wireless card, replace the motherboard, and keyboard. I just got it
back yesterday and all seems well! -hugs laptop- Thank-you for your
patience.

The Academy Is…
4. Tourist in my Head
He was certain the room darkened to an impractical degree while a
spotlight and cameras focused solely on him, waiting for his
reaction. Light stopped inhaling his breath for a
moment…what-the-fuck!? Had L just busted him out with
that one sentence or was it just another innocent statement tainted
by Light‘s venture into the detectives past? “The
killer is my Mother.” L said it just as easily as he
blinked.
Composing his thoughts he turned sharply facing the investigator,
eyes wide, face full of faux shock. “Your Mother?” L
nodded serenely, a piece of chocolate finding it‘s way to his
mouth. “No need for the theatrics.” The teen attempted to
look genuinely offended, his mouth falling open ready for rebuttal
but L continued talking. “I didn’t know Light-kun held
such strong interests in my background. If there was something
specific you wanted to know, you could‘ve asked.” L
stood, moving from his chair to the open spot between Light and the
desk poking a pointy finger into him. “Instead you were deluded
enough to think you could investigate my private life on your own
time, behind my back, and get away with it.” Light’s
eyes went from the finger that was still jabbing at his shoulder to
the ghostly face that was glowering down at him. He hated being on
such an even playing field with a man who seemed to know every step
he took almost before he took it.
“Don’t even fucking lie L you wouldn’t
have told me a thing.” Which was true and they both knew it.
Even now in a world where Kira knew L’s real name and had
nothing to gain from it the pale one would keep his mouth closed
where it concerned issues regarding him. L could not help that he was
a private person and Light could not help wanting to expose that
privacy.
“I didn’t have to.”
“You’re such a fucking bastard-” Or a coward,
too afraid or possibly to estranged from humans to have a casual
conversation about one’s life.
“I am? That makes you what?” He circled Light his
finger tracing those strong shoulders. “I should hardly feel
insulted by a mass murderer.”
“Don’t try to turn this around, this is not about me,
none of it is. It’s you, your wants, your needs, and your
obsessions.”
“Some part of it has to be about you if you’re here
and I’m here.” One of L’s arms was leaning
into the top of Light’s chair as he thought. “We all have
obsessions, needs… What about the part of you that uncovered
the information of my family history, my Mother?” Light didn’t
disagree with that but L was construing it all now. “Were you
planning something tragic for her?” He smiled at Light‘s
cutting eyes. “Oh come now you can tell me.” The
investigator placed a smooth hand underneath Light’s chin,
grooves of his fingernails leaving indents on his skin. “Let’s
not keep secrets from each other.”
“Shut-up.”
“That’s no way to communicate in a relationship.”
Light often managed to look offended more than anyone the detective
had ever known, and it was an endearing quality for a man who seemed
to kill without conscious thought.
“What relationship? No one could ever love you.” Had
no one tried? Was no one a code word for Light? It was
funny how the teen assumed no one could or ever had loved him, seeing
as how he knew nothing of L’s past or past relationships with
other people.
“I see, and someone could love you?”
“Easily.” Light pouted not really meaning to. “First
off I wouldn’t keep my significant other prisoner.” L
smiled, Light seemed to walk into these things blindly.
“I thought I repulsed you and now you are my significant
other? Delightful.” He pushed his arm off of Light’s
chair and stuffed it into his pocket. “By the way I’m not
keeping you prisoner. I am keeping you,” Cold fingers trailed
along the fringe of hair attempting to hide Light’s beauteous
eyes. “safe. There is a difference.” He started to reach
for his coffee, stopped, then sighed. “Besides I need Light to
figure out what side he is on.”
“Side I’m on?”
“You’re either with me or against me.” This
seemed to amuse the young Yagami as he eased back into the chair and
stared up at L forcing all thought out of how close the pale man was
to him now. He noticed the detective liked that, he seemed to absorb
Light’s heat and there was an unusual part of him that wanted
to pull the detective closer as he revealed his answer. An answer he
knew would only infuriate the crooked one.
“Against.” It was responses like that, that
made L bare his teeth and want to show Light how much against
him he could really be.
“Sooner or later you are going to have to come to the
inevitable conclusion that we are perfect for each other.”
Light nearly choked on what seemed to be dry air and dust particles
as he gawked at L indignantly. “Light-kun,” He patted the
teens back, long fingers smoothing out the clothes beneath them. “is
the idea of us truly that horrible?”
“Yes.” The answer made L laugh his hand stilling as he
stared down at the younger one his hair hiding his features.
“It’s a good thing I don’t believe you,
otherwise my feelings might be hurt.” He went back to his chair
sitting peculiar in it while biting at his lower lip. “What
does Light truly know about me?” The younger of the two watched
as the detective chewed upon that constantly abused piece of flesh
trying to hide his smile.
“Too much.” L smirked, his features drawing something
darker as he thought.
“Has anyone ever told you how much you remind me of an
animal. A werewolf. Something normal by day and hideous on certain
moonlit occasions.” Oh how Light could say the same of the
investigator but he did not, as much as he wanted those words to
leave his mouth he didn’t allow it, he only felt he’d be
rounding a weary circle he was tired of rounding.
“I am tired of acting.” L was stunned, no rebuttal to
the werewolf statement, who exactly was he dealing with here? Not
wanting to actually stare into that black abyss Light busied himself
with his pant leg straightening out creases that just refused to
straighten. This happened to be one of those miraculous once in a
lifetime moments where he was being completely honest with the dark
haired one. He was tired, tired of acting and just plain tired in
general.
“Of course you are.” He picked up the last sugar cube,
licked it, then dropped it in his lukewarm coffee. “There is a
recurrent dream I have in which we have a certain conversation. We've
had it twice now, and twice you have given me two different answers.”
Light looked down at the papers that were still in his hand and
carefully lay them aside as his brows furrowed.
“Okay.” He didn’t mind the change of
conversation in fact he welcomed it by placing his hands in his lap
and intertwined his fingers. “Ask me now.”
“In my dream I say to you; You are God are you not?
That question you never answer which always leads me to ask; what
does that make me?” The young Yagami had his legs crossed
as he seemed to deeply contemplate this question a sly smile on his
lips.
“What should it make you?” His eyes were sharply fixed
on L, mystified that there could or would be any other response than
that. “If I am God and you are a mere mortal it makes you
nothing. Your subconscious wants you to be much more.” To this
came a practically hushed reply from the detective. “What if I
am much more?” Light barely caught the words but shivered at
their hidden meaning nonetheless.
“What do you mean?”
“Hmm. Nothing. Anyway, you respond nothing like that in my
dreams.”
“No? How do I respond then?”
“Differently.”
“Differently?”
L blinked looking un-ruffled as he turned to his laptop. “Even
though you tried to betray me, I would like to know sometime this
century if you are going to work this case with me.”
“… I was not trying to betray you. You have to
understand what it is like to be locked up somewhere with a person
like you. I merely wanted to know what your life was like.”
“You know what my life is like.”
“From a bystanders point of view. I also know what life is
like for a car on the highway.”
“Hmm.” He sipped at his coffee oddly, fingertips
pinching the cups handle . “Light-kun is strange.”
“I could say the same about you.”
“I can assure you, you have, but you use far more colorful
words.” L grinned. “If you want to know what my life is
like you will join me in closing this case.”
Light rolled his eyes to the side un-crossing his legs. “Are
you going to show me the real files?”
“I will.”
“Fine,” He said trying to sound put-out or un-willing.
“I will help.”
“There is one thing you should know before we begin.”
“I doubt there could be anything more surprising than
knowing the murderer is your Mother.”
“So says Kira, but what about Light?”
“And here I thought Light was Kira.”
“From your perception, not mine.”
“Maybe.” His mouth crooked in the unfamiliar way
Light’s does not and L frowned an invisible frown that could
only be seen by the eyes of the young Yagami.
“Her life won’t be taken by the death note or a death
god.” Out of the corner of his eye he caught the way Light
froze and the grimace on his face as he attempted to straighten
himself out for L.
“Like Mother, like Son.”
“Indeed.” Though L’s features did not change the
sentence stuck an unknown fear in him.
-o-
Unsure fingers wiped across the foggy mirrored surface, he was
unwilling to meet his own eyes for fear of what would reflect there.
Anger, possibly betrayal, and ultimately understanding. The kind of
understanding that he was not warm to accept because it angered him
to think about it, angered him to think he would allow himself to be
split in two. Light Yagami liked to think of himself as one whole
being not one with a shared mind like a schizophrenic or something.
He needed to believe he made the decisions he did because he wanted
to not because he was influenced or coaxed by someone else.
In that mirror beneath the surface of that reflection was
another person, another being that was Light but was not. There
was a person like him who had always been destined for greatness and
who was he to take that away. Light doubted that he could ever
convince himself to rid his mind of Kira. Getting rid of Kira would
be getting rid of himself. Wouldn’t it? It would be getting rid
of his goals, the goals he had started out with so long ago. To make
the world a better place, that was all he truly wanted. He didn’t
want to corrupt anyone or destroy life he wanted to make it better,
safer. Though the smirk that reflected back at him told a different
tale.
These were thoughts the detective simply could not understand or
he refused to. L was under the impression trial and jury could do
more justice than he. That was just an untrue and ill-fated belief.
There were too many loopholes in the court systems, in the jail
cells, and in life. His way was flawless and easy. He locked eyes
with his reflection and they smiled at each other as Kira spoke
through immobile lips. We are flawless and through our perfection
we will create a better world with or without L.
Therein lies the burn as much as he loved Kira he would not get
rid of L… or would he? Time was the only honesty he had to
hope in now. He hoped time was on his side.
-o-
“The detective bites people,” He was lying on his bed
staring at the ceiling still recalling his doubtful moments with the
mirror after his shower when Ryuk said this to him, eyes round and
oddly serious. “I saw him do it.” Light wasn’t sure
if he should encourage such a ridiculous conversation as he casually
turned his head to stare at the shinigami.
“Define bites.” Okay, he was a little bored he
could entertain this discussion for a minute or two before he fell
asleep.
“That’s why he can’t die.” The death god
stretched in between sentences as Light looked skeptically from him
to a spot on the wall. “He’s soul stealing, he’s a
vampire or something.” Soul stealing, that sounded quite
cryptic, though vampire wasn’t any more appealing. Also,
Light wasn’t sure if he kept the brunt of his emotions
hidden behind cruel eyes as he attempted to listen. Yet the killer in
him found this new information highly intriguing, and extremely
useful if true.
“As long as he’s not eating them.” He said
blandly because this was not something he could keep talking about,
not with the death god. L was not a freaking vampire, that was
something he would have known. You can’t hide that kind of shit
from someone. Obviously Ryuk saw the wrong person, an L look-a-like,
or it could have been some elaborate hoax the detective set up for
Ryuk to see. Light wasn’t falling that easily for anything, was
he?
“No, he’s killing them.”
He rubbed absently at an eyebrow and thought of L killing
people. That was absolutely absurd, it was not something he could
fathom. L did not kill people, not by biting them anyway. But
the quixotic investigator had been acting strange lately, the late
night walks, the taped up windows, and the unforgettable way L ogled
his neck. What it didn’t explain was everything before L made
that deal with Ryuk. He never went out in the day anymore, not that
he had gone out a lot in the past but the detective had attended
college with him. Which was during the daylight hours. “What
exactly did you see?”
Ryuk seemed annoyed by this question but answered anyway. “L,
I feel is a threat. I followed him the other night for this reason.”
A threat to what or whom the shinigami did not elaborate. “His
name was clearly written neatly in my book, yet he defied death.
Something is up, we all know this.” Light nodded slowly while
practicing extreme patience. “That night I watched from the
roof tops as L hid in the dark corner of a seedy ally biding his time
for what I was not sure at first. Then it dawned on me he was waiting
for someone and now I realize he was waiting for anyone.” The
pit of Light’s stomach tightened at the words and he was not
sure why. “Nearly three hours passed and this whole ritual
seemed pointless until a young man walked into the alley to smoke
something and L stepped out startling the guy but he played it off
and continued to smoke as L walked closer. I didn’t hear either
of them speak but I saw the guys lifespan was dropping faster than a
Kira heart attack victim. Then, in the blink of an eye L had him
against the dirty wall, biting at his neck. Your detective was like a
fucking rabid dog feeding off a dead carcass, a fucking mess. I saw
blood everywhere and L was gone I didn’t even see him leave,
but that guy was dead.” Light sat up staring indifferently at
Ryuk. That story sounded like something right out of a vampire book
or some other fucked up tale, regardless it ultimately sounded
fucking insane and not a thing like the detective. Blood
everywhere, a fucking mess… no that could not be true,
could it? On the other hand he knew anything was possible and that
almost alien part of him was attracted to this new L. The
sinewy detective, the bringer of all things good, the official
representative of justice killing people. He imagined the scene that
Ryuk had just painted for him, L’s perfect mouth on some
strangers, most likely a criminals neck, breaking skin and while he
found it irresistibly enticing it made his eye twitch with anger
and…jealousy.
“Let me get this straight, you’re telling me L drained
him of his blood?”
“Yes.”
“You saw all this from a roof top?”
“Yes.”
“You know for a fact that this was L, the same L that I see
day in and day out?”
“Yes, my eyes have never failed me.”
“Right.”
“What is your fucking problem? You got a thing for him now?
It’s too hard to believe your saintly detective could be
anything other than human? You’re really fucked up Light.”
To Light it sounded like a barrage of caged anger and insults that
had been waiting to be handed out. The only thing he could think was;
yes, it was true Light was fucked up, and if Light was fucked up
eventually Kira would have to be too.
-o-
He found the detached detective on the roof staring out into the
night, hands protected in his pockets. The Kira in him wondered if
the detective could survive a fall from this height, but
Light’s lips tensed, his body tightening refusing to approach
the slighter man until the heartless thoughts had passed. He
countered the morbid vision with L’s lips on his skin, sharp
teeth sinking past the fragile surface. Would he survive
something like that?
“L.” The ever-slouching investigator turned to him
looking more solemn than usual.
“Light-kun you are full of surprises, what brings you up
here?”
“You.” Moving forward waiting until he was standing
next to the dark haired man to speak again, he locked his eyes on him
staring at the curve of his spine then moving to his mouth and
finding himself badly wanting to see those pointed teeth of his. “I
wanted to answer the question you posed earlier, the one from your
dream.” L eyed him suspiciously looking like he had no words to
offer until his mouth betrayed him and he said, “You already
have.” I want to see those fucking teeth…! Light
heard his mind scream and he noticed his eyes had not left the
vicinity of L’s practically closed mouth.
“No. Differently.” L turned to look back out at
the city lights and the tiny people that rushed around in what looked
like toy cars from where he stood and frowned.
“There is no definite answer, the reason for this is because
I am many things therefore there are many answers.”
“Can I ask you something?” Is it true, are you a
vampire? It is… Is that why he wanted Light there,
would he eventually turn him into one also? The younger one doubted
it if that was the case L probably would have ventured down that road
already. The fact was the detective had kept it from him, had kept an
important detail out of his mouth and away from Light’s ears.
Why?
“The conversationalist comes out, what has brought about the
sudden change? You are cold one minute and the next you are here.
Kira must be very bored to want to entertain such petty
conversation.” When Light gave him a look filled with far to
many emotions for L to decipher the detective said, “You can.”
“The deal you made with Ryuk, he told me all the details,
his details.”
“His details are mine.”
“Are his details the ones that occurred in the privacy of
your mind?”
“Oh, so you want to know what he does not?” Light
conjured everything within him not to roll his eyes and throw a fist
at the difficult detective.
“Yes.”
“I divorced life.” Oh okay yes, that was what
he had been waiting to hear. That made all the sense in the world to
eccentric aloof detectives, not him.
“Which means what exactly?” The man before him
appeared to unveil his emotions on this roof and Light had caught him
in the midst of that. It was possible L just wanted Light to walk
away and wait to talk to him inside but he couldn‘t even move
because if he did it would only be closer to the detective. The teen
was only partially confused with the parts of his mind that were
betraying him. There was too much to inhabit his brain right now.
“It means I am no longer mortal. It means I am much like the
criminals you hunt, Kira.” It kind of scared Light when L
addressed Kira like the mass murderer was listening with separate
ears, or a separate mind and maybe he was. Maybe. Right now Light
didn’t care he just wanted the truth and he wanted to hear it
from L. “The truth is I am not immortal, or invincible, I have
a weakness just as every living breathing being.” For the first
time ever Light felt his heart twist for the detective and he wanted
to reach out and touch him, comfort him. “I’m a vampire.”
L said the word as if it were a veiled poison taken shape as
something irresistible waiting to infect the teen but thanks to Ryuk
Light had already deducted as much. He still took a step back in
surprise and disbelief, but told himself if there was such a thing as
a death note and a death god, then vampires too had to exist.
“How, how is that possible?” Light wanted to press his
hands to L’s face, make his fingers like unforgiving vines
invading the privacy of the others mouth and feel the prick of those
sharp canines.
“What?” Forget wanting to feel the sharpness of
the teeth Light wanted to pull them out and shove them down L’s
throat. He had never met anyone as difficult as this man, it was kind
of annoying.
“How did you become this way.”
“I became this way through a series of events that played
out after you entered my life.”
“You are blaming me?”
“No, Light-kun misunderstands. I am merely answering his
questions.” The younger one shook his head deciding to step
closer to L, though the detective made notice of it at all.
“What I mean to ask is how did this… are your parents
vampires? Is that why Lenore can not die by the methods you stated
earlier?”
“Hmm.” L looked up at the night sky his eyes closing
momentarily before he began speaking again. “My father was
human, but my Mother she is a full blooded vampire and when I was
born that made me half of each.” Which meant the man had always
been half vampire, the facts were hard for Light to accept.
“So the deal you made with Ryuk…”
“I merely took a stab in the dark when making the deal with
Ryuk. I figured that if I gave him my life it would strip away the
rest of my human years, my mortality and it did. With my human side
half gone that leaves nothing but the undead part of me.” Light
felt the impossibly heavy weight of the sentence and wanted to help L
carry it somehow. He wasn’t sure why he felt this way or what
was bringing about these uncomfortable feelings except the thought
that maybe L would be able to understand him a little better now. Not
that he was counting on it but one could hope.
“Why would you do that?”
“To keep you,” Finally turning, he glued dark soulless
eyes on Light taking the one step that divided the space between
them. “alive.”
Light knew he had been L’s weakness for sometime now but
this, this felt bigger than both of them and far more powerful. He
could barely believe the investigator would relinquish his human
years so easily. “It is harder to control than I first
anticipated.” Light found his hands yearned to comfort L’s
shoulders, so he placed them there and squeezed gently. “I feel
I understand Kira much better now.” That one sentence almost
caused Light’s long fingers to break the bones beneath them. L
understood that vicious part of him now, that was all Kira needed to
hear to spark to life. That was all Light needed to hear to cause an
implosion in his mind. “I have this insatiable hunger that even
when fed it’s still there crawling beneath dead flesh begging
me for more.” Although Kira raged with sick delight Light
didn’t want to incite this cryptic talk. He didn’t want
the detective slipping into a dark hole where everything the man had
worked so hard not to be or become was swallowing him up and making
him become the monster he obviously felt he already was. How horrible
the investigator must feel.
“You did all that to keep me?” L grinned so
softly at him it was like the peeking of a storm cloud that never
released the rain.
“Alive.”
“Alive?”
“To keep you alive.” He deftly pulled something
shiny out of his pocket, candy no doubt. It was nice to see the
detective had not lost his sweet tooth through this ordeal. “It
seems that is not enough.” Light disagreed the worst parts were
over for now, weren’t they? All they had to do was bide their
time for awhile and it would be totally safe again, that is until
Kira got bored, which was now because Kira was always bored. The
irate killer itched and scratched at the darkest parts of his mind
demanding free roam over his whole brain. With this newfound
information Kira seemed pleased enough for now, probably
devising plans to get rid of the detective or join up with him and
rid the world of all evil-doers as they became a force no one would
or could reckon with. That sounded freakishly romantic to him and he
knew he was doomed for being so disturbed.
“I don’t understand, I thought-”
“I seemed to have left out one vital equation, my Mother.”
The younger one half nodded in disbelief, not that L knew his nod was
one of disbelief.
“Your Mother? What does she have to do
with me?”
“Everything. Being Kira is more dangerous than you might
think-”
“No, I never underestimated the danger L, I was shot at
numerous times-”
“My Mother,” He spoke louder than normal to represent
the annoyance he held for when people interrupted him and let his
eyes bore into Light’s. “she has lived for a little over
a century, yet she is not invincible. Her immortality is simply
derived from the blood of a god. She has drained the blood of one god
and the blood of one god has given her a century of life.”
“The blood of a god…?”
“Every time a death god’s death note finds it’s
way into human hands it causes them to be fused with a certain entity
that gives a vampiric being a century of life and makes them into a
stronger supernatural being.”
“Let me guess, she wants my blood now?”
“Indeed.”
“I see.”
“Mmm, yes and any vampire that feeds off of her also
benefits from the effects of the gods blood.” This was
definitely not good and for a moment Light questioned L’s
truthfulness. Maybe the investigator had wanted him alive just to
serve this purpose, to feed him to his Mother. But… no L was
not like that, deep down Light knew that, he felt it. He saw the way
the detective looked at him. The way L seemed to do anything within
his power to keep him safe and the man had a lot of power, even with
it all he did not remain unscathed. Why would L want to give up so
much for him, if not for justice, if not to turn him over to the
judicial system? What more was there? Was it love? Did this
seemingly emotionally stunted man actually have such strong feelings
for Light? It was something he didn’t want to fully delve into
now, there was already too much going on.
“How long do vampires normally live?” How long will
you live L?
“Much like a human it varies. A vampire is a cursed being,
cursed by the sun doomed to walk the night and feed off living
creatures. They are fragile when born, yet they can be become
practically invincible. Most that are turned will die but the ones
that seek to live will live because they will do all that is
necessary to continue releasing false breath. When faced with death
no one wants to greet it formally. Without the blood of a god a
vampire has fifty years of life and with just a drop of blood from a
god they gain a decade of life and if they drain the whole body a
century.” Didn’t L want a decade or century of life,
didn’t he want Light’s blood in his mouth, his hot lips
on his skin?
“Did the fact that your Mother wants to add another century
to her life completely slip your mind?” Light did not buy that
for one minute, something that huge one did not forget, especially
one like L. The detective obviously found no answer suitable enough
to share with Light because his lips never moved to give an
explanation. “I think maybe you knew your Mother would come
after me all along and maybe you had this outcome planned.” It
made the most sense to Light. L faking his death with the hope that
the world would think he was dead, including his own Mother.
“As dangerous as Kira is I still wish for him to be safe.”
If that sentence wasn’t insanity in a box he didn’t know
what was, but he knew L meant it as twisted as it was.
“What about me, what about Light?”
“Didn’t you claim to be one in the same?”
“People change, thoughts change…”
“Light will be safe, do not worry.”
He smiled as his long arms enclosed themselves around L’s
almost frigid body. “We both seem to have ugly beings trapped
under our skin.” He laid his lips on L’s forehead and
pressed them firmly to the pale skin as he spoke softly, “You
know, someone once told me we were perfect for each other.” No
words seemed truer than those did right then. It almost didn’t
matter that the spoiled teen didn’t get to see L’s teeth
there was time and he would see them sooner than later.
“Light doesn’t happen to have some hot chocolate?”
L was probably cold and was most likely ready to go on. That didn’t
stop Light from thinking about hurtling L off the roof into the busy
night, but knew he’d have to throw himself too because he
didn’t want to let the man go, not yet anyway.
“Was it your intention to ruin the moment?”
“The moment will last as long as we let it. We control the
moments they do not control us.” L finally smiled and it made
Light want to pull him closer though there was no more room to do it.
-o-
From his cracked stone perch on the roof he watched like a
concrete gargoyle absorbing everything under the nights cloak and
Ryuk crumpled his long wiry fingers into fists.
TBC…
A/N: Finally a chapter with a little more Light and a little less
Kira infecting his thought and words.
p.s. If you have not noticed English is not my native language,
lol. That is why many sentences may seem confusing. Anyway, I just
started watching the English dubbed Death Note and I have to say I
like Light’s Japanese voice better, but L’s English voice
is HOT, so hot.
