Chapter 4: And why am I guiltily mad?
Sebastian inhaled the smell of the roast meat. It was so wonderful, heavenly… but the white stag… the white stag is gone….
This time it was Hannah Anafeloz who came to torment him.
"Hello… It's Sebastian these days, isn't it?" Hannah regarded him evenly from across the table. "You have the whole demon world stirred up with these dramatic dreams of yours, you know. What in the earth is wrong with you?"
Sebastian looked across at Hannah dully. He did not know what was wrong, but he would not give her or any other demon the satisfaction of saying so.
"Have you heard of Lucifer's Rhyme, Sebastian?"
Sebastian was confused, momentarily distracted from his sorrow over the stag's death. "Of course I've heard of it... what demon hasn't?"
Hannah beamed in pride. "I've solved it."
Solved it? Sebastian grew even more confused. "But what is there to solve?"
Hannah smiled enigmatically. "It doesn't mean what everyone thinks it means."
*
Sebastian found himself alone on his bed, a light sheen of sweat coating his body. He kicked off the damp sheet distractedly.
As the dream faded, Sebastian recited the rhyme from memory.
Blood for a bargain
Your soul for a fee
Love will break the contract
But it will not set you free
If your love is unrequited
It will sentence you to death
But if it is returned
Then you need never more draw breath.
It was a joke, of sorts. Several centuries ago, a rumor had been spread in the human world that demons could be tricked into breaking a contract by somehow using love, though the how was never made clear. It was completely false, of course, and the rhyme poked fun at the arrogance of humans, to think a demon's contract could be broken so easily.
The rhyme offered the naive reader the false hope that love might break a contract, but the second stanza made it clear that the so-called "breaking" of the contract would result in nothing but the death of the one foolish enough to believe it.
Sebastian felt oddly happy as he quickly washed himself and pulled on his uniform. The clue was frustrating, but it was a clue nonetheless. The dream was finally bearing some fruit.
The stag would be Ciel, of course... Ciel... Master... Sebastian did not understand why he should feel remorse in his dream for eating the food that was rightfully his. And oh, it would be delicious... would it not?
Sebastian noticed the light beginning to creep through the curtains. Morning had arrived. Deciphering of dreams could wait. He began preparations for bocchan's tea.

Sebastian pulled aside the young master's curtains to let in the light, and turned toward the boy's bed to greet him and announce today's breakfast.
Something is not right.
The demon was struck by sudden alarm. Something was different to the feel of the room, the sounds, the air currents, the rhythms, something was imperceptibly wrong in a way that no human would have noticed. He crept towards his master, apprehension boiling up within him.
The master was not breathing.
No…
Sebastian sprung into action, trying frantically to think what could have happened. Most likely an asthma attack in his sleep… He had to hope the master could still be saved - if he could not… Don't think about it…
He grasped the master by the shoulders… still warm… good.. he began to pump the chest, trying to restart the breathing mechanism. He bitterly regretted that it was not within a demon's powers to restore life to a human - only to preserve it. He was confined now to methods any other human could use. He felt clumsy, useless, and so angry…
"Sebastian, what in the hell…" murmured Ciel as he awakened to being frantically pummeled by his butler.
Sebastian started back, giving his master an odd look of confused relief. "My lord! You did not appear to be breathing."
"What has got into you, Sebastian? You have been acting very queer for the past few days."
"Sir, you will pardon me, but…"
"Think nothing of it, Sebastian, just fetch me my tea, please."
"…but you're still not breathing."
Ciel frowned. Aren't I?
He took a breath. "Well, people do sometimes hold their breath, you know, while talking…."
Sebastian looked on, concerned, as he readied the tea. It was true, people sometimes held their breaths for a few seconds, but he was certain his bocchan had just spent the past five minutes not breathing, right up until being reminded to do so. Not to mention, the demon had never seen his master so unsure of himself. Trailing off like that - he never does that... What is happening to him? Again, that helpless feeling. Sebastian did not press the master on it. He served tea and breakfast, dressed his master up in one of his many perfectly tailored suits, and removed himself from the room, lost in thought.
A/N: I was quite proud of Lucifer's Rhyme, which I came up with on my own while trying to sleep. All the good ideas come that way.
