Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Four
Age 13
When the school bell rang, Rorsh's lilac fur stood on edge. He took a combative posture before you had time to reach out to sooth him. The students around you had mixed reactions - some people were surprised, others reacted in fear, but then there were some who were just curious. After all, not everyone in your world always had the same reaction to pokemon. It was like trying to get everyone to agree to a favorite color - it just couldn't be done.
Thankfully the reactions didn't last long as time marched on. You packed your backpack up in silence once Rorsh was assured that everything was alright. Your classmates moved around as they started out of the door. When you got to the door as well, the teacher stopped you. She looked nervously to Rorsh who, when you stopped, sat down right beside your legs. There was a hint of fear in her that you knew came from being around your pokemon. What you didn't know was why. Why was she so afraid of Rorsh?
"Today I allowed your...pokemon to follow you because I didn't want to cause any more disturbance after the field trip. But the rule still apply. Do not bring them back when you return to class. Are we clear?"
You nodded. It may have sounded harsh but that was the rules. Even though you knew what you wanted to do with your life, more or less, you couldn't afford to break the school's rules. It was a good school, the best in the area in fact. And if you were asked to leave because you couldn't get Rorsh to listen to you, it would reflect badly on your abilities to raise a pokemon.
Once the teacher believed that you were being serious, you were free to go. Rorsh walked ahead of you as the two of you got out of the school. The front courtyard was the next thing to get through and then you were in the town. Once normal business buildings started to surround you and Rorsh, he went back to his normal spot beside
"Where are we going?" Rorsh asked as he kept pace with you.
"To the pokeshop," You told him.
Now where was it again? You hadn't been there in a while. Not for at least three years, when Rorsh had hatched from his egg. You had never really needed to go. The benefit of growing up in a family (with a lot of family friends) of breeders was that pretty much everything you needed to take care of Rorsh was on hand. But you were lacking one thing that you were hoping would please Rorsh.
"What for?"
You looked down at him and smiled. "A brush. The one I've been using for you will probably feel abrasive now."
Rorsh accepted this answer as he went back to staring ahead of you. The sound of his paws against the concrete sidewalk was almost non-existent. It was a different experience to say the least. At least you had been able to hear something from him when he'd been an eevee, even if it was quiet. And it seemed odd that you couldn't hear him now even though he was a lot larger than he had been.
A few turns later and you had finally found the shop. Inside were a few different pokemon and their trainers. But it was a larger store so it didn't feel crowded. You moved over to the grooming section and stared at the selection of combs and brushes. Some were wooden, others metal. There were ones with plastic and rubber bristles, some with wood, and some with metal. There were different shapes and sizes and it was all very complicated. So you started to sort through the different brushes one by one based on what you knew you would need.
"A-hah," you breathed out in relief when you found it.
"Let's go home now."
"In a rush?" You teased Rorsh.
His split tail smacked you on the butt and your mouth dropped open in shock. He trotted with an amused snort towards the checkout stand. You followed behind him with outrage and amusement warring for the title of dominant emotion. Once you paid for the brush with your allowance, you led Rorsh out of the store and out of town.
"How fast are you now?"
"Still faster than you," Rorsh replied in your mind, filling your head with a buzz with his deep timber of a voice.
You stuck your tongue out at him and started running. A flash of silver caught your attention and you watched as Rorsh sped ahead of you with quick attack.
"Cheater!"
By the time he ran out of energy to do that you had caught up. Rorsh might have had special powers but even he had to abide by his body. And thankfully you'd had plenty of practice on the physical realm of things. Once you caught up to him with more energy to continue running, you slowly pulled to a stop. You could see that he was actually panting, still adjusting to the new muscles and speed; the difference in his own abilities. So you didn't say a thing as you start to walk beside him.
When you got home you took a few minutes to brush Rorsh down with the new brush you bought while sitting beside the lake. He laid out over your lap, content as could be. You could feel him purring with every stroke. You paid attention to the new way his fur was laid. Your fingers slightly brushed through the tuffs under his ears and in his half sleep stage he leaned into your touch.
"Do you like being an Espeon?"
Rorsh yawned and stretched. He twisted in your lap so he could curl his legs around your stomach. But there was a feeling of uncertainty in his body along with an interesting flare of joy. You were going to take that as him being as confused about it as you were but at the same time he was enjoying some things.
'Do you like being an Espeon?' you tried thinking in a consistent manner, as though talking in your own mind.
The Espeon in your lap looked up, slowly he sat up and you spread your legs out so he could sit on the ground. He leaned his head into yours and licked your nose. The jewel on his forehead shimmered with a glow as he looked into your eyes.
"I will. It's still very new. But I will."
You smiled and rubbed your cheek against his affectionately. His head went to rest on your shoulder and you wrapped your arms around him. It felt like such a relief that he didn't mind evolving.

The next morning you were woken up by the smell of sugar and cinnamon. Slowly you opened your eyes, only shutting them a few times as you adjusted to the light pouring in from your window. Rorsh lay in his bed on the far wall, still asleep. Or at least he wasn't willing to get up for breakfast just yet. You smiled tenderly at the sleepy Espeon as you got out of bed. Whatever your Mom was cooking smelled absolutely amazing.
So in your pjs you went out to see what was being made. Just in time for your mother to pull a homemade coffee cake out of the oven. Oh you really hoped it was going to be fore breakfast, even if it was one of the most unhealthiest things to eat.
"Good morning," she called out as she set the pan down on the cooling stone.
"Morning," you mumbled as you rubbed your eyes.
"I saw that he evolved into an Espeon," she commented as she shut the oven.
"Uhhm," was your response as you not so subtly moved over to see the coffee cake.
"Were you planning on telling us?"
Sleepily you looked up at her. She wasn't that much taller than you at this point but she still had two or three inches on you.
"Not that big a deal," you yawned.
"It is," she insisted. "It means that you did a really good job at raising him. Not just anyone can have an Eevee evolved into an Espeon without being a trainer."
You nodded. You were sure that it was supposed to be a compliment but you weren't one-hundred percent awake at the moment. All your thoughts were on making your way over to the coffee cake and having a slice. Or the whole thing; you hadn't quite decided. It just smelled too delicious to pass up.
Just before you got to the pan with a knife, your mom stopped you. You pouted as you stared between her and the deliciousness that was the coffee cake.
"You'll get some. Just stop being so impatient and wait for it to cool down."
"But it's so yummy when it's hot."
"Yummy and tongue burning," your mother reminded you promptly. "Besides...we had a surprise for you."
"Huh?"
You leaned down onto the counter, eyes fixed on the coffee cake with single minded determination. You didn't look back up until your mother whistled. And that was mainly because she made a loud noise so early.
When the whistle ended, the sound of four footsteps come out from your parents' bedroom. You turned your head to see what was making it and saw a young eevee, though you would put him at a few months old at least. He had the warmest brown eyes and a slightly darker coat than Rorsh had before he evolved.
You smiled at the little thing and suddenly he was running at you. You knew exactly what he was accidentally about to do as he launched himself into the air at the speed he had picked up. You closed your eyes and braced yourself to get hit by an excited pokemon's tackle attack. But before he got to you, the eevee stopped in mid air. No...he was stopped in mind air.
You opened your eyes to see him struggling in mid air. It was obvious that he hadn't stopped himself in mid air from the way he was wiggling about. You turned your attention to your open bedroom door where Rorsh sat stood, the red jewel on his forehead glowing.
"...did you just learn a new attack?" you blinked in disbelief at Rorsh. "Rorsh, can you set him down now? I don't think he was going to hurt me."
Rorsh didn't take his attention off of the growling Eevee. You moved over to him and stood in front of him, trying to break his concentration. Thinking quickly, you started to rub his cheeks slightly. And as soon as his concentration was gone, the poor Eevee behind you fell to the floor. Though from the sound of it, he landed on all four of his feet.
"Well, that was interesting," your mother said as she got down a few plates.
You could practically taste the coffee cake already.
You turned back around and stood back up to look at your mom. You already had a feeling why the other Eevee was present but you still wanted to hear it from her.
"Am I getting a new pokemon?" You asked.
She nodded with a smile. "Yes. We were going to give him to you yesterday for your birthday but you seemed preoccupied after that field trip."
A guilty smile decorated your face but then as you looked to the newest Eevee it became much more genuine. You loved Rorsh, you did, but it was exciting to have another pokemon to take care of. Another personality to get to know.
You sat down on the ground and held out your hand to the young Eevee. "Hey little guy."
He was on you in an instant. You could feel his tongue pretty much giving your entire arm a bath as you kept him away from your face. And his fur was tickling you. Within moments you felt Rorsh turn around behind you and walked right into your bedroom. The door was closed behind him with a resounding click.
"Sounds like someone is jealous," your mom commented.
You bit your lip as you looked behind you while Eevee cuddled into your stomach. Rorsh did feel upset but you knew that right now wasn't a good time to go talk to him. Besides the less mature side of you wanted him to suck it up - you were supposed to be a Pokemon Breeder when you grew up. Which meant that you were going to have to care for a lot of different pokemon. And he was just going to have to accept that.
Still...you'd talk to him later.
Just after you got this Eevee to calm down. And after you had some of that delicious smelling coffee cake.
