“See father, now I’m one of your NERV liars too!”
The discovery:
Naoko Akagi was excited. Every time she was allowed access to the ‘scrolls’ she learned something new (or something very old) about ‘Bioinformatics’ or a dozen other different disciplines that she was interested in. Some of them didn’t even have names. Yet in spite of her position as GEHIRN’s chief technician, her own access was limited.
They weren’t really scrolls, of course, that was just the code name given to them by SEELE’s symbol obsessed directors.
It galled her that she had to suck up to someone as intellectually inferior as Yui Ikari, who had nearly unlimited access to the sections of the scrolls that Naoko couldn’t otherwise obtain. “It’s favoritism, pure and simple.” Yui had family connections to the Twelve… possibly even among the Inner Five and that granted her easier access to the scrolls than a more deserving ‘outsider’ like Naoko had to beg for.
Naoko had no doubt that a “second rate” bio-genetics student like Yui Ikari had used those same family connections to force Gendo Rokubungi into her marriage bed. “And she probably keeps him on a tight leash, the poor fool. I guess that he better not stray too far from that bed if he wants to keep his position in GEHIRN! He deserves better!”
Take the most recent section of text she was granted access to. On the surface it seemed to deal with ‘iconography’. SEELE was obsessed with the application and manipulation of religious symbols, color schemes and arcane designs and logos applied to non-mystical experiences. SEELE seemed to feel it was as important as the sciences were to ‘human completion’. Well, Naoko had enough sense to keep her opinions on that subject to herself. But in the middle of a section of text apparently devoted to the ‘Final Child’s Ascension’ there was a series of hymns not to be sung or danced on the Last Day. “Hymns not to be sung? Not to be danced!?” Well, she didn’t expect to be she’d be singing & tap dancing ‘Over the Rainbow’ either, so why mention it at all?
Naoko examined the hymns. She tried playing the notes, she tried singing the lyrics, she even tried dancing the steps, but it was impossible. No wonder they shouldn’t be sung. They couldn’t be sung.
She gave the text to Ritsuko, not expecting her daughter to do much of anything with it. 4 days later it was her daughter who pointed out the tones, lyrics and dance steps were bio-chemical notations. The section actually detailed the destruction of learning and memory compounds through the application of specific enzymes. In short, it was the biochemical key to selective brain washing.
The title of the hymn was, apparently, “Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinases II are serine/threonine-specific protein kinases that are regulated by the Ca2+/calmodulin complex…” which should not be used to circumvent free will on the Final Day.
It would never be a title track. And you still couldn’t dance to it.
“Nakagi - CaMKII Enzyme Suppression Techniques” or “N’Akagi Cam-Kill” as Naoko named the procedure (acknowledging neither SEELE nor her daughter) eventually became an important weapon first for GEHIRN and then part of NERV’s political arsenal. She could perhaps be forgiven for not crediting SEELE since they had originally blocked her access… and they were a secret organization, anyway. She rationalized away her daughter’s contribution as being merely “accidental” and more “clerical than clinical”. “Besides”, Naoko thought, “she undoubtedly used the Magi which is a reflection of my brain.” Accidental was a poor description for a process that took the younger scientist-to-be nearly 96 straight, caffeine fueled hours to complete. Naoko had forgotten that her daughter did not have access to the Magi. However, Naoko had been the one to develop the technology beyond just the complete erasure of selected memories. Implanting false memories and chemically controlling human behavior seamlessly, without leaving a trace was all Naoko’s own work. Naoko had a weapon that could remake the world, but the trigger was in the hands of others.
That part of Naoko’s discovery wasn’t used often. It couldn’t be. Besides being a crime against humanity, it was difficult to replicate. It was as much art as science and Naoko only used it under strict orders from Gendo and with permission from Director Keel. Naoko never bypassed the strict protocols about implanting false memories or controlling test subjects without permission… except only that one time.
Perhaps she didn’t believe it would work…
Perhaps she didn’t believe that SEELE would care…
Perhaps she didn’t believe Gendo would find out…
Perhaps she didn’t believe that the only witness would betray her.
Ritsuko was observing (spying) on her mother that one last time she met with her ‘friend’, Yui Ikari. It was just moments before Yui’s accident during the ‘Contact Experiment’ which wiped her from reality. It was such a small change, really. Just to forget a few simple procedures when EVA was activated that first time.
And perhaps Naoko believed that it was the right thing for her to do.
He was sitting in the airlock, trying to see out of the hatch window. The gravel had settled on the surface again to await the next quake, maybe in 10,000 years, he hoped. The ubiquitous dust though, was still like grey smoke. He couldn’t even tell how far into the emptiness he was seeing.
“Thank you Shinji-kun,” she said. If he had been willing to look at her he would have seen the improvement. And the bruises. “Are there any other survivors?”
“I haven't seen anyone... alive. My suit radio is down. It’s been out since the quake.” said Shinji. “I can’t get the radio in here to work either”
“My suit radio is out too. That shouldn’t happen. A quake or meteor strike will knock out the landlines, but the suit to suit units shouldn’t be affected.”
He carefully concentrated on the vastness of nothing. “Well, we were knocked about pretty hard. It’s no wonder they were damaged.”
“No” she said thoughtfully. “The units are tiny and almost totally self-contained. Anything strong enough to damage a suit-comm would kill the person. And even if the comm in one suit died, I have trouble imaging it happening twice.”
Then she asked, “Shinji, look at me, please? It’s OK.”
“No” he said. “No, it isn’t.”
He thought to himself, “I don’t want to turn around.” He knew she was still wearing the sweat shorts she had slept in before the quake. There hadn’t been enough time for her to change into the thermal undergarments usually worn under spacesuits.
He didn’t want to see the pain he had caused her.
He didn’t want to look at the damage he inflicted on her.
He didn’t want to see the accusations in her eyes...
But most of all, he didn’t want her to see him looking at her. She’d know what he was thinking. He couldn’t stand the idea of what she would see on his face. She would know what kind of person he really was. He had thought that someday she would betray him, but he had been the one to betray her. He hated himself. He hated her.
He felt her hand on his shoulder, the hand she could still move.
Health & Welfare Part 3:
“Asuka’s ovulation levels are spiking, indices are positive” said Ritsuko who was monitoring the children’s biometrics. “Eight, nine, ten! Very good, it looks like she will be releasing ten eggs this time.”
Her assistant heard her through the earpiece built into her diving mask. She did not respond, but thought to herself, “Ten eggs, ten babies, ten potentials that will never be born… at least not be born as normal human children.”
Maya knew that these eggs would never have been children anyway. Under normal circumstances, each egg would be ‘shed’ during Asuka’s monthly cycles over most of the next year. She was too young to be a mother anyway. Although biologically she was a fully functional woman, she was still just fourteen years old. Maya recalled the recent conversation with Ritsuko. The drugs secretly fed to Asuka accelerated the development of multiple eggs, just as the drugs fed to Shinji over the last few days accelerated the development of spermatozoon.
“Four eggs last month, ten eggs this month… How many next month, a dozen? Fifteen?” Shinji’s accelerated sperm production would not tax his future ability to procreate. But women had only a limited, lifetime supply of eggs. Would Ritsuko… would NERV leave her any for her own children? Early menopause, cancer and other side effects were possible, even premature death? Then again, it was more likely both pilots would die in battle before then.
“Ritsuko is right.” Maya thought. “Detachment. Survival of the species. I must think of them as test subjects, not children.”
Asuka and Shinji drifted in the LCL tank. Their faces reflected the dreamy state that the memory destroying drugs introduced into the LCL caused. Thoughts and sensations were chemically destroyed before they could form memories. They lived moment to moment, unaware of the past or future.
Maya was also in the tank now, but was using a diving mask and air tanks to protect her from the effects of the drugged LCL. Maya had put aside her reservations. Putting the survival of the human race ahead of her concerns for the Children was not a betrayal of their trust! She was a scientist, no less than her mentor, her ‘sempai’.
And so, swimming towards the naked, innocent children, Maya prepared to betray them.
“Ritsuko will be proud of me,” she thought.
They were in trouble.
Was that a surprise?
No.
There was some good news. There was an adequate food supply. The cabin was airtight. Shinji’s spacesuit was damaged, but could be repaired. There was more than an adequate supply of water, frozen in tanks around the base of the lander/shack/shelter. The recycler/toilet was working, but not up to specifications.
So much for the good news.
The fabric around Shinji’s suit’s backpack air supply connection was split which accounted for the “Hsssssssssssssssssing” slow leak of air. That, along several pinhole leaks in the suit itself which developed during the violent aftermath of the quake... or whatever it was that had destroyed the base and cast them into the dark dangerous cold.
The controls which regulated the gas exchange unit had been damaged. Shinji’s hallucinations had been due as much to the loss of air as to the buildup of carbon dioxide. This could not be repaired with the tools they had, but could be controlled manually. The suit’s efficiency was now severely reduced, but would still be serviceable. The suit had been modularly designed so that damaged sections could be replaced… assuming that the spares were available… they weren’t.
The suit patches and other repairs would hold for a while – the suit was stained with dust they could not fully clean off. The dust weakened the patches.
The water, in ice form, could be melted as needed for drinking, washing and to run the recycling unit. Hydrolysis of water produced oxygen. It also produced hydrogen to run the equipment, the heater to keep them from freezing, the cooling unit to keep them from roasting as the sun rose and set every two weeks.
The toilet/recycler could no longer be operated by one person. Any shyness the two of them might feel would disappear quickly. It’s difficult to retain modesty when you need to manipulate water and vacuum hoses to another person’s genitals two or three times a day.
The solar panels and batteries were needed to melt the ice in the tanks during the lunar night and run the basic survival equipment in the cabin. When the NERV crew originally checked the shelter 6 days before, the batteries were almost 50% charged. The panels were intact except for some minor damage… and of course, the dust. Now the system was at less than 15%. The solar panels should have been visible from the shelter’s airlock port.
Shinji had been staring out the port for hours… no panels were visible.
Health and Welfare Part 4:
Ritsuko entered the tank. She swam behind Asuka and guided her towards the medical table attached to the floor of the tank. A soft web belt around her waist secured the pilot to the table to keep her from floating away, while her arms and legs were left free. Ritsuko reached over and began to stimulate Asuka with her fingers. The physical reaction to the scientist’s experienced hands on her breast excited Asuka. Ritsuko knew that if she stopped, Asuka would forget the sensation almost immediately, but as long as she continued, Asuka’s body would respond. No thought on the pilot’s part was necessary. This was a physical reaction to stimulus. Asuka’s skin flushed a deep rose red, clearly visible across her breasts, up her neck and across her cheeks which seemed to burn. Ritsuko could feel the extra warmth that Asuka’s blush response was generating. She reached down between Asuka’s legs… and signaled Maya to prepare Shinji.
This was a difficult moment for Maya. She had never touched a man (or a boy) like she needed to do now. Shinji was actually the only male she had seen naked… and this wasn’t the first time, though he didn’t know that. Maya had been part of the recovery team that had rescued Shinji on at least three occasions when he had been injured and unconscious in the entry plug. She had stripped off his plug suit more than once. She did that efficiently as part of the rescue efforts to save his life. She was OK with that. But this was different, very different. Besides, she avoided looking at 'that' part of his anatomy as much as she could.
Ritsuko had said before “How do you expect to catch a man if you don’t know how to make him happy!” Maya did not respond. She never expected to ‘catch’ a man. She liked men, she had men friends. Weren’t some of her best friends…? But she didn’t want to catch one. The idea of touching Shinji this way made her mildly nauseous. “At least he wouldn’t be touching me. Besides, he won’t remember this. And no one will ever know… except Ritsuko.” Maya reached around and began to gently stroke Shinji’s penis. Slowly, carefully, so as not to drive him to orgasm too soon, she guided the boy to the table where Asuka waited.
It wasn’t as unpleasant as she expected it to be. His penis was warm and responsive as it hardened and grew in her hand. The LCL had a slight lubricating effect. It momentarily occurred to the young scientist that as she sexually stimulated Shinji, Ritsuko was stimulating Asuka and manipulating the two children together was like having sharing sex with Ritsuko, wasn’t it? Almost?
It was so smooth, his penis, his dick, his cock. She had always thought that this part of a man was ugly, unnatural looking, but it wasn’t she realized. It had its own beauty. As she continued to stimulate the boy, she could feel how his body reacted. The texture of the LCL around him was changing. Even through her diving mask she could smell his musk and taste his sweat. Her own body responded to his excitement, his physical need, his lust. She tried to observe these reactions as a scientist and failed. She had had never imagined that any male, any man, any boy… this boy would bring out such feelings within her.
“The hell with detachment, the hell with science and fuck survival of the species” she thought. “What about me!?!” her mind cried out.
She guided the overstimulated boy towards the other pilot. “That should be me floating over there”
Grasping the head of Shinji’s penis, she slowly rubbed the tip over the Asuka’s labia. Ritsuko spread Asuka’s beautiful young pussy open (Maya knew that in her paperwork she would not use such unscientific terms as “beautiful” or “pussy”. But to her it was a beautiful young pussy, but not as nice as her own… or as nice as Ritsuko’s must be. Glancing at her mentor she had a moment where she knew, absolutely knew, that Ritsuko and her were having the same thoughts at the exact same instant.
Maya guided Shinji’s body forward and guided his throbbing, straining penis into Asuka’s waiting opening. Both children had a moment of shock and confusion. The two cried out in pain-ecstasy as their bodies began to thrust and intertwine. Ritsuko said into her throat mike, “I think we can let them get on by themselves for now. They don’t need us anymore.” And Maya discovered that she was reluctant to let go of Shinji. Then she noticed that Ritsuko was still rolling one of Asuka’s fattened nipples between thumb and index finger. “You first,” Maya joked. Ritsuko laughed gently and with obvious reluctance let go of Asuka and swam towards the exit.
The two scientists stood at the side of the tank watching the children. As they orgasmed for the third time, Ritsuko pulled her assistant to her. “To hell with scientific detachment,” they both thought at exactly the same moment
Lunar sunrise would be in 40 hours.
Temperature would rise by 500 degrees.
“Ironic,” thought Maya. That was precisely when they had been scheduled to touch down back at Tokyo 3.
She wished she could see her sempai. Using her good hand she wiped the moisture from her eyes. “Let’s get to work Shinji.”
