Four months went by and everything continued the way it was supposed to. Kyo, Yuki and Tohru went to school, they would come home, and they would do their various activities. The only things that seemed to change was Kyo’s devotion to Tohru grow deeper and Yuki seemed to be getting more and more distracted. There would be long places where he would just sit and stare off into space. Shigure had asked if it was a new form of meditation. Yes, the world had continued to turn, but he was still dwelling on what Onwa had told him. True, Yuki had gone back to see him again, but the topic was never brought up. The young rat was getting a costumed to Wutase Manor. He had even stated to play with Houseki.
“The trick is to treat the head of house like a child when their children. If we make them grow up too fast they tend to go crazy.” Onwa said on one of the visits. The two had been watching Yari crawl around, chasing Houseki on hands and knees.
“Don’t get me wrong, Houseki knows she has the weight of the curse and the burden of taking care of this family, but she knows that when ever she needs help we are here to give her guidance.” ‘I wish I could have some guidance now.” Yuki thought grimly as July’s warmth beat down on him, even after dark. No, getting guidance would mean that he’d have to tell someone about what he’d learned.
“Yuki?” Tohru broke him out of thought. “We’re going to miss the fireworks.”
“Right. Guess I was just lost in thought.” He smiled at the young woman. She giggled back taking his hand and leading him towards the festival.
“Hey.” Kyo ran up to them from behind, “Sorry I’m late.” He glared at Yuki. The cat didn’t know why but seeing those two alone really made him mad. He took Tohru’s other hand and walked with them towards the brightly lit, lanterned streets. Tohru smiled the entire time. She kept pointing to things and laughing about how much fun she was having. Kyo couldn’t help but smile at her happiness.
“What’s been going on with you?” the cat asked Yuki.
“Nothing.” The rat looked at the rice ball who was currently perusing the one of the booths. She asked for a closer look at a hair clip. Kyo perked at the expression of excitement on her face. But when she turned it over to look at the price, her face fall back into its normal reassuring smile as the rice ball gave it back to the shop owner. She returned to the boys.
“Let’s go.” She smiled. The three of them started moving through the crowd. Kyo took another look at the clip and back at Tohru who was talking softly to Yuki.
“You know. I’ve kinda noticed that you’ve been down lately. If there is anything I can do to help, please, just let me know.” Tohru said looking at the ground.
“Miss Honda, I’m sorry for worrying you. I just have a lot on my mind right now. I was hit with some information that I need to sort out by myself. But… thank you.” He gave her a small smile. “If you’ll excuse, I need to find the restroom. I’ll just find you two later.” Yuki turned to the general direction he’d last seen them.
“Tohru, where’d that damn rat go?” Kyo caught up to her.
“He needed the restroom. He said he’d meet up with us later.”
“Come on.” Kyo took Tohru’s hand and they continued to walk through the packed street. “Can we go over there? I don’t do too well in crowds.” Kyo motioned to a little ally that led to the riverbank.
“Sure.” Tohru was automatically steered to the quiet area. They slowed to a nice walking pace as they neared the water.
“Oh, I got this for you. You know, for white day and all. I know I still kinda owe you from last year and then this year. So, here.” Kyo handed Tohru a little white paper bag. The girl blushed and opened the parcel. Inside sat the hair clip she’d been wanting. Tohru held it in her hand and stared at it with all of the wonder she’s felt when she first set eyes on it. The metallic looking blue glass shone in the dim light and there where beautiful streaks of gold, green, silver and purple. The riceball just gazed at it until she realized how much Kyo spend on it.
“Oh no, I couldn’t accept this, it would be too much!” Tohru wrapped her hand around it.
“Come on, it’s a gift. I can’t use it so just say thank you like a normal person.”
“Thank you so much!” The girl resisted the urge to hug him. Kyo had grown a great deal in her heart. It was to the point where it just made her happy to see him in the morning. Tohru tried to pull the tie out of her hair but it snagged.
“Um, Kyo, it’s stuck. Could you help?” The rice ball blushed again. The cat hid his smile and moved closer to the girl to look at the problem. His nimble fingers worked to gently untangle the stubborn elastic band. Kyo growled in frustration a bit and moved closer the get a better look. Finally the band gave.
“Got it.” He said.
“Really? Thank you.” Tohru turned and her face collided with Kyo’s. Lips met in what was Tohru’s first kiss and Kyo’s first kiss with a woman that he loved. Truthfully, Kagura didn’t count. Neither tried to pull away. It felt too nice; too… perfect. Kyo angled himself around so Tohru wouldn’t have to strain her neck. The girl moved closer, placing her hands on his chest so she wouldn’t transform him. Turning Kyo into a cat would defiantly ruin the moment.
Yuki just stood in amazement. Tohru and Kyo…. He knew Kyo was in love Tohru but he didn’t know she felt the same way. Yuki started to move away but something caught his eye. He squinted to get a better look at what was in the rice ball’s hand. What ever it was, it sparkled. Yuki thought for a moment before a familiar yell caught is attention.
“Oh, Kyo, I’m sorry. I never should have done that! What was I thinking? I am so sorry. I was… it’s just… it’s such a nice… oh…” Tohru put her hands over her blushing face.
“Tohru… I… I’ve… come on,” Kyo bushed, “Let’s go find that damn rat.” The cat moved behind the young woman taking the clip from her hand. He lightly ran his fingers through her hair, gently pulling it into the waiting bars of the clasp. Kyo stood in front of Tohru. He softly kissed her on the check. Whispering in her ear, “I’m glad you like it.”
Yuki watched the entire exchange, waiting for the right time to “come back”. Kyo straightened and the rat chose that time to call out.
“Miss Honda, I found you. And Kyo.” He raised his eyebrow at the flushed face of the cat. Tohru turned bright red, doing her impression of the strawberries that she’s so found of.
“Come on; let’s go enjoy the rest of the festival.” Tohru smiled. And they did just that.
The group didn’t get home until well after eleven. Shigure was sitting up waiting for them.
“Yuki, I got a call from Hatori. Apparently Akito wants you too go see him as soon as possible. In fact, Hatori’s on his way here now. I suggest packing an over night bag.” He said somberly, soberly, in a very un- Shigure fashion. Yuki nodded once before going upstairs. Kyo and Tohru just stood in the hall, stunned.
“Um, Yuki?” The rice ball rushed after him “Is there any thing I can do to help?” her voice disappeared up the stairs along with her.
“Hmm, don’t think I didn’t notice the new clip in Tohru’s hair. We’ll be discussing it tomorrow.” ‘Teasing me is more like it.’ Kyo grumbled and went to his room. He tried to read but the feelings of unrest and dis-ease in the house made it impossible to concentrate. After fifteen minutes He heard to door bell ring and the door to Yuki’s room open and close, then footsteps leading down stairs. After some talking the front door closed. The cat got up restlessly from his bed and ventured out into the hall. He walked around for a bit before hearing soft sobs coming from Tohru’s room. Before knocking he heard, “Oh mom, it’s awful. I don’t know why but Yuki is really afraid of Akito and now he has to go stay with him. I’m so worried. I really do hope he’ll be alright.” She whimpered a little before she started crying again. Kyo knocked and opened the door before Tohru could answer. Her eyes were puffy and red and her nose was running. The cat remembered something he’d read. ‘Real crying is like real sex, if it’s done right it’s not pretty,’ or something like that. Granted, he’d never had real… or fake sex but Kyo was pretty sure he got the meaning.
“Um… here… I’ll be right back.” Kyo disappeared for a minute and reappeared with the entire roll of bathroom tissue in hand.
“Oh, thank you.” The rice ball answered weakly. She took it and, with a section, blew her nose then, with another section, wiped her eyes. “I’m sorry. I’m just really worried.”
“‘Bout Yuki?” Kyo sat on the ground in front of Tohru’s bed. The girl nodded. “Don’t worry so much.”
“But… Akito.”
“Don’t think about it. This will… you know… be fine. You really don’t need to worry. It will turn out.” Kyo’s cat ears flattened against his head.
“I’ll try not to worry.” Tohru wiped her eyes once more. The cat gave her a small smile.
He patted her on the back. “Good.”
“Kyo… um… could you… um… you know… that is… well, down be that lake today…” The cat smiled. Of course she would have trouble asking. Kyo stood up, leaned in, and brushed his lips against Tohru’s. The girl stood and placed her hands on his chest, just like before. Again the mind- numbing happiness washed over the rice ball. As she contemplated the feelings the washed over her, Tohru tilted her head to the side. Kyo took this as a sign and put a little more pressure on their kiss. Even though the rice ball was still worried, the kiss helped make her feel better. She didn’t really know why but it did. Kyo took a step back, gently breaking the kiss. He rubbed his nose against hers with a small genuine smile.
“Good night, Tohru. Sleep well.” He muttered.
“Good night, Kyo.” Tohru said a little breathlessly. The girl watched him give her one more smile and leave her room closing the door behind him. Tohru gave one last small prayer that everything would turn out for the best and crawled into bed.
