Author�s note: Akito gets a little out of character here (OK well a lot out of character) but that is just the way the story is turning out.

Chapter 4

He led them down the hall and into Mai�s room. She was asleep on the bed, "She is asleep right now. They had to give her some pretty strong pain killers to help with the pain in her shoulder."
Hatori leaned down over Mai and gently shook her. To Shigure, the way that Hatori was being with Mai made him think that Hatori had feelings for her. Mai slowly opened her eyes and looked at Hatori. She winced from the pain in her shoulder.
Muttering, "My shoulder hurts."
"I know it does. Just take it easy. You have some visitors."
The others all walked up to the bed so that Mai could see them. Smiling weakly, "Hi."
Momiji was almost in tears, "Are you ok?"
"Don�t cry Momiji. I am fine and I will be home in a few days."
They stayed for a few minutes longer, then Shigure asked them to wait out in the hall while he talked to Hatori.
"So what happened?"
Wincing as she tried to sit up, "You know Akito�s temper."
"Easy Mai." Hatori said as he helped her sit up.
"Akito and I got into an argument and Akito threw the table again. I couldn�t get out of the way fast enough so the table hit my shoulder."
Shaking his head, "That boy needs to learn to control his temper." Said Shigure.
"Not likely," muttered Hatori. "You know how he is."
Mai was having a hard time keeping her eyes open. The painkillers were making her drowsy. Hatori noticed and laid his hand against her left shoulder, "Rest Mai, I am going to take the others home and check on Akito. I will come back by in the morning."
"OK." Mai said as she closed her eyes.
When he turned back toward Shigure he could see a smirk on his face, "What?"
"You like her don�t you?"
Looking back at Mai, "Yes, I do like her."
They left the room and walked up to the others. Haru was standing very close to Yuki, it was almost as if he was trying to protect him from something or some one.
"How is Mai?" asked Haru.
"She fell back asleep."
They all left the hospital and piled into Hatori�s car. Hatori dropped Shigure, and Yuki off at there home, then drove back to the main estate. The 3 of them got out of the car and walked into the house.
"I am going to go check on Akito," Hatori said as he walked toward the stairs. When he got to the top of the stairs he found Akito�s door still open. Hatori walked inside, Akito was sitting on the floor, it looked like he had been in that spot for a while.
"Akito." He said softly.
Akito slowly looked up at him. Hatori was shocked because it looked like Akito had been crying, his eyes were all red and puffy, and there were dry tear streaks on his face.
"Is she ok?" he asked in a whisper.
"Yes, Mai will be fine. She had a minor concussion and a dislocated right shoulder."
Akito began to cry again, "I didn�t mean to hurt her, really I didn�t."
Sighing, he had never seen Akito like this before. "I believe you." It was obvious that hurting Mai was having a massive effect on him.
"I want to go to the hospital tomorrow and see her."
"Ok I will take you to see her." He left the room and went downstairs to make dinner.
Out at Shigure�s house
They were all sitting around the table silently. It was Tohru who finally broke the silence, "Is Mai ok?"
"Yes she will be fine. Her injuries were only minor." Replied Shigure.
"That is good. What happened?"
"Akito lost his temper again and threw the table, it hit Mai in the shoulder and threw her against the wall."
"Akito always hurts others, then he blames it on everyone but himself." Muttered Kyo.
"Yes, and believe me I was surprised that he hurt her."
"Why?" asked Tohru curiously.
"Because Mai is Akito�s birth mother. He has never once tried to hurt her in any way."
"So Mai is a Sohma."
"No she isn�t," replied Yuki. "Her husband was a Sohma."
They all became silent again. Each of them had their own thoughts going through their heads. The ringing phone was the only thing to break the silence. Shigure got up and answered it, "Hello."
"Shigure it is Hatori."
"Ah, and how are things up at the main house?"
"Fine, I am just trying to come down from the shock that I am in."
"Shock! What?"
"When I went up to check on Akito, he was sitting on the floor and he had been crying."
"Crying, are you serious?"
"Yes, he wants me to take him to see Mai tomorrow."
"Are you going to?"
"Yes I told him that I would. He seemed genuinely sorry for what he had done."
"He should, she is his mother after all."
"I know well I had better go."
"OK. Bye."
Shigure hung up the phone and turned back toward the others.
"Who was on the phone?" asked Yuki.
"Hatori was but it is nothing to worry about."
