Preys
Conservative epilogue
Four months later - Saturday, late morning.
“We are late!” mumbled Tokio, swallowing her cup of tea hastily, standing in front of the sink. Ouch, too hot.
“So what?” Saitoh was lying on the couch, sipping his coffee between two drags on his cigarette, more or less watching the news channel on TV, when he was not staring at her, imagining possible activities for the rest of the day. He had no intention to go anywhere.
She was wearing one of his old T-shirts; the collar was too large and tumbling low on one arm, revealing a creamy shoulder. Her hair was tied up loosely in a bun on top of her neck, some strands escaping, flowing in the wind of the fan. September was hot this year. In more than one way, he grinned inwardly.
“We cannot be BOTH late.” She turned towards him, blowing some air up with her bottom lip to chase another strand falling down her face.
“They all know, anyway,” he argued.
“Not ALL of them.”
“Sagara is a moron.”
She lit a cigarette. He didn’t seem to have decided to move, putting a hand behind his neck, with that exasperating smirk of his. He was only wearing a pair of jeans. She stared blankly at his torso for a second, glancing away as she noticed his lips twitching a bit more.
“At work we don’t show up. But if we let them think that they can talk about it….I don’t want to be the center of gossips.”
“I don’t care about people and you shouldn’t either.” He poured himself another cup of coffee. He drank a little of it, settling comfortably on the couch, watching TV again. “If they dare to comment, which I doubt strongly, they’ll lose interest once we’re married.”
She inhaled her smoke too fast and choked on it, coughing loudly.
“Excuse me? What word did you just use?”
“We’re getting married,” he repeated in a bored voice. “It’s just about filling a piece of paper. Don’t make all a fuss about it.”
“Oh, I thought you were suggesting a ceremony, white dress, tuxedo, with our families and all the police department attending, shedding tears of emotions….but of course, if it’s only a piece of paper, it’s really a detail. Probably why I don’t remember you asking me anything about it.”
He raised a mocking brow. “You want a ceremony?”
“HAJIME!” He had gotten on her last nerve.
The jingle of the 12 o’clock news rang from the TV. Oh, they were so going to be late. He didn’t want to go in the first place. He was just making her pay for that….. No, he was serious, she realized.
“You’re under my command. It’s impossible.”
“No rule says so. We’re already living together, tell me where is the difference,” he shrugged.
After she left the hospital, she didn’t stay one night at her house. They met in his apartment every night and the weekends when they were not on duty. She had more or less settled there, though she was officially looking for another place to live.
He might have a point. She couldn’t believe he was actually convincing her to….
“If there’s no difference so there’s no point into getting married.”
“It’s better,” he stated.
That made things clear. Saitoh Hajime in a nutshell: never explain, never complain, and do as I say. She decided to retaliate with a bit of sarcasm.
“I learn something about you everyday. I didn’t know that you were conservative.”
“You surprised me too. I was expecting you to run for your life,” he smirked.
“If I were that wise, I wouldn’t be here to start with.”
She sighed, leaving the kitchen to curl on the other side of the couch. He put his feet on the coffee table to make her some space.
“I’m too old to refer to you as my girlfriend. It sounds stupid.”
She gave that a thought. He wasn’t wrong. They ended up having a relationship, although they never really acknowledged the fact. Until now. Well, they didn’t need to get married for that. She could be his…Girlfriend? Yep, ludicrous. They weren’t even friends to begin with. Partner? Business-like. Life-partner? Heavy. Concubine? Theatrical. Mistress? Sordid. Lover? Oh, please…
Wife. That sounded oddly more appropriate.
She gazed at him. She loved him. He was driving her crazy but she loved him. It would be him and no other. Were things that simple?
Yes.
“Do we have a better reason than the vocabulary issue?”
“You don’t take too much space with your stuff in my bathroom.”
“This is a good one,” she mocked. “According to your sentimental state of mind, I guess I can’t hope for a ring?”
He gave her a sly grin. “Now who is conservative?”
“We *buy* a new apartment.”
He moved closer to her, to kiss her bare shoulder and the curve of her neck.
“Deal….”he murmured.
She tossed her head back, enjoying his firm lips on her skin, letting her hands wander on his chest…and she pushed him away. Unbalanced, he fell back.
She stood up, smiling wickedly. “You opened my eyes. I’m finally very conservative, so I think that we should wait until we’re married.”
She walked to the bedroom, taking off the T-shirt, conscious of his gaze on her. “I’m getting dressed for Misao’s party. I’ll call her to warn that I’ll be late.”
“More than you think. We’re stopping at the City Hall on the way,” he warned sternly.
Still he had a sheepish smile as he took a new cigarette.

Author’s notes:
Proposal, Saitoh style (^-^)
Getting married in Japan is incredibly easy. The administrative procedure (nyuuseki), consists in filling a ridiculously simple form, to sign it, and the only documents asked for are an ID, and a certificate of celibacy (or divorce/widowing). Two witnesses (over 20, only condition) have to sign, and they’re not even required an ID. The form can be filled at home, and the groom and the bride don’t even have both to go to the City Hall to register the wedding. An official isn’t needed, and the registration itself takes around 10 minutes. The big wedding bash is optional: it costs a fortune, and not everybody can afford it. Nobody seems to think that a little, cheap party is fitting for a wedding.
All this to say that the epilogue makes sense. For the documents, Saitoh was preparing his ambush, of course (^-^). He’s a very organized man, LOL.
For more “information” (LOL) on Saitoh and Tokio’s married life, you can find a one-shot lemon (NC-17): “Of love and mind games”. Several prequels and a sequel are also posted on my site. “Preys” was the first long fic that I finished and although it’s flawed, I like the plot, the structure, most of the character development…and the end *grins*.
Thanks to all those who took on their time to read and to give me positive or constructive feedback. I’m very thankful for it. *bows*
