Chapter 4
The pair ended up staying in Verdanturf for four more days anyway. Wally had a few things he wanted to settle first. He had started to write a letter to the League saying he was leaving Verdanturf, but Nimh had stopped him saying it would be much more fun to let them worry. They probably wouldn’t have let him leave anyway- the only reason they’d let him stay in that little town instead of making him stay in Ever Grande City was because of his health.
“Besides,” Nimh has enthusiastically said, “think of the scandal the ‘kidnapping’ of the Hoenn Champion would cause!”
“You seem a little too happy about that...” Wally pointed out.
“So? They need to loosen up anyway. Kind of lame to stay in one place and fight trainer after trainer after trainer and never get to have any more of your own adventures. Even the Champion needs to get out and do his own thing every once in a while.”
They made a quick detour to Lanette’s home to see if there was some way she could get Nimh’s Pokémon out of storage, and by some miracle, there was. The Pokéballs were shrunk down to the smallest they could get and shoved into Nimh’s backpack. Then the next stop was in Littleroot; Professor Birch’s lab. Nimh received a new ID and Pokédex from a very bewildered Professor, then gave a cheerful goodbye as he walked out to see his parents.
Norman sighed as he heard the knock, and was tempted to just leave it go. It was probably just some overenthusiastic, impatient trainer who couldn’t wait until tomorrow to battle him. Darn it, it was supposed to be his day off... The knock came again, gentle yet persistent, and Norman finally pried himself from his chair to answer it.
“Wally?? What are you doing here?”
The boy smiled. “I brought a trainer who wanted to see you.”
Norman groaned. “But it’s my day off...”
“It’s rather urgent I’m afraid.” Wally insisted. Beside him, Nimh was trying not to snicker too loudly.
“Alright...” Norman finally conceded. “Who is it?”
Nimh stepped into view, grinning broadly. “Hi Dad!”
The Gym Leader was stunned speechless. Nimh was alive??
“Nimh.... But....”
The white-haired trainer grinned. “My ID yes, but not me. My bag got stolen.”
Norman pulled his son into a tight hug. “We thought you were dead... You never wrote, and then the body...”
Nimh studied the far wall for a bit. “I know... For about seven months I was too busy, hunting down the Rockets with Lance. Then my bag got stolen, along with everything I had except the clothes on my back and my team of Pokémon... It was really hard to get enough to survive for a while, I couldn’t even dream of writing.”
“Why didn’t you call then?”
“You kiddin? Long distance is freakin’ expensive!”
“Well...” Norman thought for a moment. “Why don’t you two come in and relax for a moment. I’d offer a snack or something, but I’m afraid we don’t have much right now...”
“It’s okay.” Nimh replied. “We had plenty to eat before we left Wally’s place. We actually weren’t planning on spending a lot of time here either... So where’s Mom?”
“Oldale doing some grocery shopping. You sure you don’t want to stay?”
Wally tilted his head, watching as Nimh chewed his bottom lip for a minute. He really did want to spend some time with his parents- after all, he hadn’t seen them in six years. But there was something else, something a little more urgent that had to be done...
“I’m sure Dad. There’s something I have to do.” He shifted the pack on his back. “I promise I’ll write this time.” Nimh walked back over to his waiting Dragonite, looking back at Wally expectantly. The boy followed him, and together they took off once more.
