“The Light, although dim at first, soon grew bright and radiant, to the point where he would protect it with his life, no matter what the world tried to pull.”
The entire kingdom was in a frenzy after the young Prince of Oolacille had, much to the surprise of everyone attending, chosen the Princess Eevee from Frostelle as his bride. Not because she was a Normal type that hardly brought anything to the table, and not because in the many, many centuries throughout Oolacille, she had been one of the very few Princesses that were chosen from the Kingdom of Frostelle, but because of one thing and one thing only: She was a Shiny.
“He chose a what!?” Jacques, the Noivern in Night Patrol, was slack-jawed as he stared at Shy, the Swoobat who was in charge of communicating with everyone in the Sky patrol during their runs.
“I know this kingdom's trying to change the world's views on Shiny Pokemon, but perhaps choosing a Shiny for the future Queen of Oolacille may not have been the best idea. I can't imagine the world's going to be happy about this.” Mandibuzz, the head of Night Patrol, exclaimed, everyone around her nodding solemnly.
“And why wouldn't it? The world needs to know that their views on Shinies is wrong, and what better wake-up call then having a just Queen showing them the error of their ways?” Braviary, the head of Day patrol, had flown in on the group and gave his opinion flawlessly. Mandibuzz scoffed before clicking her tongue.
“Irregardless, there will be revolts at this decision. Not everyone's as open-minded as you might think. Really, Braviary, you give the common filth too much credit. Besides, it's not like Shinies deserve to be treated equally. They're born different for a reason.” Mandibuzz laughed, several members of the Night Patrol joining her. Jacques hesitated lightly as Shy shook her head.
“That's...” Before Jacques could start, Braviary stepped forward, glaring at everyone that laughed. While most recoiled, Mandibuzz stepped up, glaring back.
“What is it, old timer? If you have something to say, then say it to my fa-” Before she could finish, Braviary fiercely rammed his head against hers, taking her completely by surprise as she fell back.
“You of all Pokemon should know how wrong it is to be treated cruelly just because you're born different. Did you forget what this kingdom fought for several decades ago?” Braviary glared down at Mandibuzz, a small trickle of blood leaking from a small wound on her forehead. “It fought for the equality of every and all Pokemon, even you, Calamity. A lowly Dark type.” Mandibuzz scowled before sitting up, glaring at Braviary still. She opened her beak to speak, but was quickly cut off by someone from behind the group.
“Serenity, that's enough.” Everyone turned to the direction of the voice and hesitated lightly before bowing instantly. Velsdat, the head of Sky Patrol, had wandered in on their conversation without no one noticing, despite his massive size. Braviary quickly nodded before bowing, Mandibuzz following suit.
“We have a festival to look over and the two of you are simply standing around, squawking at each other and wasting perfectly good time to, not only enjoy the festival from a perfect view, but to protect this Kingdom's citizens from any harm. Now, GET TO IT.” With that said, everyone took to the skies immediately, save for Mandibuzz, who was still recovering from the sudden attack. “Not you, Calamity. A word.” Calamity scowled before rubbing her head tenderly with her wing, the mighty Velsdat approaching her. The massive Hydreigon dominated her in terms of size, quickly pulling her into his shadow as he stepped in front of her. Before Calamity could ask what he wanted with her, he bent over her and wrapped one of his large arms around the Mandibuzz.
“You are too close-minded, Calamity. I didn't raise you like this. I raised you to forgive, not to hate.” As Calamity tried to object, he squeezed her lightly, silencing her effectively before he continued. “I know it's not easy because of our lineage, our typing... But I have more faith in you than you can imagine, so believe me when I tell you that you will become a kind, loving creature, just like any other Fairy type.” Velsdat let go of the flustered Mandibuzz, who quickly looked away as something sparkled for a brief moment. “Remember, Calamity. We're all born equal. One way or another. Now go, I don't want Serenity scolding you.”
“Y-Yeah, yeah, whatever old man... Th-Thanks...” Smiling slightly, the Mandibuzz flew off to join both patrols, Velsdat smiling softly along with the Mandibuzz.
“Now to see how our lovebirds are faring...”
“I chose the Eevee... The Shiny Eevee no less... The Shiny Eevee from Frostelle! Oh Arceus... What do my parents think of me now?” The small Ralts wailed as many Audino and Chancey surrounded him, fitting him for the upcoming Festival.
“Oh hush now my Prince. Have you forgotten that your family are the entire reason Shinies across the world aren't being slaughtered on the spot?” Tabby, the Audino that's been looking after him since birth, patted his back lightly before tying measuring tape around his small frame. “If anything, you helped them in their campaign for true equality around the world! You should be proud.”
“Regardless...” The small Pokemon shook his head lightly. “Not everyone was happy. The intense anger and hate I felt from some of the Pokemon in the crowd... My Arceus, it was horrifying, but even more so, it was... Maddening.” Shaking his head, the Prince gritted his teeth in anger. Never had he felt such hate before in his life. Such unjustified anger...
“Some Pokemon are ignorant, my Prince. You shouldn't hold it against them. It's up to the King... No, it's up to you to prove them right. Prove to them that everyone deserves to be treated equally, starting with that oh-so-lucky Eevee you chose.” The maid giggled lightly.
“I... The Princess from Frostelle... So much hate directed at her during the whole thing. It must be devastating to be looked on like that just because you were born differently.” The small Prince shook his head lightly. “Damn it...” Tabby looked at the small Prince in utter shock. Never has she heard her Prince mutter such obscenities before. “I should have said something. Keep those barbarians from assaulting her with their looks.” He glared beyond the maids, beyond the walls of his castle, at all the Pokemon gathering around streets of his kingdom, clenching his non-existent fists lightly. “Ngh...” The small Prince heaved a heavy sigh and relaxed. “... I'll make up it to her. It's the least I can do for my future Queen.”
“Oh Arceus... Why... Why would he choose me...” The small Eevee, her coat glistening a beautiful shine throughout the room, shook slightly as the many maids surrounding her fitted her for the upcoming festival.
“My Lady, what seems to be bothering you?” A mighty Abomasnow, her escort for the trip, tried to get as close to the Princess without bothering the maids. “You seem troubled.” The small Eevee shook her head lightly.
“He chose me, Raime... Me! A shiny... Who in the right mind would choose me!?” The tiny Pokemon yelled, startling the maids around her for a brief moment before they went back to fitting her. “... You saw the looks some of those Pokemon gave me as I walked in... They wanted nothing more than for my existence to end. The plan was so simple, Raime. Walk in, tough it out, walk out... I never... I never thought he'd pick me. There were so many better candidates too! Did you see the way he looked at that Mawile? I was sure, everyone was sure he was going to pick her! But... He chose me... A worthless... Stupid... Pathetic abomination...”
“My Lady...” Before the Abomasnow could continue, he was interrupted by a knock on the door before it swung open slowly.
“Forgive me, beautiful Princess of Frostelle, but I couldn't help but overhear your little... Monologue.” Velsdat, the massive Hydreigon from the Royal Hall, had entered the Princesses' fitting room. The small Pokemon was flustered, to say the least, as the Abomasnow bowed, along with every other maid in the room before they went back to fitting the small Eevee. “Let me be one of the first to congratulate you on your ascension from Princess of Frostelle to Queen of Verograndia. We all expect great things from you.” The Hydreigon smiled lightly, his thick scales hiding the sharpness of his large teeth. “Now that the formalities are out of the way...” His smile disappeared as he leaned over the small Princess. The maids made to move away, but the Hydreigon stopped them, telling them that they could continue. “No one here is going to judge you based on your looks, Gwynevere. Not the King, not the Queen, and most certainly not the Prince.”
“B-But... Some of the Pokemon in the crowd... Th-they...” The small Eevee tried to find the words to explain her dilemma, but the Hydreigon nodded knowingly. All too knowingly.
“Let me tell you a story, Gwynevere. By the end of it, I hope you will understand what our Kingdom is striving to achieve, and more importantly, I hope it will give you the strength to not only shrug aside the mere looks some ignorant Pokemon may give you, but to look at them with kindness and try to make them understand what it's like.”
“The Festival of Choosing carried on without incident. Save for the baby Pichu that tripped in the middle of the parade, seriously how'd that little scamper get past the Royal Guard? Anyways, I'd say it was an uneventful success. Which, honestly, I'm surprised. None of the Pokemon tried anything, and I know for a fact that at least SOME of them despised the... Special Princess.” Calamity and Serenity reported to Velsdat. The three flew over the Kingdom's highest point, the excessively tall tower named Hope. Beneath the three flying Pokemon, nestled neatly within Hope were the Prince of Oolacille and the Princess of Frostelle.
“I'm more surprised that the young Princess could maintain her composure. There were definitely some nasty looking faces staring her way.” Serenity shook his head lightly, a small smile adorning his beak. “It makes me look forward to servicing the two.” Calamity scoffed lightly before turning to look at Velsdat.
“So, what? We just fly over the two until one of them decides to push the other off?” She laughed haughtily, forcing a wry smile on Velsdat and a look of disgust on Serenity.
“ Well, that is our primary reason for flying over them. We don't want a repeat of the Woeful Princess Rapunzel, now do we?” Velsdat laughed, Calamity joining him as Serenity shook his head.
“Surely our Prince would never do that...” As the words left his mouth, a small head poked out from the side of the tower. All three Pokemon looked down, biting their words almost instantly, time seeming to stop. Then another head joined the first one, and they realized that they were merely enjoying the view. The three shared a sigh of relief as they continued to fly above the tower.
“Way to almost jinx it, bird-brain...”
“North, South, East and West. You can see it all from up here. Well... Maybe if you had superb eyesight.” The small Prince chuckled nervously. Smiling slightly, the Eevee nodded as she drank in the view.
“It's still quite the sight, my Prince... You can see your entire Kingdom, the forest, the valley and... Well, I can't see the ocean... But I know it's just beyond that massive stretch of land and just thinking about it ripples my fur!” She giggled slightly before coughing and regaining her composure. “Needless to say, I'm impressed.” Her fur glistened with the light of the setting sun, her normally gray eyes radiating a brilliant gold. The Prince caught himself staring before coughing lightly himself.
“Princess... You are by far one of the most beautiful Pokemon I've ever had the pleasure to lay my eyes upon.” The Prince bowed, catching the Princess off-guard slightly. “I am happy, no, honored, no, happy AND honored to be in your presence. Please, don't think any less of yourself because of your fur.” The Princesses ears twitched lightly before a small smile spread along her face.
“In truth, my Prince... Before I came here, I thought of myself as an abomination. An unwanted eyesore that spat on the face of Verograndia. I was raised to believe that I should be ashamed of my looks, to simply bow my head in shame whenever someone called me out. I believe... For the first time in history, I was the first Princess that was raised to believe she was less than filth... And, as ashamed as I am to admit this, I did believe it...” The small Princess looked down, her small frame quivering slightly. Hesitating for a moment, the Prince wrapped his arm around the young Eevee and squeezed her gently. “When I laid eyes upon the King for the first time in my life... I saw, for a brief moment, this mad glint in his eye. And then he struck me and barked at me, telling me to never look up at him again. My Mother was the same, but she still cared for me in her own way. She taught me to always keep my head bowed, even to the Pokemon I would soon govern. Can you believe it? A Queen that bows to her people, not out of respect or decency or or or out of kindness and compassion... But because she's ashamed of what she is...” The Prince wrapped both of his arms around her and squeezed tightly. Hesitating, the Princess nuzzled the back of the Prince lightly before continuing. “For the longest time... I wished that they would have just killed me at birth and tried to have another child...”
“No.” The Prince pressed his head against hers, still squeezing her tightly. Surprised, the Princess looked back at the Prince, his pink eyes staring into her gray ones.
“N-No...? But you-” Before she could finish, the small Prince shook his head.
“No. I swear to you, on this day, that by the end of my reign as King of Verograndia, everyone will see Shinies as an equal, and view with them as much respect as any other Pokemon deserves, if not more so and th-” Before the Prince could finish, the small Princess cut him off by pressing her lips against his. Calamity and Serenity, who had been watching from a safe distance behind the two, stared, slack-jawed at the sudden action.
“... Now, let's not interrupt each other, okay?” The Princess asked innocently as she looked up at the Prince. Dumbfounded, his face a shade of at least fifty different reds, the small Prince merely nodded slightly. “As I was saying... All of that changed a little over a month ago, when they told me that I was going to Oolacille to meet the Prince and see if I was “worthy enough of becoming Queen”. I can't tell you how ecstatic I was, not because I was going to Oolacille but, because... For the first time I could go and see how the world looked like beyond the castle and not have my parents eyes glaring down at me. It was my dream come true, and I was not disappointed. My escorts were the most kindest Pokemon I've ever had the pleasure to meet. It was as if me being a shiny didn't matter at all. The mountains we crossed to get here were breath-taking, and the forest even more so. The Pokemon we met along the way were so very friendly. Maybe because I was royalty, but they weren't disgusted by my different coat at all. It was... A breath of fresh air. And then... One face stood out in the crowd... A little Rattata, no more than four. He was staring at me with hateful eyes... And... I remembered what I was. What my place in this world was.”
The small Prince tried to interrupt again, be she stopped him with another kiss, silencing him instantly, and quite effectively. The kiss broke, and the Princess continued. “A month of traveling later, we arrived at your kingdom. The massive Kingdom of Oolacille, all the stories I've read of how mighty it was, they were all true. And the Pokemon, my Arceus, they were so kind. But the face of that little Rattata, it was still imbedded into my mind. I would never let me enjoy myself as long as my presence continued to disgust others. We reached your castle, and I took my place in the Royal Hall... I was almost convinced you would all throw me out immediately, but you never did. And then you... Then you... You... Chose me.” A small smile spread across the Eevee's face as she looked up into the Ralts' eyes.
“I was confused at first, and honestly, quite scared... But... Amongst the confusion, the horror, the timid little emotions boiling within me was happiness. The happiness I denied myself. Of course all it took was the face of that little Rattata to wipe it away, but then, as I was yelling at my escort about my confusing feelings, your mentor came in. Velsdat, a beautiful name. He had congratulated me with a soft smile and, sensing my dilemma, told me a story... A beautiful story from a beautiful Pokemon. Because of him I was able to look at the Rattata in my mind and, for the first time in my entire life, look down at someone and smile. And just like that he was gone, and happiness overwhelmed me. I cried into Velsdat's massive frame for the longest time...” A small blush donned her features. “It felt like an enormous weight was lifted from my entire being. If it weren't for him, I don't think I could have made it through the rest of the Festival. And of course, I have you to thank as well, my Prince. If you hadn't chose me, I would have gone home, still as timid and closed and miserable as I was, without a doubt, and kill myself.”
The small Prince gulped slightly. There was no way he was going to tell her that him choosing her was a spur of the moment thing now. Nevertheless, he smiled warmly, realizing that, after hours of inner turmoil ate away at him, he had made the right decision. Kind of.
“My Queen-” He was interrupted again by another kiss.
“Please... Call me Gwynevere.” She smiled brightly at him, her face much more dazzling and beautiful than the first time he'd seen her in the Royal Hall.
“Then call me Crails.” With a warm smile, he sat down beside her and looked on at the setting sun. “Let's enjoy the sunset together.”
“This is Velsdat. Hope passed without incident. Reporting in.”
