It was still daylight. Seras was fast asleep in her master's arms. Her face was peaceful like that of a sleeping angel. Alucard sat on his bed just cradling her. He looked at her sleeping face. He couldn't believe how much this affected him. He was not accustomed to feeling this kind of emotion. What happened to Seras cut into his very heart. Her pain had become his pain. He knew that her being a member of Hellsing would put her in positions of danger, but he was always there somehow to protect her or get her out of trouble. But this time it was different. He felt deep in his heart she had suffered because he didn't get there in the nick of time. He felt that he had failed her.
Why did this affect him so? Perhaps it was something deep in his past that caused this reaction. Seeing her being flogged mercilessly, struck repeatedly, all brought back memories of a time long before Alucard was bound to Hellsing. It brought back memories of when he was young. When he was still human. He remembered having been captured by the Turkish Sultan and been tortured until he thought he would die. He remembered there were times he almost begged for death just to make the pain stop. But he let his hatred of his enemies keep him alive. He let it set fire in his blood and make him survive.
But for Victoria it wasn't hatred, but devotion. So devoted was she to her master she would have suffered and been destroyed if it had to come to that. In torturing her, they'd also tormented him as well. In some strange way it brought back the memories he thought he'd long forgotten. He would make them pay for that.
Alucard looked at Victoria. Her face was now so calm and peaceful, but the image of that sweet angelic face twisted in agony was burned into his mind. He couldn't believe the guilt he felt. Alucard usually didn't feel the least bit guilty about the goings on of Hellsing.
"I should never have let you go alone police girl. I should have been with you." Alucard said to himself.
Perhaps it angered him that he was such a powerful vampire, and yet he could not get to Seras before her kidnappers did. He didn't like it when he couldn't control a situation. Even being Integra's servant he still had a measure of control. But the control had been taken away from him, and Seras suffered because of it.
It was all he could do to suppress the all consuming rage he felt at her attackers. But he had found a way to keep that rage under control for the time being. He just kept his thoughts on keeping Victoria calm, and also focused on unleashing his wrath upon her tormentors. And he would delight in every one of their screams. He would drench his anger in their blood. He would even bring back one victim for Seras to feast upon if she wished it. But he knew she was not like that. And in a way, that was just as well. He wanted her to be free, to be a true vampire. But there was a part of him that wanted to keep her the way she was with the human heart she held onto. Part of him did not want to see her become the ruthless killer he was. These emotions, he wasn't use to them. He wasn't used to feeling guilt and sorrow.
He certainly wasn't accustomed to caring about the affairs of humans; save for the ones he served. But Seras wasn't human anymore. She was a vampire made by his blood. And humans had even dared to think about doing what they did to her. When they hurt her, they also hurt him. For the moment he would not let these emotions show. He would keep them buried, especially from Seras. She had been through too much already. But soon he would quell all these feelings by dispensing much deserved pain and suffering upon those who dared to hurt one of HIS own.
Alucard slowly rose and set Seras on the bed. Feeling movement she slowly opened her eyes. She saw Alucard standing at the side of the bed looking down at her.
"Master? Are you all right?" She asked.
"Even after all she's been through, she thinks of me before herself." Alucard thought.
"Don't concern yourself with me police girl. You need to focus on getting your strength back. Sir Integra will need you at full strength very soon." Alucard answered.
"I know. She's not mad at me is she? I know I let Hellsing down by getting caught by those men." Seras said meekly.
"Police girl, you didn't let Hellsing down. I know you endured horrible agony, and yet you never once told those bastards what they wanted to know. Integra holds no ill against you. Don't punish yourself for what happened. You are back home, and that is what matters." Alucard replied.
"Master, I should have listened to you. I should have taken my freedom when you offered it to me. If I had, then..."
"What has been done has been done. Do not linger on what you can't change police girl. When you feel the time is right you will be ready to accept your freedom. Don't think about it right now. You've been through enough." Alucard said firmly. Seras did not press further on the subject.
"I'm going to see Integra now. Stay here until I return." Alucard ordered.
"Yes master." Seras said wearily and turned over on her side.
Alucard knew she was worried about him. She was not powerful enough to read his thoughts yet, but she had a good guess of what was going through his head. It was just as well that she couldn't read his thoughts. He did not want her to know what he planned to do to those who had tortured her. He did not think a vampire with a heart like hers would be able to handle knowing the sort of retribution he planned on visiting upon his enemies. Those details would be best kept away from her mind.
Integra sat in her office. She was waiting for Alucard. He saw the serious look upon her face as he materialized in front of her.
"Alucard, how is Seras?" Integra asked.
"She's calm. I left her sleeping in my room." Alucard replied dryly.
"What do we intend to do about the men who did this to her?" He asked.
"I have to know who they are and why they kidnapped Seras. They may have information vital to us." Integra answered.
"The leader was named Sarlis. He thought the police girl had information about the freak chip. He wanted to know the location of Hellsing. He obviously thought we had something he wanted." Alucard said.
"How did you come by this information?" Integra questioned.
"I probed the police girl's mind. I learned the leader's name and his reasons for kidnapping her." Alucard answered.
"Then we need to deal with them, but with caution. He may have several affiliates that could do us harm." Integra said.
"Then let me deal with them." Alucard requested.
"Out of the question." Integra replied firmly.
"Why may I ask are you forbidding me to take action?" Alucard asked with a disdainful look on his face.
"Because I know you too well. One of your own suffered at the hands of humans whom you don't give much regard for anyway. If I let you loose upon them I know what will happen. You won't leave a single one of them alive. And I may want to question these individuals. They may have information regarding the freak chip and the freaks. If I let you deal with them there won't be any individuals left alive to question." Integra answered.
"They are themselves looking for the freak chip. They're a danger to Hellsing. All threats to Hellsing are threats to your beloved queen and must therefore be silenced, is that not correct?" Alucard questioned insistently.
"Yes, but I cannot have one of my best agents getting himself into a lot of trouble on a vigilante mission. Those who harmed Seras will answer for their crimes, but not before I've gotten what I want to know from them. That is my final word, understood?" Integra asked.
"Alucard, understood?" Integra questioned again sternly.
"Yes." Alucard growled under his breath.
