Aspirations
Chapter 30
"No time to talk! You're coming with me!"
That was all the warning you were given before your feet left the ground. The wind stung your eyes, forcing you to close them, from the speed at which you were being flown through the air. You could even feel the pressure of the wind against your ear drums. It was such an intense, sudden rush that it was actually painful. You couldn't breathe - the air rushing past you at such speeds made it hard to breathe. Not to mention your stomach lurched from the motion of abruptly being picked up and carried off. All the sensations caused you to panic even as the person holding you did their best to turn you around in mid air so that if you had wanted, you could have buried your head against them to help you see and breathe better.
Tendrils lashed out towards the person as you got your arms between you and your would-be kidnapper. They moved towards the person's exposed throat and started to cut off their windpipe as you tried desperately to catch your own breath.
"It's me! It's Hawks!" The person called out though it was hard to hear over the whistling wind…and the fact that you were choking him.
You froze in your impromptu, panic induced attack. Quickly as you could without causing any damage to their throat, you removed your tendrils. With eyes burning from the first assault of wind, you opened your eyes to see the tell tell elements of his uniform. Then you moved your head slightly so you could try to see his face; he looked concerned but too determined to slow down.
"What?"
The fact that you could even get a question out to be heard after just catching your breath was probably a great achievement. The fact that it sounded weak to your own ears made you internally cringe. Or it would have if your heart hadn't been beating a mile a minute.
"There's been a major attack on Nabu Island," Hawks explained as he tilted his head towards you, practically resting his lips on your forehead.
You might not have been able to see more than his neck that way but at least you'd been able to hear him.
"I've been called in to support the kids and I'm bringing you with me."
The question of why he decided to bring you instead of another Pro-hero danced on the tip of your tongue even as you did your best to wrap your arms up and around Hawks without impeding the motion of his wings. It went unasked as it seemed so silly to ask in mid flight. You didn't want to seem too foolish for asking right off the bat nor did you want to imprint any sort of doubt. If he was to be believed the students were in danger and you could definitely help those that were injured. Though why he didn't bring your aunt, who was far better at surgery, medical procedures, and near-instant healing was a mystery. One that you contemplated during the flight without asking it aloud.
As you accepted the fact that you were the carry on for this flight, you tried to relax into it. You carefully wrapped your legs around one of his, lengthening your body along his as best you could while still tucking your head against his upper chest, protecting your face from the cold by nestling into his jacket too. At which point you focused on regulating your breathing and trying to get back into the swing of things. It had been such a long time since you'd been airborne; a little over a decade by this point. Once upon a time, you'd been used to being in the air…but you'd never actually flown the way a bird did - the way Hawks did in part. You did your best to get back into the motion of it all but it wasn't what you remembered. Everytime his wings would move a different way, you'd feel your heart speed up and your breath hitch. And it had never, ever been at the speed at which he was currently flying at.
Though the island was supposed to have been a lot warmer than where you and Hawks had taken off from, you could barely feel the difference after so much time in the frigid air. You knew that you were shivering despite the layers that you had on; you hadn't been dressed for such travel. Hawks had done his best to help but he really did have to focus on getting to the island as quick as possible and you hadn't wanted to become a burden by complaining during the flight. Though considering that he'd picked you up without asking, any complaints you staged would have been justified.
When Hawks finally slowed down enough for you to safely turn yourself over, scooting up so that he was holding around your rib cage, you got to see the supposedly peaceful island the kids had been sent to. The small town looked wrecked. Parts of the island looked like someone had taken the hammer of the gods to it. And that was putting it nicely. You could feel your heart fluttering away, rising into your throat as Hawks circled the island. He only had to do it once as he'd been dropping feathers down to get a better understanding of the situation.
"Where is everyone?"
"The majority of people are in a cave; it's been blocked in but seems to be okay for now. There are smaller groups scattered around the smaller island. Most of them are near by the cave but there's a small group off near the waterfalls."
"Can you move them all together or are they too injured?"
Hawks shook his head as he started to swoop down towards the ground, regaining the feathers he'd sent out as scouts. "I can't tell without getting closer. If they are hurt, I could do more damage by moving them with my feathers."
You knew that well. "Okay, most are roughly in the same area right? Drop me off near the ones that are separated. I can assess them there and get them back on their feet enough for them to be moved."
You hoped.
Hawks did as requested before taking off to get to the others. You gave yourself a ten count to try to calm the shaking feeling. As you looked around you spotted Iida, Tsu, Kirishima, and Todoroki. As well as the largest, ugliest ice skulpture you’d ever seen. It took a minute for the shock to wear off until you realized that Todoroki might have just murdered someone….
Hopefully he’d been justified in it. Hopefully it had been done to protect himself and others. Otherwise it would have been pretty difficult to explain freezing someone to death.
Speaking of freezing…
Todoroki looked like he hypothermic. You pulled off your jacket as you hurried over to him. There was ice on his body and he was breathing out an icy mist. You could see that he was trying to stay awake but everytime he blinked his eyes stayed closed longer.
Telling him not to go to sleep was pointless. Instead you worked on trying to rub some warmth into him as you wrapped him in your jacket. You looked around quickly to see the others, to see if there was anything you could see that needed immediate attention.
And there was. Kirishima looked like he’d taken a pretty hefty blow. Tsu was passed out and curled up shivering at the same time. Iida was hard to see because he was covered in armor but you spotted red on the pale skin of his forehead.
Whispering an apology to Todoroki, you untucked his shirt in the back as you kneeled on the ground in front of him and pulled off your gloves. Normally you tried to get consent before you touched anyone but you really didn’t have time for that considering that he was blinking out of consciousness every couple of seconds. You checked to make sure that nothing inside of him was broken before helping him into your coat properly as well as your gloves. They weren’t the best of fit but you had to make due with what you had. Other than the fact that Todoroki’s temperature was dangerously too low he was fine. He didn’t have any other wounds to worry about. Which meant that you needed to assess the others.
Shivering yourself from the absolute cold wafting from the frozen villain, you hurried over to the others in turn. Tsu seemed fine; she was bruised up but seemed to be mostly drowsy from the cold. You helped her move away from the icy area to recover. Kirishima had some deep muscular bruises, nothing life threatening. Iida however had hit his head pretty badly.
You sat on the ground and put your bare hands around his temple. First thing you did was support the neck before going in to heal the skull. Then it was onto the muscle and flesh before making sure that there was no inflammation in the brain. By the time you’d fixed Iida up, both Tsu and Kirishima were moving about.
“Oh man is he going to be okay?” Kirishima asked as he noticed the blood on Tenya’s forhead.
“I believe so. Right now I need to get back to focusing on Todoroki. I need you and Tsu to take Iida to meet up with everyone and wait for help to arrive. He should be okay to walk but if he gets dizzy, stop immediately.”
Though you’d healed everything you could find, head wounds were tricky beasts.
As the three of them started to move through the burnt trees, you made your way back over to Todoroki. You cursed under your breath in multiple languages as you noticed that he’d fallen asleep. This time when you went in with your quirk, you didn’t stop to apologize. You worked on keeping his heart pumping and blood running to and from his organs, including his skin. Hypothermia was a bitch.
As you worked on Todoroki, you contemplated over the fact that Class 1A must have had a quirk to attract trouble as a group. It was the only way to explain how they kept getting into more dangerous situations than most adult pro-heroes. Well other than the possibility that there was someone from within U.A that was working against them specifically. You wanted to go with the idea of cursed quirk because the other one was too depressing to think about. Of course you had to push back your own feelings about the situation as you needed to focus. Too bad he was so stubbornly unconscious at that point, his fire side would have been real helpful.
As you worked against the cold, you managed to pull him to an area that looked like it had recently been burned down. It was fractionally warmer over there compared to being beside the ice sculpture villain. You kept Todoroki in the recovery position as you kept close so share your body heat. Thankfully the island itself was at least a lot warmer than other areas so you were able to warm back up without your coat.
“Momma…”
Your heart clenched painfully at the whispered plea that came out of Todoroki’s lips. Considering that he was able to make a coherent sound you started to withdraw your tendrils and put them back into your body. You felt his hands curl into your shirt as he started to blink himself awake. Todoroki released you as he sat up slowly.
“What…?”
“You pushed yourself pretty far,” you said as you got off the ground, offering him a hand. Though judging by the fact that he stood up without your help it seemed pointless.
“Can you use the heat side of your quirk now?” You asked quietly.
Todoroki nodded.
“Not too much—“
“I know,” he said in a short, almost angry tone.
You raised your hand in the “don’t shoot” fashion. You felt a heated breeze as Shoto took off your jacket and handed it back to you. Next we’re the cloves. One of which was deliciously warm. Even as you put them on, you encased the warm hand around your colder one. Right up until Todoroki noticed what you were doing.
“You’re cold.”
Todoroki held out his left hand as he raised his body temperature right to the point that it created waves of heat in the area. He seemed to be concentrating intensely to maintain the heat and you were thankful for that. Once you’d gotten to a toast state you relaxed and pocketed the gloves, leaving the buttons of your jacket undone. Said jacket was removed on the trip back as you officially warmed up. The island’s weather was much too warm for the full winter jacket you had had on.
“Shouto!”
You laughed at the look that swept over Todoroki’s face upon hearing his father’s voice. Playfully you nudged his shoulder. The moment Endeavor got within arm reach, the youngest Todoroki was enveloped in the largest bear hug you had seen in a long time. Not that he seemed to enjoy it.
