He plummets to the earth. His wings, though they are flapping frantically, do nothing to slow his descent. The aerial view of Japan would have been a breathtaking one, were it not for the fact that he can't stop his fall, that he can't even go to the Shinigami Realm.
There is a strange sensation of disconnect within him, and fear grips him. His Note isn't with him. Justin had taken it before pushing him into that damnable pool. Separated from the Note, he is cut off from a very large portion of his power, especially since he is in the human realm and the Note is in the Shinigami Realm. That Note is vital to his existence.
While the ground rapidly approaches below him, he suddenly feels his connection to his Note come to life. He can't sense who has the Note, but it is here in the same realm, only it is very far away from him. The connection begins to fade, until it is faint, which nearly sends him into a panic. The connection remains, however, just a tiny pinprick towards the back of his mind.
A familiar cityscape greets him after a few more seconds, and then he realizes that he is falling towards an all too familiar school. His high school.
Why is he falling towards the school, of all places? He had been pushed into the watching pool that lets one observe the past, so… is he truly in the past? He has gained a lot of knowledge, but it is only the basic knowledge as to how that particular pool works. He knows it is forbidden to enter the pool, but not the why of it.
Flinching as he phases through the rooftop, for which he has totally been unprepared for and not expecting, he is startled to realize how human of a reaction that is. Ryuk had been able to phase through any and everything, it had seemed, so it makes sense that he too can also phase through physical objects and surfaces. The incoming second floor he is prepared for, and the sight that greets him, though brief, once he has passed through the floor, nearly has him flabbergasted. The span of time he has, however, before he hits his human self's body, is very brief, and then the world goes black.
His sudden decision to dive into the watching pool of reminiscence, though smart, has separated him from Raito. Ryuk can sense the fledgling Shinigami King a great distance away, over Japan and falling at a stellar rate. It is curious, as to why his King is falling, while he remains aloft, his wings spread wide, and looking down at the White Note he holds, the Greater Shinigami frowns. Is it because this is not in Raito's possession?
Down below him is Great Britain, and he doesn't think much of it, moving to pocket his king's Death Note so that it won't get lost. There is some sort of disturbance in that instant, he isn't able to tell what it is, but it makes him lose his grip on the White Note.
"Oh no!" Ryuk immediately dives down after it, but the Note falls at a speed that should be impossible. In fact, the damn thing seems like it has a mind and will of its own, because he swears that it is falling at an angle. Straining his wings, the Shinigami does his best to catch up to it, and watches in vain as it lands at the feet of the most unexpected person ever.
Ryuk halts his descent, some few feet up above a man who is, by all rights, supposed to be dead. Blinking at the name hovering in front of him, the Shinigami's mouth falls open. It is possible, because he and Raito are now in the past. He can only watch helplessly as L Lawliet stares down at the book that has fallen from the sky.
A thumb is brought up to the detective's mouth, and he lightly nips at as his coal black gaze goes from the book up to the sky. There seems to be some sort of debate as to whether he should pick up this mysterious white book trimmed in black.
Ryuk continues to hesitate, because he isn't sure if he can even pick the White Death Note up now that it has touched human realm soil. After what seems to be further deliberation on L's part, though, the Shinigami continues hovering overhead as the human picks the Note up.
Everything seems to hurt, and there is this nagging feeling that something important has happened. Squeezing his eyes shut tighter, he is vaguely aware that someone is frantically calling his name. And shaking him. He needs to open his eyes, assess whatever is going on and try to figure out why his wings hadn't worked. Forcing his eyes open, a task he finds rather difficult to do, his vision is assaulted by too bright lights which are partially blocked out by large, blurry masses that seemed to be looming over him. There is also glaring red glows that he currently can't make out, hovering over the blurry masses.
"!"
Raito blinks, several times in fact, and everything quickly snaps back into focus. Standing over him is the teacher and the school nurse. The red glows over their heads, which has faded to the point that he can barely see them, are their names and a long complicated mass of numbers that continually tick down. Their lifespans. They are calling for him, but for some reason his brain is taking its sweet time to get things in working order.
Why is everything so difficult? His body also feels so very heavy, compared to the absolute weightlessness he had experienced before. Shifting his body, he slowly pushes himself up into a sitting position and looks around himself then up at the teacher and the nurse.
"Are you okay, Yagami-san?" The nurse aske, reaching down to feel his forehead. She immediately retracts her hand at the iciness of Raito's skin, her eyes going large as a worried look quickly formed on her face. "Would you like to come to the infirmary?"
Raito blinks, having felt the warmth of her hand (though he thinks nothing of it) then gives a slow shake of his head. "I'm okay." I think. He gets up off of the ground, a little unsteady at first, and then eases himself back into his seat. "I'll call my mother or father and have one of them come and pick me up once class is over." A quick glance at the clock tells him he only has another thirty minutes of class to sit through.
"Are you sure, Yagami-san?" This time it is the teacher.
Raito looks around at his classmates, all of whom are staring at him, the girls in concern and the guys in disbelief (for a majority of them). "I'll be fine."
There are faint whispers going around, or at least they are supposed to be faint. He can hear every word being said by his classmates. The girls are mostly concerned for his health, and want to sleep with him. The majority of the guys think that the teacher's pet is merely trying to get more attention.
The nurse reluctantly leaves the classroom while the teacher goes back up to the blackboard to resume the lesson. Glancing out of the window, and thankfully not getting called on due to whatever has happened, he turns his thoughts towards his new situation. He is in the past. That much he is sure of, but he has full recollection of his life already, and knows that his memories aren't some sort of fucked up dream. The faint red glow of names and lifespans over everyone's heads is proof enough. He is obviously in his human body, which he had been falling towards upon his entrance into the past human realm.
Almost too deep in his thoughts, he blinks when a familiar black object appears and falls to the ground in the courtyard outside. He knows what that object is, a thin black notebook with Death Note written on it. It is the one that Ryuk had dropped, and if he is in the past, then today is… I need to get the Death Note. His gaze searches out the clock on the wall and he notes that only fifteen minutes remain until the end of class. Quickly thinking, he raises his hand.
"Yagami-san?"
"May I be excused? I'm not feeling well after all." Raito carefully schools his features to display a look a weariness, his hand going to lightly touch his temple.
"Hai, Yagami-san. Be sure to call your mother or father to come and pick you up."
He lets his expression change accordingly, and Raito gives a shallow nod as he gathers his things. There are quite a few murmurs as he leaves, moving at a slow pace so as to not raise any suspicion. He already has the route he will take mapped out in his head, and the courtyard is a viable path to the school administration office where he will place the call to one of his parents. He has to keep the ruse up, even though he is beginning to feel fine.
Once he is out in the hall and a few feet away from the classroom door he quickens his pace. There isn't anyone out just yet, aside from the appropriate staff. Heading outside, he scans the center of the courtyard for the Death Note. If memory served him correctly, it had fallen beside some bushes in the center, near the sidewalk. Aware that someone might be watching, especially from the classroom he has just left, he takes his time walking along the route that will take him by the Death Note on his way to the administration office.
Relief fills him when he finally comes upon it, and he picks the Death Note up without any hesitation. It isn't the same as his White Note, but he can feel the bond take hold between himself and what he knows to be Ryuk's Death Note. Not my Ryuk, but the one of the past… Well, this one is his Shinigami too, but as he is in the past, the Shinigami holds no loyalty to him just yet. He also has to remember that the Ryuk of this time is still a Lesser Shinigami.
Raito tucks the Death Note into his backpack, then makes his way to the office to place that phone call. It is something that he is secretly dreading, in all honesty.
"The probability that I am hallucinating due to my high-sugar intake is exceedingly low. Studies are inconclusive, and as their subjects are of lesser intelligence I put the chance that I am hallucinating at one percent."
Ryuk gives L Lawliet a blank stare.
"Your explanation that you are a Shi-ni-ga-mi is highly unbelievable. Death Gods do not exist."
Ryuk inwardly sighs and gives his wings an irritated flap, which draws L's gaze to them.
"Yet here you are, hovering in midair with no visible wires, or any possible way to keep yourself aloft. I did not see you until I picked this book up, which also appeared with no reasonable explanation."
Ryuk desperately wants to go and hit his head on one of the trees some thirty feet away.
"You said that I needed to return this book to you so that you could return it to your king. I do not see anyone else around, and you already have a book of your own."
"He's not here, human. Now please give me his Death Note back." Ryuk is ready to just off the damn detective, but he isn't sure as to how Raito will react to it.
"I do not see a name in here, therefore I shall keep the book." L holds the White Note to his chest, having already deduced that if the Death God had been able to, he would have taken the Death Note from him.
Ryuk sighs aloud this time and rubs his face with a hand for a few seconds. He can't kill L. He isn't able to take the Death Note from him, even if it is Raito's. Leaving the detective and the Death Note with no supervision will prove unwise. "Just don't use it and don't let anyone else touch it." He hadn't thought that the human would be able to see him once he picked up the Note, because no other Shinigami can claim the White Note as their own. It is reserved for the one it recognizes as King and that one alone. "I won't let you out of my sight while you have that Death Note, human."
"Hn."
"…Hey. Got any apples?"
