Author’s Note: First of all, I’d like to thank everyone who has been reading so far! I apologize for the long wait for this chapter. Things haven’t been good for me lately. There has been a lot of stress in my life due to family problems. As a matter of fact, Thursday night, I imagined a spider crawling across my desk. I am extremely arachnophobic, and I went into a panic attack that lasted nearly an hour. I got to the point where I was hyperventilating and I couldn’t breathe correctly. To cut a long story short, I couldn’t even go near my computer for two days, but now that it’s passed, here is the next chapter. I’ll try not to let my stress delay my writing any longer. Please, enjoy, and don’t forget to review! ^_^
Devi: So very glad you’re still enjoying this fic! Thanks for your continued support! *hugs*
XZanayu: Yes, Rose certainly is a bastard, isn’t he? But as much as we’d all like him to disappear, he can’t because of his vital role in everything. I don’t want to spoil anything, so you’ll see what I mean. Thanks for continuing to read! ^_^
Chapter Four
‘Where am I? Everything is so dark…I feel so lost and alone. It all seems so unclear…I need some guidance. Where do I turn from here?’
Dee found himself trapped in a room with no windows or doors…nothing that provided access to the outside world. Panicking, Dee ran to the wall and started banging on it, hoping to gain a response from anyone who may be near. He only received silence as an answer.
Tears fell down Dee’s cheeks. Sighing in defeat, he slid down to the floor, trembling. Hugging his knees to his chest, he shook, not knowing where he was, unaware of what was happening, and, worst of all, not certain why the one person who was always by his side wasn’t there.
"Ryo," Dee whsipered, "where are you? I need you…"
***
Dee woke with a start, arm reaching out instinctively to touch the person who always lay by his side. His breath hitched in his throat when he found Ryo wasn’t there. Blinking his sleep-fogged eyes, Dee glanced at the clock and noticed it was 5:30 in the morning. That was when Dee remembered that Ryo had to leave with Berkeley to work on the case that day. Dee cringed. Of all the people that could have transferred to their precinct, why did it have to be that arrogant bastard? Since day one, Berkeley had made Dee’s life a living hell. Dee figured that either God really did hate him, or He had one twisted sense of humor.
Sighing wistfully, Dee stood up and stretched, walking towards the bathroom, shutting the alarm off as he passed it. His alarm wasn’t set to go off for another 45 minutes, but Dee knew there was no point in going back to sleep now that his head was swarming with unpleasant thoughts of Berkeley ‘Stick-Up-His-Ass’ Rose.
After washing up, Dee headed towards the kitchen, deciding that a nice pot of coffee would do an efficient job of waking him up. As he filled the pot with water and set the coffee beans to brew, Dee wondered why Ryo hadn’t woken him up to say goodbye. He then noticed the white piece of paper with his name neatly written on it sitting on the kitchen table. Dee reached for it and opened it, smiling softly at the words it contained.
Dee,
Sorry about not waking you. I got a rather early start and I know we didn’t fall asleep until after midnight last night, and I’m not quite awake enough to deal with your grouchiness since, well, you and I both know how you can get when yo eit either overtired or haven’t had enough sleep…but I do want you to know that I did give you a kiss goodbye before I left, even though you might not have felt it. ::smile:: Seriously, though, I will miss you so much, Dee, and will think of you every waking moment. You know how much of an efficient worker I am, and God knows Berkeley is ten times more so, so I will try my best to break this case as quickly as possible and return home. Besides, I don’t want to spend more time in Jersey than I have to…I’ve heard of the weirdos that state produces (1)! So please try not to worry too much, Dee…although I know saying that won’t really keep you from doing so. Just try not to, okay? I’ll be back before you know it. Oh, and take good care of Bikky while I’m gone. Try not to beat each other up too much…I want both my fiancee and my son in one piece when I return! ::smile:: I know he’s in good hands, Dee. See you when I get back. I love you.
Love,
Ryo
Dee smiled and touched his cheek in the spot where Ryo had kissed it before he left. He had indeed felt the soft touch of Ryo’s lips against his cheek, but hadn’t realized it was real. He was also surprised that Ryo had managed to write so coherently while he was half-asleep. If it had been Dee, the words would be scattered all over the paper and wouldn’t make a bit of sense.
"I don’t give you enough credit, baby," Dee whispered. "Please hurry back. I love you." He didn’t care that tears had formed in his eyes and were now falling. Dee began to understand exactly what the dream had meant. He needed Ryo by his side. Without him, he was completely and utterly lost.
***
Ryo stared out of the window of the train, his chin resting on his hand, watching glumly as the scenery passed by. No matter what he tried to think of, his thoughts seemed to drift to Dee, wondering what his fiancee was up to. Sighing, the blonde man glanced at his watch and noticed it was 6:30; Dee must be getting ready for work, Ryo thought as his gaze once again returned to the world outside. He figured they would arrive at their destination in another 10 minutes or so. What he wouldn’t give for this whole ordeal to just end right then and there…
"Are you listening to me, Ryo?" an irate voice rudely interrupted Ryo’s musings.
Blinking dazedly, Ryo turned his head toward the sound of the voice which had addressed him so angrily, and came face-to-face with a very pissed-looking Berkeley. Ryo gulped and swallowed nervously. "S-sorry, Commissioner, I got lost in thought for a moment there. You were saying…?"
Berkeley released an irritated-sounding sigh he had been holding and began to rub his temple in frustration. "I was just taking the time to inform you of what we have on this case so far, but since you weren’t listening, I’ll just have to start over. Please make sure to give me your undivided attention, Detective MacLean," Berkeley growled, turning an icy gaze towards Ryo, his eyes seeming to burn holes into him. "Now, so far we know that the Dark Horsemen are pretty damned good at what they do, since they haven’t been under suspicion until now. There have been a total of ten instances involving the smuggling of drugs from various countries into New Jersey. The last two instances, making a total of twelve involving this gang, have involved drugs being smuggled into New York, which is why our precinct has become involved in this. If the damned Jersey State Police had done their friggin job correctly, these assholes would be behind bars and all of this would be behind us," Berkeley ground out.
"So what exactly do we need to do, Sir? Is it going to be something as simple as a stakeout, or is higher action needed?" Ryo inquired.
"I wish it were that simple, Ryo. Our roles in this are ose ose as two drug lords from Brazil who are to meet with the Dark Horsemen to discuss drug smuggling plans. I will be wearing a wire, of course, and as soon as we get enough evidence on tape, we can nab them and send their asses to jail where they belong," Berkeley concluded.
"When will tbe hbe happening, Sir?" Ryo asked.
"Not until tomorrow night or possibly the night after tomorrow. After all, we have to make sure everything is carefully planned. We don’t want a bad move to cost us because of poor planning," Berkeley stated. Ryo nodded his acknowledgement.
When nothing had been said for a few minutes, Ryo turned back to the window and his deep thinking. He knew he had a lot of mental preparation to go through in order for everything to be successful. He just wished Dee were there with him to give him the support he knew he so desperately needed.

"Hey, Dee! Earth to Dee! Yoohoo, Detective Laytner! Wake up!"
A smack across the back of his head brought Dee out of his reverie. Raising his head from its resting place on the top of his desk, he turned an angry gaze toward Ted’s direction, who stood there smiling innocently at him.
"God damn it, Ted, don’t you have anything better to do than annoy me at the ungodly hour of 8 in the morning?" Dee asked wearily, his voice clearly showing his fatigue.
Ted couldn’t help but laugh as he sat down at Ryo’s temporarily vacant desk and shot a glance at his comrade. "Come on now, Dee. You and I both know you’d be bursting with energy if Ryo wasn’t MIA (2)," Ted pointed out.
Dee dropped his head to his desk. "Gee, thanks for the reminder, dipshit. As if his empty desk weren’t enough," Dee mumbled, his words slightly muffled.
"Sorry, Dee. Didn’t think it would bother you so much," Ted apologized.
Dee’s head shot up, his eyes shooting daggers at Ted. "What are you, a moron? Of course it would!" Dee spat out, then frowned when he saw Ted wince. Dee sighed. "Look, I’m sorry. These past two days have been too much to bear. As you can see, I’m a total mess without Ryo. I don’t think I’ll be completely sane until he and our high-and-mighty Commissioner are back. This whole situation has been stressful on the both of us," Dee explained, running a hand through his bangs. "Things had gotten so tense yesterday that Ryo and I got into a fight. Of course, we worked things out between us, but I’m still tense as all hell. And I’m sure Ryo’s in a similar state as we speak."
Ted looked sorrowfull his his friend, whom he had never seen in such a mess. Sure, he had seen Dee stressed before, but never to the point that it was tiring him out. He really did have it bad for Ryo.
Ted smiled, determined to get Dee’s mind off of the present situation. "Don’t worry, Dee. Everything will be over before you know it. Now, I’m afraid I have a case to discuss with you that we’ve both been assigned, so we need to get down to business. It’ll be good to occupy your mind with something else, anyway."
Dee smiled at Ted. "You mean I get to work with you and not JJ?" Dee breathed a sigh of relief.
Ted laughed. "Yes, you are safe, my friend. Man, but you should have seen the look of disappointment on JJ’s face. It was priceless! He looked about ready to beg the Chief to reconsider, but then he found out he was working with Drake," he said, winking. It was no secret around the precinct that JJ had his eye set on winning Drake over, since he knew Dee was a lost cause.
"Remind me to treat Drake to a few drinks in the near future," Dee laughed. Ted was right. It would be good to get his mind off of everything. As he and Ted started to discuss the matters at hand, Dee found his troubles slipping further and further away from him. He just hoped they’d stay away for as long as possible.
‘Please stay safe, Ryo. Be careful out there.’
