Potential Threat
After the incident resulting from the thunderstorm, the night had
progressed mostly undisturbed. It would be several more hours until
sunrise. Around this time, Rido would usually be attending a meeting
or preparing for a business trip. Instead, he was laying in bed next
to his sleeping gem, watching with great interest as the boy slept
peacefully. Every so often Rido would brush a stray strand of silver
hair from a pale cheek, or ghost his finger tips over a silver brow.
Even if his touches were subtle, every second of contact only added
to his growing fascination. This child, the boy he had recklessly
taken in, had already managed to change the pureblood's life. And he
hadn't even been there 6 hours.
As Rido lay there, his mind had run through several ways to help his
Zero adjust to his new home. However, the options his mind provided
involved putting the boy in the West wing of the mansion and being
heavily guarded. Just the mere thought of the boy being alone with a
bunch of buff, scary-looking, vamps watching his every move made Rido
grit his teeth. He didn't want the boy to be isolated. He wanted him
as close as possible. After all, Zero was his, and his
alone.
As if making his thought clear, Rido had leaned over the boy's
sleeping body and captured his supple lips in a chaste but possessive
kiss. Rido swiped his tongue across his Zero's lips before running
his fingers through his stunningly silver locks. The deliberate
touches had the boy shifting closer to the pureblood's body, much to
Rido's delight.
With that little motion, Rido's mind was set on the only option he
felt was appropriate. To integrate the human boy into the world of
vampires, Rido would keep Zero at his side at all times until he felt
that the boy was comfortable to wander the mansion without his
supervision; not that he had to, of course. But the option was
there...
-x-
An upside to being a pureblood vampire was that very little sleep was
required to sustain full body function. So after an hour, Rido
couldn't stand to stay in bed any longer - no matter how much he
wanted to embrace his silverette. Having the youth curled up next to
him, Rido would give anything to watch the boy sleep forever.
However, a twinge of sadness tugged at the pureblood's heart when he
remembered the boy's misty amethyst eyes. So unique in color that he
doubted there was another human with such jewel-like eyes. With that
little piece of knowledge, Rido wanted the boy to be at his side even
more than before. He wanted to be able to show of the beauty he had
come to possess; like a rare piece of jewelry placed on display.
No one would have something as precious as his Zero-chan. How
could something so rare have gone under his radar for so long, Rido
wondered.
With day break a mere hour away, Rido went about his morning as if on
autopilot. During his routine, he let his eyes occasionally wander to
the sleeping boy still wrapped snugly in the sheets. For the time
being, Rido planned keep the boy in his bedchamber until everything
was in order. He hadn't had time to lock away young Zero's memories
of his previous life - too much had happened in such a short time.
But that soon became Rido's top priority. He was still in the process
of dressing- and planning on how to go about locking away Zero's
memories and replacing them with well fabricated ones- when his
dormant conscience decided to overlook his thoughts, giving it's
input where it wasn't needed nor wanted.
Those painful reminders of all things lost doesn't need to ruin my
Zero's chance at a newer, happier life. Then, with the hindrance of
grief gone, I could easily establish a base for the boy with simple
compulsion. An assurance that he is safe - and that the people he is
surrounded with are his family - will be the foundation of his new
memories. It was then his
conscience decided to butt in. Of course, growing up in a
house of vampires would not go unnoticed – especially over
time. Eventually Zero-chan would notice the differences between
himself and his 'family'. That is... unless his humanity was factored
out...
Rido's thoughts were soon going in circles and frustration had the
pureblood pacing back and forth around the room. As if on cue, the
sudden low ringing of the desk phone broke his rampant inner turmoil.
In a few swift strides, Rido stood before his desk. Glancing at the
caller ID, he couldn't stop the snarl of irritation that slipped
through his teeth. Snatching the phone from its base, Rido growled
into the speaker.
'I never thought you were the type to pick up strays, Rido-sama,'
The woman's voice on the other end was youthful, albeit smug. The
way she drawled out Rido's name irked the pureblood. Her arrogant and
conceited tone reminded him of a snake, poison dripping from every
word. In an effort to remain as civil as possible, despite his bitter
hatred for the woman, he kept his eyes closed and his tone mostly
neutral.
“What
do you want, Ashling? I'm not in the mood to deal with your childish
antics.”
'I want to sate my curiosity, of course. Why else would I want to
stick my nose where it doesn't belong, hm?'
Deep in the recesses of Rido's mind, he was mentally strangling the
hell out of the woman.
“I
don't see how my personal affairs are any of your business.”
Rido hissed out.
A bout of laughter from the woman had Rido gritting his teeth. He
didn't want to deal with Ashling's meddling, he had too much
occupying his thoughts at the moment. And the woman always knew how
to push him to his limits.
'Ah, but I plan to make it my business. The boy in my vision had
me thirsting for his blood. So much so, that I fed from Lucifer until
he nearly passed out.' Ashling
chuckled, knowing all too well the effect her words had on Rido.
'I'm quite interested in your little 'pet', my dear cousin.' As
she spoke the last sentence, her tone dropped dangerously. Rido knew
all too well that Ashling was planning something... And knowing that
only made his blood boil.
Rido's grip on the phone tightened, his eyes flaring red with rage.
“You
will not
have
him, Ashling. If you encroach on what I have claimed as mine, I will
not hesitate to rip your throat out.” The pureblood was almost
panting with rage.
'Maa-maa, dear cousin, violent as always. But I do find it strange
that you lose your head so quickly over a stray - a human stray no
less.' There was a sickly sweet
chuckle from the woman's end. 'I look forward to meeting
him soon, Rido-sama. Do take care. Adieu!'
Before Rido could object or even respond, the line went dead.
“Dammit!”
Rido slammed the phone on the desk. Hearing the voice of his wretched
cousin threatened to ruin his day before it had even started. Rido
refused to stand and watch while Ashling pulled every string in her
power to get to his Zero. He would not sit back and let her
get her way, not when she aimed to steal something Rido wanted to
keep close, the human boy he wanted to protect... Ashling had always
used her visions to make his life a living hell. From the time when
they were young, Ashling would aim to take all the things Rido held
close: his toys, books, even his siblings were taken by Ashling's
'charm'. But not this time. No. Rido would not let her take
the boy who was sleeping so peacefully upon his bed. No way in hell.
Pacing back and forth was Rido's way of cooling off. However, he was
drawn to the relaxing breaths of Zero sleeping. The calming scene of
the young boy soon replaced the anger brought on by the Ashling
business.
This gave the pureblood a moment to get his thoughts in order. To
make Zero feel at home, Rido had to get the boy a new wardrobe and
introduce him to Kaname, Senri, and the staff. But first things
first, Zero's memories still had to be altered to avoid any problems
in the near future. Raking his hands over his face, Rido inhaled and
made his way over to the bed once again. Hopefully, with Zero's
memories tightly locked away, the young silverette will be one step
closer to being completely his...
Leaning over the prone, sleeping boy, Rido placed an open palm over
Zero's forehead and eyes. With extreme precision and concentration,
Rido located and swiftly locked away the boy's memories of his past
life. The only thing he would be able to recall would be Rido the
night before. Everything else would be replaced with a black haze,
leaving the boy confused without some sort of explanation. It would
almost be like amnesia, just that Rido could access the memories at
will.
As Rido finished concealing Zero's past life, he found that it was so
much easier to isolate past memories while the boy was asleep, rather
than if he was awake and alert. Before he pulled his hand fully from
the boy's forehead, he took the chance to caress Zero's face. There
was no hiding the sad smile that found its place upon Rido's lips.
May 2010
I have never used a Memory Haze on a human before. Yet I couldn't
chance my Zero-chan panicking and leaving my side if he happened to
recall his deceased family.
The mental scarring from the attack has no chance of affecting him
now. But even with all my efforts to protect his frail mind, I can't
help feeling a bit of guilt.
Hopefully I have done something for the better.

A/N:
I
know this is short, and the journals are getting lamer [sweat drop],
but the next one will be longer. Now, Ashling is an OC created by me.
As is Lucifer. You will learn more about them in future chapters. I
didn't want to make Rido a complete Pedo, so I had to add a few
characters to keep him from molesting poor little Zero. ^_^
