Chapter 37: ...And Learn to Fly Again
Alex woke when the sun broke through her window, spilling over the four poster bed. As she opened her eyes, she found her vision swimming with bright emerald eyes and she gasped in confusion before she remembered that Hugue had come to bed with her the night before. He was propped up on one elbow, watching her sleep, his gentle smile illuminating his young face. She smiled back and reached up to cup his cheek. He closed his eyes, leaning into her hand until she withdrew. When he opened his eyes again, there was a burning in his gaze that Alex knew well. Blushing, she nuzzled into the pillow and closed her eyes. Hugue leaned down and kissed her tenderly. Alex wanted nothing more than to wrap her arms around him and return all his affections, but something was holding her back.
He was searching again, always filled with such a sweet, searing longing. The tip of his tongue traced her lower lip, and she whimpered, shuddering as his muscular arms encircled her, his fingers spreading over her back. Alex gasped, her back arching slightly at his touch, but Hugue still would not take advantage of their closeness. He nipped her lower lip, suckling it gently, but wouldn’t go further. Alex pulled away gently, resting her forehead against his.
“Alexandra, what’s wrong?” Hugue’s voice was softer, deeper, transformed. She had heard other voices transformed this way, but to hear Hugue’s voice this way stirred something inside her. She felt unwanted warmth pooling in her belly and pulled away from him, smiling unconvincingly.
“Nothing. I’m fine.”
“Chérie. I can tell something is wrong.” His accent had gotten a little heavier as he tucked his nose under her chin and kissed her throat. Alex gasped, quite sensitive in light of his ministrations.
“Hugue.” Her voice was breathless and deeper than she’d meant it to be. He tucked a single warm hand into her nightshirt, tracing his fingertips down her spine. Alex arched her back like she’d been electrically shocked and moaned outright. Hugue’s sigh of contentment set her to trembling.
“Alexandra.” Hugue pressed his body against her, half laying over her, half pinning her to the bed. Hugue’s obvious arousal was pressed into her thigh and Alex’s trembling increased.
“Hugue, I--”
Hugue cut her off, kissing her, venturing into her mouth, his tongue tracing every contour. Alex whimpered, her face flushing, her muscles tensing and her back stiffening. She wanted desperately to relax and let Hugue do whatever he would, but something in her twisted terribly at the thought, panic seeping through her limbs. She repeated over and over again that it was Hugue, that he was being affectionate, that he would never hurt her. When his hand snaked into her shirt to trace her spine again she pulled away whimpering.
"Chérie? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I just... I don’t know...” Alex turned her face away, blushing in embarrassment. Hugue took in her facial expression and body language and realized he’d pushed for too much too soon.
“Forgive me, Chérie.” Hugue took her hand and kissed the back of it softly, smiling that gentle smile he saved for her alone.
“There is nothing to forgive.” Alex smiled at him, relaxing as his usual, more reserved, nature reappeared. Placing a kiss on his cheek, Alex rose from bed and wandered to the bathroom, starting the shower. Some small part of her hoped Hugue would follow her in and not give her a choice, but overall she was grateful that he respected her privacy for right now. She didn’t know what was holding her back. She’d pulled away from Abel too, but had believed it to be due to her guilt over Cain. Now, as she pulled away from Hugue, all she could attribute it to was the riding tide of panic that choked her whenever he should have been taking her breath away. She showered quickly, brushed her teeth, and returned to find Hugue laying back in bed, his broad, bare chest lying in a small patch of sun. His scars created a brilliant roadmap across his body and she found them quite fascinating. He watched her, watching him, and sat up to gain her attention.
“What are you thinking about, Chérie?”
“Baby names.” Hugue smiled as she rubbed her belly. She hadn’t started to show yet, but she would most likely start showing soon. Methuselah develop quicker than Terrans and he suspected that Alex’s children would develop even quicker.
“I’m sure you will choose beautiful names, and I’m sure you will be the best mother the world has ever seen.”
“I don’t know if I can do this, Hugue.” Alex worried her lip, staring at the carpet, dismayed at her lack of emotions. She didn’t hate them or love them. She felt just like she had before she knew about them. She wondered if this apathy would carry over after they were born.
“I don’t feel anything.” Hugue stood, coming to stand next to her, placing his hand on her stomach.
“Close your eyes, Chérie.”
“Why?”
“Just close your eyes and focus on them.” Alex did as she was instructed, breathing deeply, finding immense comfort in Hugue’s touch. “What do you feel?”
“Nothing.” Alex’s brows furrowed, but her eyes remained closed.
“Concentrate, Chérie.” Alex was silent for several moments, her face scrunched in concentration. Her face relaxed and an almost inaudible gasp left her slightly parted lips.
“I feel them. They’re not definite, they don’t feel like anything in particular, but I feel something that wasn’t there before. I feel their lives.”
“Yes, Chérie, and soon you will feel their little hearts. After that you will feel them shift and interact. You will grow more attached when there is more to be attached to. It is not abnormal for it to feel like any other day when they are yet so very small.” Alex blushed brightly as he smiled at her, a sense of relief washing over her.
“Hugue, you are too kind hearted. I’m afraid I will break you.”
“Chérie, the only thing that could break me is your absence. If you were taken to a place where I could not reach you, I would break into a million little pieces.” Hugue placed a chaste kiss on her hairline and moved into the bathroom to freshen up. When he emerged he was dressed and ready to leave. Alex followed Hugue to the door, and back to his dorm where he changed into fresh clothes. While Alexandra was waiting outside the priests’ dormitory, Tres happened upon her and remained until they were ready to leave again.
“Good morning, Lady Alexandra. Cardinal Sforza has sent me to retrieve you and Father Watteau.”
“Sure thing, Tres. Hugue is upstairs right now, I was just waiting for him.”
“Okay.” The word came out stiffly and dredged up terrible memories for Alex, but she smiled at his awkward attempt to follow her apparently still-standing order.
“Tres, you’re a real piece of work.”
“Define vernacular phrase: real piece of work.”
“Eh, maybe later, Tres.” Hugue emerged and the three began walking to Lady Catherina’s office.
“Okay.” Hugue gave Tres a quizzical look before looking to Alex for an explanation. She shrugged and they continued their walk in silence. Tres opened the door for Alex and Hugue and Hugue waited to let Alex pass through first. She smiled at him, although weakly, and stepped into the room. In the next second her stomach fell through the pit of her stomach and then promptly shot up to lodge in her throat. She blanched and looked at Lady Catherina as if she’d signed her very death warrant. Hugue passed into the room and noted the expression on Alex’s face, quickly following her line of site to the silver ponytail sitting at the back of the head that greeted them. He smiled reassuringly at her and took her hand, bringing her to a chair a good distance from Abel, taking the seat next to her, placing himself between them. Alex’s heart was thundering and she knew that if he wanted to, he’d be able to hear it.
Alex struggled to still her heart, Hugue’s hand, still tightly grasping her, wasn’t helping the matter. She could feel Abel’s eyes boring into their hands and anger rose within her like a venomous serpent ready to strike should he dare to say anything. She prayed the Cardinal had warned him to hold his tongue before she’d shown up. She wondered what he’d said about her. Slowly, far too slowly for Alex’s liking, the others filed in, Vaclav, William, Esther, Kate, and Leon. They all sat in a semi-circle around the Cardinal’s desk, waiting for her to address them.
“Good afternoon, everyone.” Catherina smiled at them, one of her rare shows of affection for her adopted children. They all replied with a simple hello or good morning. Alex noticed that Abel said nothing, sitting farther back from the group than was necessary.
“I have called you all here for a reason today. We will be inducting Lady Alexandra into the AX.” Everyone turned to look at Alexandra and her face found a new shade of red as she quickly dropped her gaze to the carpeting.
“All right!” Leon’s loud voice was the first to offer acceptance of the idea.
“Wonderful.” William removed his pipe and did a sort of toasting motion with it before replacing it at his lip.
“Welcome aboard.” Vaclav smiled at her warmly.
“Yes, welcome to the team.” Kate chimed and Esther merely smiled brightly behind her, nodding her approval.
“We needed more girls anyway, I think.” Esther seemed more chipper in Alex’s presence than before and Alex wondered at the change in her attitude. Abel still remained silent, as did Tres. Hugue squeezed her hand slightly and smiled at her. Alex had a sinking feeling at his silence, but tried to hold back the stinging sensation that pricked the back of her eyes.
“You can’t be serious.” Abel’s voice sounded low and menacing from across the semi-circle, all the keening trill reserved for the others of the team gone and replaced by a coldness that seeped into Alex’s bones. All the jaws in the room except for Catherina’s and Tres’s dropped to the floor as all eyes fell on him. Alex’s face crumpled as if she were in pain.
“Abel, you are on thin ice. I suggest you hold your tongue.”
“How can I? You seriously mean to induct her? She’s in league with the enemy.” Abel leveled a hateful gaze on her, but she could also see hurt in his eyes. Alex’s hand slipped out of Hugue’s as if it were a shameful display. All eyes turned swiftly to Alex.
“Silence! She is in league with us. I have spoken with Alex about the ordeal a great sight more than you have, and I believe what she has told me. That should be enough for you.” All eyes had snapped to Catherina. Abel stood and leveled his gaze on the blonde Cardinal.
“What if it isn’t enough?” Alex’s heart had stopped. He’d gone out of his way to challenge her, to humiliate her in front of the rest of their family and to place doubt upon her. She wanted to die, in that moment, more than at any other time in her life. She wished for everything to be instantly undone. She wished she’d never set foot in Rome, never even been born.
“How dare you challenge me! I am the head of the AX and I induct those members I deem worthy. Alex has proven a valuable asset and she is now a Crusnik like yourself. Once she is properly trained and in full command of her new form, she will redouble our strength and we will finally be unrivaled. She is a good fighter and a kind hearted person. Much less could be said for you right now, Abel.” The eyes in the room bounced between the two women and Abel like a three way ping pong game.
“She is worthless in the state she’s in. She cannot accept missions and the rest of us will be forced to protect her for the duration!” Abel’s voice rose in anger and the other’s eyebrows rose quizzically at his ambiguous comments.
“Sit down this instant or remove yourself from my office! Really, Abel. You’re almost one thousand years old, can’t you act your age?”
“She carries that thing’s child in her womb and you want me to just accept it!” Alex gasped quietly and the others turned to stare at her, slack jawed. Alex’s eyes welled with tears of shame, her gaze falling on Abel’s face as it contorted in fury. “I will not work on the same team as her. He has poisoned her with his very being and she will be forever linked to him. She is tainted.”
Alex’s anguish actually stopped her heart. She could feel it hold still for a few moments, only to resume thundering even more chaotically than before. Alex stood and covered the few steps that separated them. Abel towered over her, but she would not backdown. She raised her bare left forearm, the claw of the first finger on her right hand growing menacingly long. Abel and everyone else in the room stood transfixed, watching as she raised her claw, slicing her own flesh from wrist to elbow. Her blood flowed down her skin for a few moments before rising into the air in great liquid ribbons, forming a massive sword that was almost as long as she was tall. The hilt of the sword resembled a dragon’s head and the tang, massive wings. Her own wings spread out behind her impressively, their brightness making the room seem quite dark. Her hair flowed violently around her and her eyes burned with the fire of her anger.
“Her soul slides away, but don’t look back in anger.” Alex’s voice was undercut by the graveling overtones of her Crusnik form and everyone in the room felt the hairs on the back of their necks stand up at the bitterness of her tone. Alex, without turning her face or body away from Abel, threw the massive sword, crashing it through the massive door to Lady Catherina’s office. Alex withdrew her claws, her blood flowing back to her quickly, and raised her right hand, slapping Abel with all her might. The force of the blow didn’t break his jaw, but nevertheless resulted in a rather loud pop. Abel held his ground and Alex rose into the air, flying swiftly from the room, leaving the occupants to stare in horror. Hugue stood quickly, spitting at Abel’s feet angrily.
“Tu es fou!” Hugue’s face was red and contorted in his anger and he immediately left to follow after Alexandra.
The rest of the room stared at the destroyed entrance way for some moments before turning to stare at Abel, then Catherina. Catherina stood and slowly walked around her desk to face Abel. She slapped him in precisely the same spot as Alex had.
“You really are a fool, Abel. She doesn’t carry just his child. She carries yours as well.” Abel’s eyes snapped up to meet hers, incredulous.
“What did you say?”
“They are twins, and she has been assured that one is yours and one is your brother’s.” Abel stared at her, finding no lie in her wise features.
“I could not distinguish that there were two. I could only catch the faintest of scents...” Abel trailed off, his fingers rising to brush over his abused cheek.
“Abel, what have you done?” Everyone in the room turned and looked out the doorway, looking at the splintered shards of what was once Lady Catherina’s office door.
tu es fou= you are a fool. Name the song and I.... will give you props? :P
