Hatori’s tires squealed as he pulled into the parking lot. Quickly everyone rushed in and the doctors and nurses parted like the red sea for Hatori. A couple men followed him back and started to help set things up.
“Shigure lay him down there.” He said pointing to the bed. “And then go into the waiting room.”
Shigure did as he was told and then pulled a muddy Haru out with him into the waiting room. They sat down quietly and Haru stared at the ground. “I saw him.” he whispered no longer able to keep it to himself.
“What do you mean you saw him?” Shigure said and looked at him. His eyes undemanding.
“I saw him.” Haru said louder. “I watched him jump. I tried to get to him but I slipped on the mud and I was too slow.” he said looking at the mud caked onto his hands that was drying and cracking off.
“At least you got him to us quickly.” Shigure said wrapping an arm around his shoulder.
Haru put his head down and continued to pray that Kyo would make it through. Unknown to him tears started to gather into his eyes and run down his face as he whispered his prayers out loud. Shigure listened quietly as Haru whispered.
“Please let him be ok. Please help him fix what ever went wrong.” He whispered. “Please help him make it through.” He kept whispering. “I’ll tell him everything as long as he can make it through this please. Please help him. Please I don‘t want to loose you Kyo. Be strong like you always are.”
Shigure held Haru closer and started to whisper his prayers with him. Haru cuddled closer and tried to get the look out of his face when Kyo had laid there with a soft smile on his face. “Make it through.” Shigure whispered. “Please don’t die on us Kyo.”
Shigure and Haru didn’t know how long they sat like that in the waiting room. Clinging to one another and whispering they’re prayers for everyone to hear. Shigure opened his eyes and saw nurses looking sympathetically at them with tears in their eyes. Other people in the waiting room were looking at them as well. Some where even crying for the two sitting there holding onto one another for comfort as they whispered. Shigure just turned his eyes away and continued. Hours past when Hatori finally entered the room.
Shigure and Haru looked up at him with pleading eyes. “Tell us.” Haru said.
Hatori paused for a moment looking at both of them. They both looked extremely tired like they could collapse at any moment. Quiet his started to tell them hoping they would stop him before he got to far. “He broke his shoulder blade on contact along with the ball and socket joint of his left arm. His right arm was broken in three places. Every single rib in his body is broke. His floating ones punctured one of his lungs there was some other internal bleeding.” He said leaving it vague. “ His hips are fractured and both of his legs are broken in several places.” He answered and looked at them.
Haru’s face fell. “What about his head?”
Hatori looked away. He feared this question. “His skull was fractured. More then likely he will have memory loss and right now I’m just hoping he doesn’t had any other problems.” He answered and then looked back at them.
“Will he be able to walk?” Shigure asked.
Hatori took a deep breath. He was waiting for that question and dreading it as well. “More then likely he won’t regain full mobility.” He whispered looking at Haru. “But we can always hope for the best but prepare for the worst.” he answered question.
“I want to see him.” Haru said looking up at him seriously.
“You won’t like what you see.” He said calmly warning the youth in front of him.
“I don’t care.” Haru answered tears shinning in his grey eyes.
“Very well.” He said and motioned for both of them to follow him.
Everything was quiet as they entered the room. Haru let out a whimper as he saw Kyo laying on the bed tubes and I.V’s stung every where the eye could see. He walked over and saw Kyo was almost in a complete body cast. closing his eyes he reached out to hold Kyo’s hand. Slowly it was getting warmer but it still wasn’t good enough for him.
“Do you think he can hear us?” Haru asked and pushed a small piece of hair away from his face.
“Yes.” Hatori said even though in all reality he didn’t know.
Haru nodded and turned back to Kyo and started to talk softly too him. “Why did you go and do a thing like that?” He asked and stroked Kyo’s fingers. “Why didn’t you tell me. I would have listened.” He whispered and held his hand gently. “I never joked about liking you.”
Shigure walked up beside him and touched his shoulder. “Kyo why?”
Only the beeping on the machines’ answered they’re questions. Haru bent and kissed his forehead. Hatori watched and was thankful they didn’t ask more questions of him.
The reality of it was that Kyo had a high likely hood of being blind, not be able to use his legs, and be mentally handicapped. The chances of him being normal old Kyo again were slim and next to none. Kyo would never fully ever exists again. That was the plain truth that he refused to tell Haru. He watched as Haru so gently touched Kyo. The was he would skim his fingers over Kyo’s cheek to hold it before going to hold his hand again.
Shigure walked over to Hatori and pulled him out of the room. “Tell me the truth.” He said. “All of it.”
“The likely hood that Kyo will wake up or even make it through the night is about 5%” He answered. “And if he does wake he will not be himself ever again.” He said and looked at the door.
“I have a plea to make with you.” Shigure said and looked away.
Hatori looked up confused. As he watched Shigure.
“I know you hate doing this but please if Kyo dies take Haru’s memories of Kyo away.” He said looking up with pleading eyes tears gathering in his eyes.
Hatori looked at him surprised and took a step back.
“Haru saw Hatori.” He said using his whole name. “He watched Kyo jump. He tried to grab his hand but he slipped on the mud. He thinks it’s his fault.” He said pleading and walking up to Hatori to rest his hands on his chest. “I know you hate doing it. I know why you do too but please I’m begging you don’t let Haru live with that for the rest of his life.” Shigure finished and put his head down hiding his tears waiting for Hatori to answer.
Hatori’s eyes widened as he listened to Shigure speaking softly to him. “Haru saw?” He asked vacantly and Shigure nodded his head. Hatori’s heart was then gripped with pain and sadness. Slowly he nodded. “Yes. If Kyo does not make it through the night I will alter his memories.”
Shigure wrapped his arms around Hatori and held him close to him. “Thank you so much.” He buried his face and looked for comfort in his lonely Dragon. For once the lonely dragon sought it in return. Hatori didn’t want to do this but he knew if he did not Haru would slowly be killed on the inside just like he was and that thought terrified him....
