Sailor Terra looked around her, and wrapped her arms around her in a desperate attempt to get warm. She was on a featureless plain of ice and snow, except for a rather unusual formation near her. It looked like a wave had started to break on the shore and had quick frozen.
Terra approached the arched ice structure and studied it. It was in the correct direction to shield her from the wind, and the leeward side showed signs of being melted. Her thoughts immediately went to the day that Sailor Sol and Sailor Uranus had been sent away by the Dark Millennium. The ice formation looked a great deal like what Uranus had described of Sol’s creation.
She needed to get out of the cold. Even out of the wind, her fingers were getting numb. She knelt down in the shelter and placed her hands flat on the ground.
The ice was thick, compacted snow. Beneath it, though, was the solidity of soil and stone. She reached down mentally, testing how thick the ice was, and how malleable the soil beneath it. She concentrated and willed the ground under her to part and create a space underground. When it was complete, she created a pathway from the new cave to the surface. She made it break the surface right behind the ice barrier.
She got to her feet and was about to climb into the tunnel that she had created when she heard footsteps on the ice. She looked up to see a figure walking towards her through the driving sleet. Gradually, the figure became identifiable as Sailor Uranus.
“Uranus!” she called out. “Come here! I’ve made shelter!”
Uranus walked over to her. She had her arms wrapped around her body and she was visibly shivering. She looked at Terra, and then at the hole in the ground.
“What good is that going to do?” she asked.
“Underground is at a constant temperature,” Terra said. “On Earth, it’s usually around 65-72 degrees, Fahrenheit. Even on this world, it should be considerably warmer than out here.”
“Then let’s get down there,” Uranus said. She waited while Terra slithered down the tunnel leading to the new chamber, and then followed her.
Inside, it was still cold, but it was considerably warmer than on the surface. Both Senshi spent several moments chafing exposed skin and warming themselves.
“How do you suggest we get out of here?” Terra asked.
“Sol and I used the Sailor Teleport,” Uranus replied. “I don’t know if it will work for us.”
“We can try,” Terra said. “I’m almost as powerful as Sol, and we’re in my element That should give me the power boost we need.”
“It’s worth a try,” Uranus said. “At least now, we’re warmer. We can concentrate on the Teleport, instead of how cold we are.”
The two of them stood back to back, and for Uranus it was evocative of when she and Sol had been stranded in this frozen waste.
The two of them concentrated, building their power, feeling it surge through them, building until it seemed that there was no way for them to hold any more.
When they felt the power reach its peak, they both said a tiny prayer, and then willed the transportation to happen.
“Sailor Teleport!”
~*~*~*~
The first indication of their success was the immediate change in temperature, and a playful breeze that teased their hair onto their cheeks.
Hesitantly, Terra opened her eyes. She felt them fill with tears when she realized that she was looking at the Zen garden in the back yard of the Compound. She released Uranus’ hands and stepped away a little. She looked around, noticing the signs of neglect all around their home.
“We are back,” she said softly.
“Yeah,” Uranus said. “But how long has it been, and where is everybody else? I can’t imagine Aster and the girls letting things get this way.
“They must not be here,” Terra said. “Perhaps we should look inside the house. We might find some clues.”
“Unless he managed to get rid of everyone but us,” Uranus said. She pulled off her tiara and Haruka put her henshin wand into her jacket pocket.
Lucinda pocketed her own henshin wand and led the way across the backyard and into Chiba House.
The two of them found something to eat, noticing that the fresh food was gone and only canned and dry foods were left.
In the living room, they stared at the whiteboard for several moments before they both started chuckling.
“This must be Usagi,” Lucinda said, smiling. “Everyone else would have written a message. Only Usagi would make it a guessing game.”
“There’s no guessing game here,” Haruka said, gesturing under the picture of the doghouse. “Endymion, Sailor Saturn, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mars, Kishi Mercury, Sailor Neptune, Kishi Uranus, Sailor Sol, and Kishi Moon. That’s why the place is deserted. Someone decided that we needed to regroup out of the city.”
“I can understand why,” Lucinda said. “I feel the Earth being warped by Chaos. It must have been agony for Endymion.”
“Okay,” Haruka said. “Put some pants on. We’ll take my bike out of here. It’s the most mobile. I know you’d rather a car, but we might need to go somewhere small or rough.”
“You are correct,” Lucinda said. “On both fronts. I would rather a car, but we may need the mobility. I will find my field gear. I have pants in that.”
~*~*~*~
When they arrived at the house in Akita, there was no sign of any occupants, but they could see several vehicles parked off of the driveway.
They got off of the motorcycle, and Lucinda almost fell down.
“My legs are numb,” she told Haruka. “I have never spent so much time on something that vibrated before.”
“I’m used to it,” Haruka said, putting an arm around her to steady her. “Let’s get inside and see where everybody is.”
“I am looking forward to seeing Mamoru,” Lucinda said. “Somehow, I feel incomplete without him.”
“I know what you mean,” Haruka said as they made their way up the walk. “I don’t know who I’m looking forward to seeing more: Aster, Michiru … or Nathan.”
Just before they reached the door, it opened and everyone that they already knew was there spilled out, anxious to welcome them home.
Lucinda hugged her sister and then Usagi and Thomas. Before she knew it, she was standing in front of Mamoru.
It was as though the Planet Call had never been sated. Every nerve in her body seemed to be reaching out to him, demanding that she join with him. She moved forward, as if in a trance.
To one side, Aster and Michiru looked at one another and nodded. They turned their attention back to Haruka, and stepped aside so that Haruka and Nathan faced one another with no obstacles between them.
As if Nathan was a magnet and Haruka was an iron bar, Haruka moved forward and wrapped her arms around her planet partner, as if to make them one, so that they could not be separated again.
“I don’t remember that kind of behavior after separations before,” Michiru said.
“We’d never been separated for ten thousand years, before,” Aster pointed out. “Also, the separation was traumatic. Maybe this is to reaffirm our bond. The Senshi carry the greater power, but I think that we need the Kishi as much for emotional stability as for balancing the power.”
“We’ll find out for sure when Quentin and Vincent return,” Michiru said sadly. “I do feel like something’s missing.”
“Yes,” Aster said. “I won’t face Chaos again while I feel like this. We need to be complete, or we need to use the Final Strike to stop it.”
“We swore an oath not to, we four,” Michiru reminded her.
“We may have no choice,” Aster said. “If we feel incomplete, then we will not win the battle. If that happens, then we four need to draw straws.”
“You know as well as I do that you’ll fix that draw,” Michiru said. “Aster, we can’t live without you, now. If you go, we all go.”
“If ChibiUsa doesn’t return,” Aster said, turning to follow every one else into the house. “It may be completely academic.”

A week after Uranus and Terra’s return, another car arrived at the Akita house. Aster was up on her feet and out the door before the car’s engine had shut off. All of the occupants of the house looked at one another in surprise for a few moments, before Haruka got up to follow her out.
“In case the rest of you don’t get it,” she said. “Vincent’s back.”
They all followed the path that Aster took to find Makoto staring while Aster wrapped herself around Vincent as if she intended to become one with him permanently.
“What’s with her?” Makoto asked, turning her eyes to Lucinda.
“Every reunited partnership has acted like that,” Michiru said. “Haruka and Nathan were literally inseparable for almost twenty-four hours. Don’t expect to sleep with Vincent tonight.
“You can sleep with Kojiro and I,” Lucinda said, smiling at her lover.
“I thought you’d never say that,” Makoto said, stepping over to wrap her arms around Lucinda. “I missed you so much. All Vincent and I talked about was how much we missed you. I don’t think he expected Aster to react like that.”
“Of course not,” Lucinda said, smiling. “I caught Mamoru quite by surprise.”
The two of them turned to watch Aster cover Vincent’s face with kisses. Vincent looked surprised for a moment, and then he responded to his partner’s attentions. He lifted her off of her feet so that they were of an even height. She pressed her forehead to his, murmuring to him. He tightened his arms around her and carried her into the house, away from everyone else.
“Now I know how she felt,” Haruka said, looking at Lucinda and Makoto. “Shall we?”

Four days after Vincent and Makoto arrived, the phone in the living room rang, startling them all.
Usagi picked up the phone first and brought the receiver to her ear.
“Moshi, moshi,” she said. She listened for a moment, her eyes widening, and the color rising in her cheeks. She sat forward, moving away from Thomas of her own will for the first time since his return.
“Minako?” she cried. “You’re where? The airport? Yes, we’ll come get you right away! Who’s with you? That’s wonderful! Yes, she’s here. We’ll send her along. Yes, I’ll send someone right away! It’s so good to hear from you!”
Usagi hung up and looked at everyone else, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Minako and Sean are at the airport in town!” she squealed. “I told her we’d send someone to pick them up.”
“Nathan and I’ll go,” Haruka said. “We’ll take Hotaru with us. If she reacts the same way as the rest of us, she’ll need the time between the airport and the house.”
“Not on your life,” Aster said. “Hotaru is staying here. Take Michiru with you. ‘Ruka, if she reacts like you and I, you’ll be pulled over for indecent exposure and lewd acts in public.”
“Well said,” Haruka said. “We’ll take Michiru.”
~*~*~*~
When the car returned, Hotaru was the first one out the door. She launched herself at Sean before he had even finished climbing out of the car. She wrapped her arms around him and pressed against him much like Aster had when Vincent had returned.
At the door, Michiru watched with a bit of envy. She was still missing a bit of herself. It did not seem to be affecting Makoto and Rei the same way.
She looked over to where Aster was standing with Vincent’s arm around her waist. Usagi was standing with Thomas, and Lucinda and Mamoru were turning to go back into the house.
Haruka noticed the expression on her long-time lover’s face, and she walked over to her, one hand entwined with Nathan’s.
“Spend the night with us,” Haruka said. “That way, you’ll be with someone who misses Quentin as much as you do.
Michiru watched over Haruka’s shoulder as Usagi greeted Minako with an enthusiastic hug, and then Rei and Makoto did the same, all four of them babbling at the same time about how happy they were to see one another, and how much they had missed one another.
“I wonder where Minako is going to sleep,” Michiru said softly.
“Probably with Rei,” Haruka replied. “I’ve noticed that the Inners aren’t as affected by this as we were. Maybe it has something to do with power levels. In any case, Makoto has Kojiro, so Rei’s been sleeping alone. I’ve noticed that none of us does alone very well.”
“That’s no surprise,” Michiru said. “After being on our own for so long, suddenly we have someone to share the ordeal with. Losing them, even temporarily, feels like losing a limb.”

Five days later, Robert’s car pulled into the driveway. Aster told Makoto go meet him while the rest of them waited at the doorway.
The passenger door opened, and a slender adolescent with pink hair climbed out, looking around.
Usagi shrieked and completely left Thomas’ side for the first time. She ran forward and wrapped her arms around her future daughter, crying in happiness and relief. Mamoru followed her at a somewhat more sedate pace. Lucinda and Thomas smiled at one another and put their arms around each other as they watched the family reunite.
Aster breathed a sigh of relief and leaned back against Vincent. Once again, the future was secure.
“We still win,” she said softly.
“Dang right we do,” he said as he wrapped his arms around her.
“Look at that,” Haruka said, stepping up next to them.
Aster turned to look where she was looking.
Makoto and Robert had embraced, but she had stepped back to let Rei in, and she showed none of the immediate dependency that had characterized the five of them who were reunited with their partners, so far.
“So much for that theory,” Haruka said. She looked at Nathan as he put his arm around her shoulders.
“Don’ worry ‘bout it, luv,” he said, smiling at her. “She don’ carry as much powah as the firs’ five o’ ya. I think the res’ o’ the girls’ll have an easiah toime o’ it, y’know?”
“You could be right,” Aster acknowledged. “Maybe we were a little more unstable because of the amount of power. Maybe the less they carry, the less the separation bothered them.”

Four days after ChibiUsa and Robert showed up, a soft voice came over their communication devices.
“Hayasa, are you there?” Sailor Mercury’s voice made them all look up. “This is Mercury. Is anyone there?”
“This is Sailor Moon,” Usagi said. “Where are you Mercury? Are you alone?”
“No,” she replied. “I’m not alone. Kishi Mars is with me. We just got to Tokyo from Australia. Where is everyone?”
“Look in the main room of Chiba House,” Usagi replied. “We’re at the Safe House. I think there are maps in all of the vehicles.”
“We are on our way,” the voice of Kishi Mars came up. “Has anyone heard from my partner or Sailor Venus?”
“Yes,” Usagi said. “When you see the board, please add Sailor Venus and Kishi Saturn. They didn’t come by way of Tokyo.”
“Consider it done,” Mars said. “Tell them that I am missing everyone.”
“We miss you too, Mars,” Usagi said. “I think even Sol missed you.”
“That would be the day,” he said forlornly. “She barely looks at me.”
***** *****
Eleven days passed without another word from the two still missing. Eleven days for everyone to think about what had happened. Eleven days for Aster, Minako, and Haruka to huddle around maps of Tokyo and plot new strategies.
Finally, a slight click got their attention, and then a voice made them all sit up and take notice.
“Oi,” Kishi Neptune’s voice sounded. “Anyone there, or do I run away with Kishi Venus?”
“Don’t you dare, Umi'akurei,” Nathan replied, switching on his own communicator. “Where’ve you been?”
“We came to on top the Great Pyramid,” Kishi Venus told them. “We just touched ground in Tokyo, today.”
“Go back in the terminal,” Aster said, joining the conversation. “Take a local carrier up to Akita. We’ll meet you at the airport.”
“What about the train?” Venus asked.
“You’d have to take bus service out of the city,” Aster said. “Why?”
“They’re shutting down the airport until the emergency’s over,” Venus told her. “We were one of the last planes allowed to land. No outgoing flights until further notice.”
“Okay,” she said. “Get what transportation you can. Rent a car, if possible. We’re up north.”
“Got it,” Neptune said. “We can’t wait to see all of you again.”
~*~*~*~
A few days later, they were all rested and mostly recovered. Aster got everyone assembled in the main room to show them what conclusions she and the other two had come to.
“We still have to use the Sailor Box,” Aster told them. “We just did it wrong. We have to balance out male and female, around the box. We put Planet Partners opposite one another, to maintain the balance of things.
“I’m scared,” Usagi said. With Lucinda and Thomas’ help, she was not only sleeping with Mamoru, the two of them were having sex again. She still had moments of panic, and she still cringed a bit when Mamoru started intimate contact, but she was much better than the cringing wretch that he and Hotaru had rescued, a month and a half before.
“I can’t guarantee that you will never be afraid again,” Lucinda said. “I can guarantee that I can help you find the courage to go on, anyway. Do you know what courage is, Usa-chan?”
“It’s not being afraid,” Usagi murmured.
“No,” Lucinda said. “It’s doing what you have to, or what you want to, in spite of being scared out of your mind.”
“It is?” Usagi asked, looking up at her Primary with wondering eyes.
“Yes,” Lucinda said. “Most of the time, a hero is someone who’s too tired, too hungry, too cold, or too scared to care anymore.”
“I am tired of being afraid,” Usagi said. “Will I ever not be scared?”
Lucinda and Aster looked at one another, before Aster decided to be brutally honest with her.
“Probably not,” she said. “I’ve never known what it was like to not be afraid, except when the Shitennou were visiting us. You just … learn to deal with it.”
