”Hey, this is actually very good! It’s different, but good,” Sano tried to speak with a mouthful of food as he filled it with a sample from each dish set out before them.
“Hey Sano, leave some for us!” Kenshin chuckled.
Saitou washed his mouthful down with some sake, “My compliments to the chef, this is indeed, very flavorful.”
“It’s a recipe Aoshi wanted me to try for the longest time and I’m glad we finally found some time for him to teach it to me. There were a few tricks to adding the ingredients, but I think I will master it in no time,” Kenshin boasted.
“Hmn, a recipe we used to make while on travel. It is easy to prepare and can be done quickly. What makes it special is the mixture of imported spices that compliments the natural spices that is already in the original recipe. That brings out its unique flavor. You would not think it is a travel meal, but rather a dish that one had taken time and energy to prepare,” Aoshi proudly explained.
“Well whatever it is, I can eat the whole pot!” Sano placed his third serving into his empty bowl. “As a matter of fact I...”
Aoshi cut Sano off in mid sentence by gesturing to the men to be silent. Kenshin and Saitou are both aware that someone was lurking outside. Aoshi was the first up on his feet and dashed quickly into the far room to investigate. Kenshin and Saitou headed for the room of the alcove that faced the back of the house and Sano headed for the kitchen at the front house.
Finding that the alcove is undisturbed and secure, Saitou and Kenshin headed for the front of the house. Sano had only his fists for weapons and would be at a disadvantage if their lurker should turn out to be a shinobi. After what happened to Saitou earlier today, it would not be an odd occurrence that Saitou was being tracked.
It started to rain steadily outside tottering from a mild drizzle, to a downpour and back; the evening darkness came prematurely due to the additional covering of the stormy sky.
“On the porch,” Sano called to Saitou and Kenshin.
Lightening struck, lighting up the surrounding area and heavy rain broke forth which was expected to happen earlier, but it seemed the weather waited, for this.
Aoshi held a small man dressed in black by his arms. The man’s head was covered by a shinobi hood, and all was visible were his eyes. Aoshi secured the man’s arms and rendered the man immobile while Saitou stepped forward and stripped the hood off the man’s head.
“Hmm, you do not look familiar, but then, none of you shinobi ever do. Tell us who you are and why you are poking around here,” Saitou demanded. He took a handful of the man’s hair atop the shinobi’s head and jerked his neck back to look into the man’s eyes. “Who the hell sent you here?”
The man ignored Saitou’s question.
“Hmm, stubborn I see.” Saitou pulled a cigarette out from his pouch and lit the tip. “Perhaps a little coaxing will help you remember who sent you.” Saitou took a deep drag off his smoke and slowly exhaled while standing directly in front of the restrained man. Saitou lowered his hot cigarette down to the man’s crotch and lightly touched the glowing tip to the man’s gi.
“I don’t think there is any need for this,” Kenshin spoke up on the stranger’s behalf.
“You are right Himura,” Saitou snapped at the redhead. “There maybe no need for this but it is absolutely necessary to find out why this scum is here. Someone tailed me earlier today and tried to kill me! That, is good enough reason for it to be necessary to get to the bottom of this.”
As Saitou talked the smoke from the man’s gi increased.
The man squirmed and then shouted! “Itai!!! Stop!!!”
“Then tell me, why you are here and who sent you?!” Saitou demanded with a firmer voice than before. Saitou placed the cigarette between his lips and grit his teeth upon it. He took a step toward the man and placed his palm against the man’s groin, cupped his testicles and then squeezed. “We can stand here as long as it takes to find out the answers to what I just asked to know.” Saitou applied more pressure against the man’s vulnerable sacks.
Sano was speechless as he viewed what was taking place in front of him. Saitou and Aoshi were handling the man, as if they had done this many times before. With mixed emotions, Sano looked on as Saitou held the stranger’s testicles in his hand and took in the sight of both Saitou and Aoshi’s enjoyment, as the two toyed with the man’s fear and concern for his life.
Saitou squeezed and blew smoke into the man’s flaring nostrils. “Let us know when you are ready to talk and I’ll release this grip of mine.”
The pain was beginning to become obvious on the man’s face as the man bit his lower lip to keep from screaming out in agony.
“Let me tie him to the post here,” Aoshi said. "I will then strip off his garment so that we both can work on him at the same time. It will be faster that way.”
“Oro?” Kenshin responded to Aoshi’s suggestion in a questioning tone. Kenshin glanced over to Sano who was standing next to him looking dumbfounded as he took in the scene.
Saitou applied more pressure to the man’s testicles.
“Alright!!!! Stop!” The man yelled in agony, “Stop!”
“You better be quick about it, it does feel like you’re about to pop right between my fingers.” Saitou said adding even more pressure.
The man broke down and began to sob uncontrollably… Pleading. “One of our men escaped to inform our boss that it was you… the Tokyo Police that ransacked Sugimura’s Compound. We would have thought Horie was up to it if it weren’t for our informant.
“So ka...” Saitou released the man and stepped back. He took another drag off his cigarette and then look over at the dumbfounded Sano, and realized that his mate had never watched him at work before. Saitou turned back to the man still in Aoshi’s restraining arms.
“You are not one of Horie’s? That is very well, my cover is still intact as far as Horie is concerned. Most importantly, Sugimura knows that it was the police that penetrated his compound, and not Horie’s group.”
Saitou walked over to the trembling man once again and took the man’s face in his hand. “So, all that is left for me to do, is make sure both Horie and Sugimura’s ties are severed, so that Sugimura will not let on to Horie that I am in connection with the police.” Saitou snickered and said, "We'll just let Horie keep thinking that Sugimura wants them out of the way. All we have to do is sit back and let the two battle this out between them and kill each other off."
Saitou took a drag from his cigarette and barked at the man this time, “Tell me where Sugimura is!”
“I cannot do that,” the now hysterical man cried out and pleaded for his life. “They will surely find out and then my life will end.”
“Then I shall save them the bother,” Saitou said, and flicked his cigarette off to the side.
Without another word, Saitou turned to face the man once again, grasped the man’s head between his two hands, and with a sudden jerk to the side, snapped the head at the base of the skull. The blank look on the man’s face announced imminent death as his body went limp below, and muscles fought against one another to hold onto the remaining life that lingered during his last bit of his consciousness.
Saitou turned his attention to Aoshi. “You know what to do, my driver is out front. Pick a location near Horie’s storefront and plant the body, then notify the police that a body had been discovered. It is pertinent that Sugimura believes that Horie’s responsible in order to throw Sugimura off the police scent and invite Horie to eliminate Sugimura for us."
“Ahhh I see, two birds with one stone? I have a feeling this is just the beginning, but there is no other way,” Kenshin stepped forward to take hold of the dead man’s legs. “I will accompany Aoshi.”
A look of surprise crossed Aoshi’s face as he lifted the dead man by the shoulders. “Kenshin-kun, you do not have to get involved in this matter.”
“If you are involved Aoshi, then that means that I am as well,” Kenshin replied with his squinty-eyed smile.
“Huh?” Sano finally picked up on what the three men present already know. “Hey! You mean? Wow! Aoshi… Kenshin… Hell, that explains the scream we heard earlier!”
“Ahou,” Saitou shook his head.
“Oro?” It was then Kenshin’s turn to blush.
“Himura, let us hurry,” Aoshi began his trek to the front gate. “It doesn’t look like this storm will let up either.”
The two men left Saitou and Sano standing on the main house front porch.
Saitou and Sano silently watched the rain from the porch. The sound of the raindrops atop the roof and ground was like a soothing balm after the violent scene that had just taken place at the very spot they are standing. Sano moved closer to his male partner and draped his arm across Saitou’s shoulder. Saitou was quick to respond and pulled Sano by the waist closer to his side.
“I’ve never taken a life before,” Sano spoke solemnly in a low tone. “I don’t know what that feels like, so I’m not sure what to say to you.”
“I was younger than you, nineteen, when I was forced to slay a man. That one incident caused my life to change. I lost my youth and was disowned by my family. That was when I took to the wilds and never looked back.” Saitou looked into Sano’s eyes, “It is a life I don’t want you to have to live. The kind of life I’ve dedicated my own life to free Japan from. And if I can keep you from it, I will.”
“Shit Saitou…” Sano placed a small but firm kiss upon the wolf's cheek. “You must love me to be saying stuff like this.”
Saitou glanced at Sano from the corner of his eyes. “And what if I do indeed love you, Ahou?”
“Then I’ll love you back.”
Saitou nodded approvingly, “Hmn”.

“This place is huge! I see you have so many rooms to fill, but of course, you won’t have a problem doing that, will you?” Cho struggled to unpack some of Mitsu’s collectables. “All this stuff looks imported, don’t you have any interest in our own country?”
She laughed outright this time. No longer hiding her pretty mouth behind her tiny feminine fingers, but Mitsu felt very comfortable with Cho now. “You mean Japan?”
“Yes, you do remember Japan, don’t you? It’s where we both live and breathe and spend all our waking hours.”
“Ahhh yes Cho-san, I do have a lot of interest in our country, but I am fascinated with items from far away lands. I want to learn all I can about other cultures. I don’t understand why we Japanese are content taking such a low position on bended knees close to the ground.” Mitsu’s eyes glazed over and she flayed her arms out on either side of her. “I believe we should be exalted, because of who we are and be proud of our culture. It’s time to get up from the floor and live like the others do.”
“My god woman! Do you really believe all of that western talk?”
Mitsu approached Cho and pointed with her index to his chest. “Tell me, what is it that you believe in?”
Cho glanced down at Mitsu’s fingertip as she trailed it down the indentation between his chest plates. He wet his lips to speak.
“I’ll tell you what I believe in lil’lady.” Cho gently placed his hands atop Mitsu’s shoulders and lowered his voice to speak soft and gently to her. “I believe in Love, with a capital ‘L’. The reason I believe in this is because I know that love can make even the darkness bright, the lonely delighted, and if it’s strong enough, it can make miracles happen.” Cho lifted her chin with his finger. “Who is to care where they are, or what predicament they’re in, when they are in love? Love makes things right, even when everything is wrong.”
Mitsu searched Cho’s eyes with her own. “Do you think it is possible for us Cho-san? Can we find such a love that would see us through our present circumstance? With Horie’s possessiveness, he will never let me go. How can love be possible for two people like us?”
“If you are serious about love, and true to your own heart, you’ll find that there is no other way you can be happy. Not with Horie, or with a hundred places like this filled to the roof with stuff from far away countries. What good is it all without love?”
Tears fell from Mitsu’s eyes and rolled down her cheek. “Cho-san, I have never felt this way, not the way I feel with you right now.”
Cho was at loss for words. He could barely believe what he was hearing from the beautiful woman. Cho wasn't sure if she was just toying with his emotions, so to turn him into her personal toy, that she could play with when Horie was away. But those tears… they must mean something.
“Well I have to be honest with you,” Cho pulled the tears away from her cheeks with his thumbs as he cradled her face in his strong hands. “I’ve never felt this way for any woman before. This feeling is mighty strong and set apart from all the times I felt like I was in love.” Cho took a deep breath. “I’m not sure what to do with this, and I probably won’t know until I’m sure about your feelings for me.”
Cho’s entire being wanted to pull Mitsu into his arms and kiss her. But he didn't want to place her in jeopardy. If Horie was to ever find out that they had such a conversation… Cho dropped his hands from the woman’s face and took a step back from her.
“Okay little lady, just tell me what to do with these boxes and I’ll see to it that this area is cleared, so I can set up the furniture the way you wish.”
His words were empty. All he could think of was holding her close to feel her body against his. Cho was fully aware that this was more than a lustful attraction. He’s felt lust before, many times, but these feelings seem to well up from his very core. It will be a serious task to keep the feelings secured inside himself, and not have them surface for her to see.
“Cho-san?”
Cho looked over to the tiny fragile woman he just released from his arms. “Yes, my lady?” Cho bowed.
Mitsu lunged toward Cho as if she was about to faint. She fell into his arms in expectation of him catching her before she hit the ground. Cho caught her and kept her knees from buckling beneath her. She wept.
“Hey, hey, lil’lady, it can’t be all that bad,” Cho nervously tried to calm her sorrow. Cho’s nervousness was slowly being replaced with compassion for the sad woman, and he held her tightly in his arms. “Such sad tears from a beautiful woman. How is this possible?”
“Gomen nasai Cho-san, but what you just said about love…it is so beautiful and it reminded me of how unhappy I am.”
Cho’s head began to swim in disbelief. How was it possible for Cho to deny his feelings, his desires to hold on to the woman that he had fallen for? His heart raced and he was aware that Mitsu was able to hear each maddening beat as she pressed her ear against his chest between the open partition of his gi. His desire increased when he realized her tiny hand making its way to his already stretched fundoshi beneath his gi. He gasped.
“We can’t do this,” Cho let the words escape from his lips, even though he wanted what was already in progress to take its natural course.
“I find comfort in this way Cho-san,” Mitsu tried to persuade the reluctant southern man from Kyoto. “Allow me to touch you, just a little.”
“Buddha please have mercy on this man here!” Cho sipped a long breath between his teeth as her hand slid seductively down the front of his gi bottom and found Cho’s bundle tucked snuggly within his fundoshi. He shuddered, and his body outwardly quaked in response to her fingers as they skillfully manipulated the overly sensitive crown of his manhood beneath so many layers of fabric and his own foreskin that prevented flesh upon flesh contact. Nonetheless, her touch sent pulsating pleasure throughout his body that urged him to surrender himself to her, but….
“NO!” Cho took a hold of her tiny wrist in order to regain a level state of sanity. “Gomen nasai my dear lady, but we can’t do this! Damn it, as much as my body craves you, my feelings and concern for you is standing in the way.” Cho took Mitsu in his hands by her shoulders and pushed her from him. “We are already at risk here, dabbling with what doesn’t belong to us…You belong to Horie, and I will not cause you harm by giving in to my own desires.”
“But Cho-san, it is my desire as well. I’m afraid that Mitsu has fallen for you.”
Panic rolled through Cho’s mind and clouded his thinking processes. Although it was Cho’s dream becoming reality right at that very moment, the obstacles that were strung out before such a love as theirs, seem utterly impossible. Even if they were to run away together, Horie would find them, and place some unthinkable punishment upon them.
“My dear lady, we must think about this. We need time to think! We need to…”
Before Cho was able to make an issue he found her lips pressing down on his own in an instant. It happened too quickly to resist and it was too sweet to deny. Cho took her in his arms and returned the kiss. Such a deep kiss it was indeed. So deep that the two were unaware of the figure standing directly behind them near the doorway to the room.
“It does appear that I have arrived at a wrong time?” The unexpected low voice of the intruder startles the couple from their embrace.

Mochi Hana slipped into the back alley behind Horie’s storefront. The police, done with their investigation, had already left the scene where the body was found earlier. She overheard the officers describe it as a swordless murder, probably drug related. That was enough to spike Mochi Hana’s interest.
“It was not any of our men, nor Horie’s” Mochi Hana whispered her thoughts to herself. “Could it be…Sugimura’s man? If so, what would he be doing here near Horie’s, and dead on top of that? Hmmm, it doesn’t add up now, does it?”
Careful not to slip due to the heavy drizzle of the oncoming storm, she climbed up the side of the building with the assist of her shinobi cat rope, then scanned the area above the buildings. Her senses set off a warning that alarmed the deep part within that kept her from being at ease with the situation. Quickly she set off to skim the rooftops, one after another with the speed of a surefooted dear in the forest, yet she did so crouched low enough, like a tiger on the hunt, so not to be noticed by anyone on the roadways below.
Upon reaching her destination Mochi Hana scaled the fence and dropped down low into a garden on the other side of the wall, just outside the Tokyo city limits. “Humph, this garden… still gives me the creeps,” she whispered yet again to herself and dashed past the little koi pond. She tucked herself under the deck of the house through the eves, just big enough for her to quietly squeeze through. She heard the voices of men and move toward the sound. She was careful not to end up directly under the men gathered, just incase another shinobi was among them. If there were any shinobi present she would undoubtedly be sensed and truly be in trouble. She eased herself close to the ground until she was able to make out what the men are saying. She listened.
“So it was Sugimura’s man that was killed today behind Horie’s storefront! Huh? These men think Horie is responsible! This only means war between the two organizations. They must believe that we were responsible for the death of everyone here the other day instead of realizing that it was the police who wiped out this mansion. I just happen along to deliver Sugimura’s opium when the police were here probably trying to make it look like Horie was behind the attack.” Mochi Hana whispered to herself as she tried to figure out the disturbing feeling she had about the whole situation. “It is beginning to make sense now. I must let our guys know that Sugimura is positioning his men for battle.”
Mochi Hana, much the wiser due to her shinobi work, quietly backed out of the low crawl space between the floor and the ground outside. She was glad that the sun was setting on the horizon and she wasn't able to see those creepy-crawlers she hated so much while having to do this type of work. She didn't mind having to deal with thugs and brutes, but insects and snakes were another story. Through the garden and back over the wall, she landed on her feet outside the compound and headed back to Horie’s storefront knowing that Serizawa will be dropping Horie by there first, before going home. She would be able to speak with both of them together, if she waited there.

“Thanks for spending the night here with me,” Sano said as he moved his body closer to the wolf laying on his back with his arms folded under his head as a makeshift pillow.
“It’s not likely the carriage will be back anytime soon. I sent Shinomori out with an agenda, and being that Kenshin went with him to assist, they’ll not be in a hurry to return.”
“Then, I guess it’s just you and me here in this little dojo dorm room, under the futon covers, while the storm rages on outside, huh?” Sano said trying his best to be seductive.
Saitou smirked, “I do not recall seeing anyone else at the dojo tonight, except for one, but he’s now dead.”
“Oh yeah...” Sano sighed the words past his lips, tainted with a tone of regret. “It didn’t seem real to me, watching you and Aoshi in action earlier.”
“It is just what we do Sanosuke.”
“Yeah, I know that, but… Knowing you like this, being able to touch and feel this side of you, I keep forgetting how dangerous you are.” Sano moved closer and set his arm around Saitou’s chest and pressed his entire length of his body up against the wolf’s side. “When I think about it, I remember how it used to be between you and I before we ever got together intimately. You scared the shit out of me, but I didn’t want to show it. Hell, I wanted to rid myself of that fear by fighting you. I thought if I faced you, I’d rid myself of all my fears.”
Saitou shook his head and chuckled. “Such a lame thing to think about, indeed.”
“Yeah, yeah… go on and razz me about it. I have to agree with you, mainly because I didn’t want to face the truth.”
“Which was?” Saitou turned his head toward Sano and noticed the serious expression Sano was wearing.
Sano fidgeted a bit, feeling a little embarrassed as he confessed the deeper parts of himself to Saitou. “The truth of the matter was the fact that I admired you an awful lot, and I envied your position. Sure a lot of people didn’t think the best of the Shinsengumi, but you didn’t stop there. You’re a big time war hero too! I don’t know how the hell you made it through those battles, but then, it all adds to whom you are.”
It surprised Saitou at Sano's openness about such feelings, for up until now, there was little mention about Sano’s true feelings about the past and their relationship before they became lovers.
“A man does what he must when his country calls upon him to assist. I have not done differently than other men who had the same calling Sanosuke. I honored my country, even if the price to bring honor was death, I was willing to pay the ultimate price to ensure Japan’s existence.”
“When I first met you and realized who you were, I knew I wanted to be like you, yet I was afraid to admit how much I admired you. That was the fear I was feeling at the time. You stirred these weird feelings inside of me that I’d never felt before. All I knew was... Well, I just wanted to be close to you.” Sano chuckled.
“That explains why I couldn’t get rid of you in Kyoto.”
Sano blushed, “Well yeah, I had those feelings even before I joined you in Kyoto. In fact, those feelings motivated me to find you and fix my arrest so that I’d be at the police station when you arrived.”
“Ahou,” Saitou huffed and shook his head as he recalled the image of Sano sitting on the jail’s floor looking up at him with those big brown eyes. Yes, even then, it stirred feelings within Saitou that he could not explain back then, as well. Those feelings haunted him until he gave in to them that night in his garden.
“This evening when I saw you and Aoshi working on that shinobi, it brought back the feelings I had before I got to know you the way I do right here and now. That part of you, the dangerous part I don’t understand. It is so hard for me to believe you have a deathly cold part that enables you to kill on a whim one minute, and then be so warm with me the next. Today, you killed two men, yet you lay here with me, so calm and detached from it all.”
Saitou was not able to explain any of it to Sano. He knew that it was not something Sano would be able to grasp, nor would he be able to understand all the detailed emotions that go along with slaying people. Taking a life was a personal experience, impossible to share with words, and usually kept hidden within, to be expressed in other forms, perhaps in the form of passion?
“Sanosuke, I am the same as I was back in the Shinsengumi and even before that. ” Saitou got up to prop himself on his elbow to look down on the young man’s face and body that laid next to him. “I am he who had decided to love someone like you, and disregard what others may say against my decision to do so.”
“Saitou…” Sano breathed the wolf’s name as he reached out and pulled the wolf close to him until their lips knitted as one. In that instant a lightening bolt clapped and the bright light snapped a picture of Saitou’s face with his eyes half closed as he shared the intimate kiss with Sano. It was as though the lightening etched a still photo onto the reverse side of Sano’s eyelids which was indeed a sensual treat for Sano’s eyes while he felt the tongue of the one whose image was inscribed by the lightening onto his sight. “Saitou…”
“Sometimes death releases passion Sanosuke. Death has a way of making us realize that life should be lived passionately, as I am doing so right now, with you.” Saitou leaned over Sano and nudged the young man’s legs apart with his knee. It pleased Saitou to feel Sano willingness to have Saitou above him. Yes, Saitou felt Sano’s efforts to get Saitou’s body above his own, to feel the wolf’s weight against his frontal flesh.
“Saitou?”
“Hmn?”
“Thanks for sharing your collected passion with me.”
Saitou lifted himself from the young man below him and smiled. One of those rare full smiles Sano hardly ever got to see. This time Sano understood why Saitou hardly shared this part of himself with just anyone. Sano understood that it was reserved for him… Saitou’s chosen.
