~~~ Chapter 3 ~~~
Tap-tap-tap-tap-tap. Faye Valentine tapped one booted foot incessantly against the floor, her expression one of acute impatience. Arms crossed and back leaned against the wall, she glared at Electra who sat opposite her, head rested on one hand. They were in the hospital lobby, waiting for word from the doctor about Spike's condition.
Spike had been wheeled into the operating room hours earlier. He had been bleeding copiously and was only semi-conscious. Faye was only informed about an hour later since it took Jet that whole time to locate her. Now, roughly five hours later, they were still in the lobby and still no word from the doctor.
For the sixth time in an hour, Electra watched Faye stand up and peer through the window of the room marked OR. She heard the sound of a door sliding open and she looked up but it was only Jet. The ex-ISSP was back from making sure that everything was in order at the Bebop and that the police were properly informed of a possible bomb in the shopping mall. The building has since then been closed to the public while the ISSP tried to locate the brown paper bag containing Gunther Planchet's bomb. When he neared the two women, he glanced questioningly at them, asking, "Any word yet?"
Electra shook her head "no." Then she siddled a little bit to the side to make room for Jet who sat down beside her on the bench with a grunt.
"Aargh!" Faye suddenly exclaimed from where she stood. She threw her hands up in frustration as she said to no one in particular, "What's taking so long?" Then, still mumbling, she sulked back to her seat and returned to glaring at Electra.
In truth, Faye didn't really blame the brunette for Spike's condition but she couldn't find anyone else to pin the fault to. She was supposed to be working with Spike on this bounty but she backed out at the last minute. So it was, for all intents and purposes, her fault but of course, the feisty bounty huntress wouldn't admit to that. Besides, Electra didn't seem to mind that Faye was blaming her. Thus, in just a span of four hours, Faye Valentine acquired a new habit to which Electra had grown immune to.
"Got word from our Mr. X," Jet said quietly to Electra, referring to the man who set the bounty for Planchet's capture. "He wants the package delivered an hour from now," he added.
The brunette nodded. Then casting a cursory glance in Faye's direction, she looked at Jet and said, "I'll go."
"You sure?"
Nodding once more, she rose from her seat. Jet followed. "Electra, you don't have to, you know. I could do it and you could stay here. It could be dangerous for you to be out there alone."
Jet's thoughtfulness and concern touched her and she smiled, her dark gray eyes softening a bit. Then she replied, "He's your friend, Jet. You should be here when he wakes up." And with that, she slowly walked towards the door.
"Where the hell do you think you're going?" It was Faye's voice. Sharp. Distinct. She stood, hands on her hip and an annoyed expression on her sultry face. When the brunette didn't reply, she turned to Jet who was also standing, fixing his worried eyes on Electra's rapidly retreating figure. "Jet, do something!" The irate bounty huntress said but the bald man merely closed his eyes and returned to his seat.
"Oh by the way, Faye," Electra said from the doorway, her tone casual. "I'll need to use your hangar."
"Like hell you a--"
Electra stepped out and closed the door, effectively shutting out Faye's cursings from the other side. She had no trouble finding the Redtail hastily "parked" just outside the hospital. Apparently, Faye was in so much of a hurry to get inside that she didn't bother herself with proper parking. When Electra arrived at the ship, two hospital guards were looking it over and scratching their heads.
"And you say that some crazy chick just landed it here and jumped out just like that?" The older of the two men was asking.
"Yeah, that's what I said," the younger man replied.
"I'll take it from here, boys," Electra said, pressing the bracelet she took from Faye. Instantly, the door of the Redtail slid open and she jumped in.
"What the...?" The older guard said, his jaw dropping as the thrusters began to engage and the spaceship started to float.
Inside, Electra glanced only once at the console in front of her before she figured out how to operate the ship. She pressed a switch and watched the row of buttons in front glow a pale yellow. Then laying her right hand on the jack, she slowly pulled. The Redtail hovered for a bit before it shot off into the air.
Once airborne, she placed the ship on auto-pilot, having fed the coordinates for the Bebop's location to its navigation system. Then, she called Ed.
"Helloooooo!" Ed's grating, high-pitched voice screeched through the speaker.
"Ed, it's Electra."
"Yippy-dippy, Electra-fy! How are youuuuu?"
Electra held the speaker away from her ear as she grimaced. "I'm fine, thanks," she replied. "Listen, I'm on the Redtail right now and heading there. How's everything going?"
"Oh, Edward's fine, Electra-lectra. And Ein's happy to hear from you. Aren't you happy, Ein?"
Electra heard a "woof" in the background and Ed's soft, girlish laughter. "That's great, Ed. But I meant, how are Mr. Planchet and Mr. Tron?"
"Pockmarks is angry with Ed and Baldy don't like talk," the child said, her voice lowering. "Are we going to keep them? I don't think they like Ed and Ed doesn't like them."
There was a smile on Electra's voice as she replied, "Don't worry, Ed. They won't be staying. Wait for me, okay? I'll be there in a few."
"Okay."
Two minutes before the clock indicated the hour, Electra arrived at the designated place of meeting with the mysterious Mr. X. It was an abandoned warehouse and Electra's instincts told her that something wasn't right. She stepped down from the Redtail and dragged the bound body of Planchet. Next, came the short, bald guy named 'Tron.'
A minute passed and still, no one came, certainly not Mr. X. On the concrete ground near the Redtail's single front wheel, Electra's captives were saying something. She gave them a hard glance and they instantly stilled.
The warehouse was quiet. Eerily so, Electra observed, looking around her warily. She took out her gun from its holster and cocked it, the sound appearing loud in the dead silence.
And then...
A soft chuckle suddenly sounded but Electra couldn't discern where it came from. "I should have trusted Spike to send a woman to take his place," a cold voice said, still softly chuckling.
Electra kept the gun close to her and watched as a tall, silver-haired man appear from the shadows.
