Takeru scanned over the body of the kid as he walked out of the shadows. His dark clothing was made all the darker with the yellow trim. The kid turned and faced Takeru, “I must admit you’ve have a lot of nerve sneaking into the base of the most powerful being in the digital world.” The kid with the cape gave off an unsettling laugh.
Takeru gave a short growl in response. He then started to laugh.
The caped child’s cool snapped, “What’s so funny?”
“Let me ask you something Ichijouji, Don’t you think it’s time to give up on this little charade. It’s getting old.” Takeru watched with glee as Ken tensed up. “You say you’re the most powerful being in the digital world. And yet you have no idea about the powers that are here. You’re a pretender. You’re like that story the emperor’s new clothes.”
Ken gave a growl of rage. Even through his sun glasses Takeru could see him squint. Ken began to shout, “You’re Nobody! Not like me! You will bow down before me.”
Takeru gave a smirk, “Sorry the floor is kind of dirty.”
Ken didn’t bother to contain his anger anymore. “You will listen to me!” he shouted as he pulled the whip from his side. He sent the tip streaking through the air. It collided with the side of Takeru’s face with a sickening crack. But Takeru remained standing. In fact he didn’t flinch at all. As the whip fell to the floor Ken let out a gasp.
Takeru reached up and felt where the whip at collided furiously with his cheek. He glanced down at his fingers, and saw that they soaked in the warm crimson of blood. He gave another smirk as he talked, “when you can’t think of anything to say, do you always resort to fighting?”
Ken was taken aback, all he was able to stammer out was, “I guess.”
Takeru looked up from his bloody hand, and in an eerily calm voice replied, “That’s your problem. You don’t know when to talk and when to fight. Now’s a good time to talk.”
Ken tensed up.
“On the other hand.” Takeru gave Ken a smile. “It’s also a good time to fight!”
Ken’s mouth dropped open as Takeru leapt forward, his fist leading the way. It collided with Ken’s face with enough force to knock him down. Ken lay motionless on the floor. Takeru climbed on top of Ken and stared pummeling the defenseless Ken. A quiet voice in Takeru’s mind told him to stop, but the louder voice was telling him that beating Ken into a bloody pulp was the only way to end the suffering and pain that was surrounding them. So he continued to pummel Ken, ignoring everything else but the soft feeling of Ken’s face against his own boney knuckles.
Just as Takeru was about to deliver another punch, the building they were in shook. This gave Ken the opportunity he needed to free himself. Ken quickly scrambled over to his whip. A menacing grin grew on his face as he spun himself around and flung the whip towards Takeru once more. This time the whip landed in Takeru’s open hand, which quickly closed around it.
“Hey!” Was all Ken was able to say before Takeru sailed through the air and tackled Ken to the floor. Takeru’s hands went for Ken’s neck, however before he was able to reach it Ken’s hands grabbed a hold of his arms. Takeru growled as he was denied yet another opportunity to finish Ken.
Takeru awoke. His forehead was covered in sweat, his stomach felt like it was in a knot, and he had a strong urge to pummel something. He rolled over and saw his brother lying next to him. His hair was seemingly glowing in the rays of the morning sun. Takeru felt his emotions settle down slightly as he stared at the perfect face that laid a few mere inches away from him. Takeru knew all he needed to do to calm himself fully was awaken his brother, fore it was in his embrace that Takeru could easily find comfort. However, this time Takeru didn’t awaken his brother. The memories of the night before flashed into his head. His brother had his own issues to deal with.
The weekend came to an end quicker than either brother cared for. And the following week dragged by with lectures, quizzes, planning, studying, nightmares, sleepless nights, reflections and regrets. By the time Friday night had rolled around, both brothers were exhausted.
Takeru’s cell phone rang as he walked out of Mrs. Sato’s apartment. The call was from his brother. “Just got out of Mrs. Sato’s, I’m on my way.”
“Actually Takeru… this weekend won’t really work. I have a lot of homework that needs to get done and I need to meet with the band about a new gig. Sorry. But I promise I’ll come see you during the week, we’ll go get dinner or something.” Yamato said on the other end.
“It’s ok Yamato. I’ve got…homework too.” Takeru said with a sigh.
“See you in a few days then Teeks. Love you.” Yamato said.
“Love you too Onii-chan.” Takeru said as he hung up the phone. He let out a sigh and then called up his Plan B.
Takeru walked into the movie theater and looked around. He saw the person he looked for and made his way over to her. She gave him a smile. “Glad you made it here before the previews started.”
“Geez Hikari, you act like the previews are better than the movie.” Takeru responded. He glanced around. “What, no popcorn?”
Hikari smiled, “Iori and Ken are getting it.”
Takeru didn’t smile back, “What?”
“I hope it’s okay that I invited them. Iori and I were helping each other with homework when you called, so I invited him. Then I figured Ken would be hurt since he would be the only one left out.” Hikari explained.
“Well…that makes sense.” Takeru grumbled.
“Is something wrong?” Hikari asked.
Takeru gently shook his head. “No it’s…fine.”
Hikari gave Takeru a look. A look that told him that she knew something was bugging him.
“Takeru, I’m glad you made it.” Iori said cheerfully. “I was worried you’d be late.”
Takeru gave his younger friend a smile. “Nope, I made it.”
“I’m more surprised that Ken made it. I’m sure he is swamped with homework and studying right now.” Hikari said.
“I’ll admit, I was rather surprised when you called me inviting me to the movies. And that fact that it coincided with a natural break in my studies was rather improbable.” Ken responded. “By the way Takeru how is your studying going?”
“Oh…my studies…” Takeru mumbled as he looked at Ken. He didn’t look anything like the Ken in his nightmare. This Ken looked so much nicer and had a gentler voice, and softer eyes. The complete opposite of the villain in his dreams. “My dad has me studying with Mrs. Sato. She lives in my building.”
“Poor Takeru. I remember when Yamato would call up Taichi every night to complain about her.” Hikari said.
As the lights began to dim Iori piped up, “Quit now, the movie is starting.”
“Oh Takeru, I almost forgot. I picked up some liquorice for you.” Ken said. He then pulled the long red strip of candy from a box of snacks and tossed it towards Takeru.
The memories of his nightmares flashed into his brain. And suddenly Takeru could see the Ken setting by him as the vicious Ken of his dreams. Just as he had snatched the whip from the air in his dreams, so did Takeru with the candy whip as well.
Once the movie ended the audience began to file out of the theater. Once they were outside, the group of friends found a spot on the sidewalk to talk. “That movie was great! I think it’s my new favorite.” Hikari exclaimed.
“I don’t know. It all seemed rather pointless to me.” Iori said.
“I have to agree with Hikari. That movie was great, if only for the cinematography alone.” Ken explained. He turned to Takeru who seemed to be staring at him. It began to unsettle Ken before he simply shrugged the feeling off, “What about you Takeru, what do you think?”
Takeru stared at Ken a moment longer before answering with a smile. “While I admit everything looked great, the acting in it could have been a lot better. And Iori is right; it did seem rather pointless by the second half of the movie.”
The conversation continued, and while Takeru tried to lose himself in the conversation he always found himself comparing the real Ken to his evil dream doppelganger.
The weekend passed and a new week began. As the nights came and went, Takeru’s dreams became more vivid. Often he would awaken and find that his cheek hurt and his knuckles were sore. But as the vividness of the dreams increased, once again Takeru found that the amount of sleep he got decreased.
It wasn’t until Tuesday night came along that Takeru thought he could receive some relief. However just as soon as he opened the door that night he knew it wouldn’t come so easily.
“You haven’t been sleeping have you?” Yamato asked before he was even fully in the apartment.
Takeru stood there, amazed that his brother would notice it immediately.
“Are Dad and Mrs. Sato running you ragged? I know college is import Takeru but your own health and sanity matter more.” Yamato said. He then gave his brother a kiss.
Takeru nodded, “I know, I just don’t want to disappoint anyone.” Takeru said. While it was true that Mrs. Sato had been stepping up the workload, it wasn’t true that it was keeping him up at night.
“Well come on. I’ll make us dinner. I’m sure Dad will be glad to have something to eat besides tv dinners.” Yamato said as he headed to the kitchen.
Takeru laughed and followed his older brother to the kitchen.
That night was the only night that week that Takeru received any comfort. The other nights Takeru slept restlessly without being in the comforting embrace of his brother. Wednesday gave Takeru only a couple hours of rest before his dreams kept him from returning to sleep. He laid awake the rest of the night thinking about the newly painted image of Ken that was in his mind.
Takeru had just gotten in from school on Thursday and was gathering his supplies to study with Mrs. Sato when the phone started to ring. He looked at the number and saw that it belonged to Ken. Takeru ignored it and continued to ready his things. However soon Takeru’s cell phone began to ring, it was also Ken. Takeru snapped open his cellphone, “HELLO?”
Ken let out a small gasp at Takeru’s tone, “Oh…Takeru?”
“This is him.” Takeru answered.
“I…well…I was hoping that we could all get together again soon and go to the movies.” Ken explained.
“I don’t know Ken. I’m busy! I don’t have time to go to the movies. I’m not so smart that I don’t have to study. In fact I have to go study now. Bye.” Takeru then hung up. Once he had hung up however Takeru continued to look at the cellphone. Was that really him who just said all that? If so, why had he snapped all of a sudden? Why had he acted like a complete jerk to his friend? Was it due to his lack of sleep or was it the due to the dreams he had been having?
In the late afternoon on Friday Takeru sat on a park bench, far away from the other park goers. He rubbed his eyes, they had been sore and watery all day. His eyes burned with all the held back tears. He hadn’t slept much the night before, or for the whole week in that matter. After snapping at Ken on the phone the night before he had went to Mrs. Sato’s. After an hour of futile studying she had sent him home as his mind seemed elsewhere. This time away from Mrs. Sato was actually worse than spending it with her, as it just gave him more time to dwell on the issue of Ken without any other distractions. The thoughts about how cruel he was to his friend, and how this dream was slowly ruining his life stayed on his mind no matter what he tried.
“Takeru, I’m here.” Called out Hikari as she jogged up to her. “You said you needed to…” she stopped when she saw Takeru’s red eyes. She sat down next to him and put her arms around him. “What’s the matter Takeru?”
Takeru sniffled. “My dreams are getting worse. They’re always so dark and depressing but this…”
“Your dreams?” Hikari asked. Thoughts of her own dark dreams five years earlier sent a shiver down her spine. The only reason she was able to rid herself of their chilling grasp was Takeru. It was time to return the favor.
“They used to be just dark. They may have felt real, like something that had actually happened, but they were so unbelievable because they were filled with angels and demons, so I was able to write them off as simple dreams. But recently they’ve taken on a more realistic stand point. It’s no longer angels and demons fighting. It’s about some person spreading fear and hate, waging war, torturing and imprisoning innocents. It all leaves me with a sick feeling in my stomach every night…but what makes it so terrible is that it’s not just a stranger…. I think it’s Ken.”
Hikari blinked. “Ken?”
Takeru looked at Hikari. He saw something that made him pause.
“Hikari? Something wrong?”
Hikari snapped out of her blank stare. “No. It’s just…no it’s nothing.”
“Why do they keep getting worse?” Takeru asked, “Why Ken? Why do these dreams make him so dark? It’s never anyone else. Why do they make me fight my own friend? I wake up and I just feel this strong hatred. I know I shouldn’t feel that way over a dream, but I do. I don’t like the way theses dreams make me feel.”
“Have you told your brother that you’re having these dreams?” Hikari asked.
Takeru shook his head, “No, I’ve troubled him enough with these dreams. Besides, he’s been too busy to talk to.”
“While I think not telling your brother was a bad idea. Voicing it to someone at all was actually a good one.”
“But that’s not all, the dreams are affecting my life. Yesterday Ken called wanting us to go to another movie soon.” Takeru said.
Hikari raised an eyebrow, “How it that worse? That sounds like a good thing.”
“You didn’t let me finish. I snapped at him, Hikari. I was rude and hurtful. I would like to say that it was just because of my lack of sleep that I snapped at him. But I know it’s those dreams. Those dreams have made me see Ken as some monster. And while I know they are just dreams, they somehow have made me angry with Ken.”
“Oh…” Was all Hikari said.
“I know I should call and apologize but every time I go to pick up the phone, that same rage over comes me and I know if I called him I would only yell at him some more.” Takeru let out a couple drops of tears. “What if my dreams switch to someone else. To Iori, or you, or even Yamato? I don’t know what I would do if I suddenly hated the rest of my friends. It’s killing me enough with Ken. What should I do Hikari?”
Hikari gave Takeru another hug. “I’ll talk to Ken and try and explain what’s going on. He’s very understanding, so I’m sure we can straighten it all out. But also, I’m sure that staying the weekend at your brother’s is just what you need. You sleep better when he is around. So you can catch up on your sleep. Just promise me you’ll tell your brother. He’s been worried about you since he saw that you weren’t getting any sleep.”
“Thanks Hikari. I don’t know what I would do without you.” Takeru said.
Hikari gave him another hug and a kiss on the cheek, “Take care of yourself Takeru. I worry about you too.”
