THE BIRDS AND THE BEES | Pt.4

When he got to his room he gently set her on the futon, untying the obi around
her waist and loosening her clothing, hoping to make her a little more comfortable.
He checked again for signs of cuts or bruises but only found a big lump swelling
on the back of her head. She'd been caught completely off guard, he knew, and
wondered again what she could've been doing alone in this part of town. She'd
never come here before without Kenshin or Yahiko.

She must have been coming to talk to me, he thought. What a damned coward I've
been, he thought furiously. If only I'd gone to her first, she never would've
had to come here and almost get raped and killed! He closed his eyes from the
shame and guilt of it all, and felt the sting of tears start behind his eyelids.

hand with his own and replied, "It's nothing. How are you feeling?"

Wincing, she put a tentative hand to the lump on her head. "OK, I guess.
What happened to me? Why are you crying?"

"Five guys jumped you," Sano replied, swallowing hard. "If I
hadn't heard you scream, they would've...god!" He closed his eyes again,
his hand covering his face as the tears started again.

Eyes wide, Kaoru understood the implications of what he was unable to say.
She'd been incredibly lucky. If Sano hadn't shown up at the right time she knew
she could have wound up dead. She softly said to Sano, "If my mind hadn't
been so distracted I know I could've gotten away from those guys. My guard was
down and I was asking to be jumped. I'm sorry, Sano. I know it was stupid to
come down here alone, but I...I had to see you. And talk."

At her words, Sano opened his eyes and replied, "Kaoru, I'm the one who
should be apologizing. If I hadn't been such a dumb-ass you never would've been
in this situation. It's all my fault. Everything."

Kaoru sighed. "We were both being idiots. Let's just call it even, OK?
I miss my friend."

Sano looked into her wide dark blue eyes and whispered, "Is that all we
are? Just friends?"

Unable to stand the intensity of his gaze, she looked away and said quietly,
"I don't know. What do you think?"

"I know that friends aren't supposed to want this," he said, and
leaned down to gently cover her lips with his own. Kaoru was a little startled
at first, but melted into his kiss right away--after all, it was what she'd
been thinking about constantly for the past two weeks.

"God, you taste good," Sano breathed as he lifted his head. "I've
been in hell, thinking about this. Tell me I wasn't the only one."

"No, you weren't." Kaoru replied. "It's been hell for me too...
I'm just so confused about everything--you, me, Kenshin... I-I don't know what

"When in doubt, do what feels right," Sano murmured, capturing her

much more articulate with your body than with your words. Why don't you just
shut up?" She placed her warm mouth on his and all thought of talking left
both their brains.

Lost in each other, they didn't hear the urgent footsteps approaching the door
to the room. They were still kissing when the door suddenly slid open and they
heard a shocked voice cry, "Sanosuke!" It was Kenshin.
