CHAPTER 36
Keisuke was sick with worry. The blond had bandages on his face, shoulder, and stomach. A cast covered his wrist and hand. Still, Keisuke was determined to search for, and rescue, Takumi. Keisuke knew better than leave Takumi's disappearance in the authorities' hands at this point. Detective Sugano thought him insane for arguing over whether or not Takumi was even alive. Keisuke's family lawyer sat in a chair next to his bed making certain the detective remained on task. Keisuke faced the detective wearing a harsh scowl because they were getting nowhere.
"You need to face reality even if it is painful for you, Takahashi-san. As badly injured as Fujiwara was during the attack, there's no possibility of him being alive. It's been three days since he was attacked. Without medical care, he had no chance of surviving more than a day, tops. There's been no contact demanding a ransom so these kidnappers probably don't care about keeping him alive."
"Serious injuries can get better without medical attention, Detective. I've known gangsters that survived busted bones and gashes they received in vicious fights without hospital care. Taped together nail gouges will leave scars. However, if taped closed for a few days, gouges seal shut. If Fujiwara stayed down, his gouges stopped bleeding in time. I'm telling you Fujiwara's alive, Detective Sugano." Keisuke heard his obvious anguish and anger as he argued with the stubborn middle-aged man in charge.
Sugano's voice hardened. "I understand that you don't want to accept this. We made this call after analyzing the blood on the weapons and ground. I know your, . . . uhm, . . . friend, . . . put up an extraordinary fight. It's a shame that someone as young and talented as they say that Fujiwara was died in such a gruesome way. However, if not for the rumors about the two of you, no one would have attacked him."
Otosān's lawyer spoke. "Detective Sugano, must I remind you yet again that demanding answers to my client's sexual orientation is irrelevant to this case. One of the attacker's stated clearly to several of the victims that this attack was about money. That attacker admitted having orders to take all of Project D's street racing team hostage. Therefore, conjectures about Fujiwara Takumi, or Takahashi Keisuke's sexual orientation have no place within your investigation and should remain absent in your questioning."
Keisuke snorted, and stared Detective Sugano down. He was desperate to sway the stubborn man, so curbed his tongue. "If someone has the determination to pull through, they survive serious injuries with minimum care. That's a well-documented medical fact. I've seen it with my own eyes, Detective. Fujiwara has the determination and endurance. If his injuries get cleaned out before infection gets established, he'll live a very long time. Whoever gave the orders to grab minasan involved with Project D wants him alive. Find Fujiwara, and you'll also find Matsimoto, Takeuchi, and Fumihiro. I'll gladly make myself a target to force a second attack if it helps get them back. I'll leave this damned hospital and start searching for them on my own if you don't stop wasting so much time."
"You're in no shape to leave here, Takahashi. I won't let you play decoy to lure this group out of hiding. I'm keeping all of you under close watch day and night. You'll stay in this bed. That goes for the rest of you too." Detective Sugano growled as he looked around the small common room Keisuke and his teammates shared in the hospital.
"Well, looks like I've come at a bad time." Keisuke tensed and turned his head. Tohji stopped near Hiroshi's bed as he took in the scene.
"I need to get the hell out of here so I can start looking for Fujiwara. The kēsatsukan stationed outside act like I'm a criminal. They should be grilling the assholes that attacked minasan instead of me." Keisuke grumbled at Tohji as he waved him closer.
"Calm down, Keisuke-kun. I'm sure there's a valid reason for their questions." Tohji spoke as he stopped beside his bed.
"Detective Sugano's determined to find out whether the street rumors are true or not so he can blow this off. I have to do something before it's too late since the authorities aren't interested in finding Takumi."
"With your broken hand, sprained wrist, and stitches? Do you really think your gashes can handle the strain you want to put on them?" Tohji pulled a stack of newspapers out of a paper bag, and held them toward the detective. "I thought these might refresh the kēsatsu's memories about other possibilities for this attack. These articles have nothing to do with orientation, but are tied to some very disturbing possibilities that may explain things all too neatly, Detective." Sugano waved off the stack of papers Tohji held toward him.
The wheat-hued blond looked down at the cast on his right wrist and hand with a grimace. Keisuke had sustained the damage when he took a blow in his hand that would have downed him otherwise. A nail-studded bokken had also raked Keisuke twice before he took the owner down. The blond had stitches across his shoulder from one strike. The other set of stitches graced his stomach.
Keisuke snarled at Tohji. "Who gives a fuck about a few scratches, or newspapers right now? Takumi's hurt a hell of a lot worse than the rest of us, Tohji. Something has to be done while Fujiwara's still alive. This detective won't listen to me. Sugano here has the nerve to say Fujiwara's already dead. They've already switched priorities from rescuing him, to recovering his body. They don't know how tough Takumi really is. It wouldn't surprise me if he's goofing off because he's written Fujiwara off because he's homophobic. His excuse is that Fujiwara lost too much blood during his fight, so naze bother looking for him?"
"Oh dear, well both of you have the wrong attitude. Fujiwara-kun showed us all how strong he is the night you were both shot. He lost less blood this round than when his ex-girlfriend shot the two of you. That's a strong argument for him to be weak as a kitten, but still breathing. However, his chances get slimmer every day he's missing, Keisuke. Takumi may have busted ribs too. The wrong kind of jolting during transport could do deadly internal damage if that's the case. You have to accept that."
"Finally, sounds like you're someone who can reason with this hot head. I'll let you explain that it's damned near impossible for his friend Fujiwara to still be alive." Sugano turned to leave and Tohji blocked him.
Tohji's brows leapt into his hairline as he rounded on the detective with quiet dignity. "To be blunt, I'll still agree with Keisuke-kun's point over yours for the next forty eight hours, Detective. I know Fujiwara Takumi. You don't. Fujiwara's strong enough to make it this long. Keisuke barely comprehends the idea of backing down until Fujiwara decides to make him. After a couple more days, I'll concede Fujiwara's dead. These are the newspapers from the shooting incident last summer. They mention massive drug seizures being made due to the shooting incident, Detective. Those were compliments of Fujiwara's stalker pinpointing several warehouses for the Tokyo kēsatsu. Couldn't this attack be retaliation for the lost drugs?"
Detective Sugano looked alarmed as he took the papers. "That's possible. If so, then all three men abducted are already dead. I'll look into this. We should be able to keep the rest of you alive by keeping tight security in place. It doesn't make any sense for you to delude yourselves about the others still being alive if this attack is related. This newspaper might provide a good lead for us to follow."
Hiroshi sounded disgusted as he stopped Detective Sugano from leaving. "We know Fujiwara Takumi. We know he's clinging to life with everything he has in himself. Someone wants him alive, and his face kept pretty because they yelled that during their fight with us. Whoever kidnaped Fujiwara wants him alive."
Nakajo chimed in. "Fujiwara's got to be alive. I may not know him like Tohji-san, Hiroshi, or Keisuke-san, but Fumihiro's with him. I know Fumihiro pretty well. Fujiwara won't die while he has Fumihiro to help him."
Kenta snapped, "Fujiwara fought like a demon on a half-healed leg by using his crutch as a weapon. He fought without crying, or backing down no matter how much abuse they dished out. He's strong as hell, and even meaner than Keisuke-san whenever he gets really pissed off. Fumihiro's definitely trying to save Fujiwara any way he can too, Detective. We know Fumihiro's fighting to save him because Fujiwara's his friend."
"Ok. Ok. I'll take Fujiwara off the presumed dead list for two more days just to shut the lot of you up." Detective Sugano snapped as he headed toward the exit again. The lawyer left a few moments later with his briefcase in hand.
"That son of a bitch won't do anything before Takumi's dead. I'm about to lose Takumi because I'm in this damned hospital. I have to get out of here and rescue him, Tohji!"
Tohji's voice was soft, yet steely. "If you fall into despair there's little hope of coming up with plans to save your lover. Think, baka. Something doesn't feel right about this situation. Nani have the kēsatsu learned about this attack so far? Did this detective tell you anything about their investigation while he was here?"
"Detective Sugano was too busy asking about mine and Takumi's status all morning. The lawyer told me not to answer anything about my orientation, or those specific questions. Our lawyer told Detective Sugano it's unprofessional harassment to demand an answer when it's irrelevant because the rest of the team's in danger."
"The rumors do provide a potential motive. His questions might actually be relevant to saving Takumi-kun, baka." Tohji snapped
"Not even close, Tohji. I want to beat the shit out of Sugano for getting so damned stuck on my fucking sex life. If this was about Takumi and me being together, naze did they take Fumihiro, or Matsimoto the same night? Takumi asked naze Arai grabbed Takeuchi too. Arai wouldn't answer, but he never denied the charge. We've told Sugano, but he won't even listen to Hiroshi or the others."
"So, the kēsatsu have written this attack and kidnaping off as a hate crime. Being gay or bisexual is practically an unpardonable crime, but there are too many straight victims involved to get away with ignoring this case. Fumihiro's family and Matsimoto's fiancee will be furious when they find out. If they apply pressure, that detective won't be able to be so lazy."
Keisuke snapped, "I know that, Tohji. I've already decided that Aniki needs to make some calls this afternoon. We even told Sugano that Arai started the fucking rumors, which all of the Red Suns can, and will verify. The detective knows hard cash is involved in Takumi's disappearance. Aniki found out that Arai's 'Nēchan disappeared right after we were shot by Mogi. That's got to be the reason he started so much shit. His 'Nēchan's being used as leverage to force his cooperation somehow."
"Are you going to be charged if any of those gangsters die, Keisuke-kun?"
"I was defending myself against illegal weapons, and superior numbers. They can't charge me because it was self defense. Knowing how many people those fucking cowards hurt before they jumped me helps prevent me facing murder charges if any of the fucking cowards do die."
"If only Aki-kun, Shinsei, and I'd been there on time, Fujiwara wouldn't be missing right now, Keisuke. We feel we failed you."
Palpable frustration laced Keisuke's words. "We've got to find a way to get Takumi back, Tohji. You've got to help get me out of here." Keisuke's undamaged hand continued to tighten and relax as he glared at the black-haired man.
The blond had to lean back as the dark-haired stuntman snarled in return. "Shinsei and Akimoto are doing everything they can to help you find your teammates. You're in bad shape and need to focus on getting well, baka. Aki-kun and Shinsei are going to find Chikato and double check the situation with our old pals from the syndicate from a few years ago. Leave it to us to get to the bottom of this mess. I mean it when I say we feel bad about failing you."
'Double checking the happenings with the fucking drug dealers we fought a few years back is a good idea. I hope they aren't behind Takumi's disappearance. He's already dead like that damned detective said if those bastards are involved. Akimoto and Shinsei will find out more than the Kēsatsu ever will. If the Walking Man splinter gangs cooperate, I might be able to find Takumi in time. If the Syndicate's involved, all my old brothers will help put them down. It's the only thing we still agree on. I better have Tohji get with Teru and arrange a meeting.'
Tohji's eyebrow quirked as he shook Keisuke's shoulder. The blond snorted and answered in a heated, but quieter voice. "Domo for telling me. Shinsei and Akimoto will probably find Takumi, Matsimoto, and Fumihiro faster than the authorities. Those punks said I was the other one they had to catch alive, Tohji. My gut says Arai had to patch Takumi up. Tell Akimoto and Shinsei to pass that information along to Teru. Have him get feed back on the splinter groups' opinions about this too. I think they'll do a better job of saving our teammates than the Kēsatsu."
"The sedans that cut you off that night had Tokyo prefecture tags. Takumi's ex had made friends in the black market. Arai's 'Nēchan's vanished right after the shooting. I think we need to find out more about the situation going on in Tokyo, Keisuke. Can you get a message to Asada Kiyo, or his lover, Inoue Tohru? We need more information on those drug busts."
Keisuke mulled over Tohji's input trying to decide if it was a good idea to bother Asada beyond telling him there was no need for sponsors any longer. When Keisuke did not answer immediately Tohji began speaking again.
"Keisuke-kun, I can't imagine how much you must be hurting right now. I know you honestly love Fujiwara, unlike the others you dated before he turned your life around. We know a drug seizure happened because it made the papers on the fourth day after Mogi attacked you and Takumi. Asada has the right ties to keep Takumi alive if the Syndicate or Black Market is behind his disappearance. That's the reason we need Asada's involvement."
A female voice interrupted. "Oy, are you two done yet?" Keisuke recognized Sachi's voice as she stopped at the foot of his bed.
"Onēsama? Nani are you doing here? Shouldn't you be home already?" Keisuke frowned at the lithe onna who had one arm in a sling, the other carrying a shopping bag.
"We're here to make a delivery. I think that'll be obvious if you look in the bag." Aniki was with her, and moved to the other side of his bed. Shinobu stopped at the foot of his bed a few moments later.
Keisuke was irritated with the interruption, but caught the bag Sachi tossed at him. He dropped it by his bed without looking at the contents. Ryosuke's haggard face turned toward him. "How are you holding up, Otouto?"
Keisuke's temper ignited over the pitying expression on his brother's face. "Knock it off, Aniki. Get Otosān to discharge me. I have to find Takumi! The cars the gangsters used had Tokyo tags. Takumi's probably in Tokyo Prefecture already, or a prisoner of someone with ties to some Tokyo Prefecture drug ring. The damned drug seizures are behind the attack, Aniki! I have to do something!"
Sachi growled at him, "You're in no shape to go chasing after your missing boy toy, bratlet. The Kēsatsu are handling things, and are better equipped to get information and results than you. There's nothing you can do. Your boy toy was hurt very badly, and hasn't been checked into a hospital anywhere. You're making things worse for yourself, and your family right now. Your boy toy's probably dead. There's no use going into denial, 'Nīchan."
"Che. Don't be annoying, Onēsama. Takumi's tougher than you realize. He's still alive, and I'm going to find him since the Kēsatsu have already given up because the rumors mean he's a fag that got nani he deserved."
Ryosuke grabbed Sachi's arm and gave it a firm tug to make her face him with a sharp shake if his head. "Don't argue, sempai. I don't think it's wise to continue this discussion. Until we have proof that Fujiwara's dead, it's too soon to start planning memorial services."
Keisuke snorted, and pointed at Sachi with a scowl on his face. "Naze are you calling Takumi my boy toy, Onēsama?"
Shinobu spoke in a quiet voice. "She calls Sagiya that too, Keisuke-kun. You should be used to it by now. That's how she refers to minasan's boyfriends, or fiancees."
"That's not a good enough answer, Shinobu. Don't make things worse for Fujiwara, you two." Keisuke snarled at the group afraid the guards would overhear and report back to Detective Sugano.
Ryosuke snapped at him. "You went into a blind rage and almost cracked Sachi's skull open. You literally turned on sempai that night. If she wasn't a Kendo master, you'd have done more than bust her knuckles, and shinai. Or, haven't you noticed her arm's in a sling that you put her in, Otouto?"
"I didn't realize it was her, Aniki. I know I owe Onēsama a debt and a apology. I was way too pumped up from the fight to recognize minasan for a few moments. I told Sachi to look after Hiroshi and the others because I get that way in fights. If she'd done that, she wouldn't be in that sling right now!"
Shinobu spoke, "Onēsama's decision to go after you saved you from facing murder charges. You scared the hell out of all of us. We're all concerned about you because you lost the person you wanted to spend your life with, 'Nīchan. We understand that you're devastated right now. If there's anything we can do to help you, we will. We can't change anything, but, we'll be here whenever you need us to lean on."
Keisuke felt his teeth grinding as fury scorched his thoughts. Clearly, this group had decided Takumi was dead. Sachi leaned over Keisuke. "You were completely out of your mind freaking out over your boy toy that night. I don't blame you for my getting hurt because Shinobu told me that you gave him the legacy necklace. I know how temperamental you are whenever you get emotional. I would have been smarter about stopping you if I'd known about that young man beforehand. That's the only thing I'm angry about, Bratlet."
Keisuke stared her down. His voice was a deep, guttural rumble. "Sachi, don't ever call Takumi my boy-toy, because he's not. Takumi's my life mate, not some bed buddy I'll dump when I get tired of playing around. I won't let you disrespect Takumi's place. . . ."
Tohji glared as he interrupted Keisuke before he offered to replace Sachi's shinai. "Fujiwara doesn't deserve this kind of disrespect from any of you, especially you, Ryosuke! He's already been written off by the authorities as receiving some twisted, well-deserved justice because he accepted Keisuke-kun's feelings for him. Anyone that knows Fujiwara-kun should realize he's strong enough to face anything thrown in his face with quiet dignity. You've never met him, Sachi-sama. Therefore, might I suggest you shut your mouth and stop disrespecting Fujiwara Takumi!? He's fighting to stay alive somewhere, and probably running out of time. We know Fumihiro's definitely with him. Matsimoto may be in the same place. I'm certain they haven't let Fujiwara-kun die."
Sachi stared with her eyes wide. Keisuke knew that not many people had the nerve to tell this wealthy and powerful onna off. Sachi was accustomed to being in command and giving orders, not receiving them. "You dare . . . ?"
Ryosuke was quick to interfere. "Let it go, sempai. Tohji has a valid point. You've never met Fujiwara, so you don't really know him. Also, saying anything even remotely derisive about Fujiwara pisses Tohji, Keisuke and minasan off. We all agree that Fujiwara's an unusually strong person. Fumihiro and Matsimoto will do all they can to keep him alive if they are able to get to him as well. I realize you don't mean it in a derogatory way, Sachi-sempai, but, I'm even irritated that you keep calling Fujiwara Keisuke's boy toy."
"Domo, Aniki. I'd like to hear the rest of Tohji's information before we get any more off track." Keisuke managed to reign in his annoyance as he spoke.
Tohji cleared his throat. "Now, as I was saying before you interrupted us, those gangsters you fought are from Tokyo Prefecture. Shinsei and Akimoto are meeting with Chikato to verify whether or not the Syndicate Walking Man had problems with a few years ago might be involved with importing the seized drugs in Tokyo. Most of the gangsters in Gunma are huge Project D fans which gives us a very big information network since Fujiwara's disappearance made the nightly news. Akimoto and Shinsei are asking around to find out if there were volunteers from Gunma helping Arai. So far, every gang can account for all their members on the night of the attack. Even Walking Man's rival brotherhoods are mad as hell about Fujiwara being attacked. The original members of Walking Man gang are furious anyone dared to go after your street racing team."
Sachi huffed, "Typical brainless muscle-bound morons. As if the lot of them getting angry can make a difference! The last thing the Kēsatsu needs is a bunch of gangsters stirring up trouble. Gangster fights will force the Kēsatsu to cut their manpower to stop them fighting. That means fewer chances of saving the other two."
Keisuke ran a hand over his face. "It's moments like this when I really wish you'd get married. You wouldn't have the luxury of shoving your nose into my business, Onēsama. Just butt out! You don't understand the situation, and sound like a complete baka! This is vital information that we needed! Tokyo Prefecture is where we'll find Takumi and the others, not Gunma. My old gang has already gotten more information than the kēsatsu because gangsters know everything that happens on the streets."
"I'm bringing an equalizer the next time I visit for that attitude of yours, Bratlet. Since you like trouble so much, I'll buy a collar, leash and muzzle just for you." Sachi snapped in return.
Ryosuke barked at his ex-girlfriend, "Sachi, your sense of humor is uncalled for right now. Keisuke's correct. This information is very valuable. It needs to be given to the authorities as soon as possible. No matter my personal feelings toward gangsters, I know they're extremely loyal to their brotherhoods. Their home areas are fiercely defended from rival gangs. The fact that Shinsei and Akimoto have been able to speak to members of rival gangs without fights means Gunma's gangs believe something's gone very wrong. Since there's evidence that Arai was following orders, the gangs' information network could find Fujiwara, Fumihiro, and Matsimoto faster than the Kēsatsu."
"Gangsters are nothing more than petty criminals, Ryosuke-kun. It's a miracle Keisuke isn't already doing time in prison. Now, you want to give gangster related information to the Kēsatsu?! Have you lost your mind also? You both are going into useless denial! Without medical help, Fujiwara can't possibly be alive any longer!"
Tohji sounded thoroughly disgusted. "Gangsters survive serious injuries without going to hospitals all the time! I've patched Akimoto and several of his brothers up because they won't go to hospitals, Sachi-sama. You might not be capable of surviving that kind of abuse, but I know several men who can, and have. If the worst gashes are held together with strips of tape, and the person stays still for a couple of days, their wounds heal. If Fumihiro, or someone else, kept pressure on the worst wounds when they were fairly fresh, Fujiwara-kun stopped bleeding in time. He's still alive, but probably quite weak right now."
Keisuke growled, "He's right, Onēsama. Takumi's life was hell growing up. His Otosān left too many scars on his back and legs for him to deny he was seriously abused as a child. That's how I know Takumi has survived the fight. Don't tell me I'm delusional about the kind of injuries Takumi has. I know them inside and out. I've survived studded weapons without going to any hospital twice before this."
Ryosuke looked better as he listened to his and Tohji's argument. "I suppose you'd know better than anyone if Fujiwara's still alive, Otouto. You inherited the Legacy for a reason. I know the things I've learned about Fujiwara makes him amazing enough to do the impossible. Matte . . . Didn't you say all the gangsters came from Tokyo Prefecture?"
Keisuke gave his brother a long look. "Che. Hai, Aniki, Tokyo Prefecture. I keep arguing with you and Otosān to get me out of here for a good reason. Takumi's whereabouts is the most important thing I've got to get straightened out. If this attack is linked to those drug seizures that happened in Tokyo, we have got to get minasan out of here before it's too late, Aniki."
Tohji spoke after several moments of silence. "I'd like to talk to Keisuke and Ryosuke, minasan. Could I convince you to give us a few minutes alone?"
Sachi was still angry at having been told off by the black-haired stuntman, yet Tohji was unfazed by her irate look. Shinobu took her arm. "Let us know when you're finished. We'll hang out in the hallway." Shinobu replied as she gently tugged her sister from the room.
Keisuke kept his voice soft as he started talking. "Aniki, I need you to contact Asada and tell him everything we know right now. We've got to know if this is Black Market retaliation because of that friend of Mogi's."
Ryosuke paled as he began to comprehend where he was going with his thought. "You think this attack is linked to the shooting don't you, Keisuke?"
"Takumi's ex became friends with a known Black Market Fence didn't she? The newspapers in Tokyo mentioned drug seizures that happened because of Mogi's attack. It was his ex girlfriend that caused the trouble. It makes perfect sense that Takumi would be their main target, Aniki. The only thing confusing me right now is naze those bastards said they needed to take me alive and looking pretty to wrap things up. They wanted us alive. That means they have to take good care of Takumi until whoever is calling the shots give them different orders. This gang's after Project D specific members. They must have Matsimoto too. The attack has to be linked to the drug seizures somehow."
Ryosuke looked ill. "Keisuke, if that's the case, aren't you one of their most important targets? You were also shot by Mogi. She wanted to kill you so she could force Fujiwara to take her back."
"Naze do you think I keep asking Otosān to get me the hell out of here? I'm as good as abducted already while I'm sitting in this bed."
Tohji sighed. "He's right, Ryosuke-kun. The kēsatsukan stationed here aren't going to be able to handle killers if they get sent to complete an organized crime ring's dirty work. Organized crime rings kill off suspects before they can spill vital information to the Kēsatsu. The officers I've seen are only armed with sticks. We have to get Keisuke and the others out of here before nightfall if there's any chance a drug ring is involved. I expect something terrible to happen in this hospital before tomorrow morning."
Keisuke felt sorry for his older brother as Ryosuke stared at them both trying to come to terms with their urgent demands. "Even if you have a computer for a brain, Aniki, you have no idea about things that go on in the back streets and alleys. I've seen the slimy side, and I know it's a real possibility that the gangsters in the hospital right now won't be alive by morning too. I've tangled with drug dealers before. Add in the pieces that don't fit the idea of someone being homophobic, Aniki. There's Arai's missing Onēchan, the money he mentioned, and the Tokyo Prefecture car tags. Arai was begging for help that night even if he hid it under a gloating commentary. I think he was trying to give Hiroshi and the others vital clues to save his family and our team without getting caught, Aniki."
Ryosuke muttered in a soft voice. "Project D's going to get everything it deserves, starting with Fujiwara." Keisuke was becoming more concerned about his older brother by the second. Ryosuke had looked haggard before. Now, he looked far worse.
"Hai. That's nani Arai told Hiroshi that they were attacking them for revenge and money. Hiroshi said Arai's exact words were, 'Project D's going to get everything it deserves, starting with Fujiwara."
