Luffy woke up late in the afternoon on Saturday. The previous night's shift had ended later than usual, and thanks to Ivankov and Bon Clay, he found himself convinced to stay for a drink.
He should have known better; it was never just one drink with those two. Ivankov, a drink genie, always knew how to concoct the sweetest treats to entice Luffy into having more. After a few mudslides and strawberry daiquiris, Ivankov wrapped his large arm around Luffy's shoulder.
"Honey, the other day, I saw a hunk of a man leaving your place. He seemed quite flustered too. What's that all about?" Ivankov questioned with narrowed eyes. Bon Clay glanced at the two excitedly.
"Ooh la la, Luffy, did you sneak out with Mr. Tall, dark, and handsome? He's quite the looker and with those tattoos, I'm sure he's a freak between the sheets!" Bon Clay cooed.
Luffy groaned. Of course, Ivankov saw Law leaving his place. He swore the bar owner had eyes everywhere.
"Oh no, it's not like that! He just had to pick something up," Luffy corrected the misunderstanding. He left out the oddly long held gazes and the cheek caress.
Ivankov and Bon Clay's faces both fell in disappointment.
"What a shame. You need some good loving in your life, sweetie," Ivankov sighed. "Yeah. real shame," Bon Clay echoed.
"Well, I have a date with him tomorrow," Luffy blurted out. Maybe the alcohol getting to him.
As quickly as they fell, Ivankov and Bon Clay's faces perked up.
"That's my boy! If you need some tips, you know where to find me!" Ivankov cheered, raising Luffy's glass with a wink. The man's face suddenly darkened. "And if he messes with you, let me know. I got some people who can deal with him."
"He is pretty hot, huh?" Luffy said with a sly grin. He enjoyed these moments of gossip with the two men. It was nice to have friends who were so supportive and Iva and Bon were so funny.
"You got that right, sister! The quiet ones always surprise you," Bon replied.
Luffy chuckled. Enjoying himself. Leaning his face into his hand, he smiled as the two men started giving him suggestions of sex toys to try and positions he should try with Law. Though initially uninterested in the topic, he listened intently, figuring he shouldn't turn down the wealth of information from his two clearly experienced friends. A few minutes later, he felt his eyes dropping, and Bon shook his shoulder, telling him it was time for bed.
Popping a headache pill, Luffy grabbed his phone. He saw a few messages from his friends group chat which was affectionately named "The Strawhats' after Luffy's signature hat.
Nami sent a cute selfie of her and Vivi in a beautiful grove of orange trees.
"Hard work paid off! We finally figured out how to grow oranges in Alabasta!" Luffy smiled at their happy faces. Nami was a genius when it came to farming and meteorology and he firmly believed she could make anything grow, even in the deserts of Alabasta.
"Nami-swannn! Please allow me to use those oranges to make the most delicious treats for you and Ms. Vivi. I miss your radiant faces!" The chef cooed. Despite his relationship with Zoro, Sanji was forever the ladies man.
"Shut it cook. I'm sleeping." Zoro replied crankily. Luffy wasn't really sure how those two lived together without killing each other, but he was happy for them nonetheless.
"Sanji, please feed me meat. I am hungover." Luffy replied. He missed Sanji's cooking. His mouth watered at the thought.
"Luffy, please make sure you are eating a balanced diet and not drinking too much alcohol. Vitamins and minerals are vital to your body's health." Chopper chimed in, ever the caring medical prodigy.
The conversation continued on over the course of a few minutes.
Luffy: Meatttt
Sanji: Captain, the Baratie will be making a stop in Dressrosa next month. We would love you to come aboard and dine with us. Mosshead won't shut up about how much he misses you!
Zoro: Shut it cook.
Chopper: No fair! I want to see Luffy too!
Robin: Now Chopper, you know your exams are coming up. You can see Luffy in December like you always do.
Chopper: Okay... Sorry Robin... Miss you guys.
Franky: We miss you too buddy!
Usopp: agewyisdjbehw
Nami: ??
Usopp: Sorry, King grabbed the phone.
Nami: Send baby pics, now!
Usopp sends an adorable picture of baby King sucking on his thumb with his messy hair sticking up just like Usopps. Luffy grins at his phone. Kaya and Usopp really were going to be the best parents and King looked just like Usopp-minus the large nose, thankfully.
Brook: Yohohoho what a cute young lad you have there Usopp!
Chopper: Awww he's so cute!
Luffy: Good thing he didn't get your nose Usopp! I miss you guys!!
Usopp: Hey what gives! My nose is perfectly fine. But I hope he looks more like Kaya anyways, she's so beautiful!
Franky: Miss you too, pal!
Nami: Miss you more. Vivi says she misses you too.
Sanji: I miss Nami most!
Zoro: How many times do I have to tell you to shut up curly brow!
Robin: Now, Now Zoro. Don't be so jealous all the time. And I miss you as well Luffy.
Nami: lol she called your ass out Zoro.
Luffy smiled as he scrolled through his phone, watching the conversation flow. He truly missed his friends but was relieved that they couldn't see him now. They were aware that Luffy's journey had taken an extended pit stop in Dressrosa over the past four months, but they didn't pry into why he was staying for so long.
He appreciated that they respected his privacy, refraining from asking too many questions and letting him live his life. Freedom had always been Luffy's motto, and he knew his friends would be heartbroken to learn that he felt so weighed down by his grief.
Later, he planned to message Sanji to inquire about Baratie's arrival in Dressrosa. Luffy looked forward to meeting his friend and savoring the delicious food Sanji was known for.
He was happy to know that Zoro would be tagging along, which he kind of assumed would happen since he had been living in the traveling restaurant with Sanji for a few months now. Luffy wasn't really sure how Zoro ended up there. He thought the swordsman was returning to the dojo after their trip. Knowing Zoro, he probably got lost on the way home, stumbled into the Baratie, and Sanji just let him stay.
Luffy set aside thoughts of his friends and pocketed his phone, realizing he had a few hours before his rendezvous with Law. In need of a distraction, he surveyed his loft, taking in the disarray. Clothes lay scattered in the bedroom, and the kitchen sink bore the burden of piled-up dishes, and wrappers littered the floor. Despite tidying up before Law had retrieved his hat, Luffy hadn't bothered to maintain the cleanliness since then.
Summoning the will to tackle the chores he had pushed aside, Luffy crawled out of bed. While he was mopping, he began to reflect on his dating history, Luffy couldn't recall ever being on a "real" date. The past few years had been filled with adventures on the ship with his friends, interspersed with some drunken hookups whose details eluded his memory. Subsequent solo travels for the next year hadn't added much variety to his experiences.
Acknowledging that this, at 22, would be his first official date, Luffy felt a hint of embarrassment. Shrugging it off, he reminded himself that everyone had their unique journey, finding humor in the fact that his inaugural date would be with a short-tempered surgeon he had accidentally encountered in a park.
—
It was 6:58 pm, and Law stood outside the cafe, leaning on a railing while scrolling through an online marketplace for rare coins. Being fashionably early was a habit for him; tardiness was a trait he abhorred in others and diligently avoided himself.
Dressed in a white shirt with a lightweight black coat and dark slacks, Law embraced the summer evening's chill carried by the sea breeze. As he focused on his phone, a dark head of hair suddenly appeared in his field of vision, blocking his view.
"Whatcha looking at, Torao?" The head of hair belonged to none other than Luffy, who turned to meet Law's gaze. Startled by the abrupt appearance, Law stumbled a bit to the right, away from the railing. The boy was surprisingly right on time.
"Coins," Law replied flatly, clicking off his phone. Collecting was one of his rare hobbies that he barely ever had time for. Sometimes in his brief moments of freedom, he would scour the web for new sales and interesting stories. Pirate gold, currency of long fallen nations, these things fascinated him.
"Cool! Do you collect them or something?" Luffy inquired with a grin, studying Law for a moment. Luffy sported a red short-sleeve striped button-up, cut-off jeans, and sandals. Law couldn't help but think that Luffy's current outfit suited him far better than the stuffy waiter's attire from before.
"Sometimes. Are you ready to eat?" Law diverted the conversation, not eager for Luffy to delve into his nerdy hobby.
"Yeah, let's go. I'm starved!" Luffy nodded with a smile. Law held the door open for Luffy, and they entered the small cafe together.
As he entered, Law was hit with the scent of rich tomato sauces and simmering garlic. Soft, ambient lighting cast a warm glow over brick walls adorned with classic artwork. Each worn wooden table was adorned with a flickering candle, creating an intimate setting. He approved of Bepo's recommendations. The doctor always had good taste after all.
A small blonde waitress gave them a polite smile and led them to a table by the window. Law and Luffy sat down and the woman handed them a menu and explained the daily specials.
Law observed Luffy with a hint of amusement as the man enthusiastically scanned the menu. "I want everything!" Luffy declared, his eyes gleaming with excitement. Law momentarily remembered the way the younger man happily scarfed down his meat pie the day they met and realized that Luffy was likely not a cheap date. No matter, it wasn't like he had anything else to do with his money.
"Order whatever you want. It's my treat." Law replied. After all, this date was his thanks for returning his hat.
"Really? You're so nice, Torao." Luffy perked up immediately at the idea and Law couldn't help but admire his reaction to such a simple offer.
When the waitress returned, Luffy rattled off a list of various types of dishes. Law ordered a simple pasta with white wine sauce and clams. Once the waitress left, Law looked at Luffy with a bemused smirk.
"Wow you really must have quite the appetite, huh?" Law chided.
"You said whatever I wanted! I'm sure you can afford it, Mr. Important Surgeon." Luffy stated matter of factly. Law couldn't deny that statement so he let another one of Luffy's snide remarks go.
"So what's your story, Torao? Are you from Dressrosa?" Luffy questioned curiously.
Law froze for a moment. Such a simple innocent question was not one Law could answer easily.
"I'm not from here. I've lived here for years since I started working at the hospital. But my life's not an interesting story to tell. What about you?" He gave Luffy a simple response and hoped the man would get the hint and divert the conversation to himself.
Law's wish was granted as Luffy began to ramble.
"I'm from a town called Fuusha Village. I was traveling all over the place before some stuff happened and I ended up on Dressrosa a few months ago. Iva, the owner of the bar I work at, kind of just picked me up off the street and I've been working there ever since."
Law could see a glint of sadness in Luffy's mention that 'something' happened. Law wasn't one to press and just listened quietly and Luffy continued.
"I actually used to work on a cruise ship for two years. It was really fun and I got to travel to all kinds of different places with my friends. This one time..." Law observed a fondness on the man's face as he began to weave tales of his adventures from his days on the ship.
Maybe Law was wrong about Luffy. He had thought the dark-haired man had lived a life full of tribulations as Law had but listening to him speak so animatedly about his past he began to think otherwise. There was nothing wrong with that, after all no one deserved to suffer like Law had.
Their food arrived shortly after and Luffy's eyes widened as plates of meat and pasta were placed in front of him. He grabbed his fork and licked his lips before slurping up pasta and shoving pieces of meat into his mouth, much to Law's disdain.
"You know Luffy, you really do need to learn some table manners." Law grumbled.
Luffy grinned, pausing to lean back in his chair. "Food's important! You should know that as a doctor! Plus, I'm starving!" The younger replied before diving back into his meal.
"You can eat still eat food without being such a mess..." Law muttered. He knew from their previous encounter that the boy didn't care about the way he ate and had a feeling that Law's insistence wouldn't change his eating habits.
"This is soo good" he said between bites, ignoring Law's comment. "You know my friend Sanji's food is the best in the world! He's a chef on the traveling restaurant Baratie. This ship will actually be here in a few weeks, we should totally go!"
"Yeah. We'll see." He replied simply. He wouldn't make any promises to Luffy about spending time with him weeks from now but Law found himself not hating the idea of seeing the younger man again.
Luffy stopped himself in his tracks with a blush and Law realized that his statement was insinuating that he wanted to spend time with Law other than this payback date. He pushed that thought aside for later. He actually had heard of the Baratie, which just showed how famous the restaurant was.
Their conversation had flowed effortlessly, to Law's surprise. Luffy continued to weave intriguing tales of his past adventures as Law nodded along and provided his input or comments when required while he haphazardly twirled his pasta around his fork. He had to admit, the food was good. He made a note to thank Bepo for the recommendation sometime.
Law realized that he found himself enjoying the presence of the dark-haired man more than he expected. He couldn't remember the last time he enjoyed a meal with someone with no distractions. His hectic schedule and general lack of desire to communicate with others didn't provide him much opportunity. Luffy was a good storyteller, very animated and clearly happy to share.
He was slightly envious of the younger man's tales and adventures with his friends. When he was their age he spent his time traveling as well, but not for the purpose of new adventures with friends. Law's time was spent tracking down and interrogating Doflamingo's enemies. Those situations dulled the splendor of seeing new places for obvious reasons.
He had no friends to speak of at that time actually, he never had friends until he starting working at the hospital. Even his friends now he barely spent time with and he was yelling at them half the time. Maybe if his life was like Luffy's back then he wouldn't be such a cold hearted pessimist.
"You know Torao, you're a lot nicer than what I thought before. I bet you really do have friends." Luffy broke his train of thought with a light smile. His cheeks flushed ever so slightly at the compliment. No one ever called him nice, and it definitely wasn't true.
"Thanks but I really am not nice." Law responded flatly.
"Okay, whatever you say. Tell me about your friends!" Luffy demanded as he leaned into his palm. Of course, he had already finished his food a few minutes ago. When the waitress returned Luffy placed a second order for a variety of desserts while Law ordered an espresso shot. He really was a glutton. Law couldn't understand how someone with such a small frame could eat so much.
Law sighed. He had a feeling Luffy would keep asking him questions and his friends were the easiest and most normal part of his life to share with outs.
"Well there's a few doctors I would consider friends, I guess. They are good guys but they can really be a pain." He didn't really have a better choice of words to explain his relationship with Bepo, Shachi, and Penguin.
"Oh, is one of them that redhead guy I met at the hospital? He seemed really nice." Law recalled with horror the accusations that Shachi had made about Luffy being his boy toy.
"Yeah that's him. I hope he didn't say anything weird to you." Law sighed.
"No way, he seemed super cool and had awesome hair!" Of course the eccentric boy would think Shachi is cool.
"There's also Bepo, he... kind of watches over me like a mother hen I guess." Law couldn't really think about how to describe Bepo properly. Their friendship was unique.
"That's so nice you have someone to take care of you like that." Luffy smiled, and only for a second Law saw a hint of sadness fall over Luffy's face. He wasn't sure what that was all about, after all Luffy spoke very fondly of his friends. He was sure the man had plenty of people watching over him.
The conversation continued as Luffy asked him a variety of questions and Law replied with brief but responsive answers.
Luffy's spread of desserts and Law's espresso arrived shortly after. Law inhaled the smell of the freshly brewed coffee. Law finished the drink with a gulp and Luffy eyed him curiously.
"You really like coffee huh? I can't stand the bitterness. Sweet things are way better."
Law eyed the hand stuffing a spoonful of cheesecake into Luffy's mouth. "Yeah I can tell." He replied with a bemused expression. It was clumsy, but kind of cute... Luffy blushed from embarrassment at his comment as the spoon slowly fell from his mouth.
Luffy's eyes scanned the array of desserts on their plates. Without a moment's hesitation, he cut off a generous piece of what appeared to be tiramisu. Holding it up with a grin, he directed the fork toward Law's lips.
"Torao, this one is coffee-flavored! You've got to try it!" Luffy's smile was infectious, and despite Law's usual aversion to being fed by someone else, he found himself obliging. With a subtle cringe, he parted his lips as Luffy's fork delivered the delectable combination of cream and coffee.
The flavors melded on Law's tongue, and he couldn't help but acknowledge the skill in the dessert. Luffy, seemingly pleased with Law's reaction, continued to share bites of different desserts, each one more delightful than the last.
"You've got to admit, they're pretty amazing," Luffy commented between bites, his eyes fixed on Law's reactions.
Law smirked, conceding, "Yeah, they're not bad."
Luffy finished his desserts and the waitress brought their check. Law passed his credit card to the waitress without looking to see the damage Luffy had done to his wallet.
The pair left the cafe and made their way to the street. Law was caught off guard by a hand that suddenly slithered its way around his wrist. He turned to face Luffy who looked up at him through his lashes.
"Hey Torao... That was fun. Thank you." Luffy nervously responded.
"Yeah it was. No problem." Law replied genuinely. He had enjoyed their dinner despite the fact that Luffy was a slight slob and rambled on about whatever he felt like.
In some ways the younger man reminded him of Corazon. There was never a gap in their conversations even though Law wasn't the one initiating the subjects. The older man always had a witty comment to tease Law with just like Luffy. Cora was also a fascinated storyteller. He was sure if he put the two in a room together they would just ramble on for hours.
"So..." Luffy began nervously "I know this date was just a pay back for your hat but um maybe we can hang out again? I really did have fun... it's been awhile since I just spent time with someone." Luffy confessed, a hand still grasping Law's wrist.
Law recalled his prior thoughts of enjoying the time he was spending with Luffy.
However, the pessimism that always lingered in his heart creeped in. There really wasn't any point in him meeting with the quirky dark-haired man again. Getting involved with anyone was against Law's policy. After all, his protection from the darker side of Dressrosa only stretched so far.
But as Luffy looked up at him with pleading eyes, the house of cards that was holding up his resolve seemed to collapse. He felt the heat of Luffy's hand grasping his wrist as he took in the sight of the dark-haired man begging him to see him again. He felt like he was about to tell a begging puppy that they couldn't have a bite of his food.
He slipped his wrist out of Luffy's grasp and the man looked at him with a saddened expression, likely feeling rejected, which tugged at his heartstrings. Without thinking, he took Luffy's hand in his own and rubbed his tattooed thumb reading "D" down the hand of the other.
Yeah. I had fun too. We can hang out again." Law gave Luffy's hand a squeeze and looked down on him with the hint of a smile.
Suddenly, Law felt himself being pulled forward by his shirt. He opened his mouth to utter a protest and before he could form a word, warm lips pressed against his but before he knew it, they were gone.
Luffy was looking up at him again, this time pressed close to his chest and still grasping his hand. Law's thoughts darkened for a fleeting second as he looked down at the cute face and wide eyes before him. The faint blush in the man's cheeks stirred something akin to desire in Law that he had not experienced before.
But before he could think on it any further, Luffy released him from his grasp and stepped away.
"I'll text you. Bye Torao!" The smaller man grinned up at him and disappeared off into the night.
Law didn't have the mental capacity to even form words to respond. Did Luffy just kiss him and leave? He watched the form of the man before him disappear before him, his head full of more questions than answers as he made his way home.
–
Luffy pressed his back to the concrete wall of a nearby building, inhaling a deep breath. Out of sheer nervousness, he had run away from Law after kissing him. Law had looked extremely surprised but Luffy didn't find anything to be too odd about his actions, after all he had enjoyed the date with Law and wasn't that what people did to express that feeling? He pressed a finger to his mouth, still feeling the tingling of Law's lips.
The date had been unexpectedly enjoyable, with the easy flow of conversation and the shared laughter over dinner. He marveled at the fact that this was his first proper date, and Law had made it comfortable and memorable. It was also a plus that Luffy could spend so much time admiring Law's handsome face. Although generally solemn, Law's expressions as he listened to Luffy recount his tales showed a hint of a content smile and Luffy couldn't help but imagine how radiant Law's true smile would be.
Plus, he looked damn good with his shirt partially unbuttoned, showing off dark lines of tattoos that led down into his chest. Luffy thought his tattoos were intriguing and couldn't help imaging what lay below his line of sight.
Exiting the cafe, Luffy couldn't contain the excitement bubbling within him. A newfound warmth had settled in his chest, and he pondered whether Law felt the same. Before he knew it, he found himself asking to see Law again to which he agreed. He momentarily regretted it when Law pulled his hand out of Luffy's grip. He was going to be rejected that easily.
But as Law took Luffy's hand in his, and stood before him towering over him by a few inches, he impulsively grabbed his shirt, closing the gap between them and pressing his lips to Law's. The kiss, although brief, was electrifying. Luffy felt a rush of emotions — surprise, curiosity, and an undeniable connection. It left him yearning for more, a new feeling that Luffy couldn't deny.
The unexpected turn of events left Luffy with a mix of emotions. He had acted out of sheer desire to express his feelings to Law and knew that it wasn't uncommon to share a kiss with someone after a date. After all, Law had agreed to see him again so he must have liked Luffy enough. He hadn't really planned it, it kind of just happened.
Making his way home, Luffy hummed feeling unexpectedly content for the first time in a long time.
That night, Luffy slept dreamlessly.
