Akira’s heart was beating rapidly in his chest as Jenny drove as a fast as she could down the crowded road. In his hands, there as a list of all the trainers with rare Pokémon who went to the Sector 5 Pokécenter. The top five names were highlighted, those were the ones Jenny and Akira had been assigned. There were other teams going to the rest, and teams going to the other sectors to makes use they hadn’t been infiltrated.
They pulled up to the first address and Akira got out of the car. He and Officer Jenny walked to the front door and she knocked swiftly. There was a holler form inside the house telling them to wait, and much fumbling before finally the door was opened.
A rugged looking man opened the door. They could here music blasting from one of the rooms and there were many people in the hallway mingling. “Look, the music isn’t even that loud. Can I just get a break, dudes?” He asked, his hand running through his hair nervously.
Jenny shook her head. “We aren’t here about the party, Sir. Could you step outside; we want to talk to you in private if it’s possible.”
Confused, he nodded and stepped outside, shutting the door to his house. “Now, what’s this about Officer?”
Akira was the one who spoke first, “You are Noah Letters, correct?” After he nodded, the young boy felt a small twinge of relieve. They had gotten to this house in time. “You own a Drapion?” After the second nod, Akira looked at officer Jenny.
“I’m going to request that you hand over the Pokéball that is supposed to contain your Drapion. We have reason to believe that your Pokémon was stolen and replaced with an Electrode who will use Explode was soon as it is released.” Officer Jenny explained as gently as she could.
The man stood with wide eyes for a moment before he nodded, handing over the Pokéball from his belt. “Are you sure? How could this have happened? This isn’t about the explosions on the news, is it?”
“I’m not at liberty to disclose such information at this time.” Officer Jenny spoke slowly, looking around. “May we use the field behind your house, sir?”
“Yes, yes of course.” He led them into the large field behind the row of houses. Once the were far enough away, Jenny reached down to her belt and pulled out one of her Pokéballs.
“Go, Bayleef!” The Pokémon appeared in a red haze and shook it’s body, then smiled to it’s trainer. “Ok, Bay-bay. I’m going to put this Pokéball down. I want you to use reflect to create a dome around it. Leave enough room for you to use a vine whip to press the button to release the Pokémon.” Bay-bay nodded and Jenny set the Pokéball down, allowing her Pokémon to get to work.
Once done, the Bayleef released the Pokémon from the Pokéball and, as suspected, there was an explosion contained by Bay-bay’s reflect. They wrapped up the meeting and took the fainted Electrode with them after they left. Akira sat in the front seat frowning, his eyes closed as he thought. This must have been some kind of gang related attack; it was too organized to be the work of one person. But that was the thing about gangs - they weren’t this well put together, not the ones in the area at least. “Have there been any shifts in the gangs lately?” He asked Jenny, his eyes still closed, his hand resting on his Pokéball belt. He didn’t want to have to use the Team. He knew; however, that if it came down to it, he would do what was needed.
The Chief pursed her lips, thinking, and shook her head, “No,” She then spoke, realizing he was meditating. “No changes in size, territory, or leaders that I can remember.”
Akira frowned. “Then it’s a new group with a highly intelligent leader. Considering the victims of the crimes, he is a male, 30-40 years old, and a narcissist. He will be demeaning, over baring, and always think he is right.” He paused, thinking, before adding, “He will have trouble making friends, and will have no family. He wants to challenge us, and he thinks he cannot lose.” Akira’s eyes opened as the car stopped, pulling up to the next house. “He has thought of everything, and is expecting my arrival into the case. But, being a narcissist, he likes the fact that I am here, so he can prove he is ‘better’ then me.” He turned and looked at Jenny. “Remember what I just told you, tell the others, but do NOT release the profile to the press.”
Once more they found the Pokémon to have been exchanged, and once more, they had saved the trainers from harm. The elderly woman was left distraught over the loss of her Pokémon, but the pair promised to find and return it to her. They had hunted down the next too and had just pulled up to the fifth and final person’s house when the sun was starting to set over the horizon. They got out of the car and walked briskly to the front door. Jenny knocked and they waited for at least en minutes before a man answered.
“Yes?” He asked in a gruff voice.
“I am Police Chief Jenny,” The woman started, looking down at her list. “I am looking for Kathryn Schmitt?”
Instantly, the man’s eyes grew concerned. “She’s my daughter. What’s wrong?”
The two exchanged a look. “Where is she at the moment, sir?” Jenny pressed on, growing concerned herself.
“She went to a friends house about an hour ago. They were having a party, and she was going to show her new Aggron. I bought him for her a few days ago.”
Akira’s face paled. “We need that address. Now.” They got the address, but it was far away - and rush hour had just started. “Going to have to fly.” Akira growled, reaching for a Pokéball from his belt. “Go, Malice!”
A Salamence appeared before them, tall and proud. He shook his stiff body and roared with his unused lungs for the first time in a while. His bright red wings stretched out far, his span 12 feet long, and his dark blue fur glistened in the setting sun. He turned his blazing red eyes towards his trainer, and Akira pet his head gently, standing on his tip toes just to reach it.
“Let’s go!” Akira called, jumping on it’s back, “Head north east, we need to get to Yule road.” Once more, the creature let out a magnificent roar and dove upward into the sky, making Akira clench his tiny arms around it’s powerful, vibrating throat. “As fast as you can, Malice. The girl’s life depends on us.” Malice murmured and took off faster, narrowing his body and flying over the city as if it were nothing. The houses all blurred together, and the wind whipped through his hair, making his ears ring. He had missed this though - flying with his Pokémon. It had been a long time since he obtained his first Pokémon - a Totodile named Elsie. The two had been the best of friends, and much, much more; they survived during the worst of times together, formed a team, trained hard, and became the best. “There! Dive!” Akira shouted, noticing as the house came into view. A group of girls were in the back yard, all surrounding the intended victim it seemed. Malice went into a dive, his wings folded, and Akira watched in horror as all the girls stood back as Kathryn reached for her Pokéball. “No!” Akira shouted, trying to get his voice to carry over the wind. Some of the girls noticed him, and ran his way, pointing and looking in awe. They were far enough away from the blast to not hit them, but Kathryn was still too close. She called something out and threw the Pokéball towards the woods, yelling for her Aggron.
Malice and Akira immediately had the same thought. As the reached her, Akira reached out, gripping a hand in her shirt and hoisting her up. As soon as his fingers touched, Malice climbed as fast into the sky as he could, ignoring the girls kicks and screams. She froze, however, when an explosion erupted under them, making Malice twist and bend to avoid flying debris. A large, sharp rock, flew their way and while Malice dodged it with easy, Akira fell forward and it slammed into his shoulder, making him cry out and almost drop the girl he was holding onto.
They landed some feet away, Akira setting the 13 year old girl down gently on her feet before hopping off his Pokémon himself. “What is the problem with you!?” He growled at the crying girl, “Don’t you watch the news!?”
The girl sniveled and hid her face from view, rubbing her eyes. Rolling his own, Akira turned away from here to see if there wee any casualties. Luckily, none could be found. He had just finished taping off the area and getting the girls behind the line when Jenny showed up, her patrol car’s sirens blaring. She rounded a corner and came to a skidding halt in front of the house, before running towards him. “Is…everyone…ok?” She asked, huffing.
“Yeah, everyone is fine.” Akira said in a tired voice, patting Malice on the head. The Pokémon whimpered at the touch and Akira furrowed his brow. “What’s the matter?” He asked gently. After a second the dragon lifted a leg and the young boy noticed a large gash on the soft underbelly of the beast. “Malice…” He sighed. “Return, Malice. We’ll get you to a center.” He returned the Pokémon, his hand gripping his own shoulder, which throbbed in pain. “Think I need an ambulance.” He whispered to Jenny, pulling his hand back to stare in morbid fascination as a gooey red substance covered it, staining his smooth pale skin. He could feel the blood running down his should, over his arm, dripping on the ground. He had never had a wound of this caliber - bruises, broken ribs, never blood though. His vision started to go black and his knees went weak. He caw with blurred eyes Jenny step towards him, holding him up before his vision went black.

The first person Akira saw when he awoke was not a person at all. It was a green and yellow, snake like creature with a green leaf like tail. It was small for a Snivy, but that was acceptable, considering it had been born only hours ago from the egg given to Richard. Akira stared at her, and she stared at him, neither moving. Then, his eyes drifted to the right as he heard a clanking nose, and saw Richard standing in the door way, a forgotten can of soda had fallen to the ground and its contents were spilling onto the tiles. The boy’s eyes were wide, focus, full of emotion for the first time since he came to live with Akira. “He’s awake!” He shouted before running towards the bed and grabbing Akira, pulling him in close for a hug. His breathe was hot on Akira’s face and he smelled of day old coffee and stale cigarettes. He was muttering something that sounded like ‘thought you would die’ and ‘never been so scared’.
“Calm down.” Akira wheezed out, hugging the older boy back, “I’m going to be fine.” He dropped his arms as he saw his mother come into the room, tears in her eyes. “Mom, don’t cry. I’m fine. Honest.”
After a few hours, he was discharged from the hospital, drugged up on pain meds and his shoulder bandaged. He slept the entire way back to his apartment, and when they arrived Richard carried him inside, his mother following close behind. He was dizzy, and out of it, trying to think. He had a nagging feeling at the back of his mind that there was something he was supposed to be doing. It wasn’t until Richard was laying him down in his bed that a thought struck him, “The case,” Akira spoke softly, “Is everyone ok?”
Richard looked down at him and nodded. “Yeah, everyone made it safe. I’ll get Jenny to tell you in the morning. For now go to sleep.” The older boy set Akira’s Pokébelt down on his desk by his bed. “We had your Pokémon healed at the center, don’t worry. Just sleep.” Richards voice was firm, unwavering. Akira merely nodded and watched him go before drifting off to a fitful sleep.
The ten year old awoke a few hours later, just before the sun was supposed to rise once more. His head cleared slowly as he blinked the sleep from his eyes. He lay for a few minutes, thinking. ‘Who could this be? And how did they get so many Electrodes?’ He pondered for a moment when a thought struck him. Last year, the city’s power plant had been broken into, and over 2 dozen Electrodes had been stolen. Akira himself was not assigned to the case though, the reason why he didn’t realize it sooner. He sat up in his bed, wincing and holding his shoulder for a moment. He grabbed a shirt (he hadn’t realized Richard had taken it off) and threw it on before reaching for his Pokébelt.
Akira opened his bedroom door quietly, poking his head out to make sure no one was awake. When satisfied, he tip-toed down the hall and passed the kitchen, making his way to the door. He cast one look back into his dark apartment and - as a after thought - he went into the living room, writing a simple note, explaining he needed to check out a previous crime scene. When finished, he left the apartment, intent on reaching the power plant before day broke.

A/N: Sorry this chapter is so short, and took so long. Things have been crazy over here. I’ll post the next chapter within a few days, I promise. I really wanted the next one to stand alone, that’s why this was short.
