Chapter 4
I woke with a massive start, my back scratching against the bark of the tree. Riza looked up at me as I panted sweat dripping down to hiss from evaporation on the cyndaquils flame.
“what the hell was that?!” It felt so absolutely real, the heat the pain the... I felt my cheek tears streaming down my face. Rizania crawled up along my chest gingerly licking them away as I wiped my other cheek, smiling down at her. I pulled her close hugging her strongly making her squeak a little.
“Rizania. I'm going to make you the strongest there is. I promise you'll never have to try hard to fight. You will wipe away any challenger an never ever be at risk.” I don't know what was coming over me. I never cared this much. Pokemon, while some able to talk, where not much more than willing tools. Sure they were sentient but they never complained did they? Not once. SO why get too close to things that were going to die eventually anyway right?
Yet, here I was crying over a dream where...I shuddered thinking of that image. I could never forget it. I felt like it had hit me in the chest. I clenched my fists. It wasn't going to happen to her. I wouldn't let it. The sun was just rising as we worked to put up the unused tent taking the stakes our letting the fabrics fall on the ground. It made me realize My back was rather stiff. I chuckled nudging the little mouse with my foot making her look up at me.
“Next time we use the tent no matter who comfy we are ok? Tree's aint the most supportive of things a'ight?” She breathed out a laugh and nodded as she went back to picking up the stakes around the ground with her mouth bringing them over as I slipped a band around them putting them with the folded up tent inside it's carry bag. We placed it all into the minimizing tech of my bag as We set off Riz at my meet keeping pace as we walked out the forest onto the beaten path.
It was an hour later I realize we must have been running for a great amount of time from the flock of pidgey, as not an hour an a half later we where in cherrygrove. Smiling I walked past the welcome sign and the start of the protective fences. Was as pretty as I remember it if a little more crowded with buildings an people. Quickly I walked up tot he pokemon center before I hear a man calling out to me. Turning I smile as Mr. Guiden, a family friend, came running up (which in itself is still impressive he has to be about 85.)
“Mr. Guiden! How are you?!” I shake the man's hand. He isn't even out of breath an its as firm as ever.
“I'm great, but your mom sent a package via Rook with your running shoes you forgot.” I blink before looking down noticing my current shoes were a wreck. First of all let me explain something. Rook Is my mother's Pidgeot and one fast flier. Now normal shoes are fine for walking don't get me wrong, but Trainer running shoes are another marvel of technology. Using, like everything else, pokemon abilities they can withstand almost ANYTHING an massive amounts of running heat, cold, etc without becoming damaged and staying rather comfy as well.
“Well thank you so much Mr. Guiden!! I will have to call mom, I don't know what I would have done without these!” I laugh as I take them from his hands. “Now I have to go get Riza checked out real quick, Need me to stop by an help with anything while I am in town?”
“Nah son, I don't need help until I'm gonna be put in my grave you know that.”
“Alright, thanks again you be safe!” With that we go our separate ways shaking hands once again as I smile watching the old man with a small bit of wonder. I walk into the center as There are only a few people. Not many people come by this city this time of year, most Trainers come during the summer on their way to the league an right now it was winter. Which is perfect for me. I don't need cocky people giving me a headache.
On my way out of the city I stop by the mart for some pokeballs an potions. What I find is rather disappointing. The potions are overpriced this season to accommodate for the lack of trainers coming in an out of town. On top of that They are out of pokeballs. With a sigh I pay the girl at the counter for about 5 more potions, making the count 6 so far. But I have what I need so on we went.
“Alright We are going to fight a few wild pokeomn for a bit riz alright?” she nodded once again perched on my shoulder “Then when you seem to have the hang of that I'll see if we can work on getting your body ready to learn ember.” I felt a little more heat come form her as her flame rose in excitement about that. “Yeah after your body gets the hang of ember everything else will come naturally with your growth.”
It wasn't more than an hour off the road that we were in the brush. Riza was scouting ahead making sure nothing jumped us without her knowledge. An lo an behold a small weedle its body round an coiled like an ekan's tail with needles at both ends its orange colored body turning a little yellow. It must have been almost ready to become a kakuna. Its stinger was already rather large as I smiled.
“Let's go riza, take it down!” She lept of me fire burning singeing some grass as with surprising speed she ran at the weedle grass kicked up behind her as she silent leaped over it. The small bug was rather slow as most evolving weedles were. In no time Riza let her body roll on the ground the moment her feet came back around under her using her claws to dig into the ground rushing the weedle from behind as she used he whole body to tackle its midsection sending it into the tree with a screech. Hissing it readied staying near the tree. Confident I nodded at Riza her body a blue an red blur as she charged again. This time the weedle was facing her only this time I realized she had no way to avoid the stinger...
“RIZA NO!! DO-” I heard what sounded like a squeak mixed with a yelp as she collided with the weedle. Its stinger lodged into her side the rest of its body was crushed by the tree. I Ran over as fast as I could. Riza was panting trying her best to stand. It hurt to see her like this as I gently picked her, sitting her in my leap her wounded side up facing me. With tender hands I pulled the stinger free quick as I could not wanting the venom to sink in, knowing already that it was dangerously injecting even now as she whimpered. I tossed it out of sight before getting up.
“Riza I am so sorry, Just hang on ok?!” I held her tight so she wouldn’t bounce around as I ran as fast as I could. My feet pounding the ground, every second seeming to last forever as I knew an felt her flame slowly dying along with her heartbeat. It was my fault, I should have thought about the strategy more before letting her charge. I should have brought an antidote, I couldn't use a potion for fear of closing the access to the wound. I heard my feet but didn't feel them as I just held Riza close to me, I couldn't let her go, not after just meeting her. Not after Feeling a connection with such a unique creature. Not after my promise.
“Almost there Riza hold on hun just hold on!” her breathing was getting slower an slower. I knew she was in pain and it was my fault. If I wasn't so stupid... NO! I couldn't give up, I had to run faster. In all my life to this day I don't believe I have ever run as fast as I did then. In 15 minutes I was at the center, even though the agonizing run felt like days long. I burst in the doors making everyone look at me as I was out of breath. The nurse got up calling for a stretcher immediately Not moment
s later Riza was in my hand for a moment I wouldn't let go unsure if it was safe.
“Sweetheart, sweetheart its ok please we don't have much time” It was the nurse, I can't recall her name but I didn't care I slowly let go of riza her flame dangerously low. When In pain or danger their flame was a good indicator of their health. In battle it would only go out when they used up all their energy, whether life energy or the energy to move, and if they thought the battle was over. The flames were so low. It shocked me to my core. I watched as she was run to the back. A quick heal or potion wouldn't help her. She needed a full treatment. And that could take who knows how long.
I sat there for what felt like days. It was my fault. My decision not to bring an antidote. My decision to let her attack the bug head on. I was a champion in every region number of times. Yet here I was making a rookie mistake. And it could cost me Riza. I let it out sobbing right there in the waiting room. I didn't care what people thought of me. I failed my first pokemon of this journey, I failed to protect her. It was MY responsibility to protect her like she protected me. I wanted so bad to feel her small body perched on my shoulder. I heard noises but I was too out of it to care, I sobbed more an more my head in my hands the tears dripping onto my jeans.
“MR. ARDOR!!” suddenly I was being shaken. I looked up at the nurse who was giving me a strange look. She offered her hand.
“Please come with me, I think you would rather hear this in private..”
