Chapter 40: waking
Raoul cornered the mongrel at the stairs to the library where he used to retreat to whenever someone entered the condo. It seemed some of Raven's oddities were ingrained far deeper into him than the loss of his memories suggested. Raoul closed the distance between them and grabbed his wrist. The mongrel anyhow didn't flee him out of fear. He turned Raven's wrist up, forcing him to open his fist and put the VR on his palm. The dark one eyed the device, eyed him and closed his fingers around the VR.
“I don't know if you understand what I say but I know for a fact, you understand something.”
Raoul turned away from him with a heavy sigh, making for his study. A shadow danced over the tiles, that startled Raven form his musings. He looked up and was greeted by the sight of the Blondie leaning against the wall. His heart picked up pace on its own accord at the sight of the other man. He followed the Blondie.
Something akin to contentment stole itself in Raoul's features. He pulled the tiny figure into a close embrace, inhaling the unique scent, “Mine.” He wiggled the VR from Raven's fingers and inserted it in a mobile injector which he placed against the mongrel's neck. When he activated it, the younger one crumbled against him with pain. “I'm sorry,” he halfway breathed through a deep kiss. Behind them the twin moons started their ascend as did Raoul carrying the now still form of his mongrel to the sanctum. He undressed both of them quickly and initiated the synchronization process before sinking into the safety of the plug basin with Raven in his arms.
Darkness surrounded the young man, darkness and warmth. He didn't name it, he wasn't able to name anything. He just felt and welcomed, what he felt. For some reason he knew, he wasn't alone. If he concentrated … if he concentrated enough, could he reach the source of this warm feeling. He didn't know yet. He felt content in the darkness, he felt secure.

Kris felt contentment stretch out into his marrow. He new for a fact, that it wasn't his own. He didn't feel content, he felt heartbroken and yet relieved. He felt the bond starting to thin out until it nearly withdrew. He knew, Raven was fast asleep with his mind far gone. He took a glance around the room, than the hall and finally the steps to the library. Here he had met him, here he had decided to entwine his soul to him, denying the obvious bond between the mongrel and his Blondie master. A part of him knew, he didn't belong here, never had and so he made for the balcony, a cup of ice cream in hand. When had he started feeling that tired? Or didn't he have the time to recognize the tiredness before? Kris decided to leave the two of them to the automated security system, that Kyle had installed. For once he welcomed the change even though it made his presence obsolete most of the time. The system still couldn't guide a dreamer back to the realm of reality when he got lost. The Feron dipped his spoon into the ice cream and relished the mass melting on his tongue. Raoul's kitchen had some benefits for an always hungry Feron. After emptying the simply gave in to his first impulse of stretching out under the warm midday sun and finally fell asleep.
He must have slept quite some time because when he woke, he lay inside on the sofa, safely covered by a warm blanket. He blinked and curled up on his side. A familiar Blondie sat across him, a data panel on his knees. “Why are you here, Kyle?”
Kyle rose a brow, “Your question lacks your usual disgust, my little Kris. You aren't feeling ill, are you?”
“No,” Kris chuckled. After having some rest, he felt relaxed enough to even endure Kyle. “You might not believe it, and I might regret telling it, but there are days in which I can't muster the courage to hate you.”
“What a sweet way to tell me, I finally succeeded in endearing myself to you.”
“I already regret it.” Despite the words, he smiled humorously.
“I took the liberty to order dinner and I expect you to eat every single bite. You are to thin.”
“I've never been one to turn a good meal down. Bring it on.”
The front door opened, revealing a familiar frame, “Kyle, are you gracious enough to enlighten me on why I am delivering food to Raoul's condo in the middle of the night?”
“Punctual to the minute, Katze. Of course you are here, so we can have said food together. Take a seat.”
The redheaded dealer lazed about an expensive leather arm chair and exchanged the delivery cartoons for a pack of cigarettes. He stuffed one to his mouth but didn't light it up. Kyle took it upon himself to unwrap the foil container. “Katze, this is yours and that would be mine. No cutlery?” He looked questioningly at the Feron, “Kris?”
The young man got up and said, “of course” while stretching his limbs.
“Is that one of your spontaneous cranks or does this gathering serve a purpose?”
“Katze, Katze, ever the business man. When did you drop your obedient facade or does finally the mongrel pike within you?”
“During the last weeks you did everything to rise my hackles, didn't you? So please, satisfy my curiosity so we can move on to the business talks.”
Kyle laughed wholeheartedly and handed the redhead his data panel, “I have a job proposal for you. You would have to work with Elaran Amidari but otherwise be your own man.”
“I see.” The unconvinced dealer skimmed the files, “Does Raoul have to say something about those changes?”
“Jupiter changes so fast, I rarely have time to proceed its musings. I don't know if Raoul contributed to the decision.”
“Of course, he did or did Jupiter ever change its ways before the plug was installed.”
“Point taken, Kris but this Jupiter can hardly be compared to the original one. Your playmate attacked the program quite effectively. The current version is a bizarre mixture of the initial source code, countless repaired clusters and bridge overs of different nature and a plug in between that is supposed to bridge the gap between technology and biology.” The Blondie sighed stagily, “It refuses to communicate with us. With Raoul's exception, Jupiter's children are blind.”
“I daresay, you are forced to see for the first time.”

“Isn't it time to wake up?”
“Is it?”
“Answering a question with a counter question doesn't get us anywhere … he deserves to wake.”
