After three days and eight monsters, Kaki was seriously reconsidering her decision to follow Tasuki and Chichiri. She looked over at Shii and the other bandits. None of them seemed to mind. As long as they could protect their leader, they seemed happy. They were all discussing the rest of the trip. As it turns out, Chichiri had a tunic that allowed him, and anyone else he choose, to go anywhere he wanted. He claimed that it wouldn’t be a good idea for Tasuki, Kaki and him to travel all the way to the mountain because too many demons would pick up on his life force. Tasuki suspected that the monk just liked too make him suffer.
“Genrou, I just heard that a huge snake demon tried to take over the caves. This is getting much more dangerous than we originally thought. Do you think we should send for more people?” Shii asked this leader.
“Hmm,” Tasuki thought for a moment, “No, not yet. I think the guys need to stay at the caves.”
“Kaki,” Chichiri sat next to the woman in question, “There’s a warm spring through the woods. If you want to take a bath I don’t mind standing guard, you know.”
She smiled, “Thank you. This conversation was getting a little dull anyway.” They walked through the forest silently just enjoying the feel of the woodland air at sunset. It would have been so romantic had they been with different company, Kaki thought to her self. She side glanced at the monk. He always wore that smiling mask.
“Why?” she asked softly.
“Why what?” Chichiri looked at her.
“Why do you always smile? I get these feeling sometimes, from people. And from you I get the feeling that you aren’t always smiling with your mask. That something important took your smile.”
“My best friend tried to steal me fiancé when I was eighteen and when I found her she said the she could no longer marry me. I thought it was because she loved him and not me, but she… she felt that she couldn’t marry me because she was kissed be another man and had cheated. Before I found out, I looked for my friend to talk to him…. I found him by the river when I confronted him slipped into the water and I got this.” Chichiri took off the mask. A scar crossed over his left eye, starting next to his nose running up through his eyebrow. Kaki gasped. When with the marring, Chichiri was very handsome. His good eye held such sadness, the woman almost rubbed his cheek to comfort the monk. Chichiri put the mask back on and looked at her. “The warm spring is just past these trees, you know. I’ll stay here while you go take your bath.”
“Thank you” Kaki said quietly. The monk knew it was for more then just the bath. The woman walked through the trees into the clearing. The water steamed softly in the cool night air. Kaki undressed and slipped into the hot water lake. Oh, it felt so nice! All of the tension in her sore muscles dissolved within the water. Kaki sank down until her nose and the top of head were all the sat above the water’s surface. She tried not to think. Right now wasn’t the best time for that anyway. When she did, thoughts of Tasuki crept into her mind. A naked Tasuki…. A naked Tasuki kissing her… a naked Tasuki kissing her while she’s naked too…. Kaki shook her head. Now was defiantly not the time to be thinking. She lightly scrubbed her body
“Hey, Kaki?” Chichiri’s voice carried through the trees, “There are fresh clothes for you too, you know. Just turn your back and I’ll put them next to the dirty set, you know.”
“Okay,” Kaki turned from his voice. A rustling from behind let her know sort of, what Chichiri was doing.
“You can turn back now.” He called. Kaki turned her head and with a sigh turned completely around. She grabbed to dirty clothes and pulled them into the water. The woman grabbed sections of the garments and rubbed them together in am attempt to get them clean.
“Hey, Genrou, where’s the girl?” One of the bandits asked. Tasuki looked around to see if maybe she laid down to go to sleep. He got up with a curse and quickly uttered “Don’t move.” ‘Damn girl’ he growled to himself.
“Hey, Kaki.” He called out. No answer. “Chichiri?” Again, no answer. He walked around the out skirts of the little camp calling out the two missing people’s names intermittently. It was on the fifth or so shout that Chichiri called back.
“Be quiet, you know.” He said in a calm voice.
“Where’s the girl?” Tasuki growled.
“She’s taking a bath, you know. I figured she would like to take one now since we are right next to a hot spring. So keep your voice down so Kaki can relax, you know.” Chichiri finished. Tasuki took a claming breath and sat next to the monk.
“She should have mentioned something.”
“Where you worried?”
“No! I just don’t want to lose our key. We need her.” Tasuki sat up suddenly. Chichiri nodded his understanding.
‘So that’s all I am? Just some key?” Kaki’s heart sank at his words. She had been listening to the whole conversation. It’s not like trees and bushes make the best walls anyway. She looked at the clothes that had been washed to the best of her ability now dripping from a near by branch.
“Chichiri?” Her voice carried lightly.
“What do you need?” he answered back.
“Where did these clothes come from?” Kaki put the white under shirt on. Although they were men’s clothes, there was still room for her chest to fit comfortably.
“I bought them, you know.” He replied.
“How much where they? I intend to pay you back every penny.” She pulled the pants on the ties where long enough to wrap around her slender waist and knot in the back.
“They’re a gift, you know. Don’t worry”
“Are you sure?” She started putting on the vest. Chichiri was in the process of replying when Kaki screamed. Both he and Tasuki ran through the trees. A huge, grotesque demon stood with a lifeless Kaki in one of its six arms. The poor girl looked small be comparison.
“Put her down!” Chichiri shouted at the blue beast.
“This girl is mine now. I will devour her and her untapped power.” His voice was like nails on a chalk board with a raspy undertone.
“Leave her alone!” Tasuki tried again. The demon laughed and squeezed the girl harder. She opened her eyes and gasped for air.
“Don’t worry about me,” She choked out, “… I can get myself” cough cough, “… out of this.”
The monster laughed, “Yes, try, struggle to get free and when exhaustion claims your life, I will eat you.”
“…no” Kaki whispered, not able to make herself speak louder. ‘I can’t loose. I need to fight’ the world had stopped moving. It turned black and fuzzy. The woman didn’t care now. She was warm and… suffocating. Kaki opened her eyes. She couldn’t breath. She threw her head back and opened her mouth in a vain attempt to get more air. When the breath came in a shout fell out.
“Let go!” She yelled at the beast.
In that moment two things happened at once. The demon flew into a tree and he hit with a loud thud, while Kaki fell to the ground but hovered a little before landing softy on the grassy embankment. The last thing she heard before slipping into unconsciousness was a faint “Rekka Shinen!”
