Cho spent the night on his futon in a private room located at the far end of Horie’s compound. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to gain much rest at all. It wasn’t due to the fact that a revengeful ninja was contemplating his death and could appear at any moment in an attempt to end Cho’s life. Rather, his mind was occupied with the woman he had become obsessed with— Mitsu. More than anything, Cho wanted to help Mitsu escape from Horie and the life that brought her so much unhappiness. She deserves much better than this, much better... Cho thought. He was determined to be her hero–somehow— Someway.
On the other side of the building Horie and Mitsu lay together under their covers that adorned the imported, Spanish style bed. It didn’t matter to Horie what they slept on, just as long as he had Mitsu next to him.
Mitsu adored the western clutter, and she made a habit of collecting imports to surround herself with the culture of the west. Dreams and daydreams were her retreats. Such fantasies carried her away to the far western high society, where she imagined herself in fancy dresses and tolerated the painfully handsome men who squabbled amongst themselves to escort her to fancy social affairs.
“I will be at the storefront most of the day with Serizawa-san," Horie spoke softly, but it was still interrupted Mitsu's thoughts. "I want you to stay around here, and most importantly, do not leave the compound, and do not let anyone in,” Horie insisted.
“Hai,” Mitsu agreed. She watched Horie slip on his attire and position the straps on his body that secured his weapons. “It will not take us too long to locate Cho’s adversary. In the mean time, we need to make sure you are safe, as well as Mochi Hana.”
Mitsu sighed, “Why must it always be this way, Hisomu-san? There will always be someone who wants to end our lives, or take over the organization. I’m sure this life was not meant to be the way it is now.”
“Unfortunately, we don’t have a choice,” Horie walked over to the bed, sat on the edge, and took his worried lady’s hand in his. “If Japan was more stable, perhaps our life would be different than the way it is now. There are no real opportunities, other than what we are currently doing to make a good living.” Horie kissed Mitsu on the forehead and smiled, “As long as we’re together, we will be fine. Hold onto that and do not allow yourself to soften and fall apart. I need you to be strong!”
Mitsu smiled, knowing that Horie meant well, but if he had to make a choice between she and the underworld, she knew that being the head of the syndicate meant everything to Horie. All she ever dreamed of was being the wife of a man who loved her above all else. Mitsu’s choice to stay with Horie was decided when she set out into the world to help her mother and sister. Surely she couldn’t be so selfish as to abandon them by choosing a life of love and happiness for herself and denying her family the steady support Horie supplied for them.
“Yes, I will be strong, and I will keep things secured here while you are away.” Mitsu nodded, “Have the guards be watchful on the grounds and I know we will be just fine.” She placed her arms around Horie’s neck and tenderly kissed his face. There was no other woman who could understand the complexities of Horie Hisomu, but Mitsu knew how to reach him.
“That’s my woman,” Horie chuckled. “You will always be my woman.” With that said, Horie stood and walked to the bedroom door, turned around to smile at Mitsu and bowed.
One of Horie’s servants hurried to his side and helped the syndicate’s leader with his coat. Horie stood erect with arms outstretched. “Now go and let Serizawa and Cho know that I am ready to leave and will meet them at the carriage.
“Hai my Lord,” the servant ran off to do as Horie requested.

“Oh shit…Oh damn…Shit!!! No, damn it! I did not do what I think I did.” Sano held his head as he complained out loud in the empty room. “Itai, my head feels like it’s gonna blow up at any minute. How much did I drink last night, anyway?”
“I see you’re still alive,” Katsu said as he came through the door from the outside. “I thought I’d let you sleep it off. I went out to get something to restore your strength.” Katsu shut the door behind him and made his way to Sano’s futon. “Here man, I know this will make you feel better. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen you as screwed up as this.”
Sano looked pale and the distinct aura of embarrassment shown unmistakably on his face. “Before I do anything stupid again…” He hung his head humbly, “…I’m sorry for being such an ass last night.”
Katsu laughed heartedly, “Hey man, you don’t have to apologize, it was nothing!”
“Nothing?” Sano didn’t know whether he should be glad Katsu was okay with it, or be hurt that Katsu was calling the kiss they shared, nothing.
“Wait a minute…are you telling me that what happened here between us last night, was… nothing? I mean, wasn’t it at least a little… something?
Katsu laughed again, this time a little nervously not wanting to hurt Sano’s feelings. “You know I didn’t mean it in a negative way, you big idiot!” Katsu shook his head and removed a bento for Sano from a sack and offered it to his hung over friend.
“Well, I still think I need to apologize to you, for you know… acting like an ass and all.”
“Hey, look at it this way… At least I now know that you make those mushy, silly sounds when you kiss,” Katsu said as he broke out in a fit of laughter.”
“Fuck you! I know I was an ass, but you don’t have to rub salt on the crack!” Sano frowned, but couldn’t contain his own laughter for another second. “You’re not shitting me, huh? Did I really moan?”
“Uh huh… you sure did! It sounded like a cat’s purr. It was actually kind of sexy. Katsu paused and quickly tried to cover what he just let stumble out… “Uhhh, what I meant to say… uhhh, if I was a girl it probably would have turned me on.”
Sano looked up from the food Katsu gave him and with his mouth stuffed, he mumbled, “Yeah? You think so? You’re not just saying that to make me feel better, huh?”
“I’m dead serious,” Katsu replied with a big smile on his face. “I’m sure that is one of the reasons why a guy like Saitou, who could easily have any woman in Tokyo, chose you for a bed mate.”
“It isn’t just sex, you know,” Sano quickly stated defensively.
“I wasn’t implying that it was… just sex,” Katsu quickly added not wanting to offend his friend. “I just used the term because that’s usually how single guys like myself think. You know, bed first, relationship later.”
“Maybe that’s why you’re still single.”
“Yeah, maybe you’re right.
Katsu put down his bento box and shrugged his shoulders. “So, what’s it like to love a guy?
“I guess it’s like loving a woman.”
“Yeah, I figured that much, but… Does it feel the same? I mean, how do you…” Katsu searched for the words.”
“Make love?” Sano filled in the gap.
“Yeah,” Katsu chuckled nervously. “I guess I’ve never thought about anything close to that before, so I’m completely in the dark.”
“Well, I guess it’s like being with a woman, but… It’s different.” Sano set his empty bento box down. “Hell, you could have found out for yourself last night!”
“Hell no! I’m not that curious about it. Especially now that I know you and Saitou Hajime has something going! I’m not about to cross over onto his territory. Hell no!”
“Hmmm, are you saying that if it weren’t for Saitou, you’d consider it?”
Katsu smiled slightly, giving it a quick thought, “I don’t know, Sano. It’s like I said, I never really thought about it. When I do think about it, I feel weird.”
“Yeah, that’s how it was for me. The first time Saitou kissed me in his garden, hell, I had no idea what was going on. It felt strange, to stay the least. But, that was secondary. I guess I was in love with the guy even before that."
The two sat awhile in silence lost in their own thoughts. Sano was glad that the truth about his relationship with Saitou was on the table with Katsu. And Katsu was also glad that this situation allowed Sano to finally tell him about Saitou. The incident between the two made their friendship tighter and they were better for it.
“Hey Katsu, thanks for taking care of me—again. And hell, thanks for your understanding. I would have told you sooner, but I was sure you wouldn’t let me hear the end of it. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to handle you calling me a homo.”
“I’m glad it’s out in the open, Sano. Now I think I understand you a whole lot better. I wondered why you were so depressed when you got back from Kyoto. I’ve seen you go through losing friends before, but when you thought that Saitou was killed, you handled it completely different. I should have guessed something was cooking over the fire.”
“I need to get my ass back at the dojo before they realize I haven’t changed the bath-bin water for two days. That little missy can be murder on hangovers! Since I have a whopper today, I want to avoid that kind of confrontation with her,” Sano said with fatigue clearly knitted in his voice.
“Sure thing," Katsu agreed as he stood to his feet and offered a hand to Sano.
Sano took hold of Katsu’s hand and got a hoist up. “I owe you one Katsu. I think I owe you big time!”
“Never let a debt go unpaid for too long,” Katsu chuckled with a shimmer in his eye.
“Oh? It looks like you already decided on how to collect.”
“As a matter of fact…” Katsu nodded with an ear-to-ear grin, “…you can pay the dept off right now.”
“Hmmm, I can?” Sano raised an eyebrow. “Tell me.”
“Since the damage is already done, and my ass is already on the line, do me another kiss and we can call it even,” Katsu’s mischievous expression let on that he wasn’t joking.
“You’re fucken serious, aren’t you?”
“Yeah, I want to check it out one more time, to see if there’s something with this homo thing that I may have missed last night. After all, I was in total shock when you first did it.”
Sano laughed like a little boy. Giggling now, he said, “Ha! This has got to be the easiest dept I’ve ever had to pay off!” Sano looked at the door, “Come on and walk with me to the door." He picked up his aku gi top and threw it over his shoulders with a big grin on his face. His heart picked up rhythm the closer he got to the door. He felt much like a little kid who was about to do something terribly naughty. Just like the good old days when he and Katsu partook in prankish deeds.
Katsu felt it too. He was always aware of Sano’s good looks and was envious at the way the girls used to stare at his charismatic friend, while they just about ignored him. Could it be that Katsu was attracted to Sano but never admitted it to himself? He was surprised to feel the sensations of arousal.
With sweet anticipation, Sano turned to face Katsu. “Are you ready for this?”
“Hell yes! Do it to me!”
Without jesting, Sano set his two hands upon Katsu’s shoulders and looked directly at Katsu’s lips. “Hey, you know something?” Sano paused, looking rather dreamy-eyed.
Katsu replied in a half whispered groan, “Hmmm?” He wasn’t expecting the moment to feel as intense as it started to feel. His heart was skipping beats, his breathing was altogether short from stopping totally, and the surges of electrical impulses were surging through his groin and shot through his entire body. He involuntarily shook as Sano touched his shoulders and drew him close.
“This is nice,” Sano spoke softly and pulled Katsu against his body. “Oooh, “ he sipped air between his teeth, held his breath for a short moment and then he sighed into Katsu’s ear whispering, “I can feel you getting hard, buddy. Now let me sample a bit of what I don’t know about you…”
Sano supported Katsu’s head in his hand and pressed his lips onto his lustful friends mouth, separating them with his tongue. Sano relished the sweetness of Katsu’s soft lips, softer than he ever remembered Saitou being, and much more surrendering, as well. In fact, Sano felt Katsu surrender completely to him, which had Sano desiring more of Katsu. Sano wanted, but restrained from laying Katsu on the floor and master his childhood friend.
Katsu was in disbelief over the fact that Sano expertly played his tongue as no lover ever had. No other kiss could he compare to Sano’s skillful technique, which, for the moment, caused Katsu to lose all bearing and relevant thought. All he was able to do was surrender.
Temptation screamed at Sano as he felt how sweetly Katsu’s tongue met his. For all the years of chasing dreams together, growing together and protecting one another, everything seemed to unitize the moment they held each other.
Sano couldn’t hold out much longer— He had to get a hold of himself before he completely lost all self-control. Sano pulled his lips from Katsu, savoring the kiss by carefully sucking his lips into his mouth and running his tongue over them to lap up any residue left from their mouths embrace.
The two buddies stood there, both awed with what took place between them. Neither of them had the words to express how they felt, but it was obvious that they communicated something very powerful between them.
“Did that just happen?” Katsu touched his fingers to his lips, still dazed and numb from the kiss’ profoundness.
“Yeah, I know what you mean Katsu. It was like a punch to the gut, except, instead of pain, it was total pleasure!”
“Well, I’m going to have to think about this awhile, but I’m sure we need to leave this alone before it becomes habit forming.”
Sano broke out in laughter and slapped the side of his leg, “You see! I told you!” He pointed his index at Katsu; “You just have to try some things in life before writing them off, huh?
“I’d have to say you’re right about this one, Sano! It was awesome! I hate to admit it but…you were awesome. I can understand why a man like Saitou Hajime likes having you around. If he gets this on a regular basis, he’s one heck of a lucky guy!”
“Yeah? You think so?” Sano slapped Katsu’s shoulder in a fond gesture. “I better get going before I give into temptation here.” He opened the door and stepped out of the apartment. “Thanks for everything! Sano winked.”

“Cho, it’s time we get another horseman to replace you,“ Horie verbalized his plan as he exited the cab with Serizawa.
“I expected as much, being that you saw my talent with the sword. I knew that my carriage driving days would soon me over.” Cho shut the carriage door behind the two men.
“Ahhh, you did?” Horie amusingly laughed at Cho’s comment. “It seems like you never cease to entertain me, Cho. Such confidence, for a young man!”
“I’ve never let myself down,” Cho shrugged, “…so heck yes, you could say that I’m confident.!”
“Let us keep it that way,” Serizawa chuckled tossing a wink in Cho’s direction.
Then out from the clear blue, the unexpected. Slicing through the air a kunai struck the side of the carriage. All the men scattered at once, taking off in different directions.
A boisterous snigger was heard over the sound of the merchant clatter and drew the attention of the three men. There was activity, movement, if you will, on the storefront’s rooftop, which attracted everyone’s attention.
“Up there!” Cho shouted as he pointed to the direction of the laughter. “The shinobi!”
Serizawa immediately started for the side of the building to make his way to the back. Horie flushed the front of the building and quickly ran alongside its face to get to the entry, while Cho kept covered by the carriage.
“I am waiting for the right moment!” The voice crackled from the rooftop.
Cho moved out from behind the carriage and faced the shinobi. He felt anger’s dam fracture and seep through him. “What are you waiting for asshole? I’m right here! Come and get me, let’s do this thang right from the get-go!”
“That would be too easy. I want to relish your fear. I know that you’ll not rest from here on.”
It was Cho’s turn to laugh, “Yup, I’m trembling… you sick piece of shit. I’m trembling, but not out of fear, but out of thirst for blood! Your blood!”
Suddenly, the shinobi was gone. Cho stood there for a moment, contemplating on what to do next when he heard Horie call out to him from the storefront.
“The building is clear, come on Cho, the shinobi was just blowing off steam with his threats.”
“Yup, I saw that,” Cho acknowledged and started for the storefront.
When Cho entered the shop he joined Horie and Serizawa already in conversation over the next step they were planning to take to cut down Sugimura’s organization. The air was tense and Cho sensed that it was time to move on the shinobi who had a mark on him. The task became ‘personal’ for Cho, which made him anxious and excited to get started.
“I’m going to work on locating that shinobi son of a bitch. I’m not doing any good standing around here. I know just the thing I need to get that shit-bag,” Cho huffed.
Horie snickered, “Hmn, you are right to be moving on the shinobi. Serizawa and I will brainstorm our next move against Sugimura. “This is getting very interesting and I’m sure it is just the beginning. With our shipments coming in as quickly as they are, the existing markets here in Tokyo are becoming disquieted. As I foresaw, many will try to push us out of the way.” Horie’s snicker matured into a hearty laugh. “How foolish of them to not realize our power!”
“Hai,” Cho bowed, “I’m on my way!”
Cho left the storefront in a hurry to solicit Aoshi’s assistance in locating the shinobi. He was glad to have a reason to be occupied instead of dwelling over the fact that Mitsu was Horie’s property as long as Horie was alive. It gave Cho more of an urgent need to bring the syndicate to a halt.

Saitou gathered his paperwork together for the final review. He kept the reports hidden beneath the tatami in case anyone had reason to investigate Fujita Goro. Papers in order, Saitou deposited them into their usual hiding place and secured the tatami block and headed for the kitchen to finish up his domestic tasks.
It was different for Saitou without his special partner, Sano. He was preoccupied with thoughts, not admitting to himself that he was concerned about the young man’s welfare. Guilt stole its way into the wolf’s thoughts as well. He felt responsible for Sano’s outburst; after all, it was all too familiar as he recalled the many discussions he had with his ex-wife, Tokio. She would bring the past up to Saitou on countless occasions, but he was unable to bring himself to discuss any of it with her. Not necessarily because he flat out refused to discuss it, but he simply could not escape the choking pain that suffocated him whenever he tried to remember, or discuss his past with anyone.
“Damn it!” Saitou shouted with regret. Why must I drive the very ones who love me, away? He thought. He shut his eyes in an attempt to block the flood of images about his past that he always tried to avoid. Why are all of those things coming back to me? I don’t want to think about them… I don’t want to be reminded!
The agonized wolf, straddled with past memories, turned to the storage bin and picked up a bottle of sake. Not bothering to pour it into a cup, he drank the spiked liquid directly from the bottle. He realized that Sano’s absence had caused him to backslide into his past. His lively crutch was not at his side. Sano was his diversion, his life support during such times.
NO! Damn it… NO! He shut his eyes again to fight off the visions. He brought the bottle to his lips and drank, guzzling the milky fermented rice concoction down quickly, as if to drown the sorrows that were unfolding within his mind. Desperately, Saitou tried to dam the flow of memories that seemed to be burning a hole through his very heart. He grit his teeth and… “Aaaaahggg!” he squalled and threw the sake bottle across the room, shattering the empty vessel against the side of an old cabinet he prided himself for having in his possession. At that very moment, Saitou definitely fit the description of wolf, baring his teeth with lips drawn tightly against his face. Was it a battle for sanity? Or, was Saitou feeling the regret for the many things that had gone wrong in his life?
He took a breath deep into his lungs and relaxed as he exhaled. He opened the storage bin again and picked up another bottle of sake. This time he turned and walked away from the bin, straight through the kitchen then out the front door into his garden. He set the bottle down on the rock and sat next to it realizing he was in dire need of a smoke.
Must all my relationships take this route? Saitou’s melancholy thoughts continued to drizzle down on him. Is it impossible for me to communicate my life to another, or is there hope that someday I will be able to let go of… The pain of remembering, of seeing his lost love in his mind was too much. His heart, stifled, as memories crashed upon him like tender grass under foot of a stampeding heard. At that moment, Saitou wept alone in his garden.

Shit, this is killing me! Sano thought as he walked along the side of the winding roadway considering whether or not he would stop at Saitou’s place before going to the dojo. Hell, if I see Saitou right now, he would, for-sure, know that something’s up with me. How the hell am I suppose to hide something from that wolf? He can be even sharper than Kenshin when it comes to looking right through me, and no doubt he would kill me if he finds out what Katsu and I did. How can I be so stupid?
Sano broke out in a nervous sweat when he thought about what could happen if Saitou got wind of how Sano decided to drown his anger the night before. Did Sano actually regret the kiss between he and Katsu? Was it just the sake that caused Sano to behave the way he had? If Sano did blame it on the sake, then, what about the kiss he and Katsu shared when Sano slept the intoxicant off?
“Hell, I can’t see Saitou now,” Sano mumbled and decided to keep walking as he passed Saitou’s garden gate. “I have to get a hold of myself first.” All the thoughts in passing had Sano swear, that nothing like that would ever happen again! Not as long as he and Saitou were together.
Sano put distance between himself and Saitou’s property and headed toward the dojo. There was plenty at the dojo to keep Sano busy, as well as keep his mind occupied. If only I hadn’t gotten so angry, he thought. But the question that was bothering him was in regard to what he needed from Saitou. He wanted to share his life with the wolf, and Sano believed that it meant being involved in every aspect of Saitou’s life. How can that be possible if Saitou kept locks on all the doors?
“Damn wolf,” Sano grumbled.
