winterfrau: *adjusts her saddle* Glad I'm back too. I was kinda apprehensive about writing these two at first, but it's grown on me. I really must write more for them. I will, I promise. Thanks for the sympathy, it's kind. And it sounds better than me repeating condolences :P
Min: i'm glad I could make your week by doing something I love as well! Here's the next chapter. Hope you like it. Thanks for the sympathy!
Thanks to everyone who replied with hugs and condolences and general love. It's amazing what those words can do. It's a lot better than hearing stupid things like "crying won't bring them back". You guys are great and I sprinkle you with my love! *sprinkles* I'm feeling a lot better. (on vacation this week- that prolly helps). I have a new myspace page devoted to Alex. Well, me as an authoress too I suppose. I've posted a pic of Aurora, and I'm working on the sketches for Rius and Cen too. Enjoy!

Chapter 28: Our Last Days
Abel woke as the hairs on the back of his neck stood on end. He opened his eyes slowly, letting them adjust to the weak light of early dawn. He couldn’t hear anything unusual, but his skin was prickling as though someone was watching him. It hit him then that he could no longer hear Alex’s breathing. Throwing caution aside, he sat up, his gaze sweeping the room. He started as his gaze fell on the silhouette of crouched figure at the far end of the bed. He listened intently until a pair of eyes flashed in the darkness.
“Alexandra?” Abel waited for a few tense and silent seconds.
“Yes, Abel.” Her voice was soft and dark. It made him think of crushed velvet.
“What’s the matter?”
“Nothing with me, though I seem to have given you a start.”
“I couldn’t hear your breathing. I got worried.”
“Mm.” Alexandra left it at that. Abel watched her figure stretch as she crawled toward him like a jungle cat stalking prey. He settled back against his pillow, pulling back the sheets in invitation. She joined him, curling into his chest. They were quiet for several minutes, each lost in their own thoughts.
“What’s bothering you, Alex?”
“Hmm? Oh, nothing.”
“Alexandra.” His tone was gently reproachful and she looked up into his face through the darkness.
“Abel, I know I’ve been saying this for ten years, and I must sound like a broken record by now, but I swear to you, Cain is coming.”
“I have always believed you, dearest.” Abel nuzzled into her raven locks and inhaled deeply, squeezing her tightly. “We will be ready for him, Alex. We will take him head on and we will defeat him.”
“I am worried for my children.”
“We will protect them. They’re going back to stay with Seth. There’s no safer place in the world for them.”
“I’m worried that we have already wasted too much time.”
“Relax, love. We’ll wake them in a few hours and put a call in to Seth. There’s no point in waking everyone now.”
“I know...” Alexandra trailed off, sounding far from reassured. Abel knew words fell short in situations like these. He opened his mind to her, enveloping her in a warm wave of love. Alex gasped and smiled, small tears slowly gathering in the corners of her eyes.
“Is my love so shocking, Alexandra?” Abel cursed himself inwardly for ever having hurt her, for giving her reason to doubt him.
“No, Abel. It is so deep that I feel I could fall into it and drown.”
“What a morbid way to say such a beautiful thing.” Abel gave her cheek a kiss and Alex laughed outright at his teasing.
“I didn’t mean to be morbid.”
“You weren’t. It was quite the poetic image.”
“I wasn’t trying to be that either.” Alex settled back against his chest as Abel retreated from her mind to a less overwhelming distance. Abel began to knead Alex’s tensed back muscles.
"You’re still tense, still worried.” Abel kissed her temple reassuringly and Alex took a shuddering breath.
“I’m worried I will not survive.”
“What?” Abel pulled away from her, putting her at arms’ length. Alex’s face was immediately painted with fear and an even deeper shade of worry and Abel pulled her back against his chest, positively crushing her. “What kind of thing is that to say? Of course you’ll survive the battle. I will protect you. Cain will not take you from me again.”
Alex could hear and feel his panic, though his words were confident. She realized then, that her fears were not entirely unfounded and that she may never see her family again. She sighed softly, her fingers tracing Abel’s chest. She wanted nothing more than to mold with him, to become one being that they might never be separated again. Alex decided to do the next best thing. Ghosting her fingers over his abdomen, Alex locked Abel in a warm heady kiss, shuddering as his hands came up to grip her upper arms.
“Alex?” Abel’s brows were knitted in confusion. A moment before she’d been worried and frightened, but now she was advancing on him unmistakably.
“Yes, love.” Alex sighed softly, breathing warmly over Abel’s throat as she wrapped her slender fingers around his lengthening sex. Abel groaned quietly, nipping her shoulder.
“Are you sure you’re up to this?”
“Absolutely.”
“We can save it for another time, Alex, a time when you’re feeling up to it.”
“Shut up and kiss me.” Alex sat up and straddled him, kissing his chin invitingly. Abel needed no further prompting and began to peel her t-shirt and panties off, kissing her fiercely. Alex helped him wiggle out of his pants, straddling his waist once more. She sat there, staring at him in the growing light, tracing the contours of his face with her eyes.
“What is it, Alexandra?”
“I just don’t want to forget this moment.” Abel reached up to cup her cheek, pulling her down against his chest. She looked into his eyes as he kissed her tenderly and her breath hitched in her throat.
“Alex.” Abel’s voice was quiet, filled with worry, but she covered his chest in kisses, taking her time to reassure him for once. He knew in his heart of hearts that she was treating this as their final days together, and he wished he could convince her that it wasn’t so.
“It never hurts to lock in a memory, does it? Let it go, Abel.”
“I love you, Alexandra. You know that, don’t you?”
“Of course I know it, silly man. Why else would you put up with my bullshit for forty years?” Alex smiled at him as she slid down his body. He watched as she slid onto his straining sex, her folds amazingly warm and slick. She brushed her legs down his until they were lying beside his, the position pressing her hips firmly into his. He looked up at her with a quizzical expression and she smiled.
“You really should take the time to read, Abel.” She smiled and pulled off his length, sliding back into place slowly. Abel sighed appreciatively, gripping her trim waist as she continued to move against him. He traced his fingers up her spine, mesmerized by the arching of her back as she whimpered. He carded his fingers into the hair at the nape of her neck, gripping it gently.
“You’re amazing, Alex.”
“Mmm. You like this way then?”
“The position doesn’t matter, so long as I’m with you.” He pulled her forward for another kiss and she tightened involuntarily on his length. Abel groaned in the back of his throat, throbbing within her heat. Her slow movements were quickly stoking a passionate fire in his blood and he wanted nothing more than to stay with her like this for eternity. Abel ran his hands along her body, listening intently to the lovely gasps and whimpers she emitted whenever he found a sensitive spot. Alex kept her movement steady, covering his chest in gentle kisses, nipping Abel as he gripped her throat.
“Abel.” Alex’s face flushed and she braced her hands against his chest, pushing herself up. Abel gripped her hips and began moving with her, thrusting deeper as the flush spread down her throat and over her chest. The two fell silent as they climbed toward their ascent. Alex’s gasp was the only indication of her bliss and Abel tumbled over the edge with her, biting his lip. Alex sat still against him until her arms began to shake with the effort of holding herself up. Abel pulled her down against his chest, rolling them onto their sides. He held her close, kissing along her hair line as her heartbeat calmed. Alex traced patterns over his chest idly, immediately lost in her thoughts.
“Alexandra, what can I do to comfort you?” Abel’s eyes were sparkling in the growing light, his features painted with a quiet desperation.
“You comfort me by being near.”
“You are still bothered.”
“I’m just trying to burn it all into my memory. I don’t want to forget these moments.”
“Alexandra.” Abel’s voice was quiet, not completely convinced.
“Shh.” Alex nuzzled into his neck, sinking her fangs into his smooth skin. Abel sighed contentedly and crushed her against his chest. Alex only drank for a moment, pulling back to doze against Abel. They watched the sun spill through the crack in the drapes, finally lighting the room in soft gold tones.
“Mother is awake.” Alex’s tone was matter-of-fact as she played with a lock of Abel’s hair. He shifted to look at her and she caught the look of disbelief in his eyes. “What?”
“How do you know that?”
“I can hear it. Can’t you?”
“Well, I suppose if I tried...” Abel trailed off, a smile breaking his features. “I suppose my attention was held by something far more interesting.”
“Pfft.” Alex couldn’t help but smile at his teasing. She continued to listen as Abel trailed tender kisses down her neck. “Mother has sent Tres to retrieve us. We should get up and get dressed.”
Abel groaned and Alex poked him in the ribs, laughing as he flung himself onto his back with all the drama of a child’s tantrum. He lay there, pouting beautifully.
“Oh stop it! It’s not that early. At least the sun is up.”
“Yeah, and we’ve been up too or have you already forgotten?” Abel reached to fondle a breast and she swatted his hand away.
“I have not forgotten. It seems like we have an unbreakable pattern of making love in the morning.”
“You know how to cure that don’t you?”
“No, how’s that?”
“Make love all day long.” Abel moved to grab her, but Alex squealed and leapt out of his grip, heading for the bathroom. Abel chuckled, moving to follow her. They showered and dressed quickly, Abel emerging from the bathroom just in time to hear Tres knocking on the door.
“Good morning, Abel.”
“Morning, Tres.” Abel was beaming and Tres considered him for a moment, a smile slowly spreading over his features.
“I take it My Lady is doing better this morning than she was last night?”
“Much.” Abel winked at Tres. He turned around to lead the android into the room and as he turned, a sopping wet towel collided with his face.
“Ack!” Abel spun around, finally managing to rip the offending cloth from his face. “What the hell?”
“Don’t think I didn’t catch that wink.” Alex cast him a challenging look, another damp towel dangling from her finger.
“Why, whatever do you mean, dearest?” Abel’s voice rose to that tooth-grating pitch that he always adopted when he was put in awkward situations and both Tres and Alex groaned, turning away from him. “What?”
“I was only teasing, Abel, relax.”
Abel turned toward Tres, grinning victoriously, mouthing, “I’m that good” behind Alex’s back. The android smirked, swallowing his chuckle, lest he cause anymore friction between the couple.
“Just because you’re good doesn’t mean you have to flaunt it, Abel.” Abel’s eyes rounded and he turned around to check that Alex was out of ear shot.
“How does she do that?” Abel was still looking around the corner, verifying that she was out of sight. Tres laughed outright.
“She’s a mom. They just know.”
