I'm here to apologize and explain. I'm sorry this has taken forever for me to upload. I've hit a really low point in my life and unfortunately the first thing to go is my creativity and my will. So basically, I didn't want to write and I couldn't think of anything anyways. What I've decided to do is end Colour me blood red.
WAIT! I don't mean finish, I mean end. This story has become part of the shitty time in my life so I'm hoping to kick start my brain by ending this part and RESTARTING it. I'm going to start writing a sequel, just to see if that will help me because there is still so much I want to do with this story, I don't want it to die yet.
I'm so sorry this has taken forever, but I'm finally on my way to getting better. It's only taken three or four frigging months. Not to mention my workplace is in the middle of a huge shit storm and I've lost most of my days off. So, I've been working around my schedule and here is the LAST chapter of Colour me Blood red.
Keep your eyes out for the next part though!
COLOUR ME BLOOD RED: HUMAN AFTER ALL
*************************
CHAPTER 41
Kenya hurried through empty side streets and even emptier alleyways, eyes unfocused as he followed the trail of energy. The sounds from the distant streets grew more muffled every side street he turned down. Smells drifted through the air but he was too focused on his trail to notice the drastic change.
“Oshitari-san, wait up!”
Kenya cursed and slowed his pace; sometimes he forgot he moved faster than the average human. He stuck his hands in his jean pockets and waited for his partner to catch up.
Zaizen rolled his eyes as he jogged around the final corner, coming to a stop a few steps behind the Fae, “his energy isn’t going anywhere for at least another hour, you CAN slow down a little bit.” Zaizen’s voice sounded slightly strained, his cheeks a little too flushed.
Kenya ground his teeth and turned on his heel to continue after the trail. If it wasn’t for the fact that he was trying to get the decidedly Hetero Zaizen in bed he would have never asked Shiraishi for the pain in the ass. He felt slightly guilty; he did tend to forget that it wasn’t Zaizen’s fault he couldn’t keep up …
“Pardon me for being a frigging mortal,” Zaizen hissed under his breath.
And then he went and opened his mouth and Kenya felt incredibly less guilty. He turned and continued on at a brisk walk, Zaizen groaned and started jogging.
Colours blurred together as his eyes drifted to half-mass, it was easier to focus on the specific energy in the tangle of others when his other senses weren’t being used as optimally.
“Oshitari-san!”
Kenya spun on the younger male, “what now?! I’m walking slower, what could you possibly-“
Zaizen ignored his rant and pointed past his shoulder, “look.”
Kenya blinked before slowly looking back over his shoulder. They were in a deserted alleyway surrounded by fallen garbage cans and stacked boxes; everything one needed for a stereotypical city alleyway. The smell of stale alcohol and cooking grease hit the Fae with enough force to stagger him on the spot. The alley opened up to what looked like a small dingy court yard, bordered on all sides by dirty red brick buildings. Opened garbage bins lined one building, refuse falling from the over-filled dumpster.
The only thing out of place was the large steel door lit by a string of red lights.
Shadows shifted and Kenya realized with a sigh that they were no where near a road; there was no light movement to cast the darkness around like that. It didn’t take a genius to realize where they were, and who they were currently being surrounded by.
“Are you lost?”
Kenya heard Zaizen groan at his shoulder. He had led them to one of the entrances they currently weren’t allowed to be near; and this was their welcoming party.
“Probably looking for some privacy!” Laughter erupted from the shadows around them. It was an interesting trick only certain species possessed; the ability to hide in plain sight, to draw the darkness around them like one might draw a cloak or even a jacket.
“Hey cutie, come play with the big boys instead,” more laughter.
“Are they talking to me?” Zaizen frowned.
“Yup,” Kenya snorted. He cast his energy out, finding, counting. One, two …three, four …five. All of them Vampires.
“Don’t be shy, we don’t bite …hard.” Laughter and cat-calls, a shadow in the corner by the door shifted. The line of jaw and shoulder appeared as if the Vampire was having a hard time holding his spell.
“Keep your mouth shut Zaizen,” Kenya hissed over his shoulder when he felt the air behind him grow warm.
“My mouth is really the last thing they need to worry about,” Zaizen growled back.
A large Vampire stepped out of the shadows to their left, grinning. The shadows seemed to part for him as he stepped into the open like he had simply thrown aside a curtain. He crossed his large muscled arms over his equally muscled chest, the movement threatening to split his tight black tee-shirt.
“He sounds like quite the little spit-fire,” beef-cake Vampire asked.
“You have no idea,” Kenya muttered. Could this guy scream bouncer any louder?
Another Vampire stepped from the shadows, instead of parting the darkness seemed to dissolve around him. He wasn’t as muscled as the first, but he was taller. “They’re both awfully pretty, I wonder if blondie’s carpet matches the curtains?” He sneered at the pair, crooked grin showing long curved fangs, “we should teach them what happens when people trespass.”
Kenya held up his hands, “we want no problems guys, honest mistake, we’ll just be leaving.”
Two more Vampires stepped from the shadows behind them in the alleyway, blocking their escape. The fifth and last Vampire stepped in front of the door, grinning like the rest. The entire group circled them, black shirts marking them all as guards for this entrance. Seems the Vampire community was on as high-alert as the human.
Fabulous.
“You can explain to Sanada that it was self-defense since you’re the one that got us into this mess, Oshitari-san.”
“Zaizen,” Kenya hissed in warning. That was exactly the kind of situation he was trying to avoid! Zaizen was normally laid back, the level-headed of the two …until he was pushed.
He now knew what a deer felt like when it was surrounded by a pack of hyena’s. The barking laughter, the hunger perfuming the air, the knowledge that your blood is warm. His hands twitched towards his hidden weapons; unfortunately he was trying to avoid that path.
“This place is out of the way, you’d have to make a lot of wrong turns to end up here by accident. And the scent coming from both of you says you’re a little more than human,” beef cake, clearly the leader of the group, took a threatening step forward, attempting to use his height and mass to intimidate the two smaller men.
Kenya sighed and cursed mentally, there was a whole list of people he was going to have to apologize to after this. He could already feel the energy trail he was following breaking down; there was almost no point in following it further. He knew where Kite had gone, if he took that information to Atobe or Sanada, they could follow up on it from there. There was nothing more for him to do here. Except get out without Zaizen killing someone, preferably.
“Look, let us go and I won’t have to deep-fry any of you. I’m tired and really not in the mood for this,” Zaizen finally spoke.
The circle of Vampires broke out laughing, some with their heads thrown back.
It took every ounce of Kenya’s willpower not to slap himself in the forehead. Even these Vampires were starting to get on his nerves, and his temper was a lot shorter than Zaizen’s. Ah, to hell with it.
“Listen cutie,” a Vampire from the alley made the mistake of stepping up behind Zaizen and patting his backside. Angry red flames erupted from his fingertip to his elbow, bare skin immediately turning black. He screamed and lurched back, falling to his rear. His partner jumped in shock, swearing profusely. Ripping off his shirt he wrapped it around the charred arm to help pat out the flames without risking his own skin.
Zaizen’s eyes narrowed as he watched the other three Vampires. With a flick of his wrist he set one of the dumpsters on fire, the shock blasting it up a few feet. It slammed back down, the sound echoing in the small court yard.
“Anyone else wanna try?” His naturally quiet voice dropped to an angry hiss.
“Pyro, interesting,” beef cake growled, eyes narrowing. “Won’t make that mistake twice.” Using his supernatural speed he attempted to make a grab for Kenya. His hand closed on empty air instead of the front of Kenya’s shirt. “What the-“ a gun barrel pressed to the back of his head.
“He’s a little more than human, I’m a lot more,” Kenya hissed, pressing his gun hard enough to leave an indent. “Down!” He used the gun to angle the Vampire’s head forward as he kicked the back of his knees. He drew out a second gun from under his shirt and pointed it to another Vampire attempting to circle around behind him. “You trying to see how fast I really am?”
The Vampire stopped in mid-motion and then jumped in shock when a ring of fire danced across the concrete by his feet.
Zaizen grinned, “I don’t need a gun or a line of sight. You might want to keep that in mind.”
“Now that I have your attention,” Kenya made the big Vampire keep his hands in plain sight, head down, “I’ve got a question about who you’ve let through here recently.”
Tezuka sighed as he stared at the phone, the black device blurred due to the fact that his glasses were sitting low on his nose. Atobe’s voice prattled out at him but he had stopped listening several minutes ago. It was background noise, very annoying background noise.
Atobe had already explained why he hadn’t informed the Organization of their intervention before hand, and then why he decided not to inform them at all.
Of course, it was all a load of bullshit.
Stopping the Vampire in mid-sentence, Tezuka decided he had rambled on long enough, “and you neglected to tell us about Akutsu’s mother, why?”
Atobe hesitated, “I figured Shiraishi had.”
There was that blatant bullshit again. For a Centuries old Vampire, Atobe was a shitty liar. Definitely someone you wanted to play poker with. He was getting softer the longer he was in power.
“He mentioned her, but you seem to know a lot more about her than you are letting on.”
Atobe sighed, a long drawn out noise used for dramatics. “Long story short, a criminal in one of the faerie courts is an associate of the black witches, a string of names came out while trying to save his own hide and Akutsu’s mother was one of them. I think you can tie the rest together yourself, yes?”
Oh this was going to be a long night, “and you neglected to tell me about Ryuzaki’s granddaughter because? You do realize that she was almost killed because we were left out of the loop right?” Tezuka continued, not letting Atobe slip back into his calculated ramblings.
“I know you are smart enough to put two and two together, that was why I had the girl taken to you,” Atobe snorted.
Flattery, Atobe was hiding something, “and?”
“And?” Atobe chuckled darkly, “what makes you think there’s an ‘and’?”
“Because I know you better than you think,” Tezuka leaned forward on his elbow, pushing his glasses up to rub the bridge of his nose. He was not in the mood for games.
Silence stretched, and this time Tezuka allowed it. He knew Atobe well enough to know he was weighing his options.
“I’m only telling you this because my mistake almost got Sumire killed. Something didn’t seem right; I assumed they were using the attacks as a diversion to gain information elsewhere. The only thing was, I didn’t know where that elsewhere was. I was hoping with Yukimura and Kenya at their nest, keep in mind I had no idea they had kidnapped her granddaughter, they would slip up and tell us what they were planning. Finding the property with only Akutsu Yuuki’s name took longer than we had hoped and Kite was already gone. I had no idea it was also bait for us, they had lost whatever was blocking them from our senses, only Akutsu was spared.”
“You used Ryuzaki as bait and kept us all in the dark about it!?” Tezuka snapped.
“I did NOT use her as bait! I had no idea they had any interest in her, if I had known I would have done something to ensure her safety! I cannot confide every move I make to you, you have no idea what our world is like, especially on those like Sanada and myself!” Atobe barked back.
The two were at a stand-off; a tense silence followed as they calmed themselves down. Fighting each other would get them no where. Where they disagreed, they also understood; which seemed to only fuel the metaphorical fire.
Atobe was the first to break the silence, “is she going to pull through?”
Tezuka sighed; it was easy to forget that Atobe had known Ryuzaki since she was a girl, “it’s too early to tell.”
“Tezuka, you know I-“
Tezuka cut him off; he didn’t want to hear the Master’s explanation, didn’t need to, “what is Sanada going to do with Sengoku?”
Atobe paused at being cut off before letting out a bitter chuckle, “put him to use. I’m sure Sanada will inform you if they get anything …interesting from the Vampire. Good night Tezuka.”
Tezuka shuddered as he hung up the phone, he wouldn’t wish Yukimura’s torturous streak on even his worst enemy. The moment the receiver was in the cradle there was a knock at the door.
No rest for the wicked.
“Yes?”
Oishi ducked his head into the room, “you wanted to talk to Dan-kun?”
Tezuka nodded and pushed away from his desk, “yes I did.”
The boy was waiting for him in Oishi’s office. When the two older men entered he jumped up from where he was reclining on the small couch. His bird-boned hands fluttered down the front of his shirt, smoothing imaginary wrinkles.
“You can sit Dan,” Tezuka smiled softly and gestured back to the couch.
Dan nodded and slowly seated himself on the very edge of the couch, a fine nervous tremble in his knees. His hands kneaded together as he focused very intently on the floor in front of his toes. “Oishi-san said you wanted to talk to me?” He peeked up through his tangled bangs, long eyelashes tangling in the fine wisps of hair.
Tezuka took one of the chairs from in front of Oishi’s desk and turned it to face the couch. He reclined casually, ankle on his opposite knee. Oishi took his seat behind the desk, chin resting on his palm.
“We mean you no harm, we never have. I just want to know what you know.” Tezuka smiled, encouraging the boy.
“I know what happened to everyone, and what’s happening to Sengoku-san …” Dan ducked his head again, “and I know that no one has found Akutsu-san.”
The Captain’s interest was peeked, “how do you know that Dan?”
The boy finally sat up straight, sharp eyes finding Tezuka’s, “because no one will. She wants Akutsu-san because she can control him, so she will keep him hidden. I guess the others were no longer part of her plan. They had become expendable so she let you have them. She knows everything she needs now.”
“What are you saying Dan?”
“She’s going to go back into hiding until she’s ready, none of us know where she is, Kite-san is the only one who knows where she is. She made sure no one knows too much of anything, that way when she had no more use for them they could be gotten rid of without being a threat.”
Tezuka dropped his foot to the ground with a loud thump and leaned forward, “hiding?”
“She’s planning something, something big. That’s all I know, Akutsu-san only tells me a little bit because he knows you have a Telepath that can get into my head,” Dan cast his eyes down in embarrassment.
“What did you mean she can control Akutsu?” Oishi asked.
“His mother. Everyone thinks she’s evil, even Sengoku-san. They don’t realize the truth,” Dan hesitated, shifting his weight.
“Truth?” Oishi leaned forward a fraction, betraying his enthusiasm.
“That she’s being held hostage, she’s her bargaining chip. Yuuki-chan is human. She keeps Akutsu-san in line and loyal to her by threatening his mother. Yuuki-chan is a witch, which is how she heard of her. Then she found out her son is a Vampire, turned by an enemy to punish her.” Dan rubbed at his eyes. “Akutsu cares a lot about his mother; it’s the only reason why he’s helping her. He doesn’t have any interest in what she’s doing; he’s just trying to keep his mother safe.”
Tezuka nodded, recognizing the plea in Dan’s eyes. “Does ‘she’ have a name?” He leaned back, unfortunately the boy didn’t know as much as he had hoped.
Dan shrugged, ”I don’t know, they only ever call her ‘she’.”
“Where is Kite?” Tezuka finally asked the question they all really wanted to know. He didn’t mean to sound cruel to Akutsu’s mother, but to help her he needed to know more about everyone involved.
Dan shook his head, “he is too close to her, he’ll go into hiding with her.”
Shit! “Was he working with anyone?” Tezuka tried to hide his disappointment.
“Yup,” Dan nodded rapidly, “I heard Akutsu-san arguing with Kite-san one night, he doesn’t like them, thinks they’re creepy. They are from the islands like Kite-san, so their accent is really hard to understand. I don’t know their names, Akutsu just kept calling them the ‘big wolf’ and the ‘fluffy-haired mosquito’.” He shrugged, “and I heard something about a witch? Kite-san hit him before he could say his name, all I heard was Hira?”
It wasn’t much, but it was somewhere to start!
“Do you have the funds to move into a new apartment?” Oishi changed the subject, casting a glance to Tezuka that blatantly said ‘I dare you to stop me’.
“I don’t think so, I only work for minimum wage.” Dan shook his head.
Tezuka caught Oishi’s glare and sighed, “look, Dan, we need some more people around here. Not full-time like the Hunters, but someone that knows their way around the Vampire community.”
The boy’s brown eyes sparkled as he listened eagerly, leaning forward on his knees. His shirt slipped forward to reveal a long thing neck and prominent collar covered in small pin-prick scars.
“We pay per job. The extra money will help you find a new place, which we highly suggest you do.” Tezuka continued, noting Oishi’s nod of approval. “The doors here are always open if you need our help.” Tezuka stood, offering Dan his hand.
He jumped from the couch and shook Tezuka’s hand. He was led to the door but before he was escorted out he turned and grabbed Tezuka’s hand. “Tezuka-san, it may be a while before she comes back, so I suggest you take that time to get ready. I don’t know what she’s doing, but it’ll make what’s been happening look like a day at the park.”
