Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Thirty
It had taken a lot of precious time for the Pokémon trainers to band together at the Pokémon center and decide what to do. Based on the average age of the trainers it was no wonder that you felt like you had been among bickering children. After all there had been disputes and most of them had been children. After ten minutes lost you had practically kidnapped all of the younger trainers' flying pokemon and sent them out to look for those responsible. The first Pokémon to return had been a spunky taillow. You had paid no mind to the multitude of reactions as you talked directly to the bird Pokémon. Once you knew about where to find them you and the other trainers whom had their Pokémon stolen, as well as those that had been unaffected by the thievery by some miracle, you headed out.
Anger and fear coursed through you body as you moved through the forest. The foliage was thick but not so thick that you couldn't see where you were going. And right now you had daylight on your side, though that also meant that the robbers had that going for them as well. Most of the young trainers had to run to keep up with your pace.
"I think I've been here!" Max spoke, slightly out of breath as he kept pace with you.
You made a sound of acknowledgement as you kept to the course. Above you, you could hear the systematic calls from the taillow up above as though urging everyone on. You didn't pay enough attention to him in particular to understand what he was saying. The only thing you were listening for was either the signs of the thieves or the sound of your pokemon. You didn't even spare a moment of thought for the children that couldn't keep up. That's how intent you were to get your pokemon back.
"This feels familiar…"
It kind of felt like Max was muttering more to himself than trying to strike up conversation, which was why you didn't respond. Unfortunately that seemed to irritate him and he ended up pulling on your arm to get your attention.
"It's this way," the teenager said with a sort of excited tone.
"Are you sure?"
Max nodded his head quickly. "Uhuh. Positive."
It deviated slightly from where the Pokémon was flying which was why he had to get your attention. However you also realized that the taillow kept swooping about in circles which had started out small and continued to grow. Almost as though they were trying to cover up the fact that they had lost their own trail. You felt torn between following the Pokémon's trail and trusting Max.
"How do you know?"
"I've been in this area. There's a small Cabin this way. If they needed to land and do anything I'd bet that's where they'd go."
You looked back and forth between where Max was trying to lead you and where the trainers were going. It felt like you were being pulled in two as you had to make the crucial decision. Max, however, was so confident about his choice that he started running without waiting for you to make your decision. You panicked; your heart beat quickly in your chest like the wings of a hummingbird.
And just like that it felt like you were being pulled forward by the nose even though your body remained still. You tried to keep calm as your world went monochromatic even though you still felt like you'd lost your balance. As the world unfolded before you , you could see white smoke and flames from every living creature that your vision "passed". Pokemon put off a whole lot more than the usual animals and you realized that it looked the same on Max as it did any Pokémon. His flame was just the same as any of theirs.
It was hard to breathe as your black and white sight rushed passed Max. You felt your body fall to the ground as you tried to keep yourself together. Then suddenly you saw a soft of shadow structure of a cabin and a lot of things that didn't make much sense to you. What you did figure out was that there was a lot of small suns all next to each other, creating something that almost hurt to visualize. Near was something that almost resembled a rainbow, almost. You hadn't had much time to see before your sight rushed back to you like the snap of a very strong, pain inducing rubber band. What you'd been able to tell was that the fire which shifted was still white but it almost felt like it was different hues of white.
You held your head in pain as you shakingly got to your feet. The world still looked like you were seeing it through some sort of filter but you knew you had to get to those lights. So you swallowed thickly trying to push back the queasy feeling and started running. You kept your eyes straight ahead as you knew better than to look at the ground. It already felt like you were constantly falling as you moved. You didn't think adding what your strange, panic-induced sight would make of the ground below your feet.
Even through all the difficulties you were able to catch up with Max. You were able to almost predict the thing that got in the way of your feet as you soon started to take the lead. As long as you kept looking forward and kept moving it wasn't nearly as bad. Your head still pounded at the same tempo of your heart but it was getting easier to overlook.
The trees finally gave way to a small clearing with a very rustic cabin within it. There was even an old fashioned well pump near by. What was interesting was that all of what you saw still looked kissed by shadow and flame but it did seem a lot more tangible than before. Max's reaction to something which seemed like a mere blob to you was disconcerting. No more so than the winded feeling tightening around your chest or the tired sensation that weakened your stance, however. You tried to straighten yourself up as best you could; you had pokemon to save.
Neither you nor Max even made it all the way to the cabin before someone stepped out. They looked to be almost twice your age and they had on the strangest black and white outfit; it looked to be something straight out of a child's cartoon.
"I can't believe it! Team Rocket!" Max said.
You had absolutely no idea who that was. What you were able to guess was the fact that Max had run into them before and based on what you knew about him that meant that he must have met up with this person while he was traveling with his sister as a kid.
"I see my reputation precedes me," the woman looked pleased, brushing back her flamboyantly styled hair. "Well if that's the case, you better prepare for trouble."
"And make it double!"
One of the other humans you'd been seeing through the walls of the cabin stepped out to stand beside the preening female.
"Yeah yeah, to protect the world blah blah blah. Can we move on from that already? It's kind of old. But I shouldn't be surprised, what are you guys...like fifty or something?"
Max had a mouth on him. You turned wide eyes towards him, only to be met with the same image you'd been seeing for the last ten minutes. The worlds was strange like this, only really seeing outlines and fire with smoke.
"OH WHY YOU LITTLE TWERP!"
The man seemed as though he were ready to back away slowly and leave whatever-her-name-was to go on her rampage. At least that's how it was before he heard her say that comment. Then he looked back towards Max as though he was studying him.
"Have we met before?"
"I'm surprised you don't remember me seeing as my sister and our friends stopped you a million times in the past. Guess I shouldn't be surprised though; you guys fail at everything so all those times must not have made that much of a difference."
The way that Max held himself was actually kind of childish. He stood in this sort of sidewards pose with his arms crossed and his nose in the air. If you weren't so pissed at what they'd done you might have rolled your eyes. As it was you started to move over towards where the mini suns creating this massive expanse of light lay, beside them were those five other lights which seemed much more distinguishable than any other. That was until a silver streak raced before you with the sound of claws cutting through the air. You were able to dodge back before that became an issue.
"You Won't get away from Meowth!"
Now this was something you had never seen before. The meowth-shaped being was talking and standing up straight. Sure you'd seen some strange things yourself but you'd never seen any of those things be physical changes. The thing before you was definitely one of the strangest things you'd seen in a long time.
"You can walk on two legs?"
The meowth before you seemed to be thrown off by your question. He cleared his throat as he crossed his arms over his fur covered chest. As you stared at him, however, the world cleared up before your eyes. Your balance felt off and as you stared at the meowth before you while Max bickered back and forth with the man and woman. The world kind of felt a little woozy but you kept yourself on your feet even as all the colors made their way back to your sight.
"Please move," you tried asking.
After all, in your experience, pokemon never truly meant to do harm. If this meowth was with the man and woman that Max called 'Team Rocket' in the background then you didn't want to put him in any danger. He (based on his voice) could have been commanded to stand between you and your pokemon.
"No can do," Meowth said with a sort of accent you'd never heard before. Which was something you noticed now that you weren't so focused on dodging his attack. "I gotta keep all these pretty pokemon for Team Rocket, see. I can't lets you go around freeing them."
"I know that you're just doing what your trainers asked but you need to move before you get hurt."
"Trainers? Who? Jesse and James? HAH!"
That tickled the aging meowth's sense of humor apparently. His crossed arms went over his stomach as he laughed, though it was short lived as you tried to push past him again. With his cat like reflexes he was able to stand in your way once more. Which only helped to draw your ire closer to the surface. You knew that he was only acting on command, or what he thought was his command, but the fact that he was keeping you away from your family was not helping his case at this point.
"They ain't my trainers. Meowth has no trainers."
So...did that make him more like your own pokemon then? Granted you technically were training them and they now had pokeballs but it wasn't always that way. Prior to jumping into the balls to help you out at the pokemon center, both Rorsh and Nox would have been considered wild pokemon. And seeing as they were an espeon and umbreon respectively that would have put them as prize catches. Much like how this walking and talking meowth would have been if anyone took the time to try and catch him.
"Fine. But you still need to move."
"Didn't ya hear me? I'm not moving."
You closed your eyes for a moment and took in a deep breath. You didn't want to hurt him, you really didn't. But the thing you wanted less than that happened to be losing your pokemon. Which was one of the things that this meowth standing in front of you was trying to cause.
"Last chance. I don't want to fight."
"Ooooh, was that a threat? That's rich coming from some human."
He was a condescending little prick of a pokemon, you had decided that much. Sure he must have been strong willed to have been able to force his body to stand up, effectively restructuring his spine, and intelligent to have found a way to learn how to speak in ways that even normal humans could understand...but he was still stopping you from getting back all your friends (...and child but you weren't about to blurt that out.)
When you re-opened your eyes, your hands were in position holding a ball of energy just slightly away from your body. Meowth took a half step back as he looked at what you were about to launch. His eyes shone in the dying light as he stared at you in disbelief.
"Aura sphere? Hows that possibles?"
The absolute second it was ready you launched the attack at the talkative pokemon. Which just so happened to be as he finished that question. Meowth was hit and tossed back, slamming against the iron bars of the massive size cage that held your pokemon. You moved forward towards the cage to make sure that your pokemon were alright and at the same time to make sure that you'd knocked the Meowth out. When you got to him, he seemed to have just barely been about to cling to consciousness. His body appeared to be weakly trying to stand back up even it was failing to do so. He definitely had more heart than physical strength.
"Please stay down. I don't want to hurt you anymore than I have to."
You hated the idea of pokemon battles so to actually fight a pokemon and hurt them, it hurt you somehow. Sure you might have trained with Ember but that was different. That was kind of a mutual understanding with some lines that neither you nor he ever crossed. The flareon was tough but he wasn't vicious about his attacks - he pulled the punches that would end up hurting you the most while leaving the ones in there to teach you a lesson.
"How? How did---that's not normal. Humans use pokemon to fight for them."
"Not everything is always so black and white," you said quietly as you checked over the cage looking for a week point. "I don't use my pokemon to settle my fights if I can help it."
Whoever 'Team Rocket' really was they sure knew how to build cages. Unfortunately all your pokemon seemed to be asleep within it so they weren't going to be very much use. What you didn't see worried you. Instantly you spun around to look at the struggling Meowth.
"Where is my egg?" you asked very pointedly.
"What egg?"
He was lying. You could see it on his face. He kept trying to shift side to side and avoid direct eye contact. He was a horrible liar.
"My egg. Where is it?" You demanded again as you clenched your teeth.
After all of the mental and physical pain you had gone through you'd be damned before you let these thieves steal your egg. Not that you would let them have kept it if it was anyone elses' or if it had come about through more normal means. It was just that as you stood there staring off against the weakened cat pokemon a certain familial rage filled your gut. Even if he was a pokemon he had no right trying to take other people's pokemon away. At least not without asking the pokemon he intended to rescue if that was indeed his plan. And sure, you might fight with them once in awhile but other than Rorsh's disappearing act years ago they had never shown even a hint of wanting to run away.
"It's not yours no more," the Meowth changed his tactic as he finally got to his shaky legs.
Emotions boiled under your skin as you tried to contain yourself. You didn't want to yell out the truth to this pokemon, especially given that he seemed to be able to actually talk. He wouldn't keep your secret - he would have had no reason to. But at the same time the indignation and rage were almost unbearable. He and the other two had taken your eeveelutions and they had taken your egg, your child in a way that you normally didn't want to consider. Yet he kept denying you the right to take all of them back. He was trying to steal them away from you.
As a fiery green aura surrounded you and Meowth took a step back in what seemed to be a mix of awe and fear, you realized that his two human accomplices had released pokemon to take on Max. Oh hell no. What Meowth had called an Aura Sphere appeared quickly between your hands and you flung one right after the other in the direction of the two pokemon about to charge at your friend. You hated fighting pokemon, hated pitting them against one another more, but there was no time to choose to do something else. It had either been act or watch Max get torn into by two poison types. After you'd knocked both of the pokemon away you'd turned back to the cage and did something seemingly foolish. You wrapped your hands around the bars of the oversized cage and pulled. You heard a groan of metal as you held onto it with your hands practically glowing with green light. Then you gave another tug and other; on the third try the bars had been pulled free from the cage.
"Yous can't be human!" Meowth spoke out with large eyes, his mouth hanging open in his shock.
The most you did was cast him a nasty glare as you reached your hand into the cage. All of your pokemon still seemed to be sleeping. As you made sure that they were breathing alright and that their hearts were at about normal level, you spoke out to the cat pokemon in a tone that suggested you were on the verge of screaming at him.
"If you don't get me my egg in under a minute, I will rip your head off your shoulders. Do you understand?"
It may or may not have been a bluff. You weren't entirely sure about that yourself. On one hand that's what you really wanted to do to the three that had caused so much trouble. On the other hand you didn't want to actually murder anyone. You were under no illusions about the fact that ripping someone's head off would murder them.
Meowth scrambled back and for a moment you saw him nearly run on all four legs just like meowths were actually supposed to do. He ran into the cabin and came out with an incubator really quickly. His paws shook as he put the device with the egg inside down next to you, his knees now knocking together. As he sat your egg down a toxic smoke screen filled the area. You were able to throw up a shield at the last moment, even going so far as to make sure that Meowth was trapped inside. His eyes, full of fear and wonder, stared up at you as you tried to wait until the smoke screen cleared. Unlike him yours were frantically trying to search through the smoke to find your friend. Max had been way too far away for you to have put your barrier up around him. Even now you felt yourself nearly giving out. You held your egg as you stayed on one knee, swaying side to side as you tried to stay awake.
You felt hands on your shoulders which made you jump. It must have looked silly all things considering. You tucked your egg to your stomach tightly before looking to see who had touched you. The primarily white and green bodies were easy to identify - somehow a kirlia and gardevoir had gotten through your barrier. They seemed concerned and within moments they too projected a green energy away from their body. Kirlia's seemed to reinforce your barrier with their ability Protect which was interesting by itself because you knew that this evolutionary line didn't normally learn Protect. It was something that had to be taught to them since it didn't come naturally. What else was interesting was the fact that Gardevoir's energy pushed itself directly into you. Your vision cleared up as it became easier to hold your balance. It was your turn to stare at someone with a bit of wonderment in your eyes.
"Thank you," you said graciously to the both of them.
It was pretty easy to realize that Gardevoir had used Heal Pulse on you while the Kirlia used Protect to help everyone ride out the toxic smoke. It was rather interesting to see that Heal Pulse helped you regain energy, regain stamina in a way, rather than the general health that it was supposed to restore. You supposed an argument for energy and health being interlinked could be made but still - it was one thing to see it happen to other pokemon, it was a completely different thing to feel it happen. The sensation was like being blanketed in perfectly tempered water as it soothed away some of the aches.
"Your welcome," the two of them chimed together.
Kirlia decided to add a little bit more, "Don't worry about your friend. Little brother is protecting him."
You nodded your head in understanding. Considering the fact that there was already a kirlia and gardevoir you could only assume that 'little sister' was a ralts. It lightened your heart to realize that this was probably the evolutionary line siblings that Max had described a while ago. You could only hope that it all turned out well.
"Can you see them? Max and your brother?" You asked.
They shook their heads, though you did see the amount of surprise on their face as they realized you understood them perfectly fine. Not many humans could say the same thing. Though they were psychic type pokemon so you doubted that it was the first time that it had happened to them it was probably still a little different. Meowth on the other hand had another reason to be flabbergasted. He fell onto his bottom, tail twitching behind them.
"Yous can understand pokemon?"
You turned critical eyes towards the normal type and nodded. That wasn't something you were really ashamed to admit - it wasn't like anything was going to get hurt if another pokemon knew that you could understand when pokemon near you spoke. Even if he blabbed to whoever would listen it wasn't going to hurt your reputation like knowing you'd delivered a pokemon egg would. In fact, despite the risks associated with getting people asking you about everything you could do, it wasn't even really a concern of yours anymore. There were a lot bigger, darker things to worry about.
The smoke finally died down enough for you to be able to make out the outlines of what was happening. You could see Max protected by a shimmering green bubble and before him stood a ralts. However, what was supposed to be good news soured a little when you realized that the other two humans who were supposed to be nearby with the two poison type pokemon were gone. So was the balloon that you had seen earlier, though that took you a minute to piece together based on what you saw now.
"Looks like your friends left you behind," you spoke to the battered and bruised Meowth.
"Jesse and James wouldn't leave me behind."
He seemed to try to put on a tough face to deny what you were saying. You saw through the chinks of it however as insecurities leaked through. As unheroic as it was you weren't nearly as concerned anymore. Perhaps it was the fact that you were selfish but now that you had your pokemon and egg back, even if the pokemon were still asleep somehow, you didn't feel as pressed to find those who had taken all of the other pokeballs from the pokecenter. Sure, you'd help the others find them but...well, it wasn't as rage inducing anymore.
