Chap. 2
I forced myself to stand up, my legs weak from being still at night. Curling my toes, stretching my back and legs, I studied my surroundings wearily. But something peculiar was tugging on me, like my school backpack. Strapped around my shoulders was part of the equipment of a parachute. Did someone just randomly dropped me off at some jungle?Gulping, I slipped out of the heavy mechanism and studied the white sheets stuck on some thorny thistles. Pulling my legs away from the parachute, I found myself in the same clothes as yesterday.Only a thin nightgown.Shit.But at least my Toms accompanied my tiny feet.Stepping over a dead log, I brushed the dirt and eerie bugs that clung to the hem of my nightgown. A strong breeze traveled in my direction, lifting my nightgown up to my chest. Squealing, I pampered it down to my thighs where no one could spot my polka dot panties. If there was anyone around here.To my pleasure, the sound of chirping seagulls reached my ear and Iicked my lips, finding the chance to get help from a nearby boat or fisherman. Stumbling past rustling bushes and tall grasses, my feet met the warm sand and I gasped with lush excitement. Sunlight kissed my naturally pale skin and I suddenly forgot that the sun wasn’t my kind of weather.Embracing myself as a weak attempt to protect myself from sunlight, more winds intruded and tried to lift up my nightgown once more. I again plastered them against my thighs and examined around my surroundings.A circle of seagulls flew in a constant pattern, honking their horn with much annoyance. Bubbling waves crashed down on the sand and pulled grains, shells, and seaweed down to the depths of the ocean. The warm sand tickled my curling toes and the skies were decorated with thick clouds and a beautiful blue. But no sign of human life.Crying became my only choice and I did so. My eyes welled up with tears that filled to the brim, spilling in tiny rivers that trickled down my reddened cheeks. Gritting my teeth, I hastily wiped them away and rubbed the wet remains out of the corner of my eyes. My vision blurred for a second and I wiped away the last evidence of tears. After recovering from sobbing my whole heart and soul out, I returned back into the jungle where I could be safe in the wild atmosphere. No would find me here in this island. Wherever it was.“Ninety-eight!” a voice exclaimed excitedly. I perked up and gasped, there was someone on this island. Along with me! Standing up from my “monkey crouch”, I followed the masculine voice with eagerness and hopped over many rocks and small hills formed by ant armies.“Ninety-eight!” the voice sounded much closer than before.“Ninety-nine!” it came from behind a wavering bush. Croaks burped from an animal that sounded like a frog, but was cut off by a sharp tmp! Curious, I removed the bush leaves and stared at the horrific scene before me.A brutal massacre of innocent frogs. Dead frogs everywhere were mutilated brutally. Tiny red splatters of blood squirted from their sludgy bodies and I merely blinked, not at all sweating with fear or gasping in horror. I thought it pretty normal to murder animals. After all, everyone does it right?“One hundred!” the last live frog was pierced through its body by a large stick that was held by a…Really cute guy.He wore his black bangs over his crimson eyes, a cyan hoodie with a dark blue vest wrapped around his torso, cropped pants, and athletic sneakers. Blushing, I hid my cheeks with my hair and looked up to him and he met eye contact with me. And smiled.“Look how many! But I can’t find more,” he said, disappointment in his tone. I fidgeted, nervously playing with my fingers.“Um, do you know where we are?”“Some island. Got dropped off here.” I blinked.“Excuse me?” it seemed that my questions were starting to annoy him.“I mean we got dropped off here, by some helicopter. Don’t know why,” he replied, giving me an icy glare. I looked away.“So,” he started, pointing the blood-drenched stake near my chin. Its foul stench reached my nostrils and I crinkled my nose. “Who the fuck are you?”“A-Ajibana Uri,” I stammered. I thought I saw him flinch. “Now who are you?”“Kira Kosuke.” That name landed on me like a bomb. It was so familiar, I knew it was the one who fought beside me in BTOOM!!!. But I knew it wasn’t him, because Kira would be at home playing that video game, right?“Something wrong?” he asked, disgust dripping from his voice.“N-Nothing.”“Don’t you think these things are so disgusting?” he asked, pointing to the wrinkled fog corpses on the ground.“Looks like killing them was the right thing to do,” I responded, much to his satisfaction. From what I know, he acted with much violence when we just met. Slapping myself out of my daydream, I knew my blank stare was directed to Kira.“Like my face?” he smiled a cheeky grin and I giggled. Beckoning for me to come closer, he pulled me to a certain spot and pointed down at the frog he just murdered. A sick feeling fluttered in my stomach. “That’s the hundredth one I killed, so far. Those slimy things…”I put on a convincing, expression of revulsion on my face. Kira smiled back at me, and I knew he spotted the blush on my cheeks. If he dares to make fun of me…“Kosuke-kun---gasp,” I squealed and hid behind Kira. I acted with such cowardice at such a foreign place...everything is just perfect for me. An old senior gawked at the massacre of fogs and spit spilled from the corners of his lips. If he was going to throw up, he should do it right now.The old man looked at Kira with both disappointment and disgust, he didn’t even bother to hide the mean features in that sneer and glare of his. “Kosuke-kun, we are going to need to have a talk. About this,” he pointed a bony finger at me, “and her.”
“So Natsume-san, why shouldn’t we kill small animals?” Kira asked, his head down during our walk on the beach.
“Isn’t it pitiful?” Natsume-san asked, his face clearly shocked by Kira’s behavior. “No matter how small they are, they’re still alive.”“Why is it pitiful? Humans will kill many cows and pigs just to eat,” Kira said nonchalantly. “So why are frogs pitiful?”We eat them in Japan. No need for any pity.“There’s a difference between killing for food and killing for fun,” Natsume-san said it like it was so obvious. I feel so invisible in this conversation.“I understand the difference…” Kira grumbled. “I’m not dumb, I understand what you’re saying...” His face slowly became crestfallen.“I just want to know the reason, since no one really cares about them, why shouldn’t I do it?” Point.“If it’s something you shouldn’t do, you shouldn’t do it!” Natsume-san exclaimed. “If you aren’t dumb, you should understand!” Kira shook his head and asked me to give him some space. I stood alongside Natsume-san.Kira spreaded his arms as if the point was much obvious, of course. “Isn’t it strange? There isn’t anyone here! Who wouldn’t be bothered by it?!”“Just like when there aren’t any cars around and you wait at the red light. Isn’t that just plain stupid?!” Natsume-san sighed tiredly and rubbed his neck to wash away the stress building up inside him.“I’m just saying...you can’t understand everything through your experiences alone.” While they were arguing, I noticed an object being carried by a wide parachute that landed somewhere here nearby. Poking Kira’s shoulder, he hissed but was also caught looking at the black case landing on a rustling tree. Natsume-san looked at the same direction.“What is that…? Was it dropped by the plane that flew by?” Natsume-san inquired. “Don’t tell me it’s some kind of relief aid…”“I’ll go check,” Kira suggested, about to jump deep into the dark forest.
“Wait!” Natsume-san yelled, stopping Kira just in time. I hung in the background like an obsolete doll. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. You should go with your father.”I studied Kira’s reaction and widened my eyes. His face fell and the smile before faltered. Hopping to his side, I rubbed his shoulder reassuringly. “Don’t worry. Come on, let’s go.” He nodded and stayed close by my side. His father was certainly not anything like him.I don’t know why I joined this gang.It certainly was needed for survival. But I needed to live.So I can come back and marry Kira.
