Kio yelled to the cold skies. He didn’t believe what was happening around Soubi these days. It was better, much better than the last Aoyagi that had been there but this was a totally different ball game. The Zero pair looked at him with slight surprise etched on their features.
“What are you yelling about?” Natsuo asked with a frown. “It’s late.”
Kio looked to them, exhausted and yet still going on for the sake of Ritsuka. Kio shook his head. “It’s wrong. Everything about this. Soubi, The Seven Moons and Seimei. They are all sick and it is Ritsuka who suffers it all.”
“He is stronger than you think Kio. And Soubi is one of the best fighter units in school.”
Kio gave him a withering look, as if that mattered right now. As if it ever mattered when it came to the ways of the heart. Kio sighed, all of them were the same, that school taught fighting, sacrifice and loyalty to the one with the same name but no other. He wouldn’t expect Zero to understand.
“It doesn’t matter. He’s hurt.”
Zero shared a look. “We will go back in a few hours. Soubi sometimes needs his house back. He paints.”
Kio cocked his head then, the anger draining out of him because of the revelation in that idea. Soubi was a brilliant artist, but he only touched the paint in classes. Never outside of it. He was always too busy. Natsuo seemed to get the sentiment for he muttered, “Ritsuka likes it.”
There was no need for anything else to be said then was there? However twisted the command of the elder Aoyagi had been, over the time spent together with the younger, Soubi had fallen, and fallen hard. He did what he could for Ritsuka. And if all it took was some paint, then Kio knew that nothing would have stopped Soubi from doing so.
“What now? Do you really want pancakes?”
Youji sighed. “It was where we were taking Ritsuka before…” he trailed off. Kio nodded and took Zero’s hands.
“Then let’s go. My treat.”
It was a strange thing for Kio to do. After all the heartache he went through with Soubi, to take these two under his wing, even if just for the night was telling to how lonely he felt right then. But Zero didn’t have to know that did they? And when they went back later, everything would have settled. Hopefully.
“We have to bring something back for them,” Youji stated adamantly as he took hold of Natsuo’s hand in one of his own and Kio’s in the other. “I said I would.”
Kio smiled and nodded, sucking on a lolly he had gotten from somewhere. “Of course, lead the way.”
----
The pills went down easier now that Ritsuka was calm, though it was still a struggle to get both into him before he collapsed, exhausted onto Soubi’s chest. Soubi was still wearing his jacket and shrugged out of it without disturbing his sleeping charge. He was at a loss right now. Until Ritsuka got better there was obviously no leaving him, unless he substituted Kio in. Something inside didn’t sit right with that idea however and he gave Rituska a small squeeze, as if to check he was really there. Ritsuka moved his head slowly, his eyes heavy but forcing themselves to meet those of Soubi.
“Hurt?” he breathed and Soubi immediately shook his head.
“No. I’m fine. You should sleep.” He paused. “I love you Ritsuka,” he said and held him tightly, pushing his face into those fluffy locks of hair and smelling the scent that was Ritsuka. That however set off Ritsuka’s alarm bells. He forced himself to half sit up. His hand bracing on Soubi’s chest, the arm trembling with the weight of his own body but he levelled him with a stern look.
“What is it? I order you to tell me Soubi. This is an order.”
Soubi closed his eyes, his face seemed relieved but his body was stiff. Without opening his eyes he slid his hand over Ritsuka’s side, steadying him and then guiding him back to lay on his chest.
“I nearly lost you…and now I do not know what is to be done. To hunt the Seven Moons or to let them go in favour of you. It is not a choice I can make alone.”
Ritsuka nodded. “Line up the pills. I’ll take them each time I wake up. Leave enough water. And go, before they get back to stop you.”
He was weak, barely breathing and his body still shook in pain that he couldn’t feel because of the meds but his voice was steady. He didn’t have to look up to know the face Soubi pulled. Times past had changed him, before he wouldn’t have even hesitated. He would have been gone. Now he loved, he knew he loved and he didn’t know what to do about it. “Go.”
“But Ritsuka. Without me you-“
“I said go!” he half shouted and rolled himself to the bed. “I’m fine without you for a few hours.”
Soubi hesitated, then got up and could be heard rustling before he came back with two glasses of water and a handful of pills. He laid them out in small groups on the nightstand. “This one first, then these, and these ok? I should be back by then.” He turned to go to the door and stopped just before he crossed the threshold. As he turned back he was hit in the face with his jacket, he caught Ritsuka’s fall back to the mattress but he didn’t say anything else. “Goodnight Ritsuka.”
The silence was oppressive. He hadn’t realised how loud Soubi breathed until it was gone, and he was left alone with the pain that wracked his body. He had lied to Youji, to Soubi and Kio. The pills didn’t even help a little, the doctor had told him that the pain was something he wouldn’t be able to avoid if he didn’t stay in the hospital, if he didn’t stay on the morphine I.V. but he pills would cure him quickly, a few days and he would be up and about if he took it easy. He cursed quietly, the word still foreign to his tongue, he was after all a good kid and the swearing he had learnt from the others still felt alien to him, even if it did relieve the anger a little.
He closed his eyes, willing his body to rest, his mind to forget that Soubi was walking out alone, hunting down any lead to the Seven moons he could, and for what? Just because they had attacked him? “It isn’t worth it, Soubi, it isn’t worth it,” he breathed, almost a whimper but it didn’t matter because there was nobody around to hear him.
---
Soubi worried, distracted, stupidly so. Walked almost into the battle before he felt the aura, before he felt the spells. He blinked, took in the four gaping faces that turned to him, arms and legs still akimbo, still fighting even if for the moment the battle was paused.
“Soubi,” his name was breathed into the silence, a girl, cute, not so tall. Black hair and bright eyes, reminded him of Ritsuka and he didn’t like that. Instant dislike. The other, the sacrifice was mousy, also a girl but confident, sure of herself. His eyes slid across to the other pair. The female Zero were supposed to be out of the picture, given up the life of fighter and sacrifice, but Soubi would look into that later. He didn’t know the other two. One male, one female. Unusual but not of too much interest. The school had changed a lot since Soubi had left its warm? Embrace.
“Who are they?” he asked, his voice echoing inside the spell web.
“They are-“ Zero’s sacrifice started but was interrupted
“We are Beatless. We never miss a beat-“
“And we never lose,” the other finished for his fighter. They were cocky, younger than Soubi but the elder of Ritsuka.
“Peas in a pod,” Yamoto said as she rolled her eyes. “We can take them. Where’s Ritsuka?”
The Beatless pair stiffened then, noticed by all as they realised who stood before them. Realised who had stumbled into their spellbattle. “Loveless~” they hissed as a pair. Soubi’s eyes narrowed then, his mind sharp enough to piece together what he knew of Ritsuka’s hospitalisation and the ones who had attacked him.
“No. Call Ritsuka,” Kouya said before Soubi could say a word. “Call Ritsuka or walk away right now.”
Soubi slid a look her way, defiant, not willing to obey her but she continued to talk anyway. “If these wronged him, he deserves revenge, and to be there with you when you take it.”
Soubi straightened up, nodded. “Very well, get information and don’t kill.”
“Wait,” and that was one of the Beatless brats. “Ritsuka…is he…?”
Soubi growled as those words entered the air, as the girl pulled her partner back. “We forfeit!” she yelled and they vanished into nothing. Soubi was seething, not that it looked that way outwardly. In fact it didn’t even look like he cared one way or the other, and if his fists weren’t clenched then Zero might have gone to talk to him. As it was they melted away back into their obscurity and left Soubi there. But he had tracked them. He would return to Ritsuka and then they would take revenge.
--
Youji and Natsuo bounced back into the apartment in high spirits. Kio had bought them pancakes, ice cream and other treats to cheer them up and they had avoided the topics of conversation that would bring them down. But it was too quiet. The place was like a grave, and it didn’t go unnoticed.
“Ritsuka?” Youji queried the silence and was rewarded with a bang from the other room. He went inside, noticing Soubi wasn’t there, but that pills were scattered everywhere, and Ritsuka sat in the middle of the floor, a more than half empty glass of water stood next to his knee and the scattered pills were of every colour. Youji swore, bringing Kio and Natsuo to the room.
“Soubi wouldn’t have left him all the bottles,” Kio said softly as he knelt and felt Ritsuka’s head. He was warm but not overly so. “He must have gotten them himself.”
He pulled out his phone and dialled the hospital, he could be heard talking quickly as he went into the other room. Someone was giving him trouble and he was going to shout. Youji took Ritsuka’s face. “Ritsuka? Are you alright?”
“Need to take pills. Soubi left…”
Natsuo muttered something under his breath and shook his head. He did a quick count of bottles to pills and hauled Ritsuka to the bathroom. “Throw them up!” he ordered as he pushed Ritsuka to his knees. “Come on Ritsuka! You have to throw them up before they hurt you anymore,” he stressed and Youji sighed and came to Ritsuka’s side. He knelt and took Ritsuka by the face again.
“Sorry Ritsuka,” he breathed and pushed his fingers into his small, warm mouth. He pushed them backwards until he felt Ritsuka give a tiny lurch, and everything came back.
“Good thinking,” Natsuo commented as he rubbed circles on Ritsuka’s back and Kio walked back in. He took in the view and nodded.
“Yeah, best way. But it isn’t going to do him much good later on. The doc said if he seems better to lay off the pills and see what happens. They were to help with healing, but if his body doesn’t like it, then he can just rest until he heals naturally. He is out of the woods if he is still alive now.”
Natsuo looked at Kio as if he were crazy but Ritsuka coughed, putting his hand to his head. “Too many?” he asked no one in particular. “Couldn’t gauge it. Sorry.” He shook his head but it was obvious the pills had gotten into his system. He was out of it in the worst way. “Soubi left me,” he added. He remembered that much. “Left for clues.”
