Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Three
Age 13
Thankfully it wasn't just the students that saw what happened, the teacher had as well. While you felt bad that Max's friends were the ones getting punished, because that caused tension inside of Max, you weren't sad that it was them at the same time. They deserved to get punished because what they did, what they had planned to do, was not only really stupid but mean. They were going to trap a baby pokemon and take him away from his mother. It would have been different if they had been there since the pokemon had been hatched so he could have formed a bond but no, no they weren't. Not to mention it would have been considered stealing too.
What was a little more upsetting than that was the fact that after the initial shock, Rorsh moved away from you to go lay in the sun. Your hand curled back up as you watched him leave. You had been going to pet between his ears and he just up and left. A frown darkened your face as you stared at your hand. You were going to have to remember that as an Espeon, Rorsh was probably going to be very peculiar about his fur from now on. The hairs were so fine that he would be able to pick up on subtle changes in the air around him which he would be able to use to predict movement. The change was new to him too - more drastic as it was his body. He'd have to get used to that new sensation and sensitivity. So it was no wonder he didn't want to be touched. The rejection still hurt.
"That was awesome," a voice snapped you out of your reprieve.
You looked away from the spot where Rorsh had settled far away from the gathered group to see Max's congratulatory smile. A blush started to spread across your face as you looked down at your feet but then you took a deep breath and pushed it back. It had just been a quick wave of embarrassment from drawing attention to yourself, really cute attention at that. And sure there was a whole crowd giving out similar comments but...well it felt more personal coming from him.
"Thanks."
There wasn't much more to be said as the teacher came back over once they had finished reprimanding the troublesome boys. Everyone was given instructions to clean up where they were eating so they could get ready to go back to school. Thankful for the reprieve from a mildly embarrassing situation, you went back over to where you had been sitting for lunch and cleaned up. Half of your lunch was still untouched but there was nothing you could do about that.
As you made your way back over to your teacher to follow her back to the bus, you saw that Max was getting into an argument with his friends. Judging by the feel of things it was a pretty bad one too. They were obviously having some drastic philosophical issues. You tried to ignore it for the simple fact that it was none of your business, however you found that your eyes kept drifting over to them. It didn't last long as everyone else was ushered into the bus.
This time you chose a spot in the front, knowing that Max and his friends were most likely going to choose the backseat once more. As much as you were satisfied that they were punished, you weren't ready for forgive them. Or at the very least you didn't want to get into that awkward silence for the whole ride. As it was the ride was already going to be quiet on the way back, no need to add awkwardness to the mix. And that first part was an easy fix, actually. You pulled a cord out of your pokegear which was attached to your wrist; pressing the end of the cord caused it to unfold until you were able to slip the it around your ear. Once that was set in place you turned on the radio and listened in to your favorite music channel with your head leaned against the window.
"Are you tired?"
You open your eyes to see that Rorsh had climbed up on the seat next to you. Standing at three feet tall from shoulder hunches to the ground he was actually taller than you while you sat. But only by a little. It was extremely weird. Not to mention that itch in the back of your mind as he somehow talked to you was unreal. It was like it was cracking a door open somewhere in your head, one that was rusted and didn't want to open all the way so it had to be done little by little. And it was so strange to "hear" something other than just your own voice! There really was nothing quite like it. Not even dreams seemed to be a good comparison, though they were the closest.
You shook your head as you frowned. Pokemon weren't allowed to go to school with normal humans - they weren't even allowed to be on the playground. Students who brought pokemon had to keep them in their pokeballs and those balls had to be secured away. But here he was sitting on the seat beside you like that was the right thing to do. How did he even get passed the teacher anyways?
"She moved out of the way when I walked passed."
Your mouth opened up a little bit at the intrusion into your mind. Then there was his answer to consider. You looked at him as you tried to figure out why your teacher, who wasn't known as the easiest of adults to get along with, would have moved aside for Rorsh. Sure he had just saved some of the students but he wasn't the most intimidating thing out there...he was still really cute. Though that cuteness was more in an 'aren't I majestic' sort of way.
"You're not supposed to be here," you whispered to Rorsh.
"I will go where I please."
The glare you gave him was quite usual, expected almost. He had always been a bit pushy. It was just that he used to be quiet about it; like he'd do what he'd want but he wouldn't make a fuss about doing it. At least not one you used to be able to hear. Now it seemed like that was going to change, now that he could communicate in a verbal way that you could understand. You got the feeling from him that he was enjoying it despite the fact that he, himself, was still getting used to this as well. At least you weren't alone.
The teacher nervously sat in the middle of the bus when the last student finally made their way into the transportation. With a rather stiff position, you waited to be scolded for the fact that Rorsh had decided to join you on the trip back to school. But it never came. That had to be the strangest thing to happen all day and it kept you feeling uneasy all the way back to school.
You know who didn't look uneasy? Rorsh. He seemed like a pro at riding in the bus even though it was his first time in one. He sat in his seat like he was on show, front paws always between his back two. His body moved with the motions of the vehicle as it hit bumps or took corners. It wasn't that he had ever been ungraceful as an eevee. It was just that he wasastonishingly so now that he was an Espeon. It was almost unfair. While you were still growing into your body, getting used to the changes you naturally undertook at this time, he was suddenly all down growing up and practically perfect.
You felt his smug satisfaction at your thoughts of his 'perfection' even if you couldn't see it on his face. Oh great, if you weren't careful with your own thoughts now he was going to turn into an arrogant prick. The school bus started to pull into the school's courtyard as nerves started to grip at your insides, making you shiver. If you weren't careful...Rorsh was going to get to be a problem. If he didn't want to listen to you anymore there really wasn't anything you could do to stop him. It wasn't like you could forcibly recall him back into a pokeball as he'd never had one before. And now that he was, more or less, fully grown into his evolutionary state you couldn't force him into a pokeball either. Not without battling him with a borrowed pokemon and that was something you were unwilling to do. So if he wanted to go rogue and mess with people's minds...there really wasn't much you could do about it. Just like you couldn't do anything about it if he wanted to run off on his own…
You felt his muzzle on your shoulder even as those thoughts sent goosebumps up and down your arm. You felt him huff, his breath being blocked from hitting your ear by the braid you wore.
"You are my human; I wouldn't leave you behind."
That thought was oddly comforting in it's strange, possessive tones. You relaxed but only a little as he moved his head off of your shoulder. You felt him turn in his seat and hop down to the metallic floor. He looked back over his shoulder with that 'well?' sort of expression before starting to walk off the bus, leaving you to start the procession of students.
Trying to hold your head high and pretend that this wasn't some unusual event going on, you did just that. And it was a lot easier than you thought it was going to be. Right up until the point where you looked back and you could just feel how many eyes were on you. But about that time, Rorsh had swirled back to bump his head on your ribs. You could feel his ears flicker behind your arm and the tuff of fur running along his cheekbone brushing up under your arm. Considering that he was practically 3/5ths of your height, it wasn't that hard to realize that if he wanted he could just push you over. That wasn't his goal, however, and you were grateful for that. Carefully, mindful of how sensitive he must have been now, you placed your hand on top of his head. Still as warm as ever.
And wow, his fur was like the lightest silk you had ever felt. If you had hair like that you'd probably have been flaunting it around too.
"Don't get a big head," you whispered when you felt how proud he was already.
Rorsh let out what you assumed was a laugh before looking around. He'd been to town once or twice but that had been as an Eevee. No doubt everything looked different now that he was a whole lot bigger. And it all probably felt different too as he could feel even the smallest changes in air current. Though just because he could feel it didn't mean he was perceiving everything to his full capabilities. You knew that he would need time and experience to get good at the sensory aspect of his new body. Just like how children had to grow up to learn how to use all their motor functions.
"I am not a child," Rorsh reminded you in a quiet mind-tone.
You looked down at him as your eyes bunched together. It was almost giving you a headache to hear him talking like that over and over again. Like you kept feeling something on the tip of your tongue wanting to come out and yet at the same time that rusted old door wasn't moving fast enough. He definitely wasn't going to be the only one who needed to get used to new things.
"No. I guess this makes you older than me. You sound older than me," you commented back in a whisper as to not draw too much attention from other students.
Rorsh looked up at you sharply, as though that notion was both something to be offended by and pleased by at the same time. Emotions were complicated things. But he didn't "say" anything else as the teacher finally took lead. You did notice that he seemed to stick rather close by as the other students started to close the gap. And it wasn't long before you felt a hint of anxiety from him from all the different things he was feeling in the environment.
Soothingly you pet down his head with the fur. Your touch was feather soft when you felt him lean into it. And you didn't remove your hand even when you took a seat at your desk. He sat to the lesser used aisle side as the teacher settled back in for your lessons. Considering how long it had taken to get to and from your ranch as well as the time spent there, the lessons weren't that long. It was pretty much just a summation of the information distributed on the field trip and then it was off to packing up to head home.
