Min: I sure wish I spoke italian. Glad to hear you're feeling better. Yeah, Hugue's a great guy. If he weren't around, well, Alex might not be!And it's okay, I don't have a life either, that's why I write this stuff! Yeah, Abel needed to get his just desserts I think. Read on! and enjoy! thank you for being loyal
Astharoshe: nope, not quite! Nice try though. You're the only one who guessed. Well, I wanted to kinda make a point that sometimes we misjudge things based on perceived half-truths. Abel only had half the story, but blundered on anyway. Sorry, Hugue is....*ahem*.... disposed at the moment (tied up naked to my bed) maybe next time ;) And again, you didn't have to wait long :P
Darkephoenix: yeah. *sighs* dunno what to say. I know, and it might even seem like this isn't something Abel would do, but I got to see how violently he could react to Cain, and I felt like it might happen. Anyway. Thanks for the praise, and don't worry. I had a bio geekgasm writing up all the bio factoids invading my writing.
DarkCrusnikMagician: I'm glad I made your morning! I do try :> yeah, again, anger can cloud judgement amazingly. It took him a while to sniff out the truth, so to speak. It is angsty. Anyway, read on!
Retro Lamb: Yeah, I think it was warranted. She didn't pull a bobbit on him, so he got off easy. yeah, I guess it's easy for me to write emo stuff because I'm so emo! :> Thanks for the praise and read on!
Chapter 38: You Just Need to Have Faith
Alex swooped into her chambers, tearing clothes from the closet and toiletries from the bathroom. She filled her suitcase, blood tears staining her porcelain cheeks as she stuffed her belongings unceremoniously into her luggage. Hugue raced full tilt down the corridors, praying that Alex had the sense to retrieve her belongings before leaving. He was relieved when he skidded to a halt in front of her open room door. He could hear the strange sound of her crying, her Crusnik voice more gravelly than ever. He stepped into the room, trying to catch his breath.
Alex stopped what she was doing, half expecting to find Abel standing in her doorway. Her face changed into a far less vengeful, more sorrowful mask. She was beautiful, even in the midst of her fury and anguish.
“Chérie, you mustn’t.” Hugue’s voice was choked with emotion and it tugged at her heart.
“Leave me, Hugue. There is no place for me here. Abel has taken his stand. He is against me and against his own child.”
“Yes, Chérie, but he is a fool. Let him be self-righteous, but do not endanger yourself simply because he cannot control his own anger. Think of the children, Chérie.”
“I am, Hugue! He is a danger to me and my children. He has changed, become some sort of monster. I no longer know him or trust him. Go, Hugue. Leave me be.”
“Chérie, please. You can’t leave.” Hugue sounded so young and desperate and Alex felt wretched for causing him pain. Nevertheless, Alex steeled herself for the lonely road ahead.
“Watch me.”
“Then I am coming with you.”
“No. The AX needs you.”
“And I need you, Alexandra. I cannot watch you leave like this. I can’t sit back while you disappear.” Alex paused in her chaotic packing to gaze at Hugue. His face was painted with desperation and pleading. She couldn’t deny that she wanted him by her side, even though she was unsure exactly what she wanted that to mean for them.
“All right. You must pack quickly. I won’t stop so that anyone can try to convince me to stay.”
“I’ve already got my things packed.”
“What?” Alex’s flight response paused momentarily to process this strange bit of information.
“I was waiting to be assigned for a mission for so long, that I just packed and left the suitcase in the closet. I don’t have very many things.” Alex nodded and Hugue dashed off to the dormitory to retrieve his things. Alex finished packing, scouring the room for anything she could have left behind. She swiped angrily at her persistent tears, hating that she felt anything but anger after Abel’s little stunt. She wondered what had drawn them together in the first place, how she couldn’t have seen his fickle nature all along. She suddenly regretted her love affair with the other Crusnik and his godforsaken brother. Hugue reappeared mere moments later, sweating profusely from having to run in his ridiculously voluminous robes.
“I am ready when you are, Chérie.”
“Are you sure you want to go with me, Hugue? You may very well never see the other members of the AX in your lifetime.”
“Chérie, all I need to survive is to be with you.” He kissed her hand tenderly and she drew him into a crushing embrace, struggling to reign in her emotions before she hurt him inadvertently.
“I feel like I should be asking you if you trust me.” Alex’s weak attempt at a joke was not lost on Hugue and he smiled comfortingly.
“You shouldn’t have to ask by now.”
Alex took Hugue’s hand and strode out of the room. Once in the inner courtyard, Alex wrapped an arm securely around Hugue’s waist and took to the air, each of them holding a suitcase. The load was heavy and from the first powerful flap of her wings, Alex felt an awful ache in her muscles. The train station was nearby and she told herself over and over again that she could make it. Even though she was driving herself to her very limits of physical endurance, Alex knew she would make it because she carried her guiding light in her arms.
“How can she know? How could she possibly know that one of them is mine?” Abel flushed, the true nature of their relationship revealed finally, undeniably, to his colleagues. “Science couldn’t even distinguish that. We have identical DNA.”
“Perhaps she knows the time frame better than we do. Cain told her to watch over his son and yours as she now carried them in her belly. She is quite convinced that at least one is yours. All I can say is that a woman knows her body and a mother knows her child. I do not doubt her.” Lady Catherina stared out beyond the destroyed door as Tres gave the guards orders. They had arrived in a panic when the Cardinal’s door burst into pieces.
“It is physically possible to carry two babies at the same time by two different men.” William piped up from behind a small plume of smoke. Everyone turned to regard him much the same way as they would if he’d spoken up in the middle of a movie.
“How can this be?” Abel turned to address The Professor.
“If a woman ovulates, she can drop one egg, two eggs, several eggs. This is how non-identical twins are made. They are no more similar than any two siblings. The other way is for the eggs to split into two or more individual groupings of cells and form two or more individual children. However, there is a rare occurrence in which a woman ovulates, dropping more than one egg, at very slightly different times. One egg can be fertilized and while it’s traveling to the uterus, the second can follow closely behind and become fertilized as well. It’s a long shot, but it’s not impossible. If you and your brother were both with Alexandra within a short period of time, it’s very possible that you could both have created a child with her. She could very well be carrying non-identical twins by identical fathers. You are right in that we will never know indefinitely who the father of either child is.” Abel pinched his nose, soaking all the information in. He knew immediately that this had to be the case. He’d been with Alexandra just before she’d been kidnaped. There was a very real possibility that he’d fathered one of the children she now carried.
“What have I done?” Abel ran from the room to go find Alexandra, praying that he wasn’t too late to fix the damage he’d inflicted. Catherina commanded the others stay in her office and followed Abel as quickly as her robes and heels would allow. The two clattered around the corner that opened into the corridor where Alex was roomed, only to hear the whoosh of large wings as Alex lifted off in a small inner courtyard. Abel lept into the courtyard, calling after her, but she was already becoming a small speck, lost in the light of day. Abel gripped the sides of his head in dismay, screaming her name with every fiber of his being. He realized his foolishness far too late. He’d been smart enough to pick up the scent of the life that grew within her, but he never thought for a moment that it could possibly come from their beautiful union, his mind far too tangled with hatred for his brother.
His words had been hurtful and hateful in Catherina’s office, but he had never truly felt those things for Alexandra. He’d been hurt beyond imagining, his soul made raw by his mind replaying her visions over and over again in his head. He had missed something in them, now he knew. She had come back to him. She had come back, stumbling into his arms, smiling as her very body burned away in the light of the coming dawn. She would have died happy then, just having seen his face. Abel couldn’t even weep, so deep was his misery. He could blame no one but himself, for his own foolishness had sent her away. He had no idea where she was going, but he knew she wouldn’t come back. Abel fell to his knees, tearing at his silver hair. Lady Catherina came and stood next to him, placing her hand soothingly on the top of his head. Abel gripped her skirts, turning his face into her hip like a child trying to hide his tear stained face in shame. She petted his hair lovingly and shushed him gently until his wracking sobs ended.
“You must have faith, Abel. Alexandra will return when her hurt has ebbed. It may take a fair bit of time, but she will return. We are her family, and she couldn’t deny you a place in your son’s life.” Abel doubted her words, but struggled to calm himself. He knew then he would know no happiness until his family returned to him, Alexandra and his son.
It had been weeks since Alexandra had left, along with Hugue. The AX had searched all of Rome looking for the two of them, knowing in their hearts they would never find them. The AX members had become more subdued since their departure and Abel could no longer look anyone in the eye. He’d taken to spending his days, silently, standing in Lady Catherina’s office just in case she received word from them. She had finally forced him retire to his own chambers, his lack of sleep wreaking havoc on him.
Tres retrieved the stack of letters she received daily, sifting through all the letters from officials and heads of state, keeping one for further examination. He pulled it close to sniff it, removing it to arm’s length to stare at it, his expressionless face giving her no clues.
“Tres, what on Earth are you doing?”
“You have received a letter with no return address or any identification whatsoever other than your name and title.”
“Well, bring it here.”
“It could be dusted with a dangerous poison, or--”
“Tres, just bring the letter here.” Catherina took the envelope, noting the spindly old style script, that spelled out three words: Cardinal Catherina Sforza. Opening the envelope, Catherina removed the letter and began reading.
Cardinal Sforza,
Forgive us our speedy departure. Alex and I are safe and not far from Rome. Alexandra was quite adamant in her decision to leave. Forgive me, Cardinal, but I had to accompany her. I could not let her travel, pregnant and alone. You must know by now, that I love her deeply, and though it doesn’t befit my station as a priest, nor does my hasty departure befit my station under your service, I simply could not leave her alone in this world. She has fallen into a quiet depression, and though she divulges her feelings to me, she remains sullen and keeps her deepest thoughts from me. I wonder if she will ever be able to tell me everything, so shaken was she by Abel’s rejection.
She has begun exhibiting symptoms of her pregnancy, morning sickness being the primary complaint. We have since seen a doctor, gotten the regular attention. I will see to it that she has regular checkups. None of the doctors know that she is a Crusnik, of course. I do not know how long the gestational period will be, but Alexandra is becoming more enamored with the thought of her sons. I can often find her staring out windows with a far away look and a soft smile, all the while stroking her stomach. My Lady, forgive me. I have left your services so dishonorably, but I simply cannot be without Alexandra. I would gladly forfeit my immortal soul simply to ensure her happiness.
Enough blasphemy. I merely wished to send you word. I hope you haven’t worried about us too much. I will send word after the next doctor’s visit. Alexandra doesn’t know that I’ve been writing to you, but I could find no other way to assuage my guilt for leaving they way we did. I will send word soon.
All my affection,
Hugue
Catherina sat with her hand over her mouth, her eyes swimming with unshed tears. She breathed a deep sigh of relief and promptly locked the letter in her desk drawer. She sat back and pondered the guilt Hugue spoke of. She smiled to herself, reassured that her children would eventually return to her.
Hugue watched Alex’s peaceful face as she slept, her head resting against the window of their train cabin. He was thinking about the letter he’d sent to the Cardinal when she stirred. Her face lit up with a smile as she stretched, rubbing her eyes. They were quiet for a few moments, just enjoying each other’s company. Alex’s eyes, predictably, were turned out the window, watching the countryside fly by. Hugue reached to take her hand, kissing it tenderly. She brushed her fingers over his cheek, momentarily distracted from her reverie.
“Chérie, are you feeling well?”
“Yes. I’m just so tired all the time. I feel like I sleep all day, yet I can always sleep some more.”
“How are they?”
“They are draining to me a little, but I can feel them more now.” Alex closed her eyes, her hand taking it’s usual place over her belly. She smiled at the familiar feeling of something growing within her. When she opened her eyes again, Hugue was still watching her.
“Are you still worried, Chérie?” Alex was silent a few moments, her expression becoming very solemn. She pondered his question, never turning to look at him.
“I can’t get him out of my mind, Hugue. The look on his face. The only time I’m not thinking about him is when I’m thinking about the twins. I wish they were here already, that I could just shower love and attention on them and wipe his presence from my mind. On the other hand, the thought of them being here and not knowing what to do terrifies me.” Alex let her head fall back against the headrest with a sigh. “Yes. I will always be worried.”
“Everything will work out in the end, Chérie. I thought I would never know happiness or love again in my lifetime. I didn’t think life could hold happiness for me again, until I met you. I was so caught up in my own misery that I forgot how lovely it is to have someone you love so close to you.” Hugue kissed her hand again and Alex cradled his cheek, smiling at him warmly.
“I wish I could wipe everything clean and have only you. Just me and you.”
“Chérie.” Hugue moved to sit next to her, kissing her tenderly, his fingers sliding up her neck and into her hair. Alex returned all his love and affection, nuzzling into his shoulder when they finally broke apart. “We must trust that things will get better in time.”
“Yeah, I suppose you’re right, Hugue. I just need to have some faith.”
Fin. C'est tout, mes petits.
