The earl and the demon sat in a slightly shabbily upholstered train compartment, en route to Cornwall. There had been rumors amongst the locals of a "ghost ship" anchoring without any running lights just outside of Plymouth Sound. Her Majesty suspected smugglers or perhaps something more sinister, such as human trafficking.
The train hummed along the track at a comfortable clip as rolling fields flew by outside the window, barely discernible and turned an eerie bluish color by the moonlight. It put Ciel in a pensive mood, watching so many people's homes and livelihood fly past him in the night. He turned to Sebastian, about to remark on this, when the compartment lurched and the electric light failed, plunging them into darkness.
Ciel found himself spun about and hurled against his butler's chest, strong arms encircling him, the demon's lower body and legs curled about him as well, protecting him from every angle possible. He felt Sebastian's heart beat rapidly against his back, and the demon's hot breath against the top of his head. So, demons do have hearts…
The boy opened his eyes, but everything was still dark. The abrupt noise was replaced by a sudden chilling silence. His thoughts were muddled but urgent. How bad of an accident was it? followed closely on its heels by … was it an accident?
"Sebastian! Can you see anything?"
Something was wrong with the demon. He was not responding to his master's voice. He was shaking. "I will protect you, my love…"
Ciel's blood ran cold. "What did you just call me?"
"My… precious… one…My only….. love"
The boy felt hot tears splash down on his head, then much more alarmingly felt the demon's body go limp around him, seemingly losing consciousness. "Sebastian!" He extracted himself from the demon's embrace and cast about desperately, beginning to panic, trying to feel something, see something in the empty blackness, to give him a clue. What could possibly cause him to pass out like that?
"Well, hello there, sweetie! Never guessed I'd meet you here of all places."
Grell.
Ciel rounded on the hapless shinigami. "You bastard! What did you do to him?"
The red reaper's effeminate eyes widened behind the frames of his spectacles. "Don't get the wrong idea, dearie - I'm just here to do my job. There appear to be rather a lot of souls that need reaping on this train. Your precious butler isn't one of them. I promise I didn't touch him."
"Well then help him! He's hurt. Something's wrong with him!" The earl hated the desperation in his voice. If I lose him…
"Little one, I'm not a doctor. Rather the opposite, in fact…" Grell giggled vaguely at his little joke. "Still, it would be a pity to see such a fine specimen lost to this world forever."
Ciel glared impotently as the reaper waffled, obviously torn between his impulse and his duties.
"Very well… it can't hurt for me to just take him somewhere safe while I complete my work. He saved you, by the way. If he hadn't wrapped his body around you like that, you'd be on my list for tonight." The shinigami's pointy-toothed grin sent chills down the boy's spine, as did his words. Sebastian…
The red reaper easily hoisted the demon and the boy onto his shoulder and carried them a short way off, depositing them under a tree in the middle of a field. Ciel could clearly see the wreckage of the train from this spot. The locomotive along with five other cars had gone off the track… no, six cars, but the sixth was so crushed as to be almost unrecognizable. Smoke and flame rose from the wreckage. The back cars which had not been affected as much had still jackknifed and been thrown askew from the track.
Panicked people were spilling from the parts of the train that had not been as badly damaged, then milling about, unsure of what to do. Grell had disappeared into the worst part of the wreckage, dispensing the final mercy to those most affected. Ciel could not spot him. Possibly he would not even be visible to a human while performing his duties as a reaper.
The young lord turned back to his butler. His eyes had adjusted to the dark enough that he could make out the demon's pale face against the blackness. His eyes were closed as if in sleep. Ciel reached out a hand to the demon's forehead and felt a moment of pure panic as he found it cold to the touch. He's a demon, damn it all! Whatever this is, he'll pull through it. The boy could almost convince himself things were alright. …but what could do this to a demon?
Ciel began searching Sebastian's limp form for marks of any kind, or breaks in the skin. Something that can do this to a demon… I will need to brace myself for any type of attack. If it truly is not Grell's doing, it could be an angel, another demon, rogue shinigami… who knows what else?
The boy jumped a foot in the air when he heard a noise behind him, but it was only Grell again. The flamboyant reaper wore a troubled expression. "The souls…" He frowned pensively at the unconscious demon. Ciel stepped in front of Sebastian protectively. As if I'd be worth anything in a fight against Grell… he thought bitterly. But the shinigami did not seem interested in harming Sebastian.
"The souls can't be harvested. Someone's… taken them."
"Sebastian is forbidden to eat anyone's soul until he's eaten mine."
"Yes, I'm not Will, you know. I don't treat every demon like a slavering bogeyman. Anyhow, this is different. It's not that they've been eaten. They're being… used."
"I'm sorry, what was that about bogeymen?"
Both the boy and the shinigami started guiltily. "Speak of the devil…" muttered Grell under his breath, as they turned to find William T. Spears approaching from the far end of the wreck.
"Consorting with demons again, I see, Grell?"
"This boy's not a demon, Will! And he needs help, too!" The redhead pouted prettily at his superior, but Will was having none of it.
"Since you're unable to complete a simple soul harvest, I hope you were at least able to gather data for analysis so we can explain the problem properly to HQ?"
Grell placed his hand on his heart, imitating a swoon. "Ooooh, such a slave-driver. So commanding!"
"Did you damn well get the data or not?"
"Anything for you, my darling Willy!"
"I'll take that as a 'yes.' I'm getting you the hell out of here so we can analyze it."
"But Wiiiiiillllll…"
The two disappeared into the night amidst sounds of protest from Grell. Ciel sighed irritably. I suppose I'm not their problem. But just what the hell am I meant to do now?
A dark figure was making its way closer to him from the wreckage. Ciel watched warily as the tall form moved closer. He almost could have mistaken the man for Sebastian in the dim light. He was dressed in a similar way and his hair was cut the same.
But as he came closer, Ciel saw the differences. He felt a sudden irrational hatred for this man who would masquerade as his Sebastian. Idiot! he berated himself. It's not as if the man did it on purpose.
"Thank heavens, my lord Phantomhive, you are safe."
Ciel was enough of a public figure that he was not entirely taken aback at being addressed so. "I'm sorry, I'm afraid you have the advantage on me, sir."
"My apologies. Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Claude Faustus, and you have my undying loyalty… unlike that scum lying at your feet."
***
"William, Senpai, please let's go back! That poor little boy needs our help!"
Oh good Lord… he's addressing me properly. This is bad. Will kept his struggling subordinate very firmly pinned to the office wall.
"First off, Grell, that boy is anything but poor. Second, you can't bloody well save every little child in England. Anyone in your position should at least know that by now."
"But Will…"
"Listen, Grell. Those two are trouble. If you got mixed up with them and something happened to you, I'd never forgive myself."
The red shinigami grinned saucily. "Oh, Will… I didn't know you cared, sweetie!"
William was suddenly very conscious of his proximity to his subordinate, and of his position, holding the younger man's upper arms, pinning him up against the wall, only a few inches between them…
He colored slightly and cleared his throat. "That is… as your superior I am responsible for your safety at all times," he declared officiously and rather ineffectively.
Grell's right leg snaked around his boss's left one, entangling with it sensuously. "Don't be silly, William, darling. I know what you really meant."
To his horror, Will found himself falling forward onto Grell as the leg buckled under him. He smells so nice.. For just a moment, it was the only thought Will could muster.
That moment was all Grell needed. He captured his superior's somewhat stiff lips with his own sensuous mouth, and got to work loosening the fellow up a bit, hardly able to believe his own actions. Look how brave we are today!
Will simply did not want to think. If he started thinking, he would remember all the reasons he shouldn't be doing this, and then he would have to stop. He let the kiss wash over him. He clasped the beautiful redhead to him, moved closer, crushing Grell to the wall, grinding up against him intimately. He plunged his tongue into the sweet mouth, closing his eyes, inhaling that lovely spicy scent of cinnamon and pepper. Grell...
Grell's heart leapt as he felt his boss responding to his advances, kissing him back. He did a tiny inner victory dance. His eyes darted briefly to the door, making sure Will's office was closed and locked. Good. He shifted against his prey just a little bit, letting him feel…
Just as William was about to come to his senses, he felt Grell's hardness brush up against him. He could not help but moan a little bit into the redhead's mouth. "…oh…" He pulled away from the kiss, staring into those fiery eyes behind their flamboyant red frames, trying to catch his breath but only succeeding in getting sucked further into his desire. "L-listen… " he made an attempt to extract himself from the embrace, and failed. "Grell.."
Saying the younger man's name had been a mistake. Both of them could hear the desire in his voice. Grell looked up at him thoughtfully for a moment, then lazily pulled him down for another kiss. To his great shame, he let it happen.
Emboldened, Grell freed his arms from William's slackened grip and began to divest his superior of his clothing. Will broke away from him for a moment and looked nervously toward the door. "Grell, wait…"
The urgency in his voice was sharp enough that Grell let up for a moment, looking up at his lover questioningly.
The shorter-haired reaper looked down at him helplessly. "This is… all wrong."
The redhead rolled his eyes. "Don't start that again, you stiff-necked idiot! You…"
"No, I don't mean it… the way I usually mean it."
It was only then that Grell noticed the look in his superior's eyes. It was not so much stern or commanding as it was… hopelessly smitten.
"I want…" He encircled the redheaded reaper in his embrace. "I want the first time with you to be… done right."
"Oh, Will…" Tears pricked at the back of his eyes. This time, there was nothing mocking about it, Grell really did swoon. He felt like melting. He really does care!
William stepped away from his subordinate and bowed deeply, kissing Grell's hand. "I'd be honored if the lady would accompany me to a ball this Saturday night."
***
After having accepted Will's offer to go out dancing graciously, Grell walked home in a daze.
Saturday…. but it's only Tuesday… how can I possibly wait that long…..
What shall I wear?
Suddenly Saturday seemed much too soon as Grell went through a mental inventory of his closet, coming up with nothing which even approached being adequate.

Ciel found himself again standing in front of Sebastian protectively, well aware of the ridiculousness of his posturing but still unable to step away from the prone demon. He glared at the interloper. "Keep away from my bloody butler."
Claude chuckled at the young lord's futile display. "Yes, I can see why he finds you so attractive…" He shook himself slightly and addressed Ciel more formally. "Sir, I wonder if you would feel so protective toward that wayward demon if you were aware that he was planning to lead you to your death. He intended to break the contract and take your soul without payment. His current state is proof of that."
"And you expect me to trust you instead, just like that? Just because a stranger gives me some story I can't verify? I may look a child, but I've got a bit more sense than that, fool!"
"Oh dear… I suppose we're going to have to do this the hard way."
Ciel found himself unceremoniously thrown across the man's - demon's - shoulder, watching the unconscious Sebastian being dragged behind. He found himself on the verge of passing out from the sudden rush of blood to his head. He tried to stay awake, but decided since for the moment he would be helpless asleep or awake, he might as well get some rest. The young lord closed his eyes and let the blackness overtake him.
***To be continued...***
A/N: Initially, I meant for this to be set somewhere around the middle of Season 1 (that would be why Ciel doesn't know Claude, and Claude has no Alois yet) honestly, though, it went off the canon track completely when I wrote Chapter 8, so really at this point I have to admit I am just using Claude - I probably won't do him justice as I am not his biggest fan… but I'll keep him as in-character as I know how.
Fun fact: Grelliam was originally not even going to happen in this story - I brought in Grell to move the plot forward, then decided what the hell, I'll throw in a fun little office-sex scene with the pair just for shits and giggles… and that's about when things got out of hand. Basically the characters refused to be relegated to the sidelines. What you see before you in the next few chapters is the result of me attempting to tamper in things phoeyays were not meant to wot of. But damn, was it fun!
I don't actually know if Will is technically older than Grell - can't remember, don't care enough to look up - they just seem that way to me, and it makes descriptive dialogue a helluva lot easier, so I'm going with it.
