**Author's Note** Hi all, this chapter is a bit long but it's packed with action. Crona and Rayne go on their mission but they end up finding more than expected. Also expect new OC’s to be introduced. But are they really what they seem to be?
Violence warning for combat: I think in the show, dead bodies disappeared into souls just to keep the art clean as a form of censorship. In actuality I think a body still falls dead and leaves the soul or their spirit energy floating above. I won't focus on the gore but expect injuries to be written.

Chapter 3 - Blades in the Night
Rayne followed Crona as they stepped down a short staircase onto a runway. “Huh, from Nevada to San Diego, California. That was a pretty short flight. At least it's not as hot out here as it is back in the academy.”
Crona nodded. “It does help that the DWMA has its it's own private airline for Weapons and Meisters to get back and forth from their missions. We travel all around the world and have travel contracts with almost all countries to help eliminate evil from their lands. Or at least, that was the speech that Maka gave me about it.”
About ten minutes later they were riding in a car headed towards the area where the murders had occurred. Rayne could see that Crona was fidgeting again so he raised his hand for a fist bump and waited. Crona paused for a moment but then fist bumped him back with a smile. Then Rayne decided to speak to him to keep his confidence up. “So what else do you know about the mission?”
Crona was holding Ragnarok in his blade form out in his lap. The little guy that made up the sentient portion of the Weapon raised himself up from out of the blade. “You want to know what information we have on the killer? We have ZILCH!” He said angrily. “But we think they use a sword of some sort. The bodies of the victims are always cut to pieces through and through.”
Crona followed up saying, “Apparently there haven't been any living witnesses to the murders so we don't know who is responsible. But all of the killings have taken place near by National City Park and always at night.”
Rayne just turned to stare out the window at the sunset. “Well… at least we don't have long to wait then.”
About thirty minutes later Rayne and Crona were walking together down sidewalks while Ragnarok was hidden away to not be noticed. “So we’re looking for gangster killers, huh?” Rayne asked but Crona seemed to be looking around at the people of the neighborhood not knowing how he would recognize their target. “Hey, don't worry. I said I would let you take care of the fight but I can probably help narrow the search down.”
Crona looked over at him curiously, “Oh? How is that? Can you use Soul Detect like Scythe Meister Maka can?”
Rayne sighed and looked less than confident at that moment. “Ah, so that is the Maka that you mentioned before. You have friends in high places Crona. But no, I can't use her ability. Or not really. I am what is called an Empath. I can't see the size or strength of souls in people but what I can do is tell what kind of soul someone has and how their spirit energy is feeling at that moment. I assume that our target is going to have a strong desire for violence so that should be pretty easy for me to pick up on.” As they now walked down the hill from a residential street they saw a large grassy field that had two sets of playground equipment. One atop a back hill and another further into the park by the street. All seemed peaceful but the park was far from empty at the moment.
Crowded around a cement table and benches they saw a group of ruffians. There appeared to be about seven in all, five guys and two girls. They all wore either leather or various baggy denim outfits. One particularly large black man was holding one of the girls in his lap while kissing her and the other was sitting upon the table with two of the others talking to her. The last two men stared angrily towards Rayne and Crona as if to intimidate them into minding their own business and walking away. Rayne glared as he read their souls while Crona began to whine nervously. “Those look like gangsters to me. They might be targets for the next attack and I feel like we should save them. But I'm not comfortable seeing how that guy and that girl are kissing like that! They keep moving and wiggling and it looks like he is pulling her jacket off. It's so lewd, I don't know how to deal with that!”
Rayne whispered to him softly, “Those look like some very rough souls. Some of them might already be Kishin eggs... but not all of them.”
Crona shivered, “Do you think that girl is enjoying that? I've never seen two people kissing in public like that! It's so… aggressive! I don't know how to deal with that!”
Rayne saw that one of the guys threatening them lifted up his shirt to show off a gun in his shorts. “No, Crona. That girl isn't enjoying being kissed like that at all. Neither of those girls want to be there with those guys.” But then he grabbed hold of Crona's arm. “Come on. I want to help but they aren't our targets. They are just jerks messing around and if we interfere it might tip off the murderer to our presence.” As he walked Crona away he saw one of the guys lay the other girl back over the table and begin roughly kissing her.
They reached all the way to the far end of the park before they found themselves below a massive bridge that lead to a nearby island. Cars drove back and forth like a freeway overhead and Rayne bit his lip in frustration, a little mad at himself for walking away. It was Crona who saved him from his thoughts as he asked, “Rayne, what are those?” The two looked up at the large cement columns that supported the weight of the bridge. Upon them there were paintings that stretched nearly sixty feet up from the ground on each one.
“Those are murals. The members of the community painted them.” Rayne answered giving Crona a bit of the local history. “It was a long time ago but the city once wanted to destroy the bridge and rebuild something new. The locals here felt that the bridge was part of their community and history. So adults, teens and children all came together and painted these murals in protest to having the bridge torn down. Each tells a story of the community and the feelings of people here. Eventually the city officials decided they didn't want to destroy the artwork so they abandoned their plans.”
“Wow.” He said as he looked up at all of them. “It is really inspiring seeing people come together for a positive cause like that. It makes me happy when I see that there is more to life than just suffering and madness.”
But Rayne suddenly stopped walking and looked down. “Hey Crona…” His friend looked to him curiously. “I'm really sorry man. I don't mean to cause you trouble. But I can't leave things like this.”
“What do you mean?” He asked, recognizing that whatever Rayne was talking about was important to him.
“It's not our business and those thugs back there aren't our target. It will probably ruin our chances of fulfilling your mission… but those girls weren't interested in those guys that were kissing them. I read their souls and their didn't want to be there with them at all. And that isn't cool with me. I might be old fashioned but I hate when guys force girls to do things they don't want to do.”
Ragnarok suddenly spoke up but didn't materialize to stay hidden from view. “So what you're saying is that they're bad guys who need to be punished?”
Crona spoke next saying, “Don't worry, I don't mind Rayne. Ragnarok and I are supposed to be on the side of good now. I'm sure that Maka wouldn't be mad at me for failing my first mission if it was to save somebody, right?”
Rayne grinned and nodded to them. “They might fight back. You okay with that?”
Crona gave a kind of demented grin. It seemed frightened and frightening at the same time. “Oh, that's okay. Back when I was evil I killed lots of men like that before.” Ragnarok gave a hungry sound. “I saw that one of then has a gun. If they start shooting then stand behind me. My blood is black, they can't hurt me with that.” They nodded and turned together to rush back to the upper end of the park. However Crona was confused when Rayne suddenly froze. “Uh, Rayne? Is something wrong?”
Rayne was standing there with his eyes spread wide. “The souls…! They're… so chaotic! Crona! They're disappearing! The killer must be there eating them right now!” He yelled.
“Ragnarok!” He yelled and the blade extended into view in his hand. Then the two made a mad dash up the grass of the park to where the benches were.
“What the-" Rayne asked in confusion. By the time they got there all of the gangsters were clearly dead. Some were beheaded and others were cut clean in half in different directions. Crona and Rayne saw that all of the men laid upon the ground slain but the two girls were still very much alive. Now that they were closer Rayne got a much better look at the two of them.
They were both extremely pale with fiery red hair. They weren't identical but the resemblance between them undeniably revealed that they were sisters. The one who was just slightly taller with straight hair had on a black corset styled top with a fishnet covering over her chest that wrapped around her neck. She wore skin tight pants of black leather which flared just slightly at the bottom. They both had matching black boots with a high heel as well as matching makeup of dark mascara and purple eyeshadow. The shorter of the two wore a thin black top that clung tight to her chest and also wrapped up behind her neck. Her bottom consisted of a velvet black skirt which cut off at mid thigh and the backs of both the girls were completely bare.
“What happened here?! What happened to the men?!” Crona called out.
The shorter of the two grabbed her skirt while trying to readjust it. “What? They were wicked.” She said none too sorrowfully. Rayne blushed a bit as her legs parted giving him a clear view up her skirt. Despite all of the black they wore, her underwear was nothing more than a bright yellow string bikini.
Then the slightly taller sister said, “Hey, we didn't do anything wrong here. Didn't you see those guys pushing me down and pulling my sister's clothes off? Those punks were wanting to rape us.” Rayne noticed that she was struggling with her leather pants. She had what looked to be silk purple panties sticking up out of the sides as if it had been pulled on. Being more observant now Rayne noticed that both of the girls looked like their clothes were slightly out of place all over.
“You didn't answer my question!” Crona yelled feeling a little annoyed. From in his hands Ragnarok gave an excited growl but didn't speak. He was staring at the five souls that were floating through the air. Three were red and two were blue.
The taller sister looked to Crona and seemed a bit put off. “What do you want us to say? They were creeps and they were going to hurt us. Were we supposed to let them?” Then she reached out and grabbed one of the red souls in her hand. “We just defended ourselves.” Then she placed it into her mouth swallowing it whole.
Rayne and Crona both went wide eyed with surprise. Immediately after, the other sister grabbed one red soul and one blue soul. “Hehe. Yet if you have warned the wicked and he does not turn from his wickedness or from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but you have defended yourself.
Ezekiel 3:19.” Then she proceeded to eat both of the souls she held.
“What? Hey, wait a minute!” Crona called out but he was ignored.
The taller sister spoke next. “Ugh, come on Autumn. It's ‘delivered’ not ‘defended.’” Her tone seemed annoyed as if this were far from the first correction she had needed to give.
“Oh yeah, hehe. You were the one who said defended, weren't you? Sorry Scarlett.” The other said apologetically.
Then as the taller girl, Scarlett, reached out for a blue soul Rayne finally spoke up. “So Autumn and Scarlett huh? You're sisters right?”
Scarlett was the one to speak up first saying, “Oh, the long haired boy speaks hehe. That's right, not like it's hard to tell though. Oh and it's actually Scarlett and Autumn, not Autumn and Scarlett. I'm the older sister.”
“Yeah, by only four minutes...” Autumn said agitatedly. She then turned to the boys and said, “We’re twins but not identical.”
Suddenly both girls looked surprised as a screechy voice seemed to come out of nowhere. “Will you two jokers stop standing around?!” Ragnarok screamed.
“Who said that?” Scarlett asked as she wrapped her dark fingernails around the soul in her hand and swallowed it.
“Rayne…” Crona whispered. “They're eating Kishin eggs and human souls, I don't know how to deal with that.”
“Hmm?” Scarlett asked. “What, are you saying the blue ones and the red ones are different somehow? They both taste the same to me.”
“Crona….” Rayne responded. “These girls…” He spoke softly as he glanced at their spirits. “... Their souls are beautiful.”
The twins both looked to him surprised and Scarlett seemed to blush a little. “Come on, who says things like that?”
Suddenly though all four of them were taken by surprise at the sound of tires screeching. They all looked as an old Chevy Impala lowrider car screeching to a halt. Then they all grimaced nervously as the vehicle drove right over sidewalk and up the grass toward them. The pair of meisters and the pair of twins dove away from each other as the car ramped right up between them before stopping. Quickly several large gangster types got out of the car, each wielding various weapons such as knives, chains and baseball bats. “There you are you little bitches! We're going to make you pay for what you did to our homeboys!” One very Latin sounding man said threateningly. “We’re going to break those pretty legs of yours and then I'm going to make you watch as I torture each of you in front of the other!”
The two girls were now surrounded by three men on either side of them while they looked up from the ground. Just then two more men got out of the car on the Meisters side. “Hey man, check this out! There's two more little punks over here!”
“Kill ‘em! I'm in no mood for anymore bullshit today!” The one leading the group said.
All of a sudden there was a gunshot and one of the thugs on the Meisters side smirked after having pulled a gun on Rayne. He looked surprised though seeing the pink haired boy suddenly standing in the way and looking unharmed. “My blood is black… didn't you know? You can't hurt me like that.” Crona said a little dementedly. “You just tried to kill my friend. I… I don't really know him. I just met him today… but he was nice to me. I won't forgive you for trying to hurt him.”
Rayne grinned from behind. “Crona, these guys souls are Kishin eggs... All of them.”
The boy nodded. “Ragnarok, screaming resonance.”
“FINALLY!” Called a mouth that materialized at the base of the blade which greatly freaked out the shooter. “EEEYYYAAAAAAAAAAA!!!” The sword screamed which instantly made everyone else cover their ears in pain. Then there was a slice as the shooter's gun hand fell to the grass, followed then by his head as well. Instantly a red soul began floating in the air as the body collapsed.
“Aw HELL NO MAN!” Yelled the thug who was next to him.
Then the leader screamed, “Alright! Everybody! Kill these fools! Hey, wait… where'd the chickies go?!” The thugs around him saw that the girls were gone from the ground and were now standing hand in hand behind one of the six.
“I'm sorry man, they got me…” The thug said as blood coughed from his mouth. Then they watched as he then fell in half at the mid chest level.
“GET THEM!” The leader yelled and all hell broke loose.
Rayne tried to see what was happening with the girls but two thugs suddenly slid over the car towards them. The one who was already there whipped out with a chain that quickly wrapped around Ragnarok. “Gotcha!” He said pulling the blade down. Then he used his other hand to punch Crona in the face repeatedly.
“Oww!” Crona yelled after he was hit. “Owww! Not again! Oww! Stop hitting me I don't like you hitting me!”
Then the other two closed in on Rayne, one on the right had a bat while the other thug on his left had a knife. Not wanting to get closed in on, Rayne quickly dove into towards the knife wielder. “Come on!” He yelled and leaned forward drawing the thug to strike him. Just as the hoodlum did, he pulled on his trenchcoat to catch the blade while Rayne positioned himself beside his attacker. Kicking down and to the side against the punk’s knee he heard a crack as he broke his attackers leg. Without hesitating Rayne then thrust both his palms into the thugs side unleashing his spirit energy, “Soul Force!” The effect had sent the thug rolling unconscious through the grass.
“EEEYYYAAAAAAAAAAA!!!” Rayne looked up hearing Ragnarok scream again. Crona used Soul Resonance up the chain and into the one holding it until he also coughed blood and collapsed.
Now the man with a bat was standing in front of Rayne looking pissed. “You're some kind of little martial arts freak! That won't matter though because I have a longer reach than you!” He said pointing with the bat.
Rayne was observing his opponent deciding how to strike when he suddenly heard a scream. “SCARLETT!” Looking over he saw that Autumn had yelled. There were two more Kishin souls floating in the air beside them but one of the remaining thugs had just caught the older sister in the gut with a tire iron. She collapsed to her knees after the metal bar had slammed into her stomach.
“I get it now.” Said the lead thug. “All I've got to do is keep you two away from each other. You can't do a thing on your own…. Do it!” He yelled and they saw the other thug suddenly raise the tire iron right over Scarlett’s skull.
Rayne shot a glance to Crona who nodded and the dark haired boy ran as fast as he could. Jumping into the air Crona caught his feet with Ragnarok and helped throw him over the car. The thug wielding the iron looked up in surprise as he yelled, “Soul Force KICK!” Then he dive kicked right into the side of the thugs head. There was a spark of spirit energy and the mans head spun around before collapsing with a Kishin egg floating in the air.
“Are you okay?” Rayne asked to the redheaded girl who was still collapsed to her knees holding her stomach. No response came from her though.
“Hey! LOOK OUT!” Autumn yelled and Rayne looked up to see the lead thug in his face. He tried to move away but wasn't fast enough as he felt a dagger slide into his right shoulder. Rayne sharply gasped and quickly kicked between his legs while skull bashing the man in the nose. It was enough to drive the attacker back but now Rayne staggered feeling blood running down his chest.
“Rayne!” Crona yelled and had no trouble leaping back over the car himself to stand directly in the face of the lead thug. “I think Ragnarok should take your soul now.” Then he started exchanging blows back and forth with gangster.
Rayne winced, holding his wound tightly while it bled. He looked around seeing Scarlett still not moving while Autumn looked shaken like she didn't know what to do and Crona was distracted going toe to toe with the knife wielder. He was faster than Crona could keep up with. His pink haired friend had been stabbed more than a few times but Ragnarok made the damage negligible. It didn't add to Rayne's confidence when the bat wielder now stepped around the car towards him. “Heh heh! Not so spry on your feet now, are you? It's time to paint the grass with your brains!”
Rayne looked around again. There was no help to be found. Crona was busy and he needed to help himself, Scarlett was down, Autumn was scared, everyone else was dead or unconscious and the bat wielder was approaching. “Crap!” Rayne spat and rushed up to his feet. The thug took a defensive step back just in case but was surprised when his target ran to the redheaded girl who was still standing.
“Hey! Don't touch me!” Autumn yelled as Rayne grabbed her hand and pulled with his left arm to swing her around.
“I'm sorry but this is all I CAN THINK OF!” After pulling the girl off balance his adrenaline fueled him in reaching down to grab her by the leg. Then using her momentum he put his left hand on her back and he yelled with the intention of throwing her towards thug as a distraction. What he didn't expect was the feeling of his hand getting stuck when he touched her skin.
“No wait, not my back! HA HA, HA HA, THAT TICKLES!” She yelled as he was mid swing with her. But when his fingertips pushed against her skin and spread outwards to spread his grip she suddenly begin to glow and her back wrapped around his hand. “Oohhh my, that feels nice…” Rayne felt her weight and momentum carry him forward until the man was painted red in a gush of blood.
The top half of the baseball bat lay sliced clean through while Rayne stood amazed by what had happened. There was a shimmering blue metal that covered his forearm and spread out over his fingers. As he looked at it closer he saw the alloy was just slightly transparent and the shimmering was caused by an iridescent hue throughout it's material. Part of the psychedelic structure extending beyond his hand hand shaped into several scythe like blades. There was one protruding from each finger and one extended from his thumb. The blades stretched out about three feet long from each of his fingertips. In the base of his hand there was a hinge joint of the same material that connected like a net over his palm.
Rayne flexed his fingers and heard the impaled thug scream as the blades responded to his movements. “It's weightless…” He whispered in surprise. Effortlessly he pulled his hand back leaving the thug to collapse dead on the floor with a soul floating in his place. He spread and closed his fingers watching the blades move seamlessly with his fingers. They recoiled and extended as he made a fist and pointed his fingers. Even forgetting about the pain of his stab wound he used his right hand to explore the smooth feel of the wonderous metal. “So cool to the touch… you are amazing.” His voice sounded breathless as he marveled at the Weapon and he noticed how the blades suddenly felt warmer after he praised Autumn’s form.
“EEEYYYAAAAAAAAAAA!!!” Ragnarok screamed again, drawing his attention.
Looking over he saw the remaining gangster was bleeding from his mouth but looked otherwise unharmed. Crona hadn't managed to land a strike yet. “Shut UP!” The thug yelled and stabbed at Ragnarok right where the mouth was screaming. The Demon Sword choked on the knife trying to spit it out. “Aha! So you DO have a weak spot!” And then he elbowed Crona in the eye which sent him knocked back to the ground.
Rayne winced as the pain returned to his shoulder but he felt fortunate his wound was on the opposite side from Autumn. “So you are a Weapon?” He asked. “You're a bladed gauntlet?”
“That's right!” Her voice cheered from his hand.
“Hey boy!” A very angry voice called out. Looking over he saw Scarlett finally looking up from where she was kneeling. “What… do you think… you're doing?!” She winced. Rayne could tell it was hurting her to talk. “Get your fingers… out of my sister!” She forced out but then started coughing.
Suddenly his left hand felt hot and Autumn shouted, “Shut up Scarlett! I like him!” Rayne looked surprised at this and then realized he could see the girl reflected in the blades. He blushed and looked away after noticing she appeared naked in the reflection. But a long pale arm with dark painted nails reached out from one of the blades to turn his face back towards her. “I mean come on, what girl doesn't like being called weightless and being praised?”
But then he looked back as Scarlett replied, “Heh, I know. I like him too. I mean, he did just save my life and all.” Then the three of them heard grunting as they saw Crona on the ground. He was getting tired and having a hard time with simply blocking attacks now. “So boy…” Scarlett asked to Rayne. “Would you misuse us?” She asked shortly and just gave him an inquisitive glare.
Rayne smirked. “Abuse the two of you…? Heh, never. How could I… when you two are more majestic than anything that I've ever seen!” Then he leaned forward and focused with the last of the energy he had left. “Spirit kick…” Rayne shot off towards the gangster who was still attacking Crona.
Meanwhile Scarlett blushed for a second time. “Majestic? Us? Heh, seriously who talks like that?” Then she turned to expose her back toward Rayne. She smiled at him as he ran passed. Reaching down with his right hand touched her back and spread his fingers out as if slipping his fingers into a glove. She giggled and disappeared into a flash of light. Crona could only watch as the knife in the gangster's hand flew off into the air along with several severed fingers. Rayne had just lept by and after swinging an arm behind him the thug leader split horizontally in separate three lines.
**Author's Ending Note** Yeah, one thing that always bothered me is that DWMA students travel all around the world from America to Africa and Europe and South America but it never says how they get there or get back. There is no evidence of teleportation for them so I made up that they have their own private airline. I find that more amusing than just skipping mysteriously from one location to another. Oh and yes, the DWMA is located in Nevada, that's actually canon.
I was being a little vague on the name of the park but heavy on the physical description for a reason. I felt like all you really needed to know what was included in the writing.
Now, as for the two new characters Scarlett and Autumn. They are both a matching pair of bladed gauntlets. Scarlett is the right claw and Autumn is the left claw. However they have a very unique design. The look of their metal is a kind of psychedelic blue. The blades are slightly transparent and they shine iridescent colors as they move. More specifics about their design in both Weapon and human form will come in the next chapter.
