On the blue ocean

Part 3

Year 2716½.

As Arthur came back to consciousness, he was laying in a soft bed being rocked back and forth like a child in its mother’s arms. He blinked slightly with the eyes, before slipping back underneath the covers with a soft smile.

“A dream,” he mumbled, “silly old man, just a dream.” He sucked in air and let it out again in a relieved sigh.

He’d been having troubles sleeping in the last few weeks. He’d told himself that the reason was the upcoming meeting about global warming. Every nation was staying up ‘til late reading the newest of the news on the internet, making sure they were updated before giving their speech a finishing touch. But all that missing sleep! No wonder he was starting to get these kind of dreams.

“Like Alfred would ever hit me,” he snickered in a tired voice and curled up into a small ball underneath the sheet.

Fuushh.

A whistling sound started somewhere in the back of his mind, but quickly grew in sound into a loud, roaring thunder, and before Arthur had the time to even open his eyes, the roof above him crashed, and bits of tree hammered down onto his bed making it crack in two. Arthur yelped as he was thrown to the side, slamming his shoulder against the floor as he flustered tried to get up.

“What the…?” That’s when he realised that either he was 1) still dreaming, 2) on his way to a very, very bad nightmare. And though he wanted the first to be true, every logic thought in him was telling him that it was the second one that was going on, and as he turned to face the window, all he saw outside was ocean. The deep-blue water stretched towards the horizon, and beyond the horizon, and everywhere he looked. “This can’t be good..”

“Sir Goldecker!” The door to the room was slammed open, and the head of a bald man poked in. “Sir Goldecker, are you ok-…” His voice died out as his gaze fell upon Arthur. Arthur straightened up and tried to look decent, despite the awkward situation.

“Hello good man,” he heard himself whisper and smile slightly.

“You..” The man’s eyes widened, and he leapt from the room, screaming: “Kirkland! Captain Kirkland is in here!”

Arthur would have run after him, but just seconds after the man had left, another whistling made him stiffen, and a crash shook the room again, and he head screams from all around him.

“Oh God, oh God.” Arthur sank down leaning his back against the wall as he hid the face in the hands. “Oh God, this is hell, this is hell. Wake up, Arthur, wake up!”

What was going on? Arthur’s brain was working to find a logic explanation, but at the same time it was shutting down, not wanting to accept the situation. He started rocking back and forth as painful screams were all ringing in his ears. He could hear the roof break just metres from him, slam against the floor, and furniture tipping over. A painting slipped from the wall beside him and slammed to the ground, hitting his shoulder in the fall.

“Oh God!”

“Look at this fellow.”

Arthur slowly raised his gaze at the sound of another human being. As he looked up, two men was standing in the doorway, looking at him. The one in the front had black hair and a dust beard, the one behind him was slightly taller, bald and with a thousands scars crossing his face. He smiled slightly.

“Wow, he does look like our captain, eh?”

“Yea, but Kirkland has never acted that cowardly.”

Arthur’s vision blurred up in tears, and he stumbled his way to the corner on all fours. The men starting laughing with raw voices.

“Damn, he’s scared!”

“Don’t be scared, kitten,” the tallest one whispered as he started walking towards Arthur, snapping the fingers in front of him, “come here, kitty kitty.”

“Go away,” Arthur whispered, lower than he wanted to, “you… you have no idea with whom you are dealing!”

“Oh, we’ll find out soon enough,” the black haired assured him as he kicked the door shut. “Wait, we haven’t introduced us, now have we? How rude.” He stood up straight and crossed the arms, flashed a gold-teeth as he presented: “We’re Jim and Darrel from The Red Diamond, pirates from the crew of captain Kirkland.”

“Pirates?” Arthur’s lips curved up into a shaky smile. “This just isn’t true… Please, this just isn’t true…”

“He doubts us,” the tallest, Jim, grinned and leaned down to grab Arthur’s chin, “now, let’s show him just how real we are.”
