Chapter #4 Basil and Betrayal

Zoro had decided to take a little nap after breakfast. He had just sat down and started to slip into dream world when he heard his name. “Zoro…Zoro!..ZORO!” He couldn’t ignore it anymore. He opened one eye to look up at the figure of Luffy looming over him.

“Hey, Zoro! Sanji wants me to go get him some basil for him, but I don’t know what that is. Can you help?” Luffy stared at the swordsman with hope in his eyes. “Zoro has to know” could have been written on his face. Zoro didn’t know anything about cooking and couldn’t tell two different spices apart to save his life but when Luffy looked down at him like that Zoro just couldn’t stop himself.

“Yeah, I’ll help.” Zoro thought for a second reminding himself that he didn’t know what “basil” was either. {It’s bound to have a label on it.} The warrior got onto his feet and started toward the storeroom accompanied by his captain.

“Thanks, Zoro!” Luffy walked toward the storeroom with a smile that seemed to slice his face in half. He was truly happy. He could finally help Sanji out. Sanji always seemed to be yelling at him about something. Not to touch Nami’s orange trees. To get out of the kitchen. To stop stealing food. Luffy began to think that his cook just saw him as a burden, but now he was helping out! Sanji had asked Luffy to do something instead of doing it himself! He trusted him enough to think he could do this without screwing something up! Joy filled the captain, but he didn’t know why it was so important to him. Other people yelled at him, but that didn’t matter. When they yelled he could laugh it off, but when Sanji yelled it hurt. An invisible wound that Copper couldn’t heal. It didn’t make any sense to the 17-year-old. Why did it matter?


{How can he smile that wide?} Just looking at his captain’s grin made his face hurt. Zoro looked away realizing that he was staring at Luffy’s lips. Then it dawned on him. He remembered what robin had said that morning about dreams reveling one’s desires and predicting the future. What if the ancients were right? And Zoro’s first dream was the desire to gauge his and his captain’s real strength? Which he did want. And the second dream was the future? This did seem an awful lot like the dream. Luffy and he were going to be in the storeroom. And they were going after something Sanji wanted. And he kind of wanted a kiss. {WHERE DID THAT COME FROM!?!?! I don’t want to kiss Luffy….do I?} He looked back at his captain’s mouth. Those pink, rosy, wonderful lips seemed to mock him. Zoro looked away again.

{Did I just see what I think I did?} Luffy could have sworn that Zoro had been staring at his mouth. {nah, couldn’t be.} The goofy grin once again took command of the younger boy’s face. Why would Zoro look at his mouth anyway? They soon found themselves at the door of the storeroom.

Luffy was the first to go in, followed soon after by Zoro. The room was filled with selves of various supplies. The two men started shifting though the jars and cans looking at label after label with no luck of finding said basil. Then Zoro realized his situation.

{I’m alone with Luffy} A nervous sweat drop slid down his brow. His heart banged against his chest. The pound of his beating heart sounded though his ears. {Can he heard it? How can he not?!} His heartbeat seemed to rattle everything, but it did not. Luffy couldn’t even hear it which brought the green-haired warrior a great deal of relief. {He can’t hear it.}

Luffy picked up a jar. {basil?} He turned it to find the label reading “paprika” {no.} This was the worst he finally has a chance to help Sanji out and he can’t find any stupid Basil!!!!!! He kept looking. He wasn’t going to screw up. He couldn’t understand why he was desperate to please the chef. Why did it matter? He hoped Zoro was having more luck.

Zoro pushed jars aside just glancing at the labels to make sure they weren’t the spice they was looking for. He was using the easy task of finding it to keep his mind of his captain across the room from him. There didn’t seem to be any basil here. {That shitty cook, I bet he just told Luffy to find some to get him out of his hair. I bet that “basil” doesn’t even exist.} He was about to give up when he finally found a small jar filled with various sized leaves of different shades of brown and dark green with a label that read “BASIL LEAVES”. He had found it: a curse in disguise. At first the finding was a good thing. He could get out of the small storage room, he could get away from his captain, he could take a nap. But finding it meant he had to tell Luffy. He couldn’t just pretend he wasn’t there anymore. He couldn’t look away. “Hey, I found some!” Zoro held the jar in air.

“GREAT!” Luffy smiled shutting his eyes and letting out a small laugh in the process. He opened his eyes again to see zoro walking toward him. “Thanks for helping me, Zoro! =D Don’t know how I can repay you!” Luffy showed naughtier one of his smiles.

{ “don’t know how I can repay you”?} Zoro repeated his captain’s words in his head . Something inside Zoro stirred at the sight of Luffy’s smile. {Why does that affect me so much? He smiles all the time} Luffy did smile all the time, but this smile was special. Luffy was smiling because of Zoro. For Zoro. For Zoro alone. The heart inside of Zoro beat against his ribs. Everything from his core told Zoro what he wanted. He did want to kiss Luffy. No. He wanted more than that, but kiss was a good start. “I can think of a way you can repay me.” Zoro set the basil on the floor.

“Really? How?” Luffy was truly confused. What did Zoro mean? Why did he set the basil down? He watched as Zoro picked himself back up from the ground. Zoro just stood there for a moment looking at his captain. Why is Zoro looking at me like that? Luffy had seen the look before. He saw it when Zoro was fighting. About to kill. The look of determination. Before Luffy could react Zoro had a hold of both of his arms, pushed him against a shelf, and locked their lips together. Luffy’s eyes widened. Zoro’s lips were harsh but gentle against his own. Zoro had forced the kiss but didn’t force it to continue. Luffy could easily push away and Zoro had let his arms loose. Luffy lifted his arms up. His plan was to push Zoro off of him, but when he had his hands on Zoro’s chest ready to push he felt Zoro’s heart beat against his palm and all his strength seemed to leave him. His once wide eyes close and he pushed back against Zoro.

Zoro flinched a little. He could feel his captain’s palm on his nipple. Luffy was responding to the kiss! Zoro’s tongue begged to an entrance into the younger boy’s mouth. He licked Luffy’s lower lip in hopes that his captain wanted this as bad as he did.

Luffy could feel Zoro’s tongue against his lips. Luffy wanted to open his mouth to the warrior but then as his mouth started to open guilt seem to consume him. He felt as though he had betrayed someone. Then he began to think why. Sanji. He like he was betraying Sanji, but why? He and Sanji didn’t have anything together. Luffy was a burden to him. But Luffy couldn’t help feel guilt. He liked Zoro. He liked the feel of Zoro’s Lips against his, but it wasn’t the same as the emotion he felt for his chef. Then what did he feel for his chef? And if he was so guilty then why wasn’t he pushing Zoro away? Why was he leading Zoro on like he wanted the kiss? Luffy felt a small bite against his lower lips and open his mouth enough to allow a tongue inside.

{Luffy let me in!} pure joy swelled though Zoro. He started to explore the inside of his companions mouth when he felt something pushing against his chest. He step back two or three steps at the command of forceful touch. The kiss was broken. A strand of spit left from their encounter curled out of Zoro’s mouth. He wiped it away. The two stayed absolutely silent for what seemed like an eternity but was really no longer than a few seconds. “uh.. I.. Umm.” Zoro struggled to find the words to explain his actions. Luffy picked up the basil.

“Sanji is probably looking for this.” Luffy’s voice was shaky and uncertain. “and it would be weird if he walked in her to find us… uh.. You know.” Luffy looked away from Zoro and walked toward the door. Luffy was soon gone leaving Zoro alone in his thoughts. Zoro put his back to the same shelf that he had backed Luffy up to. He covered his eyes with his hand and slightly lit his head against the shelf.

{He was making excuses. It had nothing to do with that stupid spice. He wanted away from me.} Zoro mentally hit himself. {What was I thinking?! I should have known that Luffy wouldn’t feel as I do! } He couldn’t believe himself. Luffy’s taste still lingered on Zoro’s tongue. Zoro began to wonder why Luffy had been to responding at first and so reluctant at the end. Why would he just back out? Was he teasing Zoro?

Luffy walked toward the kitchen still feeling guilty without reason. What was wrong with him? He wanted to think about what happened but he didn’t want to remember it. He didn’t want to hurt Zoro but he wanted to tell him why he backed out. Nothing made sense. He couldn’t think strait. He didn’t know what to do. But first things first. He had to make his excuse valid. He had to go to the kitchen. He had to give Sanji the basil.
