“Why do you serve him, Hyaku?” D asked from the comfort of his horse’s back. He had ridden out to the forest that morning to meet the beast.
Hyaku was perched on a stone in front of what was left of a Noble’s castle. It was a shell of a building: sunshine shone through holes in the roof; cavities in the floors were the entries to the vampire’s lair beneath. What was mysterious about the ruins was the fact that the castle itself didn’t look very ancient but it had obviously crumbled and fallen. There were no obvious signs of fire or fierce destruction reeked upon the place. What had caused its end?
You are still alive, then. I may have underestimated you once but I will not again. Prepare to die, dhampir.
The beast leaped at D and for a split second, he could see every sharp tooth in Hyaku’s endless mouth. The next moment he had leaped, drawn his sword, and cut off Hyaku’s left paw so quickly that D had already landed before the blood began to spurt from the wound. A monstrous scream of pain was heard, but then nothing. D turned to see the creature grinning at him.
You think I can be hurt by your petty sword. Ha, ha, ha! And before D’s very eyes, a new paw regenerated and Hyaku was completely healed.
“You haven’t answered my question,” D said calmly.
I am bound to any vampire who calls upon my services; such is my debt to my creator. He gave me life and intelligence and I may do as I please as long as I make myself available when I am needed. It is nothing about this vampire in particular; I am not partial to him.
“Nevertheless, you stand between he and I and so you will perish at my hands,” D leaped for the beast again, but he saw something out of the corner of his eye. A person appeared behind Hyaku and while the monster was distracted with D, the figure, dressed from head to toe in dark brown, plunged a sword into his back. Hyaku howled and turned to bite, but the man ducked out of the way just in time. D saw his chance and aimed for his heart, but the beast hadn’t forgotten about him. He threw his weight toward D so the sword only struck his shoulder. All of this took place within seconds.
“Who made you?” D asked as he pulled his sword out. Hyaku was still grinning, even with blood seeping out of his mouth.
Ask your father.
D barely had time to respond before the brown-clad hunter stabbed Hyaku in the heart and proceeded to cut off each limb starting with his head.
“Grow that back.” The Hunter flicked the blood from his blade. “The trick is not to look in the eyes; he traps your mind that way.” The gruff voice said.
D looked at him fully for the first time. He smelled of horses and freshly turned earth, just as left hand had said, but D had a hard time using his other senses to assess the hunter. It was like there was some kind of shield around the man that kept D from figuring out exactly who he was. It was hard to explain, but D couldn’t get a read on him so he had to settle with what his eyes told him. He wore a loose brown shirt and matching pants; his shoes were small and made from goat skin. A cloth hat covered his head and a dark colored cloth was wrapped around the face so only the eyes could be seen. But D hadn’t the chance to see them before the Hunter took off toward the ruins and jumped through a hole in the floor.
The dhampir looked at Hyaku’s mangled corpse and cleaned his own blade. He soon heard screams of pain from inside and the unmistakable sound of a hammer hitting wood. The Hunter was killing the vampire’s victims. There was a pause and D called his horse that was hiding in the trees. He prepared his mount to leave and when he heard the last blood-curdling scream he mounted and waited. It wasn’t long before the Hunter emerged and without so much as looking in D’s direction, took off through the forest. But D was curious so he caught up with the Hunter and rode beside him as he ran with inhuman speed towards the town.
“Why did you help me before when your business was with the vampire only?”
“Do not follow me,” was all the man offered and he jumped very neatly onto a tree branch and proceeded to leap from branch to branch away from D. The dhampir stopped and pondered what substance the hunter’s sword had been soaked in before the fight. None of the wounds he had inflicted on Hyaku bled.
“A base to counteract with the acidic blood I’m sure,” his left hand offered, “Must have figured it out when he killed the first one.”
“Hmm,” was D’s reply.
When he returned to town, he first went to the mayor, despite the most unwelcome look he was given upon seeing the man again. “I’m informing you that the beast and the vampire have been slain. I will be leaving shortly, so your town can sleep easy tonight.”
The mayor looked relieved but, still suspicious of D, he had questions. “You did well dhampir, but how did you kill the beast? Where are the children that were taken last night?”
“I didn’t kill it, another Hunter did. The children are dead. There were no survivors.” And with that, D turned his horse and headed for the Clemmons house. After Mark took his horse, he entered the house without knocking, and immediately regretted it. Katherine and Dathan were arguing in the parlor and could be heard all throughout the house.
“Why are you so difficult? Grow up and start to take some responsibility for yourself! I am tired of looking for you and you are out in the gardens or riding your horse all day or just gone!” Dathan sounded more frustrated than angry.
“I am not going to marry that man and no amount of arguing will change that!”
“Look,” Dathan’s voice became soft, “you do not have to marry him, just find someone you care about. My point is that you will not even look, Katherine. You and I and great Aunt Margaret are the last Clemmons. We have to carry on or our clan name will die out.” There was a silence.
“Then you carry on with your girlfriend Lindsay. Leave me out of it,” her voice was low and venomous.
“Do you want to die an old maid? What would father have said?”
“Father is dead and you cannot take his place, Dathan!” She stormed past D and up the stairs to her room. Dathan walked in, his expression flushing with embarrassment when he realized D was there. But he pulled himself together and addressed him as if nothing had just transpired in front of the stranger.
“How goes it Hunter?”
“I didn’t mean to eavesdrop. I should have announced myself.”
Dathan wiped his brow and motioned D into the parlor. “No worries, Katherine and I do this every once in a while. I have never met a girl so against marriage. But, then again, I have never met a girl like my sister. She is different, you know.” Dathan sat by a window.
“Yes, I have been wondering about that. There’s something almost… un-womanish about her. No, that’s not right…” D just couldn’t place the odd aura he got from her.
“Aw, you should know; it is right up your alley. I will tell you a family secret. You are a closed-mouth kind of guy; have to be in your business. When we were children Katherine was taken by a Noble. I was seven and she was almost five. She was gone for three days before she was returned. Found her sleeping on the doorstep. Of course, father had kept the whole disappearance a secret while he searched for her and when she came back he tested her. She had not been changed, and yet she was not the same. She was not a vampire, but she did not seem exactly human anymore either. We were not as close after that. It always feels like she knows something. Her eyes say that she is laughing at me, at us all. Like she is in on a big secret or something.”
Dathan had been lost in his musings but the front door slamming snapped him back and he looked at D. “Anyway, what of the vampire and beast? You came back in one piece this time, and conscious at that. Should I assume you were successful?”
“They are destroyed, but not by my hand. I came to give you your money back.”
“What? Who else could have possibly killed them? No one in town, I am sure?”
“Another Hunter showed up and killed the beast while I was fighting it. He then killed the vampires and left. I couldn’t tell you who it was or what he looked like, only that he dressed in dark brown clothing that concealed even his face. I assume he was human and a Hunter, but I am letting you know this in case he shows up later and does damage. He is very skilled so be wary.”
Dathan stood back up. “Oh well, you did half the job. You protected my sister from harm so keep the money I have given you for your trouble. I would go ahead and leave town though; dhampirs are not welcome. But you will always be welcome in this house so long as I am alive. I like you, D. You do not dally with your work and you are rather quiet and reserved. Not many men like that around these days. You were even honest about that other Hunter when you could have just taken the credit for the kill and my money. And you did not hit on my sister, I like that too. I may be trying to find someone for her, but not any fawning idiot will do. She does like you though, or she never would have spoken a word to you. Do you think perhaps you could speak to her before you go? Calm her nerves a bit and tell her how dangerous life out there is? Maybe she will begin to understand how much I shelter her if you tell her about your first fight with that beast. I hate to ask you but…”
“It’s alright, I will talk to her. Thank you for your hospitality during my stay,” and D bowed his head slightly and walked out the front door.
“Why in the world would you agree to talk to some silly girl?” his left hand twitched as he walked.
D himself didn’t know why.
