While Seras bathed Alucard stood outside the entrance to the castle. It had been a very long time indeed since he'd stood upon the grounds of his homeland. While he wasn't one for being terribly nostalgic, he couldn't help but be reminded of the days when he was human. He looked out upon the horizon. The setting brought back the memory of a pivital day in his life. It was the day he faced his troops as they prepared to wage a final assault against the Turks.
"Brave warriors of Romania! Today is the day we finally drive the Turkish scurge from our beloved homeland! Today, we will stomp upon the beast who has held her prisoner for far too long! Today, we will liberate Romania once and for all!" Shouted Vlad Dracula.
The hordes of soliders shouted and raised their fists in the air. They were ready for battle. They were ready for the slaughter that would soon follow.
"Men, I cannot promise that all of you will survive this day. I cannot promise that even I will survive. Those of you who don't make it back, know that your deaths will not be in vain. Your sacrifices will be remembered. Those who come after us will remember this day in history for ages yet to come." Vlad continued.
There was a moment when all were silent. Only the stomping of horses could be heard. The land was still dark as the night fought to hold onto its last moments.
"Romania has been starved far too long. This day, we will feed her once again! We will quell her thirst with the blood of our enemies! This day, the land will be stained with crimson!" He thundered.
Then the chorus of triumphant shouts began. "Vlad! Vlad! Vlad!" The soldiers shouted over and over raising their weapons to the sky as the sun began to rise. Horses reared as vapor blew from their nostrils.
"The sun rises! Sons of Romania, it is time for us to liberate our great mother once and for all!" Dracula roared as he led the charge against the Turkish armies.
The memory began to fade. Alucard turned to enter the castle. He stopped and looked back one more time before he set foot back inside the building. The sun would soon be rising. He and Seras would have to seek the shelter of his massive coffin in the royal crypt. He looked down to see she had taken her place at his side.
"The sun will be rising soon. It is time for us to sleep until it sets once more." He said. Seras nodded as she and her master sought the solace of their resting place in the castle's catacombs.
Back in London:
"Sir Integra, the queen's representives have arrived with important news." Walter said as he entered Integra's office.
"Send them in." Integra ordered.
For several moments things were peaceful. Walter respectfully stood outside while Integra listened to the news brought by the queen's messengers. After they were finished they left Integra's office. Walter escorted them to their car. After he returned to Integra's office, he could see her face was red with anger.
"Damnit!" She yelled. "The Vatican has sent a hunter from Special Section 13, the Iscariate Organization to Romania! They've caught wind of us being there as well." She growled trying to regain her composure.
"Should I send word to have more troops sent to Romania?" Walter asked.
"No. We've already more troops spread out in Europe than we can spare. We need what troops we do have here to stay put. The hunter's name is Alexander Anderson. His employer is Enrico Maxwell. I should have known that smug son of a..." Integra stopped again.
She shook her head. "I will inform Alucard of this development. He will deal with the Vatican's Palidan. This was the last thing I needed right now, a run in with The Iscariate Organization. Well it can't be helped now. I need some privacy." Integra muttered waving Walter away.
The sun began to set in Romania. Alucard could feel the call of the night rousing him from his daytime slumber. His eyes slowly opened.
"Alucard, your master calls you." Said the voice of Integra.
"Is there trouble master?" Alucard questioned.
"A rival of ours is in Romania. The Vatican's Special Section 13, The Iscariate Organization has sent their own hunter to deal with the FREAK problem. His name is Alexander Anderson. I want you to deal with him. We don't need the Vatican sticking its nose into Hellsing affairs." Integra stated.
"He shouldn't be too much of a problem." Aluard replied.
"Don't bank on it Alucard. He isn't an ordinary human being. He's a human regenerator." Integra said.
"Really? I've heard there have been experiments performed upon humans for this purpose." Alucard responded.
"Deal with him however you wish, just get him out of the picture. He has no qualms with killing anyone who gets in his way. I want the human casualties kept to a minimum if possible. We're depleted enough as it is here in London." Integra ordered.
The psychic link was broken with those parting words from master to servant. Alucard then nudged Seras awake.
"Is it sundown already master?" She asked.
"Yes. I've recieved word from our master. It appears that we've some competition. The Vatican has sent a hunter to deal with the FREAKS...and us." Alucard answered.
"Why is the Vatican so determined to stop Hellsing?" Seras asked.
"Because Hellsing employs two of the very creatures it is sworn to destroy. To this Palidin we are just more prey for him to hunt. And Integra has told me he does not distinguish between human and vampire. If someone stands in his way, he will strike that person down as an enemy." Alucard answered.
"Message understood. We'll keep a sharp eye out for this Anderson character." Ferguson said turning off his communicator. "Pickman!" He called.
"Yes sir." Pickman answered as he rushed to attention.
"I've recieved word from Sir Integra in London. A hunter from the Vatican's organization Iscariate has been sent here to deal with the FREAK problem. It's most likely he's already here. He's to be considered quite dangerous because he's a human regenerator." Ferguson said.
"A human regenerator?" Pickman asked.
"Yes. There have been rumors around for decades that such experimentation was being performed. I guess Anderson was their sucess story. Use extreme cauttion if you come upon him. He has no problem with taking us out along with the vampire targets. We'd better go meet up with Alucard and Seras. I don't know if Integra has informed them of this development yet." Ferguson answered.
"Most likely Alucard was the first to know." Pickman replied.
"Be that as it may, we need to prepare for combat. While we did take out the small group last night and one of the carriers was destroyed, we haven't found the main source of the infestation. We need to keep working until we find the source vampire. Let's move out."
Alucard and Seras stood outside the castle. The elder vampire had a feeling the human troops would be coming very soon. As he suspected, Ferguson led a small group to the castle.
"We need to weed out more of the FREAKS. I have a feeling the first lot we dealt with will be just the tip of the iceberg compared to what could be happening here." Ferguson said.
"Sir! I've just received word from Steadlum. There's confirmed FREAK activity just north of the village we've been staying in. People have been attacked and turned into ghouls." Pickman reported as he rushed to the commander.
"That's strange. We just left the village and there didn't seem to be anything wrong. All right, move out!" Ferguson ordered loudly.
"Looks like you're going to be putting what you've learned so far to the test." Alucard said to Seras. He told her to hold onto his waist while he began to float off the ground. She held on for dear life as the two flew across the dark sky at great speed. She glued her eyes shut so she wouldn't be tempted to look down. Seras knew she was going to have to learn to do this with her eyes open, but for the moment she just kept them shut. She only hoped she wouldn't be too dizzy when the two landed.
Before she'd had the chance to really adjust to being in the air, she felt herself and her master begining to descend towards the ground. The moment the two made contact with the Earth Seras let go of Alucard's waist. She felt wobbly for a moment but soon recovered when she saw the all too familar zombie like creatures lumbering about.
"Have at it police girl! Let's see how many of these bastards you can wipe out!" Alucard shouted unholstering his guns.
Seras was more than ready for the challenge. She rushed toward one of the lumbering ghouls and took it out using the trick Alucard had taught her. The creature turned to ash as Seras's hand went through its heart. Another lunged foward to take her from behind. She quickly withdrew her gun and blew the thing's head off before it could touch her. She took out a fair number of the beasts without much problem at all.
Any ghouls that got away were picked off by Hellsing soldiers. Just as the battle appeared to be over, a new wave of ghouls emerged from the darkness. These ghouls however, did not attack the Hellsing troops. Instead the things seem to cowar and run.
"Don't let them get away! They'll infect more innocent people!" Ferguson shouted.
The soldiers went after the ghouls who fled the battle leaving Alucard and Seras to fend for themselves. Seras had her hands full with the shrinking number of ghouls. Alucard sensed the presence of the host who had infected the victims. He let Seras handle the leftovers as he went in search of his prey.
Alucard moved swiftly. So fast in fact that his feet did not even touch the ground. He knew with silence he had the advantage over his target. He covered himself in shadow so he blended in with the darkness. The only way his prey would know he was there was to sense his vampire blood. From the black shield Alucard waited. He could hear movement. The sound of feet rustling the leaves on the ground, stepping on twigs and crushing of grass; he could hear them all.
The vampire waited with inhuman patience like a spider waiting for the fly to enter the web. He watched from his shadow cloak as the creature approached unaware of the trap it was about to walk into. He kept perfectly still as the FREAK approached. It walked closer and closer to the large patch of pitchblackness.
"Yes, closer. Alucard thought positioning his arm.
The false vampire was just mere inches away from Alucard. Just when it stepped an inch closer Alucard's hand suddenly burst from the inky black void and tore through the FREAK's chest. It exploded into a cloud of ash. Within seconds the only thing left was a pitious pile of dust.
"Target is silenced." Alucard said to himself. Just as he was about to leave a flash of silver streaked through the darkness. Alucard turned as a blade rocketed straight for his head. He clapped his hands together catching the weapon only an inch from his face. He let it drop to the ground. A wicked smile crept across his lips.
"So you're the hound of Hellsing." A voice called.
The voice was defintely male. Alucard caught the sound of a thick Irish accent coming from the unseen stranger. He picked up the blade and pressed it against his throat. He felt a burning sensation and quickly removed the metal from his skin.
"This blade has a blessing on it. You must be the Vatican lap dog my master told me about. Show yourself to your opponent... Catholic." Alucard said as the smile on his face grew wider.
A tall man with short blonde hair and green eyes emerged from the darkness. He wore a long black tunic, grey pants and a floor length trench coat. Around his neck hung a silver cross.
"A priest as well. I wonder how successful you will be at surviving a few rounds against me." Alucard sneered.
"Are ye actually gonna do something against me, or just stand there and brag?" Anderson taunted.
"Let's see what you've got Father Anderson." Alucard growled.
