The two intelligent men stepped from the car and out into the chilly darkening air of their destination. Ryuuzaki leaned back inside just enough to pay the man. “No, sorry, I don’t accept this,” the man shook his head.
L smiled softly, “My apologies. I had forgotten not to use yen here.” He handed the man a twenty-dollar bill instead. The man accepted the money and took off as soon as the door was shut.
The Yagami boy stared into the distance, his mind overwhelmed. Ryuk was floating nearby, upside down out of boredom. Not a single word had passed between the men during the entire end of the fifteen-minute drive. Ryuuzaki turned to watch his suspect. The older man waited calmly for something to happen, but Raito hardly even blinked.
“I am very worried about you, you know.”
“Wh-what?” Raito finally met the detective’s eyes.
“You have said nothing in a very long time now. It seems every time I do not say something mean or snide towards you, you slip away into this disconcerting silence. It is strange. I could call you a three legged, blue butt baboon, and I would not feel so horrible as I do now after having been kind to you,” L lifted his thumb to his lips, “I… I do not know why you are being so quiet, and . . . I do not enjoy not knowing things.”
Raito shook his head, before shooting one of his calculated false smiles at his so-called friend, “I apologize, Ryuuzaki. I’m just a bit tired. We have done a lot of traveling today. I’m just not accustomed to all this moving about like you are. Don’t think too much on it. Come now, if you sit here wondering about me for too much longer, you’ll miss out on Halloween altogether.”
Ryuuzaki pulled the wrappings from his costume down further over his right eye. He had gotten special contacts for both himself and the teenager to give them a more death god-like appearance. He opened his mouth to say something to the younger man, but suddenly a group of brightly costumed kids raced past them on both sides.
“Watch out!”
“Comin’ through!”
“Move it!”
Raito growled under his breath, “Kids these days… they’re such brats.”
A very young girl, dressed in a pink princess outfit suddenly raced up beside them, “Hey! Wait for me!!” She suddenly noticed the two men, “Oh! Excuse me! Sorry about my friends, they’re just excited. Please don’t hold it against them.” The child smiled kindly up at them, before returning her worried gaze to her swiftly disappearing companions. “Oh! Come on! Wait up!!!” She raced off, pausing just long enough to wave over her shoulder, “Great costumes! Happy Halloween!”
“You forget, Raito~kun. Not everyone is filled with evil and malice,” Ryuuzaki added with a slight air of superiority.
The Yagami boy turned to say something hateful, but paused, “Ryuuzaki…?”
“Hm?”
“Did you actually get your ears pierced for this costume?!”
“Of course.”
He was answered with only the guffaws of a brilliant young man and a death god, one of which he could not hear.
