It was a beautiful morning. Sky above Dubrovnik, thanks to the rising sun, was in a pleasant pinkish-golden color. The streets of the old and new town woke to life. Between the tenements already was an exchange of gossip, spices and wine. The sea breeze carried the coolness and sound of the sea. Real idyll.
Well, it depends for whom.
Sushi bar in Dubrovnik was one of the best in Europe, but Zenigata didn't touch anything. Not because he didn't like it; local cooks knew on his profession. He was hungry, but could'nt swallow anything. He had no idea why. Maybe because when he appeared at the police station with his hand in a sling, the commander almost without hesitation sent him for leave of absence? Maybe because he had so much free time that he began to think about the things that he tried not to think? Divorced, his daughter even doesn't know who he is, adopted son had gone mad and lost, no private life...
"It's better for you to eat something, because you look miserable, Pops" at his table sat a slim young man in a blue jacket. This voice…
"Lupin," Inspector hissed clenching his fists, "What are you doing here?"
"I heard that they sent you in a quiet area, so I decided to see how you're doing" thief-gentleman looked at the sling "You fell down the stairs?"
"None of your business" Zenigata gritted his teeth. If only he had handcuffs...
"As you wish" Lupin shrugged, "Oh, don't look so sour, Pops. I can stay here a little longer and a take Tito's Cadillac if it'll improve your mood."
"Shut up, I don't want your grace," Zenigata grabbed Lupin's tie with his good hand "The fact that you're on my right, doesn't mean you're safe."
"But you don't have handcuffs, do ya?" said maliciously Lupin. Now only the people around the inspector refrained him from suffocation the thief.
"So I'll drag you on your command for your damned..." Zenigata stopped and stared. Opposite the restaurant across the street was vinoteka, or wine shop, where the young woman entered. She had caramel shade of skin, dark hair and blue eyes. He knew those eyes. The thief of crown!
"Give me a moment" he muttered releasing Lupin's tie and headed for the store. Thief-gentleman looked at Zenigata's plate.
"Well, it seems that we were alone now," Lupin grinned to portion of sushi.
Which for obvious reasons was silent.
---------------------------
Eris wasn't so frequent client of Vinoteka as it might seem. She slowly consumed a wine and in addition only on some special occasions. But today was a special occasion; there came her last order, and she wanted to pick them up as soon as possible. These were two unusual specimens of wines, created thanks to the joint efforts of masters from Croatia and her homeland: Diamond Snow and Blood Moon.
Eris had heard about them very favorable reviews and was going to check them out.
"Snails came out for feed" she asked a dealer behind the counter in Croatian language. At the same time she laid before him a purse of gold coins from Spherus Magna.
"Again will be holes in the leaves," said the man, grabbed payment and quickly gave her two bottles. Eris packed them into her backpack. Now just go home and...
Then to the Vinoteka cop with hat and trench coat came. Eris recognized him without a problem. Zenigata...
"I wasn't here!" she hissed to the seller and hid in the back of wine shop. Although knowing her luck, it won't succeed, never in her life.
Zenigata looked around the store with wine. Nothing special, but the guy behind the counter looked at him as if he expected that the inspector will start to shoot the goods.
"May I help you, sir?" asked anxiously seller.
"A moment ago came here a young woman," said calmly Zenigata showing a badge of Interpol "Tall, tanned, dark hair, blue eyes, dressed in black."
"I'm sorry, sir, but nobody like that was here" guy was a horrible liar "Maybe she came into the shop next door?"
"What it is in the back?" the inspector barked. Seller paled, but didn't answer. Therefore, the officer moved to the back of the store without any permission or help.
"No, You can't go in there!" the seller protested, but Zenigata already opened the door to the back room. Inside was dark, but the inspector saw the wooden shelves and bottles with a variety of wines. Zenigata took out from his pocket a flashlight and looked around. Suddenly there was a sneeze. The man immediately directed a beam of light in that direction.
"Not on my eyes, no*!" Wanted woman covered her eyes. That damn flashlight's bulb was really strong.
"You...!" Zenigata grabbed his handcuffs on a rope and pointed them at the girl's wrist, but she broke into a run and fled from the store. Inspector followed her. The Seller tried to close him with the wine, but the agent of Interpol hit with his shoulder the door, which sprang and stunned Croatian. "I'll take care about you later; we'll see what you keep there, damn it!"
And he ran outside, after the woman. Funny, but suddenly his broken arm stopped hurt.
