The first few days after their meeting was uneventful. Just them learning how to communicate with eachother.
As they sat down to breakfast Shade thought. Thought about the unconfortable bus ride as far as her money could take her. Then about the boat trip and sea sickness. About saving her little companion.
The backroads of the wilds is what they were sticking too. They weren't even traveled much by trainers, if at all.
She did have to appreciate how much she was learning about nature out here. The real wild life and the wild itself.
Back home, she had the small wooded area between the two small towns, with the little glade in the middle, at the base of the hills. A large grassland stretching out all around that. Not many types of pokemon there and people that did wander out seemed surprised to hear about Sneasel in the area. Even if it was just her family, and there were officially no more there.
In her human home, the mansion, she only recalled a handful of potted houseplants, the large gardens and large lawn, all within walls and a big gate.
She rolled a few grubs and berries into a sweet leaf that Ralts told her about. She took a bite, chewed thoughtfully and watched her companion eat happily. "I cannot just call you Ralts." She said offhandedly.
"Why not?"
"So many pokemon go by just their species name."
"So what do you think I should be called?"
"I don't know. You let me know when you figure out what you would like to be called." Shade answered.
"Okay."
"You're really getting the hang of talking human talk." Shade said and the little psychic smiled. "Just do me a favor."
"Yes?"
"Move your mouth when you use your telapathy stuff to talk with me. Kind of weirds me out hearing the words but not seeing your mouth move."
"Okay!" Ralts moved her mouth and shade started to chuckle. "Tell me what is so funny." Shade's laughter was making her laugh as well.
"You look like a dubbed, foreign movie when you do that!" She said between chuckles. "We'll work on that."
"Okay!" Ralts smiled. "What is a movie?"
"It would be easier to show you. Wait until we get into a town. Maybe they'll have a theater or at least a television."
By late after noon they slogged through the mud. Well, Shade did. Ralts happily rode on her back. She only had to get off once since the sudden downpour that turned the dirt trail into thick mud. That was so Shade could retrieve her shoe.
Now she was making sure to move her feet in such a way to keep her shoes on.
Up ahead the top of a building came into view.
"Finally!" Shade smiled wearily.
In about fifteen minutes the two entered the edge of a small town. It was smaller than the two she had been living between back in Jhoto. She opened up the map and looked it over.
"I can't find my town in Jhoto, but this little place is here!" She complained a little. "Littleroot." Shade rolled the map up. "I think Dad mentioned the place once." She stuffed the map in her bag and walked further in.
"Hey, you look like hell." Came a voice. Shade turned to see a young boy. "WOW! IS THAT A RALTS!"
His enthusiasm and loud voice startled the little psychic, she felt Ralts tense up and cling to her tighter while trying to hide behind her.
"Yes, I know. Watch your language. Also, settle down. It's been a rough few weeks for her and this whole dealing with people thing is new for her."
The boy didn't really listen. He grabbed Shade's hand and started pulling her along. Her bag slipped from her shoulder to drag in the mud as she had to hold Ralts with her free hand to keep her steady.
"You really need to meet the professor!"
In about as long as it took to be greeted by the boy they were pushed into a large building.
Several people mulled about. All in lab coats and Shade had a brief flashback to her father.
She was snapped out of her moment of recollection by the boy. "Hey, Professor, a trainer!" He announced. A small pokemon in the room started to cry.
"He woke a baby." Ralts whispered to Shade.
"Dennis, go home." One man orderd the boy while another stood, turned and began to approach them.
"Yes, Daddy." Was the last they heard of the boy, Dennis.
"Welcome!" The second man said as he stopped in front of Shade.
"I saw you on the television." Shade mentione and he broke out into a toothy grin. "Bird or something." She added as she rolled her eyes, only to have them fall upon a plate with a half eaten sandwhich.
The professor's smile lessened for a moment when she got his name wrong. "Birch, Professor Birch."
"Sorry. Only caught a glimpse of the name and I couln't hear the announcer." She explained.
"Understandable." He gave a short nod then seemed to get excited. "Would you like to see something?"
The last time she heard that it was from a crewman on the ocean liner that brought her over. He pulled out his manhood and tried to pin her. She scratched him, probably cost him and eye and the crew tossed her off the boat.
She tensed and got ready to defend herself but Birch pulled a weird game looking system from his pocket.
"This is my new invention, and upgraded version of the pokedex!" He said happily. He held it like a cellphone and explained what it did. "It identifies and catalogues pokemon!" He said. "I just point it at the pokemon I wish to enter into the database and..." She was pretty sure that he had taken their picture.
The device started to speak in a robotic voice. "Pokemon identified. Ralts. The feeling pokemon. Psychic and Fairy type. A Ralts has the power to sense the emotions of people and Pokémon with the horns on its head. It takes cover if it senses any hostility."
"See? Isn't that..." the device interrupted him.
"Pokemon identified. Sneasel. The sharp claw pokemon. Dark and Ice type. Its paws conceal sharp claws. If attacked, it suddenly extends the claws and startles its enemy."
Shade took a few steps to look over the professor's shoulder and she felt her traveling companion shift onto her shoulders for a better look as well.
Under Sneasel it showed a picture of Shade.
Professor Birch stare at the device a moment then looked Shade over. Wearing black, the way her hair was styled, the way she stood. "You look like a Sneasel."
"Thank you!" Shade beamed.
"Oh my, if this darned device can't tell the difference from an actual pokemon and a costume then... years of work are down the drain! This is due to be released when a promising trainer and friend of Professor Oak arrives!"
"Relax, professor." Shade had been inching closer to the sandwhich, now she had it. She tore half off and handed it to Ralts. "Probably just some of this wasabi on the lense."
"Yes, yes..." He began cleaning hisnhands then wiped the device but stopped when he looked up. "Did you eat my sandwhich?"
Shade smiled in a way that said she wasn't really sorry but Ralts wouldn't have been able to lie at all, she had sauce all over her face and even burped.
"How about a deal. I'll help test this thing and we call it even?"
"I suppose that would work." He answered. "So how long have you been a trainer?"
"I'm not." She stated flatly. "Not yet anyway. I don't suppose you could help us with that?" She motioned between herself and Ralts.
"Oh, sure, sure!"
After a few hours of going over the basics Shade made the quick trip up the road to Oldale to retrieve componnents for the other devices Birch was developing. Ralts had stayed behind with Birch, she had been shown the television and was immediately involved in a cartoon.
Good thing, being tired and having to keep the little one safe would have been hard. Especially since she had a few run ins with other dark types roaming in the evening. They actually were helpful in exchange for a few treats.
By the time she had returned it was much too late for the average person. Just switching to midnight and the official start of a new day.

She found Birch tinkering at a worktable and Ralts sleeping in a cot.
"Professor." She whispered and set the bag down. He was involved in his work and was oblivious to the world so she started to roam in her own curiosity.
She read diagrams for new pokeball ideas from out of the trash. Skimmed a few books and even turned three boxes of paper clips into sculptures of the Hoenn starter pokemon as well as a Sneasel and a Ralts.
She fished a few broken pokeballs out of the trash somewhere around three in the morning and began to fix them up.
At five am. She was awoken by Birch shaking her awake.
"I'm sorry!" She said as she startled awake.
"You've fixed these pokeballs!" Birch said holding a few up. "This is a good skill to have! If training doesn't work out." He looked one over. "If you wouldn't mind fixing up more, I could help you train and you could save me money on my pokeball budget."
Shade shrugged.
Apparently they just discarded any broken balls. Usually setting them aside for recycling. Not all catches were successful and there was a wide array of damage to admire.
Melted balls where the metal in the hinge was actually burnt.
Balls that had their electrical mechanisms fried which rendered them useless.
Balls that had gotten so cold and brittle that they simply shattered like glass.
Balls that were even bent through sheer force.
When she had asked about the balls being kept, one of the workers explained that they studied the failures in order to make better balls. It made sense.
She wasted time trying to match parts but after a while she stsrted using any parts that were salvagable. She even found balls made from acorns like she had seen in Jhoto.
Even Ralts was helpful for a short time. She took up reading looking at preschool books and after a while got Shade to help her read.

"Shade!" That was the only warning the lab assistant had as the Ralts landed on her back. "I know my name!"
"Yeah?" Shade asked trying to get her ear to stop ringing from the loud shout by her ear.
"Gertrude!" The little Ralts said happily.
"Like that woman on that album Lesther was listening to?"
"Yup!"
"I guess it fits." Shade set Gertrude down and gave her a nuzzle making the little Ralts gigfle happily.
"I swear, you two look like mother and child!" Announced Birch happily as he walked in.
Shade blushed and Gertrude hugged the girl tightly.
"Professor." The word made the man stop and turn. "Gertrude and I have been talking. We sort of agreed thay it is time we really start being a team and start our journy as such."
Birch held up a finger and headed for his desk. He returned quickly and gave Shade a pokedex and Gertrude a luxury ball.
The little pokemon looked it over. She had talked with several pokemon about going into a ball so she wasn't too worried. She tapped it to her head and was suddenly in a place she couldn't explain. Then, she was out and Shade held her ball.
"It's comphy in there!" She smiled.
"And now no one can seperate us now!" Shade picked Gertrude up and Birch gave the two one more gift.
"This is your trainer ID card. It is on the Pokedex, but since this is an experimental version, better to be safe than sorry." He explained. "It doubles as a credit and banking card."
"Thank you, Professor... but..."
"You started by helping me save money, but..." he motioned to several projects and then the Weavile Alphabet pinned to his wall. "You have done so much more!" He gave both of them a hug. "I cannot thank you enough!"
Shade honestly didn't know how to react. She returned the hug and then wordlessly left.
"Why did we not say goodbye?"
"I don't like goodbyes." Shade admitted.
"You're sad." Gertrude pointed out.
"Yes. A little." Shade felt a drop on her head. "Please don't cry, Gertrude. Just... memories. I'm happy, really!"
"I know." The little psychic admitted. "I just..."
"Just what?"
"I saw your parents and brothers. Your sister too."
"You did?" Shade tilted her head back to look up at Gertrude. "I thought psychics couldn't read dark types."
"I guess we have bonded." The little psychic said with sarcasm and shrugged just like Shade does.
"Picking up my bad habits isn't bonding." Shade smiled.
