Aster woke in her bedroom at the House of the Sun, reveling in the fact that her world was once more complete. Everyone had returned safely. The Dark Millennium’s attacks on their world had been stopped, albeit at a price that she wished they did not have to pay.
Two days had passed since everyone had returned. She had not wanted Michiru or Takagi out of her sight for any length of time. She was paranoid that if she allowed them to leave her, she wouldn’t get them back, this time.
She carefully slipped out of bed, and readjusted the covers so that no one would take a chill. She padded into the bathroom to take a shower, and came out dressed to find Takagi standing outside.
“You didn’t think you could leave without me noticing, did you?” he asked in a whisper.
She smiled at him, and wrapped her warm, damp arms around him.
“Take a shower,” she whispered to him. “Joben and I will be making breakfast at Chiba House.”
“What about Michiru?” he whispered back.
Aster gestured to the bed. In the time that Takagi had been out of it, Haruka and Sean had moved closer to Michiru, and they both had their arms wrapped around her. She was tucked under Sean’s chin, and Haruka’s face was pressed into the back of her neck.
“She’s not going anywhere,” Aster whispered. “Come down when you’re ready.” She picked up her clean clothes, set out the night before. As she started getting dressed, she heard Takagi walk into the bathroom and close the door.
She went across the yard and into the solarium at Chiba House. Vincent was at the exit into the house, talking to Joben in whispered tones. The way the two of them were leaning towards one another left no doubt in Aster’s mind that when Joben wasn’t in her bed, he was in Vincent’s with Sakura and Lucinda.
She waited until they finished talking, and then she came the rest of the way to where they stood. She smiled at both of them, and kissed them both good morning before the three of them headed into the house to make breakfast.
When they got into the kitchen, they were all startled to see Thomas sitting at the kitchen table, waiting for them.
“Joben an’ I’ll make breakfast, honey,” Vincent said. “It looks like you got some talkin’ to do.”
Aster made a pot of tea and put the pot and two cups on a tray. She beckoned to Thomas, and the two of them padded out of the kitchen, through the living room, and into the solarium.
Aster chose a pair of chairs and a small table in the early morning sunlight, and she poured tea for both of them. She took a few sips of hers while she waited for Thomas to tell her why he was awake at such an early hour.
“I’ve been doing some thinking,” Thomas said. “I can’t describe how I felt, the last few weeks, thinking that I’d never see Hotaru again. I felt like there was this hole in my heart … “
“ … that would never stop bleeding,” Aster finished for him. “I know, Thomas. I lived with it, too. I live with it every day. What have you decided?”
“I want to marry Hotaru,” he said. “I checked on the Internet. If Haruka and Michiru will give their consent, I can marry her. I know that I’m still in school, and that I might never have a lot of money, but do you think they’ll agree?”
“Thomas … Tsuki, you’re family,” Aster said. “I think that as far as they’re concerned, you two were married the day you met. If you want to make it formal, then I’ll do everything I can to make it so. After breakfast, you talk to Haruka and Michiru. I’ll get ChibiUsa to distract Hotaru. When they’ve given their consent, I’ll take you downtown and we’ll get her a ring.”
“Thank you, Aster,” Thomas said, throwing his arms around her. “I don’t know why I ever thought you could be a bad person.”
~*~*~*~*~
Thomas looked, wide-eyed, at the displays of rings in the jewelry store. He looked at Aster, and then back to the rings.
“What should I choose?” he asked.
“Well,” Aster said. “Hotaru likes purple. She also doesn’t like anything terribly flashy. So, let’s settle on a brushed finish for the band, and then let’s pick a purple stone.” She beckoned the saleswoman over to them.
“I want to see violet diamonds,” she said quietly.
“Violet diamonds are quite costly, Miss,” the woman replied. A cleared throat from behind her made her turn. The store owner was standing behind her.
“I will handle this,” he said, glaring at her. “Fushida-san can have anything she wishes, even if we have to custom order it.”
“All I said was … Fushida?” the woman stared at Aster with wide eyes. “My apologies, Fushida-san. I was completely unaware … “
“Never make assumptions,” Aster said. “I believe that I would rather deal with the owner.”
The woman ducked her head and left Aster alone with the store owner.
“My friend and I wanted to see the violet diamonds,” Aster said. “I’m helping him with a ring to ask the woman he loves to marry him.”
“Wonderful!” the man said, beaming. He bustled off, and returned with a covered tray containing purple stones nestled on white cushioning, in many shapes and sizes.
“Now,” he said. “Round shapes are traditional in the Western world, and this kind of ring is a Western tradition. However, we have some marquis cuts with very good coloring, and two emerald cuts that are absolutely lovely.”
Aster and Thomas looked over the stones, but even though the owner’s estimation of the stones was correct, none of them were what he was looking for.
“We need something darker,” Aster said. “He wants something to match her eyes.”
“She has violet eyes?” the owner asked. “How lovely. Unfortunately, diamonds do not tend to be that dark. There are some other stones, though, that have darker coloring. Jade is traditional for brides, and it comes in many colors. Amethysts can be nearly plum colored.”
“I’d like the darkest purple stone you have,” Thomas said softly, still gazing at the diamonds.
“I have a flawless amethyst that is very dark,” the man said. He bustled off with the diamonds and returned with another tray, this one filled with dark purple stones that glittered in the light.
“I think we’d like this emerald cut,” Aster said, indicating one stone that would not be oversized on Hotaru’s hand. “Put a small emerald cut diamond on each side.”
“Excellent choice, Fushida-san,” the man said, bowing to her. “Setting the stones will take approximately two hours. Would you care to wait, or to come back?”
“We’ll come back,” Aster said, pulling out her credit card and handing it to him.
He took the card away and brought it back with an itemized receipt. Aster signed the receipt and then beckoned Thomas to leave with her.
***** *****
Aster jumped out of the Ferrari at the House of the Sun before Tori had the engine completely shut down.
She raced to the front of the house just as two emergency medical technicians brought out a rolling stretcher with Michiru strapped to it. Her hands were covered with bloody bandages, her face was bruised, and her hair was matted with blood. She did not seem to be conscious. Haruka was following, her face wet with tears, and blood smeared on her cheek.
“Go with her!” Aster told Haruka. “I’ll be by later!” She watched Haruka follow the men to the waiting ambulance, and then she went into the house.
In the house, two police officers were taking a statement from a bedraggled Takagi. Sean was next to him, just as bedraggled. Both of them had bruised knuckles, as though they had been in a fight. Lucinda was bandaging Sean’s hands.
“What is going on?” Aster asked. “Why does Michiru look like she’s been beaten? What happened here?” She looked around, surveying the wreck of her house. Shoji screens were torn, furniture overturned or broken, and there was the torn remains of one of Michiru’s favorite dresses on the floor, with bloodstains on it.
As Aster turned, she saw two more police officers, standing over a man in handcuffs, kneeling on the floor.
Her fourth cousin, Takagi’s brother, Katayama.
“What did you do?” she demanded of him, as she began striding towards him. He was covered in bruises, and his face was marred with two sets of scratches. He glared up at Aster, and then he sneered at her.
“It seems that this man, here,” one of the police officers said tactfully. “Decided that he wanted to … spend time with the young woman that was here, and he did not wish to take ‘no’ for an answer.”
Aster’s face turned white and she took half a step back as the implication of his words sank in.
“You … beast!” she hissed. “You ought to be drawn and quartered! You should be skinned alive! We ought to bury you up to your neck in the ground, and saw your head off with a bamboo saw!” She clenched her fists, shaking with rage.
“I take it that you wish to file charges, Fushida-san?” he asked.
“Yes,” Aster said quietly. “I am also going to place to phone calls to Osaka. In case no one has told you, this is my fourth cousin, Fushida Katayama. He is the brother of my fiancé, Fushida Takagi. I want him arrested, and I want to charge him with trespassing, breaking and entering, assault, and rape. Katayama, your father is not going to be able to get you out of this one!”
She turned to the phone and picked it up. While Katayama was being pulled to his feet and guided out of the house, she dialed a number and then waited until it was answered.
“Fushida Satoshi, please,” she told the receptionist. “Tell him it’s Fushida Aster, and its about his oldest son.”
While she waited, she turned to Tori, who was looking at the whole scene in astonishment.
“Tori,” she said. “Call Washino from where he’s watching Usagi and the girls and tell him they all need to get back right away. I know they’re having fun at Disneyland, but we need them here. After that, call Mr. and Mrs. Black in Nagasaki and tell them that they’re going to have to cut their honeymoon short. Tell them they can have the last of the four weeks later. We need them here.”
She turned back to the phone.
“Oji-san Satoshi?” she said. “It’s Aster. You need to come to Tokyo, and you need to be prepared to do some major reparation. Your bone-headed firstborn raped my mekake!” She slammed the phone down, and then she took a few deep breaths as tears made their way down her cheeks.
After some time, she was reaching for the phone when it rang. She put it on speaker, hoping that it was not Satoshi, asking if this was a joke.
“Aster, it’s Hosyu,” her uncle’s voice came out of the speaker. “What is going on? Satoshi just called me and accused you of a tasteless practical joke.”
“It’s no joke, Oji-san Hosyu,” Aster said. “The police just took Katayama out of here. My house is in ruins, and Michiru is on the way to the hospital.”
“Michiru?” he asked. “Your artist mistress, the one with the aqua hair?”
“Yes, Oji-san,” Aster said tiredly. “I’ve sent for the girls from Disneyland, and for Thomas and Hotaru from Nagasaki. I’m going to wash my face, and then I’m going to the hospital. If he’s done permanent damage to her, I’m doing permanent damage to him! As it is, I want him castrated!”
“Kenji and I are on our way,” Hosyu said. “Call me and let me know which hospital.”
“Very well, Oji-san,” she said. “I’ll call you when I know.”
“What else can I do, Aster?” Lucinda asked. She had finished with Sean’s hands, and was working on Takagi’s hands.
“You can set up a room in Chiba House on the ground floor,” Aster said. “It will need to be set up for an invalid. Something tells me that Michiru isn’t going to be recovering anytime soon, and I don’t want her recovering in a hospital. Get one of those powered beds, all the equipment you think we MIGHT need. Get a referral for a nursing agency. We’ll need around the clock nurses for a while. Assume she won’t be able to eat solid food. Her jaw was misshapen. Get stuff so we can bathe her without putting her in a tub. Get … get … “ She turned to her older sister, helpless in her grief.
“I will take care of everything, Aster,” Lucinda promised. “You go take care of Michiru. Take Nathan, Quentin, and Taiyono with you. You will need them, I think. I will inform the girls when they get here, and I will be here when Hotaru calls.” She finished taping Takagi’s knuckles and got up.
“We’re going with you,” Takagi said. “Lucinda can handle things here. We need to be there, for Michiru.”
“Okay,” Aster said. “We’ll take the Rolls. Get some changes of clothing, because I’m not leaving until she can.” She turned and walked outside.
~*~*~*~*~
Michiru woke to strange sounds and smells, pain, and a familiar voice nearby.
“ … tell us what her prognosis is, doctor,” Haruka was saying. “We have the money to arrange for her care at home. We want to know when she can go home.”
“She needs extensive surgery on her hands,” an unfamiliar voice said. “Almost every bone was broken. It will be a miracle if she has any use of them, at all, much less complete use of them.”
“I will make sure she has use of them,” Aster’s voice broke in. “I will make sure that we use the latest in medical knowledge. For instance, I know that there are neurosurgeons and microsurgeons that can be flown here to operate on her hands. I will have them brought here, and she will have the best that I can get, if I have to take her out of the country to do it!”
“You do not have to be insulting, Fushida-san,” the same unfamiliar voice said in a placating tone. “I was talking about the trauma from the rape, and the broken bones. She needs skilled care. You cannot provide that.”
“I have prepared for that,” Aster told him. “My sister is setting up a sick room, and she is preparing to have nurses available. You tell me what she needs, and we will have it.”
“Very well,” he said. “When she wakes and has been checked over again, I will let you know when you may take her home. She will have to stay overnight, at the very least. I would rather keep her until we know that the concussion will have no life threatening effects.”
“Then we’re staying, too,” Haruka said. “You can’t make us leave.”
“I will not make you leave, Tenoh-san,” the man said. “But all of your friends cannot stay. I cannot allow more than two others.”
“Fine,” Aster said. “Haruka, you stay. Quentin and Sean will stay with you. Sean, it might be time to pull out that little box you’ve been carrying around for a year.”
“Do you really think that’s the right time, lass?” Sean’s voice sounded wonderful, if stressed.
“It gives you the right to make decisions for her,” Aster said. “If she accepts, then we can tell her family without worrying.”
“Very well, lass,” was Sean’s agreement. “It’ll be as you say.”
