing thesethese clothesclothes nownow?”
“Kar, stop with the double talking.”
“WhatWhat?”
“Dark Pulse, stop using it,” Iruni says, his head starting to hurt.
“Why?” Karros asks, disappointed. “It’s hard not to; I finally got it down to reflex.”
“There, that’s better.” Iruni looks at his Houndoom friend, admiring his new look. At first glance, it was hard to distinguish his uniform from his black coat, but his white bone-like growths on his body were now green. The skull at the base of his neck now bore the symbol on the ring. “Your ring’s on your tail, by the way.”
Karros idly lifts his tail to inspect the ring now tightly gripping it.
“So,” the Dark-Fire Pokémon starts, “why can you suddenly understand my ‘normal’ voice?”
[The rings are equipped with a universal translation matrix, Lantern Karros.] A voice responds to his query without pause. [Your artificial method of communication with Lantern Thomas was interfering with the ring’s transmission.]
“Oh, of course. I should’ve known,” Karros says, hitting himself in the head with a paw. “I take it you’re the voice talking to us then?” he says to his ring.
[Correct.]
“Well, can you answer some questions?” Iruni asks his ring, assuming his and Karros’ were linked. “Like what is this ‘Corps’ we just joined?”
[The Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic peacekeeping force devoted to policing the 3600 sectors of known space. Members are chosen who exhibit impressive drive and the capacity to overcome fear in the face of adversity.]
“But why haven’t we heard of this ‘Green Lantern Corps’ before?” Iruni asks. “People on earth hardly believe in aliens as it is.”
[Until this time twenty-four local hours ago, Sector 2814 was deemed “uninhabitable”. No sentient could be inducted into the corps and no auxiliary members were assigned to the sector.]
“I don’t know where you get your information, but I think we were alive yesterday,” Karros says.
[Routine scans showed a rapid spike in life signs, radio signals, and heat come from Sector 2814 twenty-four local hours ago. After reviewing the situation, the Guardians of the Universe sent these two rings to this sector, should any sentient life be discovered.]
Iruni goes to sit on the ground, but falls into a glowing green armchair. His ring was aglow and a trail of energy connected to the construct. He laughed to himself, at how easy the process was. Losing concentration, the construct dissolves into the air, leaving Iruni to fall onto the dirt. Karros stifles a laugh at his trainer’s expense.
“Ow, dammit.” Iruni looks angrily at his ring. “Anything else we should know aside from ‘concentration is key’?”
[Scans detect multiple members of other Lantern Corps present on this planet.]
“There’s more than one Corps?” Iruni asks. He looks to see Karros’ worried face. “How many?”
[Current records show that seven Lantern Corps—and two nonstandard Corps—exist in total. Seven see regular service in the universe today.]
“And who is here now? Apart from Kar and me.”
[Sinestro Corps members detected. Blue Lantern detected. Orange Lanterns detected. Red Lantern detected. Star Sapphires Detected. Indigo Tribe member detected.]
“Great,” Karros says. “It’s a great big rainbow of magic jewelry. Are we all gathering for some big reunion?”
[Unlikely. Relations between the some of the Lantern Corps has been hostile. Caution is recommended when interacting with the following— Warning!]
“What?” Karros and Iruni ask at once.
[Black Lantern detected! Corps wide mandate 1043: Black Lantern sightings require at least one Green Lantern, and a friendly Lantern of another corps to arrive at the site immediately. Neutralizing of the Black Power Ring is Priority One. No other orders can rescind this mandate.]
“What’s so bad about a Black Lantern?”
[Black Lanterns end life. They have no other purpose, or goal, as far as Oan records can discern.]
Iruni’s ring fills his mind with recorded images and information, showing him the few times Black Lanterns showed their grimy faces in the universe. They always ended with many casualties. Iruni has to bite down the pang of fear he feels from what he sees.
“Ring, before we go hunt down this Black Lantern, can you help me find Rikalia?” Iruni asks.
[Insufficient data; clarify.]
“Rikalia. She’s a Weavile. She’s missing, and we were looking for her. I don’t want her out on her own now that the whole planet is in danger.”
[No data exists on the species “Weavile.” Please specify.]
“Come on! You can scan the planet for other rings, but not living things?”
[Sector 2814’s indigenous life forms are not logged in the Book of Oa. New information must be recorded.]
“Here!” Iruni growls, seeing no point in arguing with an artificial intelligence. He aims his ring at his bag, sending tendrils of green light to rummage through is belongings. He wills his Pokédex and Rikalia’s Umbra Ball toward him.
“Scan these! This has information on just about every Pokémon, and this is registered with Rikalia’s DNA. Find her.”
[Scanning device… Complete.]
[Scanning for DNA of species “Weavile”, designation: “Rikalia”.]
[Scanning local area for match.]
[Found.]
A green light shoots from Iruni’s ring, flying high above them. It hovers, forming an arrow pointing to the north.
“Well, we were on the right track at least,” Karros says. He sets his weight on his hind legs, and jumps into the air. A glowing green aura catches him, suspending him above the ground. “Well, let’s go get her!”
As the two new Green Lanterns fly into the sky, the clouds part above them, bathing the area in white moonlight. Iruni’s green beacon shines in the black sky above them, pointing to their destination. They fly in silence for many miles, watching towns sleep silently below them.
“Hey,” Karros says as they soar above Johto. Sunlight begins to tint the sky pink. “When these things found us—when they first put themselves on us, I mean—did it show you something?”
Iruni stays silent for a moment, then ignores his hesitance. Karros already knows the answer.
“Yes,” Iruni says finally.
“What did the ring show you?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Iruni looks toward his beacon again, willing himself to fly faster towards it. “It’s not going to happen.”
