A mysterious woman arrives in Tokyo . She has the face of an innocent, but behind her peaceful amber eyes lie dark secrets she alone knew...
"Ouch! Freakin' fox, take it easy!" Sano said, his voice taking on a whining tone. His usually smug face was contorted in what was obviously deep physical pain.
"I said don't move," Megumi said, firmly pressing hard against Sano's damaged hand, trying to clean the wounds with a piece of cloth.
Sano flinched and twisted in his seat, gritting his teeth and clenching his eyes tightly. Beads of sweat began forming on his forehead as he sucked in his breath sharply. When Megumi touched a particularly nasty wound at the back of his hand, he issued out a pained groan.
His arm twitched involuntarily, making the woman doctor sigh in exasperation. "How am I supposed to dress your wound if you keep on moving?" She said as though scolding a child.
"The least you could do is be freaking gentl-- Aargh!" Sano cried when Megumi poured a generous amount of antiseptic on the wound. "Oh Kami!" The tall, former fighter-for-hire hissed. He stole a glance at Megumi to find that she was smiling at him saucily.
"You were saying?" She asked sweetly.
He grimaced, feeling the sharp pain recede into a throbbing dull ache. Megumi began wrapping the strips of white cloth around Sano's right knuckle. Her hands were gentle but that did not mean that they were incapable of inflicting pain. Everytime Sano stiffened, her amber eyes would crease into a mocking smile. The former fighter-for-hire glared at her. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?" He said to her, a little spitefully.
A glint appeared in the amber depths but she did not reply. Instead, she scoffed as she finished with the bandages. Then, she patted the newly bandaged hand and said, "There. Good as new."
Sano took back his hand, protectively cradling it with his other, relatively undamaged left hand. "Gee, thanks," he said sardonically.
Megumi let out an irritated breath. "Well, if you hadn't been such a complete idiot and followed Ken-san to fight Shishio in Edo, then you wouldn't have been in such a mess. I mean, look at you!" She gestured at his bruised countenance, her delicate nostrils flaring slightly.
Unaffected by her display of annoyance, Sano merely gave her one of his devastating grins. "Hell, kitsune, I didn't know you worried about me," he said, deliberately misunderstanding her.
A faint blush colored the lady doctor's face before she chastised him, saying, "Kami, I don't know why I even bother when I'm just sure you're going to end up in another fight tomorrow." Then she turned around, hiding her burning face from him as she busied herself with the remaining bandages and the surgery needles. She continued to grumble under her breath as she proceeded to clean the medical equipment.
After several minutes of airing out her grievances, Megumi noticed that the tall, former fighter-for-hire was unbelievably quiet. So she turned around, intent on giving him a piece of her mind but only to find his seat empty. "Well, that's just great," she said to the empty room, feeling her irritation increase.
Sighing heavily, Megumi finished cleaning up the clinic, paying careful attention to the proper placement of all of Dr. Genzai's medical equipment. Then, when she was done, she snuffed out the pale yellow lamp that lit the room and stepped out. She closed the door behind her, looking up at the darkening sky and noticing that it was later than she had originally thought. The old doctor had asked her to close up, saying that there was some business he had to take care of. Megumi had agreed, of course, and even saw to a few more of Dr. Genzai's patients before Sanosuke came in with his broken hand.
She frowned as she made her way towards the Genzai House, her home for some months now since she first came to Tokyo. She was still smarting from her encounter with the rooster head. Ever since that day in the Kamiya Dojo when Megumi made her decision to stay, they have been fighting and bickering like a couple of brats. She refused to think why the mere sight of him irritated her so. And it seemed as though Sano shared similar feelings for he never lacked for snide remarks when he was around her. She sighed again, wondering why both of them went all out of their way to hurt each other.
"I hope that guy you're sighing over is worth it," said a voice.
Megumi nearly screamed but checked herself just in time when she saw the familiar figure of Sagara Sanosuke leaning against a roadside tree. "For Kami's sake, are you trying to frighten me half to death?" She scolded, secretly grateful that it was too dark for him to see the sudden redness that flooded her cheeks. His words had hit too close to home for comfort. Why did he still have that effect on me when I know that I hate the mere sight of him? She found herself asking.
She heard the mocking grin in his voice as he said, "Frighten you? I'd be really shocked if even Shishio could frighten you, kitsune."
Megumi snorted. "What are you doing here, toriatama?"
"Just enjoying the view," Sano replied, giving her another one of his devastating grins.
Megumi rolled her eyes before she promptly turned around and continued walking. Sano stood staring at her back for a moment, a soft look in his deep brown eyes. Then, he moved and fell into step with Megumi. "And well since I got nothing better to do, I might as well walk you home," he said to her, still with that mocking light tone. Their eyes met and a quiet understanding came between them. They both smiled.
"Toriatama no baka," Megumi murmured, her lips curved in a half-smile.
"Kitsune-onna," Sano retorted.
As they made their way to the old doctor's house, they continued to exchange light banters. To anyone hearing them, it would seem as though they were fighting. And perhaps, they were but anyone could see that there was much going on behind the easy smiles of these two young people.
** End **
Just a little something for you, guys... before I get around to writing the sequel. ^_^
Edits! My Japanese is nonexistent so you'll have to excuse my mistakes. Tomo no baka...where the hell did I get that? It's toriatama no baka, by the way. Yeesh.
