Chapter 32
‘darkest night’
Night shrouded the castle, a veil of silence and darkness. The girl and her tears had gone, a servant with some painkiller tea had come and then gone, and now only Yue and his slave remained. He’d taken the medicine without quite waking up, and since had fallen into a drug-induced sleep that Li warned would last for hours. The captain, with shadows under his eyes and blood still smeared across his shirt, had excused himself to the next room and was now dozing against the wall like a lost refugee. It was clear enough in his eyes that he kept hoping Yue would dismiss him from this chore, but that Yue would not do. He was too terrified of his slave dying without proper care, and Li was the only servant Yue would trust to provide it. If only Touya would wake up. If he would just open his eyes then Yue would breathe easier.
Hours ticked by. Night crept into what was technically early morning, stars moved across the sky, and still Yue watched over the sleeping boy. His panic-stricken flight over the hills had tired him, but not enough to even consider sleep. He did not move, had not moved to even sit since his return to the castle, too afraid to disturb the bed.
So complete was the stillness, when Touya finally moved it came as a jolt. A brief stirring was Yue’s only warning before he shot up from the sheets with a strangled gasp, eyes wide with terror, lungs heaving for air. Yue flinched, then hurried to close the distance between himself and the bed. He looked so panicked, and bewildered, Yue ached for him.
“Toya?” he whispered. His slave was clutching at the satin sheets beneath him with tense fists, panting, but at the sound of his voice Touya’s head whipped around towards him. Yue wouldn’t have thought he could see him, in the darkness, but recognition registered in his black eyes. “Toya, it’s me. Are you in pain?”
No answer came. The panting eased off gradually and his fists relaxed, but he didn’t move and Yue didn’t dare move either. The bandages were clearly visible to Yue’s nocturnal vision, and he worried that the sudden movement might have triggered fresh bleeding.
“Toya, stay still. I want to see -”
He leaned forward, only slightly, and Touya drew back so sharply he almost fell over backward. Yue froze where he was, arm extended.
“Toya, it’s over. I will not hurt you.”
The pain and betrayal etched across his face made Yue want to curl up with shame. If he would just scream like his eyes were doing, scream every angry word that must be inside him, it would be some kind of relief. Yue could not endure this wretched silence.
“Say something, Toya,” he pleaded in a low voice. “Tell me if you are in pain.”
If Yue thought Touya looked upset before, he was mistaken. A dark fury curdled in Touya’s eyes at those words, like glittering obsidian, and his lips parted as if to finally speak. Yue braced himself, but nothing came. Touya changed his mind and clamped his jaw shut, shot one last smoldering glare in Yue’s direction, and slumped over onto the sheets again.
“Toya -”
His slave snatched the nearest loose sheet and yanked it to cover himself, including his head. He could not have silenced Yue more abruptly if he’d clapped a hand over his mouth, and this was much worse. Touya would not even look at him, did not want anything to do with him.
Alone again in his sleeping castle, Yue felt his heart break and collapsed to the floor. Oh, what had he done?
He was not the only who spent a miserable night. Sakura watched the sun rise over the eastern ridges, not bothering to lift her head from the floor of the cage when it cast its red light over her body. It was limp with exhaustion after crying herself to sleep the night before, and she hadn’t been asleep long before she woke from some nightmare that she couldn’t quite remember. The reality of her brother’s condition seeped back into her thoughts then, and a fresh onslaught of tears kept her from drifting off anymore that night. Now her face was splotchy and sensitive from her constant weeping, and she felt drained. As she’d screamed the previous evening, her brother had never been hurt so badly in his life. Onii-chan was her protector, and provider, had become almost a parent in the years since they lost their father. To see her source of strength lying in his own blood shocked Sakura to her very core, and left her shaking and scared in a world she didn’t quite know anymore. If something could hurt Onii-chan so badly, then what might happen to her?
Perhaps if she had not been left to lie in the darkness alone, after that horrifying sight, she might not have worked herself into such an emotional panic, but there was no one to so much as hold her. Li was tending to her brother upstairs, which was in itself a comfort, but that left her alone in an otherwise uncaring castle. Only her first night here had been worse.
Eventually Ralen came, all smirks but no news, to usher her to a breakfast she had no appetite for. Then down to the bathing rooms to change – usually she had her bath after returning from outside, but this morning they led her right into the water and started lathering. Clearly Li would not be able to take her outside either, and the thought was enough to make her start crying again. Cold water felt good against her face, though, and anyway she’d been emptied of all tears. Limply she went through the motions of getting dressed and groomed, and followed Ralen back to her cage. He made some nasty comment, upon closing the door, but she didn’t hear it.
So with nothing to do but agonize over the condition of her brother, Sakura settled in for a long and dreadful day. The morning was crawling by with excruciating slowness when a surprising sound fell on her ears, the sound of a voice that was both very familiar and very welcome. Startled, she jumped to her feet just before Ralen and Tomoyo rounded the corner.
“Tomoyo!”
“Hello, Sakura, good morning,” replied her friend, her manner as polished as ever. “Lovely to see you again.”
“Lovely to see you both, you mean,” Ralen put in snidely. “Together. It’s really been too long.”
Sakura hardly heard him. Tomoyo could not have chosen a day when Sakura needed her more, and she’d barely entered the cage before Sakura flew at her and almost crushed her in her embrace. A friend, thank heavens, her dearest friend had come and now she would not have to be alone. Tomoyo must have sensed her wild distress, and immediately returned her hug with a gentle squeeze. Fingers combed through her hair, and a low murmur shushed her before she could begin to cry.
“Yes, Sakura, I’m very happy to see you too. Everything’s going to be fine now.”
“You’re here so early…” Tomoyo had never come before midday, not that Sakura was at all unhappy about it.
“It’s turning out to be a very hot summer out there, you know. I left almost at dawn so I could get here before the weather became uncomfortable. Is that alright with you?”
“Oh, yes!”
Tomoyo grinned at her response, taking the time to glide her hands up Sakura’s neck and cup her face. This time, Sakura didn’t even hesitate. Desperate to feel something other than fear and anxiety, she tipped forward and brought her lips right to Tomoyo’s. Like always they were soft and sweet, the very taste an instant balm to Sakura’s nerves. Tomoyo would make her feel better now.
She could feel the other girl’s surprise through touch, a little taken aback at her boldness, but Tomoyo adapted quickly. Her muscles relaxed, she mellowed into the kiss, and with her arms she drew Sakura into a close embrace. Vaguely Sakura could hear Ralen moan, but right now she would not pay attention to him. Tomoyo’s tongue had slipped past her lips, taking control of the kiss, and Sakura was happy to surrender. Hands that always knew exactly where to touch moved down her back and began to rub it in circles.
A little hum of contentment welled out of Sakura’s throat, every touch nourishing that warm glow between her legs. Tomoyo’s lips moved from hers to her jaw, weaving a trail to her ear and closing over the lobe in a warm wetness. Eyes closed, she tilted her chin back and allowed Tomoyo to work, conscious of the little flutter in her chest whenever Tomoyo sucked especially hard. When she finished and moved her mouth lower, her tongue never left Sakura’s neck.
“You like that, don’t you?” crooned Ralen. “That’s right, keep on going.”
Tomoyo’s fingers moved nimbly to unlace Sakura’s bodice, and Sakura helped by gathering up the material of her own skirt. In a matter of seconds it was off, leaving her almost completely exposed. A soft female hand cupped her breast and rubbed her nipple, eliciting a tiny squeak from her, and upon the other breast descended Tomoyo’s tongue. The twin sensations of moisture and dexterity was enough to make her moan with delight, and without quite realizing it she began to rub herself.
“Virgin wants it bad today, doesn’t she? Get on the floor, sluts.”
Tomoyo’s grip on her waist tightened, briefly, but if she was annoyed then no sign of it crossed her face. Without quite breaking contact she guided Sakura to a kneeling position on the floor, then directed her into helping off Tomoyo’s light linen frock. As soon as it was gone they were at it again, hips and breasts rubbing against one another in a friction that could have melted Sakura right there in her cage. They kissed and licked and fondled and then Tomoyo dropped back into a sitting position, enfolding Sakura within her arms to lie flush against her chest and facing outward. Tomoyo was always so adamant about Sakura keeping her eyes closed and so she did, letting her head rest back against Tomoyo’s shoulder while hands worked off her last scrap of underclothing. She whimpered when fingers slipped inside her, but it was a whimper of pleasure. Tomoyo took her time about this task, rubbing and stroking and penetrating, drawing out cries that waxed in volume while Sakura arched her back in a mute plea to finish once and for all. How exactly Tomoyo knew to do this Sakura still didn’t quite understand, but when the moment had come she finished with a sure stroke that left Sakura trembling in the grip of pure ecstasy. Rich moisture exploded within her and she could feel it oozing down over her own and Tomoyo’s fingertips dripping in spots on the floor of her cage. A final shudder passed through her and she collapsed against Tomoyo; distantly she heard Ralen groan with a relief of his own.
“Fantastic,” he exhaled, “just fucking fantastic. Who’da thought a little torture was what it took to get her panting for more? I hope Yue whips him more often.”
Tomoyo’s hand had slapped over her eyes, just in case she tried to open them, and she thought she heard the rustle of clothing being rearranged. “I’ll be back in a little while, slaves. Don’t you dare repeat that if I’m not around.”
“You needn’t worry,” Tomoyo replied coolly. Then she heard the sound of departing footsteps, and soon Tomoyo released Sakura completely. For once she did not dive to reclaim her dress, however, and simply lay there cuddled against Tomoyo’s warmth.
“My goodness, Sakura, what’s happened? It was almost like you were desperate – your overseer said something about how you might be having a bad day today.”
“Oh, Tomoyo…” With the return of reality Sakura felt her breath hitch in her throat, and unconsciously squeezed Tomoyo’s hands. “The worst thing has happened.”
Li’s night could best be described as painful, rather than miserable. He woke up with a jerk, feeling as if he were late for something, which he was. He was missing his morning watch, but he knew better than to ask Yue for a dismissal. He was sore, too, the neck most of all, after a night of sleeping propped up against the study wall. And now bright morning light was spilling through the windows, making him squint, and he wondered how late it was. Grunting, he stumbled to his feet and stretched his arms, made a vague attempt to comb back his hair, and sidled up to Yue’s doorway. He was half-expecting Yue to be standing where he’d left him last night still, moping over his slave, so he was relieved to see him sitting in his armchair instead. He looked rather like how Li felt, and was staring vacantly into the cold darkness of his fireplace.
Li cleared his throat, the first time he could ever remember needing to alert his powerful lord to his presence. Yue did not look up, but he sensed that he’d at least noticed him.
“Morning, my lord. I’m sorry that I slept so late. Has there been any change to your slave’s condition since I last saw him?”
“Change,” Yue repeated, a little blankly.
“Yes, did he wake up?”
He could have sworn Yue flinched. After some hesitation, he nodded.
“Good. Did he speak? Say anything at all?”
“No. Nothing.”
Li might have seen the way he tensed while answering, if he’d been looking. Instead he was stepping further into the room, on his way to the bed, when his sleepy brain caught up with him and he realized that there was no slave there to examine. The bed was empty.
“Where -” He cut himself short when he turned and saw Touya outside on the balcony, sitting on the wide railing. Shit, what the hell was he thinking? He’d lost a lot of blood and could be dizzy; loitering on the edge like that was stupid and dangerous. He shouldn’t be out of bed at all, let alone outside. “Sir, you really shouldn’t have let…”
This time his voice trailed off when he caught a look at Yue’s face, and he very wisely elected not to finish that sentence. Again he cleared his throat. “Ah, it’s good to see that he’s up. I’ll just go and check on the bandages.”
The atmosphere was just as awkward out in the humid morning air. He’d seen men whipped before; his mother would have never had such a thing done to any of her servants, but other rich families in his hometown had and he’d seen what it did to even the strongest of men. Brawny workers were reduced to shells of themselves, timid, jumpy, haunted in their eyes by the severe pain and humiliation. Kinomoto, in contrast, was looking out over the valley with a calm and cool gaze. He did not so much as twitch when Li spoke.
“You shouldn’t be up there.”
“Drag me off then.”
Like he would. Li grimaced in irritation. “I need to check your bandages.”
“Why?”
“So I can see if they need changing.”
“No, why you?” Kinomoto flicked him an unwelcoming glance, and Li’s grimace deepened.
“Because Yue put me in charge of nursemaid duty, though it sure beats the hell out of me why. So would you get down so I can look?”
“No. I’m fine. Send someone up with extras and I’ll change them myself. And I’ll want some marigold extract too, if you’ve got any.”
“But Yue said -”
“I do not care what he said.”
A pause pregnant with tension followed, and a prickling on Li’s neck told him they’d been speaking too loudly. Yue could hear them, he was sure of it, and he was also sure that Kinomoto knew it. Any normal slave would be terrified of his master after such a whipping, but not this one. What the hell happened between them?
Of all the servants in the castle, Li was probably the only one who really didn’t care, just so long as he could escape this room and standing in the midst of their silent crossfire. If the slave refused to let him check his injuries, then he wasn’t going to argue about it.
He nodded and turned around, but he hadn’t put one foot over the threshold when Kinomoto spoke again.
“My sister.”
Li froze, one hand on the doorframe, heart suddenly pumping very loud in his ears. He couldn’t have heard, could he? Did he know? Did he hear every word?
“What about her?”
“Does she know?”
Know… about what? It took Li a few seconds, still frozen rigidly mid-step, to grasp that Kinomoto was talking about himself. He almost buckled with relief.
“Yeah.”
“Did she see?”
“Yeah.”
He said nothing more, and Li resumed walking. Yue said nothing when he left the room, still watching his fireplace, as if he’d never heard Touya’s flagrantly insolent words on the balcony. But he’d heard them, alright. It was the first time Li had ever seen pain in his eyes.
But none of that was his concern. All he cared about was that he was free of Yue’s room after a near day of imprisonment. Li was starving and could use a bath, and he debated whether to go and take care of both first, or drop in on Sakura to give her an update. He was so hungry his stomach nearly won, but in the end he decided to see her first. She must be beside herself with worry, and the news that Kinomoto was already out of bed would thrill her. He would just give her a quick update, then hit the kitchen.
Rapidly he descended the steps and ran lightly through the halls. It was the middle of morning and since he wasn’t outside taking her on her walk, she must be in her cage. No one else was ever around in the daytime, here in this silent corridor, and it simply didn’t occur to Li to worry that someone else might be about. He didn’t even hear the sound of low voices, or heavy breathing, didn’t suspect a thing until he rounded the corner and saw everything.
His first reaction was pure instinct – he jumped back behind the corner to hide before anyone could see him. Not that he had any reason to hide at all, not when he was the one doing nothing wrong, but he plastered himself to the wall anyway and didn’t move. Now he did hear them, could hear every breath and moan and whimper, in particular recognized Sakura’s trademark meows of pleasure. Mixed in were Ralen’s low groans, and Li felt nausea twist his empty stomach.
Heart hammering away within his chest, he peeked. No, it had not been his imagination; Sakura was naked on the floor of her cage and kissing that other girl, and the two of them were crawling all over one another as if they couldn’t get enough of it. The trainer’s lips closed over one of Sakura’s nipples and she threw back her head, her face a clear picture of delight. The breasts he’d only just brought himself to touch days before were in someone else’s hands now, Sakura’s low gasps provoked by someone else’s touch. And over all of it loomed that disgusting overseer, hand in his pants and jerking away, drinking in the scene with undisguised lust.
The trainer drew Sakura into her lap and turned her to face Ralen, hand slipping up between her legs. She squeaked and thrust her hips into the touch, pressing so intimately against the other body they were almost one. Whatever the other girl was doing, she was doing it expertly, and Sakura’s low cries began to escalate in volume and frequency. Something was coming, a climax, and her voice filled Li’s head until it had drowned out all other sound and thought. He was aroused even in spite of his jealousy, his body and mind at war, pounding blood versus horror and disgust, and he was afraid that when Sakura broke so would he. His feet moved underneath him and he fled, not even caring whether they heard him. It was just as well that everyone else at the scene was too distracted to notice. He did not stop running until he was outside the castle, and even the fresh air brought no relief. In the privacy behind the stables, however, his hand did. It was the only time he ever brought himself to completion and promptly threw up afterwards.
In the bathroom, Touya was changing his bandages. It must have been difficult, but he was using two mirrors to see what he was doing and seemed to be managing just fine. Yue knew he’d never done anything like this before, but Touya’s fingers were swift and sure as he tied the knots in each new linen strip. Ever the fast learner, his slave, unfailingly brilliant at whatever he tried. Why did he have to be so stupid and break into Clow’s tower?
“Toya, you should not have to do that yourself. You should not have sent away that servant.”
No reply. Not even a disgusted glance, or a narrowing of the eyes. It was as if Touya couldn’t even hear him.
“Let me help.” Tentatively Yue approached and placed a gentle hand on Touya’s shoulder. Very gentle, so his slave would know he was not in danger, that Yue was only trying to help. It was the first time he’d tried to touch him since Touya got out of bed, and Touya’s reaction could not have been worse.
He did nothing. Not even to jerk away or flinch, as he so often did when he first arrived at this castle. Without breaking his rhythm he continued wrapping his torso in another bandage; he didn’t even bother to look up. Sharp pain stabbed through Yue’s heart, and his hand slipped off Touya’s shoulder. He could have forced it, of course, he was much stronger than Touya and he could have held him down to see to his injuries however he liked. But that was not really what Yue wanted.
“I never meant to hurt you so badly.”
Wrap, tie, cinch. Touya didn’t pause.
“You should not have gone up there. You should not have touched his things. It was wrong and when I saw you I just became so angry… I forgot myself for a little while. I hadn’t intended to go so far.”
Still nothing.
“Toya, won’t you speak to me? I want to know that you understand.”
Yue wanted to scream into the silence, but held himself back with his last shred of self-control. What did the boy want? An apology? A master did not apologize for whipping his slave, whether it was deserved or not, and certainly Touya had deserved punishment. He would not apologize to his property.
“Carry on then. But you are still mine, and you will sleep in my bed tonight. You know I can make you.”
Yue turned and left before his voice could crack, as it was dangerously close to doing. It wasn’t going to help, he knew, but what other way was there? Yue missed his Toya, and he would have him back.
“Oh my. What a horrible experience that must have been.”
“It was awful. I don’t know how many times Master Yue whipped him, but it must have been a lot because there were bandages wrapped all over his back. He didn’t even wake up when I screamed so loudly. Poor Onii-chan.”
Tomoyo clasped her hand and squeezed it comfortingly, a welcome gesture. Lying sprawled on the cool cotton sheets, the two of them formed a near perfect circle with only their hands to link them. Cuddling was nice, but even inside it was too warm for that.
“And you have no idea what he did to push Yue into such a terrible punishment?”
“None at all. I know they’ve often fought – you should have seen the way Onii-chan was yelling at Yue after he found out about my dance lessons. But Master Yue didn’t seem to mind it at all; I thought it was because he really liked my brother. He was so sad, one night, when they had a terrible fight and he thought Onii-chan was angry with him.”
“How does your brother feel about him?”
“I think – well, I used to think – that he loves Yue too.”
“Love?” Tomoyo repeated, obviously surprised. “Really?”
“Is it very unusual for a slave to fall in love with his master?”
“I have heard of it… but I wouldn’t have expected it from someone like your brother. He seemed so proud when we met. He didn’t seem the type who could accept imprisonment and slavery.”
“He isn’t, and he hates it. But I accidentally caught them kissing once, and- oh, Tomoyo. If only you could have seen it. They both looked so swept away, like they were the only two in the world. When I saw that I realized it must be what love looks like.”
“Maybe so, but surely that’s over now. Your brother must have done something awful to Yue for that whipping, and now Yue’s done something awful to him. That’s not a simple thing to recover from.”
“You’re probably right.” Sakura slumped against the sheets, wishing the past day of the castle could just undo itself. Everything was going so well, they were all happy. Why did those two have to wreck it?
Tomoyo squeezed her hand again. “Let’s talk about something more cheerful. How are things with your… gentleman friend?”
Sakura’s smile picked up again. “Syaoran is so wonderful, thank the heavens for him. If it hadn’t been for him Onii-chan could have died; I begged him to go and stop Master Yue and he did. He’s even been taking care of his wounds, and I know he doesn’t like Onii-chan very much. He did it because I asked him to. He says he loves me!”
“That’s wonderful, Sakura.” Tomoyo smiled, but she couldn’t quite hide the caution in her eyes.
“I know you’re still a little worried about what could happen, but everything’s been fine so far. We’re very careful not to touch unless we’re out of sight, and he only comes to my cage if it’s really necessary. Nobody suspects anything.”
“I hope you’re right.”
“I’m sure of it! And it’s worth the risk; I don’t think I could live in this castle if I didn’t have Syaoran. He’s strong, and kind, and keeps me safe from Ralen. I know I can depend on him for anything.”
“I’m very happy for you,” Tomoyo assured her. “Especially since your brother and master can’t be relied upon to be sensible.”
“Isn’t that the truth?”
Because she wanted to avoid riding in the intense midday heat, Tomoyo spent most of the afternoon with Sakura. She couldn’t have been happier to have the company, even though most of the day they only talked about trivial things like dresses and brushed one another’s hair. Just having someone there made a world of difference, and she was sad to see her go.
“I’ll be back when I can, Sakura, like always.” Tomoyo blew her a light kiss and the leering Ralen led her away; by the time he’d returned it was time to take her to dinner. Something about the way she’d performed that morning had Ralen positively antsy with delight, and so the entire walk from the cage to the tea room was a barrage of suggestive comments that made her cheeks turn red and want to cover her ears. He was probably intending to sit with her while she ate, as he usually did when Onii-chan wasn’t with her, and it was an experience Sakura was dreading. So when Ralen opened the door and her brother looked up, she almost fell over.
“Onii-chan!”
“Hi,” he replied noncommittally, as if there was nothing unusual in him sitting there on the sofa like he did every night. Ralen’s jaw hung open.
“What are you doing here?”
“Eating dinner. What are you doing here, instead of closing the door and walking away?”
Ralen tensed, but something in her brother’s frosty glance had him backing away without another word. He shut the door and left the two of them alone, and when Sakura finally recovered from her surprise she almost flew at him.
“Onii-chan, I can’t believe you came! You were hurt so badly and I didn’t even know you’d woken up, and here you are!” She stopped herself just short of an enthusiastic hug, remembering those injuries on his back, and settled on cozying up to his chest. He was wearing his shirt almost completely unbuttoned, perhaps to keep it loose, and she could plainly see that he’d pulled it on over all his bandaging. Otherwise he looked perfectly healthy.
“Stop fussing. I’m fine.”
“Onii-chan, you looked really bad last night. I was so worried.”
“This isn’t last night, and now I’m fine. Eat your dinner, it’ll get cold.”
He shrugged her off and picked up his fork, nonchalant as she’d ever seen him. Sakura stared.
“Onii-chan…”
“You’re still not eating.”
“Aren’t you very angry, for what Master Yue did to you?”
He didn’t answer, busy chewing and swallowing some spinach. When it became clear he wasn’t ever going to answer, she tried another tack.
“Well, why was he so angry at you? What did you do that made him so mad?”
No reply. Sakura bit her lip, starting to feel a little frustrated. She’d been so worried all last night, and all today, couldn’t he at least answer a simple question?
“Onii-chan, I’m your little sister. And we promised we wouldn’t keep things from one another anymore…” Her voice faltered some, when she remember how much she was keeping secret from him, but resolutely she kept on. “Can’t you just tell me one little thing?”
“No.”
“A hint?”
“No.”
“Onii-chan!”
“Eat your dinner, Sakura.” He turned, and pinned Sakura to her cushion with a gaze so steely she almost trembled. He wasn’t angry at her, but he was angry. Never in her life had she seen such a dangerous look in his eyes. “Don’t ask me about it anymore. It isn’t your fight.”
This time, she listened.
If Yue thought he would have to drag Touya into his bed and tie him there, he was quite wrong. When the boy returned from dinner with his sister, he ignored Yue sitting by the fire and went to the wardrobe where his clothing was kept. Without a word he changed into the soft drawstring pants he usually wore to bed, went into the bathroom to wash his face, and crawled underneath the sheets on his side of the bed. With no sex and no reading time the evening seemed skewed somehow, leaving Yue with nothing to do, and it felt strange simply sitting here and watching the firelight.
He put it out with a snap of his fingers, and the room darkened enough to see the stars outside. It was another warm night, the breeze blowing in from the open balcony window, and with an ache Yue remembered their massage lessons. That too had been a very warm night, the body heat of his slave pressing against him while amateur hands worked across his back.
“Toya,” he murmured, settling himself on the bed. He was lying on his side, facing away, and of course did not answer. Delicately Yue placed a hand on his arm and got the same reaction as last time: nothing. This time he tugged a little, and pulled Touya over onto his back. Instantly Touya winced, arching his tender back up off the sheets, and Yue cringed when he realized what he’d done. He’d only wanted Touya to face him, but he’d forgotten about the injuries. Hastily he let go, and Touya rolled back onto his side. Not so much as a recriminating glare for his pain did he give.
Yue could do nothing else but lie down next to him and try to sleep, though that would not come for a long time. He put an arm over Touya’s waist, but it was like embracing a block of wood. Touya had indeed learned the worst way to hurt him.
Tired and ready for sleep, Sakura was just lying down for the night when she heard footsteps and sat back up again. She was afraid it might be Ralen, back for more teasing, but relaxed when Li’s face became visible in the moonlight.
“Syaoran! Thank goodness, it feels like it’s been such a long time since I saw you. You didn’t have to come and tell me that Onii-chan’s alright though, I saw him at dinner. You must be so tired.”
She jumped to her feet with a smile that he did not return. Hands in his pockets, he came to a stop well outside arms reach of her cage. Something didn’t seem quite right on his face – he looked almost ill.
“Syaoran?”
“Is it just her?” he muttered. “Or are you doing every girl in the castle? Does he always watch?”
“What?”
“Just how many have you kissed, anyway? You put up an incredible act with that modesty of yours, it’s amazing. No one would ever guess you’ve been all the way down and back on a girl’s body, the way you blush.”
Sakura swallowed, unexpectedly stung by his harsh words. “What are you talking about?”
“I saw, Sakura! I came to see you this morning and I saw all of you, screwing with that city girl while blondie treated himself. How could you?”
She paled when she saw the anger and revulsion flash in his eyes, suddenly feeling very small.
“Th-that was Tomoyo, the girl who trained me. She’s my best friend, but Ralen won’t let her in to talk to me unless we do that. He makes me do it!”
“Funny, you looked like you were enjoying yourself alright.”
“It’s because I was so upset,” she tried to explain, willing back tears. “I was so scared about what happened to Onii-chan and I was so relieved to see Tomoyo, I just got -”
“Naked. With her. And while blondie was watching. You’re supposed to be my girl now!”
“It wasn’t cheating, Syaoran.” The tears slipped out of the corners of her eyes, out of her control. “I didn’t feel – she’s just my friend. It’s not at all like when I’m with you.”
“How long?”
“What?”
“How long have you been doing that?”
“When we met in the city…”
“You’ve done it since we first kissed?”
“Yes,” she whispered. The disgusted betrayal in his voice made her want to die.
“Whore.”
She didn’t know what the word meant, but it came like a slap in the face anyway. The look in his eyes needed no explanation.
“Please, Syaoran, he makes me do it just to talk to her -”
“You let me think I was the only one.”
“No, I -”
“You cheated on me!”
“I didn’t want to, I had to -”
“Had to? You had to? Don’t you know what you sound like? You’re someone’s sex toy! And I won’t be with that kind of girl. My family has higher standards than that.”
It was as if someone had stabbed her in the chest. The one man that she thought she could rely on was turning on his heels, striding away, and she could feel herself sinking into panic.
“Syaoran, no! You- you’re the only man I’ve ever kissed! I love you!”
“This is over.”
He disappeared, and she was trapped without chance of following. In desperation she cried out his name, over and over, but the only reply was the cruel echo of her own voice in an empty corridor. Her knees gave out and she collapsed on the floor of her cage, feeling as if her heart was being ripped apart. When the sobs came, they tore from her chest in hot, painful spasms.
It was the second night in a row she cried herself to sleep.
Feeling very out of place in the sunny clearing, Yue trembled before Touya’s wicked smile. The chain leashing him clinked and swayed as Touya played idly with the links.
“Oh, Yue, Yue. What have you done?”
“It was unintentional. I didn’t mean for it to go so far.”
“You think that makes it better or something? You think you can say that and I’ll forgive you?”
“Who said I was asking for your forgiveness?” Yue tried to draw himself up to his imposing height, but that never worked here. Touya’s eyes seemed to cut him right back down again.
“One day and you already miss me, don’t you? You miss my hands, and my body, and my mouth, but I don’t miss you. I can go on sleeping next to you in your bed forever and never touch you once. You need me but I don’t need you.”
“That’s a lie,” Yue protested, a little desperately. Touya sauntered closer, still wearing that malicious grin, and lazily poked him in the chest. It seemed such a light touch but it was strong enough to knock him flat on his back, a painful collision with the earth. In the next second Touya was on him, pinning his wrists to the grass and laughing when Yue tried to squirm free.
“You made a terrible mistake, Yue. You forgot that I am the master, and you are the slave. You worship the ground I walk on. One kiss on your lips and you’re in heaven. And you thought you were in a place to be punishing me? How conceited. How stupid. You’ve destroyed what little I felt for you, and there’s no way you’re getting it back.”
“That can’t be true,” Yue denied, his chest hot with panic. “It can’t be gone forever.”
“Oh but it can and is. You’ll never have me again.”
“Stop! You’re lying!”
“Poor little Yue.”
“Shut up!”
“Poor, sad, lonely Yue…”

Disclaimer: I do not own these characters
It’s no one’s fault this time, it’s just May and that time of the year when a lot of stuff gets crunched together. I substitute teach for a living, and though I frequently take off days so I can write, I really needed to pack in as many days as possible to ensure I’ll have money for the summer vacation. The little brats almost killed me, too. I’m surprised I was able to write anything at all. Once school is out, though, I hope to be updating a lot faster.
I think I have to give it to Tina Rina this time, because she made me laugh so hard (even though I know she didn’t mean to make me laugh, because it was sad) when she provided Yue’s inner stream of thoughts while watching Touya lie comatose on the bed. Poor Yue indeed! I guess we’ve all made mistakes like that, though hopefully not resulting in so much blood.
So, y’all hate Li or what?
