Chapter 31
You frowned and tended when you heard a particular person call out your name. Aizawa sounded one part surprised, another part furious. As you turned around you tried to remind yourself that you were supposed to be equals. Or something close to that. The tone he used really didn’t help you feel all that confident in that position.
“Yes?”
“You were supposed to be at your office, working,” Aizawa pointed out.
Behind you, you heard as Todoroki sat Todoroki down. Or maybe it was that Todoroki escaped from Todoroki. Either way the Todorokis weren’t embracing. Which just meant that they were both about to see you get dressed down for something that really wasn’t even your fault. Not a comforting thought.
“I was,” you said. “I’d recently finished with a session—“
“With who?” Aizawa asked. At least his tone didn’t sound as angry.
“A client,” you said as you pursed your lips.
Said client, Endeavor, was right behind you. With that in mind there was no way you were name dropping. Not that you would have in this situation but having him behind you only strengthened your resolve.
“I had finished up my paperwork and notes for the client when I went outside. At which point, Hawks, who was called in as backup for this situation, had me in the air on the way here. He’s insanely fast by the way. Like seriously, he probably could have been here sooner if he hadn’t picked me up. Why did no one warn me he’s like a pretty, fluffy jet?”
Though you didn’t know it, a certain winged hero was internally grinning over the compliment. The man in front of you was not as happy over your words.
“No one told you because it wasn’t important. Hawks is not part of the U.A staff and you told us that you had no relationship with him.”
“I don’t?”
“Then explain why a pro-hero you have no relationship with picked you up to take you to an active incident. You could have—“
“Take it easy Eraserhead,” Hawks said with a grin as he put a hand on the taller man’s shoulder.
If looks could kill, Hawks would have been fried chicken at that point. At least when Aizawa snapped his gorgon-like stare his way. You shifted uncomfortably as you realized that Hawks was stepping into the argument. It wasn’t his fault that Aizawa didn’t believe you were mature or experienced enough…
Though you couldn’t help but feel relieved that Aizawa’s disapproval had a new target. It wasn’t like you knew that the anger that he projected was because of something different.
“I was in the area during an investigation when I got the call,” Hawks said as Aizawa had fully turned around to face him. “Since I knew that U.A had stationed students on this island, I knew that they might need to be looked after. So I picked up the best healer U.A has on the way to help them out.”
“You intentionally picked up a civilian without a provisional hero license, much less the real thing, to bring here?” The level of disapproval in his tone made you wince for Hawks.
The winged hero took it better than you had. “The students needed her help. I wouldn’t have set her down if I thought she would have been in real danger.”
And the aura of anger and disapproval continued. You clenched your jaw as you stared at his darkly clothes back. Why was it that he was okay with 15 year olds going into the field, doing the actual fighting, but was against you doing the job you were hired to do? Especially as he’d been the one to recommend you for the job! The double standards were frustrating.
You jerked when you felt a cooler hand touch your shoulder. You looked at the younger Todoroki through blurry eyes. Oh god had you been close to crying? You gritted your teeth harder, trying to force back and swallow the emotion. You weren’t a child damn it. His (Aizawa’s) approval or disapproval in this case shouldn’t matter. Especially since you knew where he stood already. It wasn’t like anything he was saying as new or a surprise. Still…
“Thanks,” Shouto Todoroki said calmly.
“What?” You asked softly.
“I did not express my gratitude appropriately. Thank you for your help,” he repeated more formally than before.
“It’s kind of my job,” you half heartedly joked with a wavering smile. “But you’re welcome.”
Endeavor looked between you and Todoroki. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” his son said briskly.
The flame hero turned his attention towards you. To your side you could hear Aizawa and Hawks talking but couldn’t make out the words. Nor were you motivated to try. Instead you turned your back to Eraserhead so that you could look up at what was a concerned parent. His concern was kind of intense; not exactly the fearful concern most parents you’d seen projected.
“A couple minutes that way,” you pointed towards where the waterfalls were, “is the…body of a villain encased in ice so cold that it’s chilling off the immediate area. I assume Todoroki pushed himself past his current limit as even the area, which looked like it had been lit on fire at one point, was cooled down too. It’s no wonder he gave himself severe hypothermia with how cold he must have gone.”
Said Todoroki’s eyes widened fractionally. He remembered being cold of course. But then he’d woke up warm and made a foolish utterance he’d rather forget about. Easier said than done though. Ever since the sports festival earlier that year he’d remembered more and more about his early years with his mother. You’d reminded him of her for a moment. At that moment he had felt safe in a different way than normal. Now he just didn’t want to think about it. Especially not in front of his father.
“We’ll have to work on that,” Endeavor murmered.
Todoroki looked up at him and narrowed his eyes. A good majority of his thoughts wanted to reject what his father said. He knew that his old man was right though. If he wanted to beat him, Todoroki knew that he needed far more practice. As much as he hated to think about it he was nowhere near Endeavor’s level. Not yet.
You watched the tense family stare down, feeling quite awkward. After a moment you nervously interupted what was no doubt a magically yet silent conversation.
“So yes…I’m just…going to go help others now…”
In your haste to hurry off and be useful you never noticed that Aizawa broke off mid sentence to turn around when he realized you were walking off. Nor were you witness to the one of a kind talk that Endeavor and Aizawa engaged in. Calling it a talk was, of course, generous as neither were for long speeches. Instead you met up with your Recovery Girl when she was brought in to help with the students who didn’t have enough stamina left for her to safely heal them.
Like the class’s green bean and boom boy. They had been pretty tore up. While you fixed all the potential permanent damage you had left the aches and massive bruises for them to wake up to. After all, Nezu had gone on about the students needing to learn to take care and not rush in expecting there to be no consequences. You figured the pain they’d be in was a good compromise on that front.
After the heroes were taken care of, and you’d gotten down a protein shake and handful of vitamins your great aunt had provided for you, it was time to help the civilians. Most of the adults were older which was why you tried to help them first…
But I’m the end you ended up with a group of kids as the older generation wanted to help the heroes organize everything. Or at least that’s how the “leaders” of the community of old people explained away you seeing to the kids before them.
“Is brother Deku going to be okay?”
You looked at the young boy who had asked that. There were tears forming in his eyes. You smiled and squared down so that you weren’t towering over him and the girl you presumed was his sister.
“Of course,” you smiled. “I made sure that they’ll be fine. They’ll wake up with some booboos but I had to leave them so they can learn to be better heroes when they grow up.”
“They’re already heroes,” the girl said passionately. “They saved my brother and I!”
“That’s good—-“
“So don’t you say anything bad about them!”
Wow. The girl was a little firecracker. Was she like Angry Boy’s cousin or something?
“I wasn’t,” you tried to assure her. “They’re amazing. They’re so much better at fighting than I’ll ever be. I just meant that I want them to get even better than they already are. Can you imagine if they’re this good now…how amazing they’ll be at like my age? Or like at Endeavor’s age? I can’t wait to see that.”
It was true. Sometimes when you watched class 1A and 1B actually practice, you were amazed. There were more powerhouses in class 1A of course but all the students were amazing. They just had to learn other kind of things than how to be amazing with their quirks. Nezu was right about that; as much as you wanted to help them all the way you had to leave them in pain so they could grow from the experience. Plus you needed to at least try to help any civilians.
“Do you think they’ll be great heroes?” The boy asked as he clenched onto his clothes.
“I thought they already were,” you smiled back at him.
“Right,” the girl agreed with a nod of her head.
“Can…can we go see them?” The boy asked again.
“Soon. They need to sleep first. Okay?”
Both kids nodded. You moved to sit on the ground so that the next part was easier.
“Would it be okay if I checked to make sure both of you are okay now?”
“I’m okay,” the boy said instantly.
“Please? Let me check? I promise I can help with my quirk, even with things you might not feel right now.”
“My brother can heal himself,” the girl insisted. “That’s why that bad guy was after him I think. He wanted to steal my brother's quirk!”
The young boy nodded. “He looked sick. Like he was hurting himself. I think that’s why he wanted my quirk so he could feel better. But he was a villain and tried to take it instead of asking!”
You kind of froze up on the spot as you turned your eyes towards the light haired little boy. He had a quirk that let him heal himself? And there was a villain that could take that quirk?
…
You felt nauseous.
If the evidence of the fight was anything to go off of, class 1A had barely succeeded. Would they have been able to win if the villains were able to heal themselves? It was suddenly hard to breathe. Nezu, Aizawa’s and Endeavors warnings started ringing through your ears.
Aizawa was right.
Oh god.
How did someone take another persons’s quirk?! Wasn’t it supposed to be generic? What if there were more villains out there that could take quirks?
You wanted to help heroes, to help people, but if someone took your quirk…you couldn’t do that as well anymore. And the good guys would be down a healing quirk bloodline. On top of that…there’d be a villain that could heal themselves on top of who knows how many other powers.
You stood up as you suddenly went cold.
It was hard to breathe.
Fear rushed through your body with an alarming speed.
If you’d been at the battle and the villain knew you could heal too…you’d have been a liability. You could have been why all the students died.
You needed to go. You needed to get out of there right away.

It had taken you what felt like eternity before the fear had subsided and you’d been able to breathe easier. At some point you’d ended up crying though it was hard to remember when. All you knew was that your entire body felt shaky and exhausted as you cleaned your face.
You dipped in a bottle of room temperature water as you sat on the ground away from everyone. You wanted to stay out of their way; to not attract attention. There was so much for you to think about even though all you wanted to do was curl up in the safety of your bed.
Principal Nezu was right. Aizawa was right. Endeavor was right. Your Aunt was right. The Commission was right.
“Hey Chickadee, are you okay?”
You flinched as you heard Hawk’s voice. In an effort not to answer him right away, you slowly sipped on your bottle of water. Hawks frowned slightly as he took in your parlor and overall mood. Though the frown eased as he sat down beside you with an exhale.
“First time dealing with a disaster like this?”
You shook your head no. “My mother was a hero. I kind of grew up in…this…”
“So then what’s wrong?”
“…they were right,” you admitted quietly.
“About what?” He asked as he shifted on the ground, leaning on more to one side than the other.
“I’m stupid. Reckless,” you muttered. “There was a villain that could take quirks…and…”
This time Hawks frown was internalized. And it went a lot deeper.
“Who said that the villain could take quirks?”
“…the kids,” you felt silly saying that. Which didn’t help with your mood. “Not the students. There is a boy here with a quirk that lets himself heal or something. He and his sister were sure that the villain was after him so that he could take the healing quirk. Could you imagine if that…person…the one who hurt everyone…if he could heal himself too?”
Oh yes, Hawks definitely could. He’d seen it with the High End Nomu up close. It was not a prospect he was looking forward to witnessing again. It was a nightmare that he’d feared would happen again when he’d been interviewing another victim right before getting the call about Nebu Island.
“Think you could introduce me to the kids? I want to talk with them too.”
You nodded as you huddled into yourself. You clenched the water bottle closer. And you flinched when you realized that your weakness was attracting even more attention. Worse thing was that judging from the knees down, it was Aizawa. You really couldn’t handle getting lectured right now. You really didn’t want to see that expression on his face when he saw that you realized he had been right all along.
Hawks stood up and gently helped you up. Which put the teacher in front of you in even a worse mood. Not that he’d admit to it or show it on his face.
“Come on, as soon as I’m done talking with the kids I’ll make sure you get home safe and sound,” the winged hero said tucking you under one arm with a smile.
Good thing for Hawks that Aizawa didn’t have Endeavor’s quirk. The moment he tucked a wing around you protectively, Aizawa’s glare would have turned him into a bucket of fried chicken if he could have.
